HAROLD MAHNKE (d. 1923) SAFETY PIN BABE SWALLOWED IS CAUSE OF DEATH After suffering for three days with an open safety pin in his intestines, little Harold, the four-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Mahnke, passed away at Holy Family hospital last night. The child swallowed the pin Monday night and was removed to the hospital. There an x-ray revealed the pin was in his stomach. An operation was performed in an attempt to remove it, but in the meantime the pin had passed down into the child’s intestines and where it was impossible to remove it. It was expected for a few days that no serious effects would be suffered and that the child would get along nicely, but Wednesday night he took a turn for the worse and from then on his condition was critical. Death came at 8:20 last night. It is said that the pin was used to fasten the baby’s bib to his dress, and the child caught up the edge of the bib and put it in his mouth, the pin becoming unfastened. The case is the first of its kind at the local hospital and is said by physicians to be very rare. The funeral will be held at the Mahnke home, 504 Buffalo street, at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. JOACHIM MAHNKE (d. 1882) DIED: On Friday morning at his home in the city of Manitowoc, Joseph Mahnke(sic), aged twenty-four years. The deceased had been ill for a long time and death was hourly expected during the past few days by the sorrowing relatives and friends. He had ordered his relatives to sell out his stock of boots and shoes, and probably intended to remove to some climate more congenial to his health. But it was too late, "death had marked him as its own." He was a young man of excellent habits and character; true to his friends and kind to all, he won the good will of all with whom he came in contact. His active nature and energy never allowed him to remain idle, and even during his illness he was anxious to do some kind of work. The afflicted wife and relatives are joined in their sorrow by a large circle of friends, whose sympathy they can be assured of.
