JOHN MILTON LOUNSBURY DEATH SUMMONS JOHN LOUNSBURY LOSES BATTLE FOR LIFE AFTER FOUR DAY FIGHT Well Known Business Man Dies As He Is Thought To Have Passed Crisis Apparently responding to treatments for bronchitis, which developed following his being overcome by fumes from a refrigerating plant in a North Eighth street grocery last Friday afternoon while he was adjusting it, John M. Lounsbury, prominent business man and civic leader of the city, suffered a sudden heart attack at one o’clock this morning at the Holy Family Hospital, where he was removed yesterday, and died in a few minutes. His passing was a distinct shock to the community, where he has been identified for the past twelve years. Mr. Lounsbury, who is president of the Lipman Sales Co. of Milwaukee, and sales manager of the Allwood Sales Co. of this city, had been called to a north side store Friday afternoon to make an adjustment in a refrigerating plant in the basement. He was working with Otto Kollath, a clerk in the store, when a nipple hose connection loosened almost at the same time that a light on an extension cord which Mr. Lounsbury was holding went out. Both Kollath and Mr. Lounsbury breathed some of the gasses from the machine but were able to make their way outside. Taken to Hospital Yesterday Mr. Lounsbury was able to drive to his home but was confined there with bronchitis developing. Physicians however believed that they had arrested the trouble but as a precaution he was removed to the hospital yesterday and early last evening appeared to have passed the crisis. His nurse had turned away from his bedside only for a moment at one o’clock when he suddenly was stricken with a heart attack and died in a few minutes. The deceased was 58 years of age, having been born Dec. 28, 1873 at Watertown, Wis. He spent his early life there and later located at Milwaukee. He was married in 1892 to Evelyn Rood of Waterloo, Wis. She passed away in this city in 1921. Mr. Lounsbury came to Manitowoc in the spring of 1920 and became identified with the Allwood Sales Co. and for the past few years has been head of the Lipman Sales Co., traveling in this territory. He was married here April 21, 1926 to Mabel Smith Killen who survives him with a daughter, Katherine Killen and a son, Ira of Madison, Wis. Four sisters, Mrs. Edward Strait, Mrs. Winsor Martin, Misses Dorothy and Helen Lounsbury, and one brother, Fremont?, all of Oak Park, Ill., also survive. Mr. Lounsbury was prominent in fraternal circles of the city, being a member of the Chapter, Council, Commandery, Consistory and Shrine of the Masonic order. He was the first commander of the Knights Templar of this city, when it was organized here. The deceased was also a member of th4 Rotary club and of the Elks lodge. Burial on Friday. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o’clock from the St. James Episcopal church, with Rev. Wm. Hood officiating and interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. The funeral arrangements will be in charge of the Blue Lodge No. 65 F. and A. M. with the Knights Templar officiating as escort. The remains will be removed to the home on North Fourth street from the Frazier mortuary tomorrow noon and will be taken to the St. James church at 11 o’clock Friday morning, where they may be viewed up to the time of the funeral. Ira Davis Lounsbury came to WI by way of canal from New York State in 1838. He cleared 25 acres of land in Dodge and Jefferson counties, and was granted several land patents. He then purchased the farm of his wife's father, Benjamin Piper, who was the first settler in the Village of Watertown, Jefferson County, WI. He came to the WI Territory in 1835, did some work, returned to NY to get his family, and then built a log cabin. He was the one who built the Watertown Plank Road going from Watertown to Milwaukee so that the farmers could get their products to market, without sinking with their carts, etc. Smart man. Later built an Inn by the Plank Road. Manitowoc County, of course, does not need this history, but we have some extremely early settlers in WI Territory. Their famly roots have been traced back to England, with the first ones being in America in the 1650s to 1700s. (All the above sent in by family researcher/see contributors page)

HAROLD LUCKOW Driver Drowns as Truck Goes Into Manitowoc River Harold Luckow, 53, 3610 Waldo Blvd., drowned when his pickup truck plunged into the Manitowoc River off the 500 block of Quay Street at 4:12 p.m. Sunday. Luckow, owner of Luckow Landscape and Nursery Service, had been hospitalized until 11 a.m. Sunday when he was released from Memorial Hospital. Dr. Theodore A. Teitgen, Manitowoc County coroner, reported. Police received a call from Emil Jagodinsky, 1008 Hamilton St., who said he saw a truck plunge into the river near the Anheuser-Busch Inc., towers. Officers and the police boat were dispatched. The Ewert and Schiesl Wrecker service tow truck was sent and hauled the vacant truck from the 23-foot deep river channel. Police in the boat hooked the body near the place where the truck was found. Dr. Teitgen ordered the body taken to the County Morgue, where his examination established drowning as the cause of death. Right Door Open Officer Leory J. Duveneck reported that tire tracks in the graveled parking lot adjacent to the river’s edge showed the gravel was torn up. The truck traveled northwest off the embankment into the river. When the truck was pulled from the water, the right door of the cab was open, the window on the driver’s side was rolled about half way down and the windshield on the driver’s side was broken out. Dr. Teitgen said there was no evidence of bodily injury. Police said that the truck’s brakes remained in “very good” condition and that the accelerator did not stick. CARL LUDWIG (d. 1921) FORMER FALLS PASTOR DIES AT HUTISFORD Funeral services for the late Rev. C.W. Ludwig, former pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Sheboygan Falls, will be held Thursday at Manitowoc, from the residence of Ernest H. Ludwig, brother of the deceased. While at Sheboygan Falls, the Rev. Ludwig was deservedly popular both as a minister and in social activities. He was a member of the Methodist Male quartet and was prominent in Masonic and Odd Fellow circles. He was grand chaplain for Wisconsin in the latter order. The Rev. Ludwig's malady was pernicious aenemia. In an effort to save his life, his brother, E.H. Ludwig of Manitowoc, on two occasions submitted to transfusion of blood but without benefit to the sufferer. The deceased is survived by a widow and by a son and daughter from a former marriage. Carl F. Ludwig. Manitowoc Herald News, Tues., Nov. 29, 1921 ********* FINE TRIBUTE IS PAID REV. LUDWIG - FORMER PASTOR OF LOCAL METHODIST CHURCH HONORED BY CHURCH AND HOME FRIENDS The following is an extract of a letter written the Tribune, telling about the tribute paid to the late Carl F. Ludwig, former pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church of this city, who died recently at Hustisford by the church of which he was a pastor, the state conference of the church, lead by the people of Hustisford. It is as follows: "The many Wisconsin Rapids friends of the late Rev. C.F. Ludwig will no doubt be interested to learn of the wonderful expression of love and regard shown on the occasion of his funeral by nearly every congregation he had served as pastor during the sixteen years of his connection with the Wisconsin Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His first appointment in the Conference was at Hustisford and Neosho. And it so happened that the last fifteen months of his life work was again at Hustisford. Among people who loved him and whom he learned to love. During his illness they were untiring in his devotion and helpfulness. And when the end came, they did everything that could be done to assist and relieve his widow from care and anxiety about the last sad rites. A funeral service was held at Hustisford, Waukesha, Hartford and Juneau and during the funeral every business house in the place was closed." The body was then taken to Manitowoc for burial that being the home of his aged father and mother and others of his family. In the home at Manitowoc, where the casket was placed, the room was literally filled with flowers, sent by personal friends and congregations and societies he had served. The principal funeral service was held in the large M.E. church and though the day was extremely stormy the room was filled with sorrowing and sympathetic friends. Pastors and laymen were present from Milwaukee, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls, Appleton, Green Bay, as well as the local Manitowoc churches. Rev. F.A. Pease of Sheboygan Falls, made the principal address doing so at the special request of Mrs. Ludwig and all bear testimony to his loveable character, his high ideas, his consecrated life and devotion to his work as a minister of the gospel. The burial service at the grave was in charge of the Masonic fraternity of which he was a member. Mr. Ludwig was a good man, true hearted, pure-minded, deeply religious and well-deserving of the title of "a Christian Gentleman". Ludwig, well known and popular business man of the city, came as a shock to wide circle of friends and as a blow to members of the family from which they have not yet ??????. Death followed an illness of one day and is said to have been ??? ???? ????tion Friday morning. Mr. Ludwig left his work late Friday afternoon feeling ill, grew gradually worse during the night and the end came Saturday afternoon as result of a coughingn (sic) spell that brought a hemorrhage. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon with services at the home, 1214 South Twelfth street, at 1:30 o'clock and at the German M.E. church at 2 o'clock. Burial will be at Evergreen and the services at the grave will be in charge of the local lodge of Masons of which Mr. Ludwig was a member. Mr. Ludwig had been in unusual health and good spirits during the week and on Wednesday evening, at a little gathering at the home, had discussed plans for remodelling the home during the coming summer. Friday morning he went to the knitting plant as usual and sometime during the morning assisted in moving some packing cases and in thus lending his assistance to the workmen, is believed to have ruptured a blood vessel. He was seized with a fainting spell late in the afternoon and left the plant for home where his condition became alarming and medical aid was summoned. His condition grew steadily more critical during the night but Saturday morning he appeared to make a gain. The end came unexpectedly at about 4:30 in the afternoon. Was But 49 Years of Age Ernest Ludwig was born in Westerburg, Germany, May 4, 1873 and was forty- nine years old. He came to tis country with his parents at the age of sixteen and for a number of years the family resided in the east where, at Brooklyn, N.Y. on Dec. 29, 1894 he was married to Emma Kaiser, the widow who survives him. Nineteen years ago the family came here to live, the parents of Mr. Ludwig also coming west. For two years he served as a superintendent in the Dennett Knitting Mills here and then in company with William H. Boenning he went into business for himself. Later the company erected the big plant, the Wisconsin Knitting Mills, on South Fourteenth street and built up a large and successful business. Only a short time ago the plant was mergered with the Cadett Knitting Mills, Mr. Ludwig being retained as local manager. Mr. Ludwig's death recalls the death of the Rev. Ludwig, brother of the deceased for whom he thrice underwent a blood transfusion in an effort to save his life, but without avail. Mr. Ludwig is survived only by his widow, his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Ludwig, South Fifteenth street and by a nephew and niece, Ernest Ludwig of Madison and Miss Beulah Ludwig, who visited here last week and left Thursday for Madison and from there Saturday for Memphis Tenn. Active in Masonry Mr. Ludwig was keenly interested in his adopted city, was a member of the city school commission, having been elected two years ago and previously to that time was a member of the vocational school board. He was a member of local Masonic bodies, being identified with the blue lodge, chapter and commandery and was an active worker in the fraternity having held many high offices. He was also a member of the local Rotary club, the United Commercial travelers and Modern Woodman and had an application in to become a member of the Elks. Mr. Ludwig was a devout member of the German M.E. church, assisted in all of the departments of the church work and of the Sunday school, was possessed of a fine voice, used it in the choir and gave unstintingly of his time and money in the furthering of the church work. "He is a good man gone home." One of the most wholesome of men, to know Ernest Ludwig was to respect him. He was deeply religious and practiced his religion every day of his life. Ever a cheery smile greeted you when you met him, with a hearty grip of the hand while cordial good fellowship radiated his entire being. He was beloved by his associates and in lodge and church shouldered more than his usual share of responsibilities never shirking a duty and giving unsparingly of his time and devotion to any good cause he espoused. His was an earnest, honest, truthful life - one that commended itself by its manifest sincerity. And with the passing of Ernest Ludwig there comes to end a life of noble character. It can be said of him he left this world without an enemy - every man who knew him his friend, what more fitting epitaph. ********** MANY FRIENDS PAY TRIBUTE TO E.H. LUDWIG The funeral of Ernest H. A ceremony performed at Westerburg, Germany, fifty years ago today, on February 5, 1871, was recalled by Rudolph Ludwig and his wife, then Miss Charlotte Merle and looking back over the years of their companionship they found nothing but happiness in a comradeship that has endured in the retrospect, and surrounded by their children, neighbors and friends who pledged anew the vows of a half century. The Ludwig home at 1158 S. Fifteenth is a happy one, doubly so today with three children gathered about the fireside with the bridal pair of years. A family reunion which was planned today in celebration of the golden jubilee, was joined this afternoon by many friends and this evening Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig will hold open house to receive in honor of the anniversary day. Mr. Ludwig, 77 and Mrs. Ludwig 74, are natives of the same village, Westerburg, in Germany, and their marriage was the outgrowth of a friendship formed in childhood. They came to America thirty-nine years ago locating at Brooklyn, N.Y., where the family made its home for sixteen years before coming to Manitowoc where Mr. Ludwig's son E.H. Ludwig became interested in the Wisconsin Kitting Mills, the family for three generations having been knitters. Mr. Ludwig Sr., up to a few months ago, was active at the mills here. Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig are in good health and today, in spirit, were young again. They are parents of three children, E.H. and Miss Amelia of this city and the Rev. C.K. Ludwig of Mayville, who yesterday arrived with his bride of a day, to join the celebration.
