HAROLD R. PETERSEN PETERSON(sic) ABOARD SIBONEY, REPORTED GASSED AT SOISSONS One of the more than 3,000 returning United States soldiers aboard the transport Siboney, which reached New York last night, Corp. Harold Peterson, of this city, in a message to his mother, Mrs. Jule Peterson, announced his safe arrival and his early return to this city. Corp. Peterson is still suffering from the effects of having been gassed by the enemy of Soissons, his name being listed in New York dispatches today as one of the men aboard the boat, with notation that he had been gassed. Corp. Peterson was a member of the 107th Engineers which corps suffered heavy casualties in the war, according to members who returned aboard the Siboney. In recent letters Corp. Peterson told of his work in building bridges under fire and of other experiences but made no reference to having been wounded or gassed. Troops returning aboard the Siboney were for the most part members of the Blackhawk division, which went from Camp Grant. A New York dispatch says: “The entire 332nd artillery, with 1,364 men and 67 officers were on board with 17 officers of the Blackhawk infantry division and 109 men. The 109 men are all top sergeants, maintaining at least the skeleton of the division organization. The men of the 332nd artillery never reached the firing line. They had been in training near Bordeaux, they said, and were ordered to the front the day before the armistice was signed. The 331st and the 332nd field artillery regiments, they declared, are now either on the way back or are at some port ready to embark. While the Blackhawk division as a unit never reached the firing line, the troops passed through a severe epidemic of influenza and there were heavy casualties, the men said. It broke out on shipboard while they were being transported from the United States to England, continued the ravages in camp in England and lasted some time after they arrived in France.” Manitowoc Herald News, Saturday, January 04, 1919 Page 1 ********** HAROLD PETERSON, BACK FROM FRANCE TELLS OF WONDERFUL WORK OF THE AMERICANS Harold Peterson, who was a member of the 107th U.S. Engineers and saw severe fighting in France is back in Manitowoc and says this city is plenty good enough for him. He arrived last night from Milwaukee, accompanying his mother, Mrs. Juul Peterson here. Peterson who was formerly employed as an electrician at the A.O. Anderson company, left here early in the war, he with a young lad named Patterson, a Western Union operator being the first to enlist from this city with the engineers. Peterson was in a hospital in France for three months as a result of drinking poisoned water. Before going overseas he was in the hospital with an attack of scarlet fever. Peterson was under fire several times, participating in the American drives at Chateau Thierry and at Soissons. He was loud in his praise of the Red Cross over there and said ? of American boys would have perished were it not for the women and work done by the organization. Peterson declared that the fighting that the American boys ? in the closing days of the war was simply wonderful. The loss on both sides was terrible. HIRAM PETTIT ITEMS FROM THE PILOT FILES. FIFTY YEARS AGO. ANOTHER VICTIM OF THE WAR- The subjoined letter from a Chaplain in the Rebel army gives the particulars of the wounding and probable death of Hiram A. Pettey(sic), son of Mr. A. Pettey of this village, in one of the recent battles before Petersburg. His age was about eighteen. Petersburg, July 18, 1864. ********* Mr. Pettey(sic)- Dear Sir: Your son, H. H. Pettey, Co. B. 36th Wis. reg., was mortally wounded on the 1st of June and brought to the field infirmary of Heth's division that night. Early next morning I found him, anxious for a spiritual adviser, he being perfectly conscious that his wound was mortal-being shot badly thro' the lungs. I read portions of the scriptures to him and prayed with him several times, which seemed to comfort him very much. In compliance with his request to inform his mother that he died a Christian, I write you these few lines. He told me that he had never made a profession of religion, but that God had pardoned his sons, and repeated with emphasis, "Jesus can make a dying bed as soft as downy pillow are.." He was put in an ambulance and started to a hospital, but I doubt very much whether he lived to get there: so I cannot inform you how long he lived or where he was buried; but feeling confident that he could not live long, He requested me to send home his sister's photograph, which I enclose. He bore marks of being well trained. R.S. Webb, Chaplain 44th N.C. Troops. Manitowoc Pilot, August 27, 1914 P. 1
