HENRY LADWIG (d. 1932) HENRY LADWIG, 24, DIES TODAY AT MILWAUKEE Marquette University Student Was To Have Resumed His Duties At School Today Slipping on the floor and crashing through a window to plunge three stories to a concrete pavement below, Henry Ladwig, Jr., 24 year old Manitowoc student at Marquette university sustained a fractured skull shortly after midnight last night and died at 4:40 o'clock this morning, according to messages received here today from the Associated Press. The plunge to the concrete pavement was witnessed by two other Marquette university students in whose company Ladwig had been immediately before he went to his death before he could be saved from the fall. The students told authorities at Milwaukee that they had met young Ladwig during the day and that he had come into their room during the evening to visit. They visited at some length and Ladwig then went to his own room immediately adjoining. He was apparently restless and was moving about in his own room so they went to visit with hime until he was apparently ready to retire. Shortly after midnight the students said, young Ladwig entered their room and was walking past a window when his foot slipped from under him and he plunged through the window to receive injuries which caused his death three hours later. Left Here Yesterday Ladwig, a junior at the university, had returned to Milwaukee yesterday in company with Alfred Green, a brother-in-law, and was to register for the coming semester to begin today. He was in excellent spirits and elated at being able to continue studies which had been interrupted by illness at intervals since his graduation from the Lincoln high school here with the class of 1925. First intimation that relatives in this city had of the tragedy was received by Assistant Police Chief Edward Ladwig who was called at police headquarters by Milwaukee police who conducted an investigation. The first call came in early this morning and at 5 o'clock this morning another message was received bringing information of the boy's death. The lad's father, Henry Ladwig, Sr., and his brother-in-law, Alfred Green, left this morning for Milwaukee to return the body to this city. Life-Long Resident Henry Ladwig, Jr., was a life-long resident of this city and was born here on June 18, 1907. He received his education in the grade and high schools here and later entered Marquette university in the college of Medicine. Ill health forced him to give up his studies for some time but he was sufficiently recov- ered to again resume classes in the science department. Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ladwig, 940 N. Eighth street, immediate surviving relatives are three brothers, Carl, William and Herman, all of Manitowoc, and five sisters, Misses Lillian and Mildred and Mrs. Alfred Green, Manitowoc, and Mrs. Lyle Porter and Miss Helen Ladwig, Milwaukee. Reports from Milwaukee this afternoon said that Coroner Henry Grundeman was uncertain whether the death was due to accident, intimating that there had been som drinking by four students in their rooms during the evening which might have affected Ladwig's mind. Two of the boys said that Ladwig had raised the window and jumped from it. Manitowoc Herald News, February 11, 1932 p.1 ******** FATAL PLUNGE LAID TO LIQUOR (Body of M.U. Student Taken To Home in Manitowoc) The body of Henry Ladwig, 24, Marquette student who plunged to his death from a third story apartment window early Thursday, was taken to his home in Manitowoc late Thursday. His father, Henry C. Ladwig, superintendent of the Lakeside Canning company of Manitowoc, claimed the body and explained his son had returned to Milwaukee Wednesday to re-enter Marquette as a premedic student after an absence because of illness. The youth, a nephew of Edward Ladwig, assistant chief of police in Manitowoc, leaped from the window of an apartment at 741 N. Fourteenth street while deranged from liquor, Coroner Henry Grundman reported. Police learned that after renting a room in the apartment building, Ladwig joined two other Marquette students and helped consume two pints of liquor. The students, Leslie Phillips of Delavan, Wisc., and Walter Plewe, 21, told police all three had been drinking and Ladwig became boisterous and was taken to the room of Al Cary, another student. With no apparent reason, Ladwig suddenly rushed to the window and leaped out, Phillips told police. The youth died of a fractured skull in the County Emergency hospital three hours after the leap. HERMAN LADWIG (d. 1900) From Der Nord Westen, 12 July 1900: Death in a Sheboygan hospital on Fri. of Hermann Ladwig of typhus. The deceased was a son of Henry Ladwig who resides in the vicinity of Two Rivers. The body was brought here and buried Sun. in the city cemetery. ******* [cause: intestinal infection] ******* MAY TAKE HIM UP Grave of Herman Ladwig May Be Opened To Determine Cause of Death There seems to be considerable diversity of opinion among physicians here and at Sheboygan, as to the cause which led to the death of Herman Ladwig, the Manitowoc boy who was treated at the Sheboygan hospital and died last week. It may result in the body being exhumed to settle the dispute and indicate the assertions of the attending physicians. A special to the Evening Wisconsin from Sheboygan, under date of July 11 says: “A controversy has arisen as to the cause of the death of Herman Ladwig, a Manitowoc young man who died in Sheboygan last week. At Manitowoc the impression prevails that the young man died of lockjaw in terrible agony. This impression is not confirmed in Sheboygan though there are conflicting statements as to the cause of the young man’s death which is likely to result in the body being exhumed. The physician who had the case in charge says that the young man which infected the digestive organs. Another doctor, one of the leading physicians of Sheboygan who saw the case fourteen hours before death came says the young man died of mastoiditis and brain involvement, the result of an injury at Manitowoc five months ago. In this he says he is upheld by a leading physician of Manitowoc and another Sheboygan doctor while the doctor who claims that Ladwig died of bowel infection says he is upheld by two physicians of Sheboygan who saw the case. The young man had several teeth removed and others treated about three weeks before he died, but none of the Sheboygan physicians attribute anything from this as causing his death. Ladwig was injured on the head about five months ago while working in the woods near Manitowoc. A log fell striking a saw he was carrying and both struck him heavily on the head. He was treated at Manitowoc at first, and Dr. Fraser of that city said he could not be cured without an operation for abscess of the brain. He came to Sheboygan to be treated by Dr. Grimer about six weeks ago, he being told by the Sheboygan physician who formerly lived in the vicinity of Manitowoc that an operation was not necessary.” Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, July 12, 1900, Page 2

RICHARD LADWIG R. LADWIG IS A VICTIM UNUSUAL ACCIDENT; DIES Worker on City Paving Contract Killed on N. 11th Street Richard Ladwig, 38, residing at 808 So. Eighteenth street, was almost instantly killed this morning while employed on the paving work on city streets at Eleventh street and New York avenue. Mr. Ladwig was crushed under the hopper of a big concrete mixer when the cables holding the hopper gave way while the machine was being moved. The body was removed to the undertaking rooms of Urbanek & Wattawa Co. and will later be taken to the home. ACCIDENT IS UNUSUAL The accident is one of the most unusual say paving contractors. Mr. Ladwig was employed by the Manitowoc Construction Co., which has the contract for paving. The concrete mixer was not in use at the time, the hopper being raised on the cables while the machine was being moved a short distance on the work. Ladwig, it is thought, was attempting to block a wheel when in some manner the catch which held the cables of the hopper, gave way and the several ton weight fell upon him, crushing his life out. Fellow workmen rushed to the assistance of the unfortunate man and raised the hopper but found that Ladwig was dead. The hopper was attached to the side of the machine opposite that from which Ladwig had been working and why the man had gotten around the machine at the other side does not appear. Coroner Kemper was summoned but it is not probable that an inquest will be held as the case was purely one of accident. There is no break in the cable, the mishap being due to the slipping or release of the clutch which held the cable of the hopper. FIRST ACCIDENT CITY WORK The death of Mr. Ladwig is the first fatal accident on city work here in years. Mr. Ladwig was formerly employed by H.C. Schuette, head of the Construction Co. when the latter was in the livery business and had worked for the company last year on paving. He had been employed at the Shipyards for some time and when paving operations reopened this spring returned to the Construction Co. Mr. Ladwig is survived by a widow and three children, two boys and a girl, the youngest eight years old. His aged father, one sister and a brother also survive. Mr. Ladwig was employed with the Manitowoc Malting company, also, and was former secretary of the local Malters union. Funeral arrangements have not been made. The accident is a sad one and the sympathy of the community will go out to the stricken family.
