ERNA MITTNACHT WEST SIDE WOMAN SEVERELY BURNED WHEN CLOTHING IS FIRED BY BLAZING PAPER Mrs. Lester Mittnacht, 24, in Precarious Condition at Hospital as Result of Accident at Her Home this Morning. Body Badly Burned Suffering from severe burns to her body, sustained when her clothing was ignited while she was starting a fire at her home on Twenty-sixth street early today, Mrs. Lester Mittnacht is at the hospital in precarious condition and grave fears are entertained for her life. The accident happened at 9 this morning. Mrs. Mittnacht, who is 24 and whose husband is employed as a brakeman on the Northwestern road, had laid a fire in the stove, using paper but it failed to burn and she made another attempt, lighting the paper, the flame from which burst from the stove and ignited her skirt, which in a second was a blaze. Suffering from pain and fright Mrs. Mittnacht rushed from the house into the open air where the wind fanned the flames and in a moment the woman was a living torch, her clothing being completely aflame. Cries of Mrs. Mittnacht attracted the attention of workmen at the Home Builders’ addition near by and Edward Herman and others rushed to her assistance, but not before she had been seriously burned. Mr. Herman secured a blanket and with others succeeded in smothering the flames after pulling part of the burning clothing from the woman’s body. The ambulance was called and Mrs. Mittnacht was removed to the hospital where Drs. Meany and Hammond attended her. It was found upon examination that Mrs. Mittnacht had suffered extremely severe burns, one half of the body on the back and limbs being terribly affected and she suffered greatly. The most severe burns are about the limbs though the back is also badly burned. The face and neck escaped severe injury. Mrs. Mittnacht is 24 years of age and the wife of Lester Mittnacht, who is employed as a brakeman by the Northwestern line. She is the mother of two small children. Physicians said this afternoon that Mrs. Mittnacht’s condition was serious but that there was a chance that she would survive. MITTNACHT SATURDAY PROVE FATAL, PASSES AWAY AT HOSPITAL Burns which she suffered a few days ago when her clothing was fired while she was lighting a fire at her home, proved fatal for Mrs. Lester Mittnacht, Twenty-sixth street, Mrs. Mittnacht passing away at the hospital this morning. Mrs. Mittnacht was severely burned about the body, her back and legs having been terribly affected by the flames which enveloped her body as she rushed from her home into the air following discovery that her skirts had caught fire from the stove. Mrs. Peter Mittnacht, mother in law of the unfortunate victim and E.R. Herman, who was engaged at work near by, rushed to assistance of the woman and succeeded in smothering the flames but not before fatal burns had been inflicted. Mrs. Mittnacht was removed to the hospital and hopes were entertained that she would live but the shock was too great. Mrs. Mittnacht, nee Ernestine Post, adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hopf, was 22 years of age, having been born May 2, 1895. Surviving are the husband, two sons, Peter and George, the former a railway mail clerk and the later one of the operators at the Chicago and North Western depot and five grandchildren. Her first thought always for the home and family Mrs. Mittnacht worked hard and endured many privations in early life that the family might enjoy the good things of life. She was an ardent church member and belonged to the altar society of Sacred Heart. News of her death will cause regret among old friends and comes as a shock to the family because she was "mother" always. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. PETER C. MITTNACHT PETER MITTNACHT FATALLY INJURED AT CROSSING VETERAN MAIL CLERK DIES AT HOSPITAL HERE P.J. Walterbach Was Driver of Death Car; Inquest Is To Be Held Peter C. Mittnacht, 51??, veteran railway mail clerk, was struck and fatally injured early last evening at the corner of North Eighth and Park streets while he was enroute to church services by a car driven by P.J. Walterbach, 26, of 1417 Hamilton street. Rushed to the Holy Family hospital by Mr. Walterbach, Mittnacht lingered for six hours when a skull fracture which he suffered proved fatal. Announcement was made today that an inquest would be held probably after the funeral, and Sheriff Herman Carstens, on orders of Coroner A.F. Stueck, impaneled a jury. Mr. Mittnacht had left his home, 715 North Tenth street, shortly after 5 p.m. to attend services at the Sacred Heart church. He reached the corner of Park and North Eighth street and started across the walk to the east side of the street just as Walterbach, driving a small coupe, came south on Eighth street. Mittnacht was knocked to the pavement by the force of the impact as Walterbach applied the brake in a vain effort to avoid striking him. Taken to Hospital Walterbach climbed from his car immediately and placed the injured man in it and started for the Holy Family hospital, where Dr. Meany attended the patient. An examination disclosed that Mr. Mittnacht had suffered a fractured skull, broken arm and injuries to his skull. He was conscious most of…(1-2 lines unreadable)… the first he knew of his danger was when the car was on him and he stretched his arms out over the radiator of the machine. Walterbach, who was employed as a salesman and an erector, remained with the injured man from the time he reached the hospital until Mr. Mittnacht passed away at midnight. He then proceeded to the police station and gave the officers there the details of the accident. One of those present at the time of the accident was Querin C. Delsman, North Tenth street, who was driving his car north on Eighth street. Taught School The death of Mr. Mittnacht was a sad blow in his home here where he was a loving father and dutiful husband. Born in Branch 51 years ago, he took up teaching at the age of 17 years, presiding over schools at Mishicot, Reifs Mills and Four Corners. Later he became a railroad telegrapher, locating at Wausau and then took the civil service examinations for railway mail clerk, which he passed. For the last 23 years he had been engaged in these duties, having a run between Milwaukee and Eland Junction on the North Western road. The deceased was married in 1911 to Miss Rose Kellner in this city and they made their home here since. She survives with three sons, Cyril, 17, Daniel, 14, and Paul, 10, his aged father, George Mittnacht, Sr., aged 79 years, who makes his home with his son here, and one brother, George, Jr., of Milwaukee. The deceased was a member of the Sacred Heart church here, and of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name society. Funeral Thursday The remains were removed to the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home, and the funeral will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Sacred Heart church with interment in Evergreen cemetery. Sheriff Carstens impaneled a jury composed of Walter Golding, Reuben Spoentgen, Anton Karnofsky, Otto Kuehne, Frances Scheurell and Joseph Pitsch which viewed the remains and then adjourned to await announcement at the time of the inquest. JOSEPH MLADA TERRIBLE EXPLOSION OF DYNAMITE. An explosion last Friday afternoon stunned this community with its suddenness and the completeness of its destruction. The dynamite contained in the shed maintained on the Maresch farm by Joseph Mlada, a north side merchant, for the purpose of storing explosives "blew up," snuffing out of existence Mr. Mlada so completely that only small pieces of charred human remains were found. Mr. Mlada was local agent for a Michigan powder house and kept in stock a large quantity of explosives in this building which was built for the purpose 500 feet north of the north Rapids road, in the ravine where the old "pest house" was formerly located. Expecting a call from a state inspector Mr. Mlada went out Friday to check up his supply of dynamite. There is said to have been about two ton in stock there. He left Mr. Maresh at the road and went up the ravine alone. At 3:10 in the afternoon the people for miles around were startled by an explosion. It shook the city and a dense could of white smoke rose high and indicated the source of the detonation. Plate glass in stores two miles away were shattered. Nearly every house for a mile around had windows broken. The shock was felt a distance of some fifteen miles. Early arrivals on the scene picked up small fragments of human remains, the largest an inch or two long. Enough to fill a small jar was patiently gathered. It is all that was left of Joseph Mlada. Where the dynamite house stood there is a large excavation. Everything in the immediate vicinity seems to have been consumed. Of the building only a few small pieces were found. A blanket of green leaves settled over everything near. Large nearby trees were uprooted and tossed quite a distance. A barn about 20 rods away, and protected by the bank of the ravine, was wrecked. Trees for a long distance were stripped of their foliage, and those for some distance of bark. To the deadening effect of the sides of the ravine is due the escape from a greater destruction of property and possibly life. How the accident occurred must remain merest conjecture and surmises can serve no purpose. Lured by the gruesome details thousands of people visited the scene beginning Friday afternoon and continuing Sunday.
