CHARLOTTE LOHMANN Death Thurs. morning last week following a long illness of Mrs. Charlotte Lohmann, a longtime resident of our city. Mrs. Lohmann was born in Hanover on 09 Sep. 1829. In Germany she married Heinrich Hemschemeyer and came with her husband to America in 1850. The family settled in Town Newton in this county and underwent all the joys and pains of pioneer life. Her husband died in 1875. Two years later she married Dietrich Lohmann with whom she moved to the City of Manitowoc. Her second husband was overtaken by death in 1888. As the years passed age made her weaker and weaker until the oil in the lamp flickered out on Thurs. morning at 7:30. Mrs. Lohmann is survived by a daughter from her first marriage, Mrs. R.C. Berndt, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held Sat. afternoon, amid numerous mourners, by Pastor Zenk from the Reformed Church at a graveside ceremony. Mrs. Lohmann had always hoped that the new church bells in that congregation would be installed in the tower by the time of her death, and her wish was fulfilled in that hers was the first funeral for the new bells. Classon claims that the family moved here in 1899 from Wauwatosa to care for Mrs. Lohman on a promise made by her that his, Classon's wife, a granddaughter, would be given the homestead of the aged woman. The court in its decision declares that the case shows that Mrs. Classon received the deeds to the homestead during Mrs. Lohman's life and also $1500 and declares this is sufficient, although the Classons cared for Mrs. Lohman from 1899 to 1904. MARTIN F. LOHSE Youth Killed, Pinned Under Car In Crash Martin F. Lohse, 19, of 1611 Hamilton street, a ship yard worker, was almost instantly killed shortly before two o'clock this afternoon on the Lake Shore road a mile north of Nordheim in the town of Newton when the car he was driving went out of ocntrol in loose gravel and overturned in the ditch. Lohse, alone at the time, was driving south on the highway. He was caught beneath the steering wheel and according to Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, sustained a broken neck and severe chest injuries. No Witnesses No one witnessed the fatal crash. Nick Dondlinger, a farmer and his son John, who live on a farm 500 feet north of where Lohse carshed, recalled hearing the car's horn sound as it passed the farm driveway. A moment later they heard a crash down the road and hurrying down the hill, found the car with all wheels in the air and Lohse pinioned under the steering wheel. (snip) Marks on the side of the highway indicated that Lohse tried desperately to swing the car back on the highway after the front wheel went down in the deep ditch on the east side of the highway. Lohse was driving a grey car, 1937 model coach Martin Lohse was a son of Otto Lohse, also employed at the Manitowoc Ship Building Company. The family had passage tickets sent by a brother of Mr. Lorenz living on Seventh and York Streets in this city. They were held up at the Russian border by the Soviet government officials because of the exorbitant charges for passports. Five were required one for each adult member of the party. The price per passports went up in leaps from twenty million rubles to one hundred and twenty million rubles. They couldn't pay it. A daughter became discouraged and went back to the native village. The mother, aged 78, died of typhus. Then the wife succumbed, then an orphaned son of a brother, all virtually starvation victims, an undernourishment prevented recovery. The survivors hung on desperately and after a wait of exactly a year, they were permitted to move into Germany. They found the Russia quota to the United State exhausted and had another long delay. They finally sailed and their steamer, The Majestic, discharged its human cargo at Boston last week because of the congestion at Ellis Island. Lorenz married a widow with two children after his wife's death and these three were include in the party. There was a happy reunion at the Lorenz home and the immigrants looked up their land of plenty as a Heaven on Earth. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Aug. 16, 1923

HENRY LORENZ (d. 1875) Death of a 16 year old son of Mr. Lorenz, yesterday morning, by drowning in Lake Michigan. Der Nord Westen, 26 Aug. 1875 ******* Henry Lorenz, a lad aged 16 years, was accidentally drowned Wednesday morning. He was fishing out drift wood, on the harbor pier, on the south side, when he lost his balance and fell, striking his head on a vessel lying near. The body of the unfortunate boy was recovered half an hour afterwards. His parents are residents of this city. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, August 26, 1875 P. 3 ******* Henry Lorenz, aged 16 years, residing near the foot of Quay street was drowned yesterday. He, together with several younger companions was spearing fish from the wreck of the schooner, Dispatch, just south of the harbor piers and in throwing the spear at some object in the water, he lost his balance and fell in, the water at that particular point being 10 or 12 feet in depth. It appears that the unfortunate fellow was either stunned by coming in contact with some objct in the water or that he clung to something on the bottom for he did not rise to the surface until fished out an hour later. The alarm was given by his companions but as above stated, it was some time before the body was recovered, when life was extinct. IGNAZ LORENZ A SAD SUICIDE. AN OLD MAN BLOWS THE TOP OF HIS HEAD OFF. Our community was thrown into a wild state of excitement yesterday afternoon, over the annoucement of a suicide, which had been committed on the South Side. A reporter of the Times was on hand and noted all the important particulars. The suicide was an old man, nearly seventy years old, named Lorenz, commonly called Baker Lorenz, his trade being that of a baker. Many of our citizens may have seen the bent form of a little gray-haired man wheeling a cart with bread around town. He was a quiet easy-going gentleman, who followed the "even tenor of his way." Yesterday afternoon, about four o'clock, he was at home with his wife. While the old lady went out into the yard to get some wood, her husband went into the sitting room, remarking that he wanted to smoke. All at once his wife heard the report of a shot, and rushing in, she found her husband sitting in a chair-dead. It seems that on entering the room, he took his old large bore shot gun, which was loaded, and seating himself on a chair, placed it between his legs. He cocked the gun and then taking out the ramrod, placed it on the trigger, and putting the muzzle of the gun in his mouth, fired the fatal shot. The left side of his head was completely shot off and the celing and walls of the room were covered with the blood, brains and splintered bones of the dead man. The cries and wailing of the poor, distracted wife brought a crowd together and Sheriff Murphy and Judge Smart were called. A jury was promptly impanneled (sic) and an inquest held. No evidence was elicited which would tend to show any motive for the act. The jury rendered a verdict in accordance with the circumstances. The only way to explain the suicide, is to refer it to the usual cause-temporary insanity. The aged widow indeed deserves the sympathy of our citizens. Several years ago a bright little boy of hers was drowned. Last year her daughter, after a long and painful illness, died. And now her partner, who had been with her in all the toubles and joys of life, leaves her alone in the world. An only son, who owns a meat market on the North Side, is all that is left her. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, February 14, 1882 P. 1 ******** Death by suicide last Mon. of Ignaz Lorenz by self-inflicted gunshot wound. The article describes him as a bread baker and as an old man with white hair. The article goes into minute detail about the incident. Burial will take place Thurs. Der Nord Westen, 16 Feb. 1882 ******* SUICIDE An old man named Lorenz, a baker, well known as the person who used to travel with a hand cart, committed suicide on Monday by blowing his brains out. From circumstances made known at the coroner's inquest there cannot be much doubt that he contemplated the deed throughout the day. Some financial troubles and the loss of some of his children preyed so upon his mind that latterly(sic) he took to drinking although he had previously led a very temperate life. Monday he went around to all his customers and settled up his affairs. He then went home and having met his wife told her to tend to the oven as he wanted to smoke. He went into a room loaded a gun, sat on a chair, placed the muzzle of the gun in his mouth, discharged it by pressing the ramrod against the trigger and was in eternity in an instant. The charge blew the top of his head completely off and his brains were splattered over the ceiling. His wife heard the report and hurried into the room. He still sat in the chair with the gun in his hands and the ramrod still pressed against the trigger. An inquest was held before Judge Smart on Monday night. Herman A. Lorenzen, of this city, ex-alderman from the Sixth ward.. (line unreadable, underinked)..the street department, is dead as result of injuries sustained when he was struck by an automobile driven by Harold Seitz at Eighth and State streets at 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Mr. Lorenzen died while being removed to the hospital. He was found to have a fractured skull and other injuries and his face and body were badly bruised. Women See Accident Two women, Mrs. Napiezinski, Washington street this city, and Mr. Edward Kafka, Two Rivers, witnessed the accident and from statements today, it is believed that Mr. Lorenzen was north of the intersection of the street when struck by the Seitz car. Mr. Seitz failed to see the man in the mist and fog which prevailed and said today that the first knowledge he had of the accident was when he saw a dark form and felt the jar as the car struck the obstacle, later found to have been Lorenzen. “I was driving south to the Dick bakery and was proceeding at a slow speed because of the mist which clouded the windshield. I had reached a point just north of the intersection of Eighth and State when the crash occurred and I stopped the car on the opposite side of the crossing at the curb because I did not want to stop in the intersection,” Mr. Seitz said. “Mr. Lorenzen must have been struck by the car when he was almost across the street as when I stopped the body was on the right side of the car and the lamp on that side and the fender were damaged. I did not recognize Mr. Lorenzen and assisted in getting him into a car for the hospital and then reported the accident to the police department. I did not see the man and do not think there was any car coming from the south,” Seitz said. Mr. Seitz was greatly unnerved by the accident and was at his home most of today suffering from the shock. May Have Been Jay Walking From reports of witnesses it is probable that Mr. Lorenzen was hastening to cross the street and take a short cut to the curb as he is said to have started to run when the Seitz car approached. The crash, it is said by Mr. Seitz and corroborated by witnesses, came north of the intersection, indicating that Lorenzen was not on the crossing, although friends say that the unfortunate man was usually very careful. Was Born at Madison Mr. Lorenzen, 69, was born at Madison October 29, 1858 and came here in youth and was employed as a bookkeeper for early day firms. Later he located at Ironwood and was employed as a bookkeeper and hotel clerk and then returned here where for many years he has resided. He was a member of early day ball teams of the city and in his day an athlete. In 1904 Mr. Lorenzen was elected to the city council from the Sixth ward and served one term but later was re-elected for another term some years later. Since his retirement from the council he has served the city much of the time as an inspector of sewers. One brother, Christopher and a sister, Mrs. Martha Schade, both of this city survive Mr. Lorenzen. At the time of the accident, David Handl, a city employe who happened to pass, assisted in caring for Mr. Lorenzen.
