AUGUST RIEBE AUGUST RIEBE, WHO FOUNDED SHEEP FARM, DIES ONE MONTH AFTER DEATH OF HIS BROTHER August R.W. Riebe, a resident of the city since 1904 when he established the Manitowoc sheep farm, died at his home, 916 Madison street last night, after an illness of five days of pneumonia. Mr. Riebe’s death occurred just a month to a day, from that of his brother who died at Hokah, Minn., Jan. 1, 1917. Mr. Riebe was a native of Germany, born Jan. 9, 1845 and served in the Prussian army in the Franco Prussian war in 1870. He came to America in 1872 and in 1874 was married here. Mr. Riebe came here in 1901 and established the sheep farm. Besides his widow he is survived by one son, Erwin. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon from the German M.E. church. CECILIA A. RIEBE Cecilia A. Riebe, age 64, of 2315 Risch Lane, Manitowoc, died on Thursday morning, Feb. 12, 2009, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. She was born on March 30, 1944, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Leonard and Marie (Jacoboski) Pikulik. Cecilia was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of 1962. She then attended University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc and Silver Lake College. Cecilia also received her nursing degree from Holy Family School of Nursing. While attending school, Cecilia joined the U.S. Army Reserve and served in 1968 as a second lieutenant at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, Calif. She returned to Manitowoc and was employed with Holy Family Hospital, retiring in 1997. On Aug. 24, 1968, she married Kenneth L. Riebe at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Cecilia was a volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Society. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) She was also preceded in death by two sisters-in-law: Ruth Riebe and June Boswell. RUTH ANN RIEBE Ruth Ann Riebe, age 58, of 605 Cleveland Ave., Manitowoc, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay. CLARA RIECK Mrs. Arthur Rieck, 66, died at her home, 1124 Philippen street, this morning. She had been ill only a short time. Mrs. Rieck, nee Clara Lutze, was born in Centerville in 1883, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lutze. In 1907 she was married to Mr. Rieck at Centerville where they made their home until 1924. Mr. Rieck is a carpenter contractor. In 1924 they moved to Manitowoc. ESTHER M. RIECK Esther M. Rieck, age 96, a longtime resident of 1124 Philippen Street, Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Saturday, May 31, 2015 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc where she had resided the past ten years. Esther was born on November 17, 1918 in Manitowoc. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Clara (Lutze) Rieck. She was educated in Manitowoc and was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1936. Esther spent her working career as a manager of cosmetic departments at several stores including Burstedies Drugs, Boston Store, Johnson Hills, and North End Drug Store. She also provided home care services for many years. Esther was a lifelong member of First German Ev. Lutheran Church. She was an avid Green Bay Packer football fan with season tickets for many years. She is survived by one nephew: William Siggelkow, Rochester, MN; grandnieces and grandnephews: Lisa Siggelkow Williams, Myrtle Beach, SC; Amy Siggelkow (Mark) Duffing, Minnetonka, MN; Robert G. Siggelkow, Charleston, SC; Thomas Siggelkow, Rochester, MN; Mark (Sara) Siggelkow, Zion, IL; along with two great-grand nieces and three great-grand nephews. PAUL G. RIEDERER Paul G. Riederer, age 68, of 2025 Menasha Ave., Manitowoc, died Thursday afternoon, November 16, 1995, at St. Luke's Hospital, Milwaukee. He was born January 14, 1927, the son of the late John and Sophia Brandl Riederer. He attended St. Andrew School, graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945, attended Milwaukee School of Engineering and graduated from Manitowoc Business College. Paul served with the United States Army Infantry from 1944-1946, primarily in Cebu and Leyte in the Phillipines. He was employed at Eastman Manufacturing Company and its successors as Head Accountant, Division Controller and Branch Manager of the Atlanta Plant. He retired in 1987 after 38 years of service. He was also employed by Olson Transportation and Northern Laboratories. He did accounting for a number of small businesses as well. Paul was a very active member of the Newton Lions and served as an officer and board member. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie #706, American Legion Drews Blesser Post #88, and Holy Innocents Catholic Church. He was very active with the Boy Scouts, serving as Cub Master and scout leader at St. Andrew's. An active sports enthusiast, Paul played softball and hardball with a number of local teams. He avidly followed his sons in cross country and track and his daughters in swimming. He married Catherine McCarthy September 24, 1949, at Holy Innocents, Catholic Church, Manitowoc. He is survived by his wife, Catherine, Manitowoc; sons, Peter J. ARNOLD G. RIEMER Arnold Riemer, 46, 507 South 27th street, died at 10:45 last night at the Holy Family hospital. He entered the hospital Friday, ill with pneumonia. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:45 o’clock from the Pfeffer funeral home, the Rev. Gilbert Wernecke officiating. Burial will be made in the Evergreen cemetery. GEORGE RIEMERSMA George Riemersma, 50, oiler on the carferry Pere Marquette 21, and a World War veteran, died early today at Ludington, Mich., following a brief illness. Mr. Riemersma's home was at 611 Huron street in this city. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Riemersma was born in Zeland, Mich., in 1889. He enlisted for service in the World War and was a cook in the 337th Field hospital unit, which was part of the United States Russian expedition, shortly after the end of the war. AUGUST RIETZ Death is rapidly thinning the ranks of pioneer residents of the city, two more having responded to the call to eternal rest, August Reitz(sic), for thirty years a shoemaker and merchant of the city having died Saturday after a long will illness due to chronic ailment. Mr. Reitz, a native of Germany, came to Manitowoc in the 50's with his parents and when he attained age, engaged in business conducting a shoe store on Tenth Street up to the time of his death. HERMANN RIETZ HERMAN (sic) RIETZ RESIDENT HERE 61 YRS, DEAD Pioneer Harness Man and Long Resident, Died Last Night HERE SINCE CHILD OF 3 YEARS OLD Herman Frederick Rietz, for years engaged in business as a harness maker and a member of the firm of Rietz & Plantico, Washington street, died at his home, 1015 Washington street, at 7 o’clock last night over an illness that was of a year’s duration. Mr. Rietz suffered from an incurable malady and for weeks had abandoned hope of recovery and death was not unexpected. Mr. Rietz was 64 years of age and had been a resident of Manitowoc for 61 years, coming here with his parents as a child of three years. He was born in Bohemia, his parents coming to America soon after his birth. Mr. Rietz engaged in business as a harness maker and in 1881 became associated with Charles Plantico and the firm has conducted a shop and store on Washington street for more than 30 years. A widow and five children survive Mr. Rietz. Dr. Paul Rietz, Dr. Arthur Rietz, and Mrs. W. P. Woods, all of Evansville, Ind.; Hugo C. Rietz of Los Angeles, Cal.; and Walter H. LOUISE RIETZ DEATH COMES TO MRS. RIETZ AT HOSPITAL Mrs. Louisa Rietz, widow of August Rietz, died at the Holy Family hospital at 9:30 this morning. She had been ill since last summer and a week ago underwent an operation for gall stones in the hope that it would bring her relief from suffering. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the home of her son, Harry Spiegel, Washington street, the Rev. Karl Machmiller officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen. Mrs. Louisa Rietz, nee Wilsman, was born at Dunkirk, New York August 15, 1859 and came to Wisconsin with her parents at the age of eight, the family taking up its home at Mishicot. Here she was married in 188? to William Spiegel who died six years later. A few years later she was married to August Rietz and the family made their home in this city. Mr. Rietz died fifteen years ago and for the last three years she has made her home with her son. Surviving Mrs. Rietz are one son Harry Spiegel, one brother, Harry Wilsman of Neillsville, a sister, Mrs. Mary Monka of Two Rivers and four grandchildren. HUGHIN RILEY Death in Menominee, Mich. on Thurs. last week of 85-yr. old Hugh Riley, a former resident of Kings Bridge in our county. He had settled in Kings Bridge in 1847 and lived there until moving to Menominee a year ago. The body was brought to Kings Bridge and buried there Sun. afternoon under the direction of the Local Post of the G.A.R., of which the deceased was a member. He leaves his wife and 7 children. ******* VETERAN HEARS SOUND OF TAPS Hugh Riley, Pioneer of County, Finishes Life Journey, Aged 85 Taps have been sounded for another civil war veteran and one more pioneer of Manitowoc County has joined the increasing majority of the silent, word being received here of the death at Menominee Thursday of Hugh Riley, a former Kings Bridge resident. Mr. Riley who was 85 years of age having been born at Acrington, England, March 17, 1819 and came to America when twenty-six years of age, locating in Manitowoc County in 1847 since which time he has been a continuous resident until a year ago when he tookk up his home with his children at Menominee. At the time of the civil war Mr. Riley served with the Thirty-Second Wisconsin regiment and has been a prominent member of the H.M. Walter Post G.A.R. of late years. In early days, deceased was one of the leading residents of the county, prominent in the community in which he resided and was always held in esteem as a man of high character and patriotism. A widow and seven children survive, James Riley, Milwaukee; George Riley and Mrs. Henry Spencer, Menominee; Mrs. Wm Robinson, Mrs. Eliz. Westgate, Kings Bridge; Mrs. John Johnson, Shell Lake. The body will be brought here and taken to Kings Bridge being returned to the city for burial at Evergreen Sunday. H.M. Walker Post G.A.R. will have charge of the funeral. PIONEER PASSES AWAY Last Thursday, March 7, Mrs. Hughin Riley, one of the pioneers of this county, passed away at the old Riley homestead in Kossuth. Mrs. Riley, whose maiden name was Martha Burges, was born in the county of Dembydale, Yorkshire, England, on April 25, 1820. This makes her nearly eighty-seven years old. She came to this country when she was twenty-four years of age, and worked under her half- brother John Shaw, as a weaver at Stiveson Falls, Columbia county, New York. Later she went to Olneyville, a small town near Providence, Rhode Island. At this place she met and married Mr. Riley. Shortly after, Mr. Riley came west to take up a homestead. Eighteen months later Mrs. Riley came and the couple took up their residence at Neshoto. In the spring of 1852 Mrs. Riley and her husband settled on a farm in Kossuth. During the civil war, when Mr. Riley was in the south, Mrs. Riley and family struggled bravely on with the work on the farm. Mrs. Riley was the mother of seven children, all of whom are living. The oldest, Mrs. Fred E. Westgate, lives on a farm near Kingsbridge; Mary, now Mrs. John Johnson, lives at Frederic, Polk Co; Sarah, now Mrs. Henry Spencer of Menominee, Mich.; Harriet, now Mrs. Wm. Robinson, who resided on the homestead in Kossuth; James of Milwaukee; and John and George of Menominee, Mich. On the 7th of June, 1904, while the old couple were residing at Menominee, Mich., Mr. Riley passed away. Mrs. Riley remained in Menominee for two years. A short time ago she came to live with her daughter on the old farm. The funeral of Mrs. Riley was held at Manitowoc from the old farm. Rev. CHARLES L. RINDT In ill health for several months, Charles L. Rindt, 75, 4812 14th street, Two Rivers, a veteran employe of the Lakeside Packing company and superintendent of the canning plant in Two Rivers from 1911 until its close a number of years ago, died shortly before noon today at the Municipal hospital. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Beduhn funeral home, the Rev. T. A. Hawkes, pastor of Grace Congregational church, officiating. Interment will be in Forest View cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Beduhn funeral home from 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon and until the hour of services. Mr. Rindt, before going to Two Rivers, had been engaged with the Sears and Nickels Canning company for many years and had held positions in Ohio and Michigan. When the interests of E. J. Vandrieul, founder of the Two Rivers canning factory, were taken over by the late L.E. Wedertz, Mr. Rindt was engaged to supervise the plant. He remained at the plant when the Lakeside Packing company took over, and after the close of the Two Rivers plant worked in the company’s plants at Manitowoc and Sheboygan. He retired in January, 1935. Charles Rindt was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, on July 5, 1862. In 1901 he married Miss Helen Franklin, who survives with four children, two sisters, and two grand- children. The children are Mrs. Wanda Duket of this city, Mrs. Audrey Thorpe of Green Bay, Charles Jr., of Rhinelander, and Roger of Milwaukee. Mrs. Elizabeth Spetnagel and Mrs. Etta Parrett, both living in Ohio, are sisters. HELENA E. RINDT Mrs. Charles L. Rindt, 87, formerly of 1243 N. North St., Manitowoc, died Monday afternoon after a lingering illness. Funeral services will be 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home and at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Claude LeCLair will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mrs. Rindt, nee Helen Franken, was born May 11, 1881, in Germany, daughter of the late John and Hubertine Bishop Franken. She came to the United States with her father when she was four years of age, and was married Dec. 7, 1902, to Mr. Rindt at Pentwater, Mich. The couple lived at Two Rivers from 1911 until his death in 1937. In 1950 Mrs. Rindt began residing with her daughter, Mrs. Gerald Duket, at Manitowoc. Survivors are two sons, Charles of Falls Church, Va., and Roger of Appleton; two daughters, Mrs. Duket of Manitowoc and Mrs. Kenneth Thorpe of Green Bay; two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. EDWARD F. RINGMEIER Farmer Dies of Injuries A 61-year-old rural Manitowoc man died Thursday night of injuries sustained in a farm accident. Edward Ringmeier was found by his son, Roger, of Rt. 4, (Logwood Lane), Manitowoc, in a hayfield where the senior Ringmeier who had been chopping hay went to unhook the haywagon from a tractor. The tractor has a hand clutch, and it was in a forward gear. Edward Ringmeier thought it was in reverse and pushed on the clutch. The tractor lurched forward, knocked him to the ground and ran over him twice before it went into a tight circle and stopped. The accident happened about 3:30 p.m. and Ringmeier was found by his son about 7 p.m. Manitowoc Ambulance Service was summoned about 7:30 p.m. and Ringmeier was removed to Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc. Manitowoc County Coroner James E. Powers notified the Manitowoc County Sheriff Traffic Dept. that Ringmeier died at 8:59 p.m. from massive internal injuries. AMELIA H. RISCH Amelia H. Risch, age 89, of 4306 Delta St., Manitowoc, died on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at the Manitowoc Health & Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc. She was born on Feb. 12, 1921, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Rezek) Novy. Amelia was a graduate of Brockville Grade School. In November of 1941, she married Robert H. Risch Sr., in Dubuque, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Jan 31, 1977. Amelia was employed with Sears, Pranges and Younkers Department stores, all of Manitowoc, for many years. ARTHUR RISCH Arthur Risch, 50, of 1042 Menasha avenue, a traveling salesman and former Rockwood store operator, dropped dead of a heart attack late Wednesday after- noon at Sheboygan. Mr. Risch was calling on trade for his employe, the Sprague-Warner Company of Chicago, when he was taken suddenly ill in the Rammer meat market, on South 15th street in Sheboygan. He died before the arrival of a physician. Mr. Risch was born in Sheboygan county in 1891. Shortly after his parents moved to Manitowoc county. When a young man he took a position with the Plumb and Nelson Company in this city as a salesman, continuing in this capacity until 1923. He moved to Rockwood, five miles northwest of the city where he opened a general store. Disposing of this business two years ago Mr. Risch entered the employ of the Chicago wholesale house, covering eastern Wisconsin territory. In 1914 Mr. Risch married Miss Elsie Lehmkuhl of this city. She survives with three sons, Richard of Fond du Lac, Paul and Robert of this city; daughter, Mrs. Lee Pfefferkorn, of Rockwood; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Schwake of Milwaukee, Mrs. Elmer Bertolaet, of Palmyra, Wis.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home, the Rev. Carl Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. AUGUSTA RISCH MRS. F. RISCH, CO. PIONEER, DIES AT AGE 91 Mrs. Fred Risch, a pioneer resident of the county, passed away Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Helen Fischer, 712 North Water street, her demise being due to infirmities incident to old age, she having passed her ninety-first birthday on April 2. The funeral will be held from the home of the daughter Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the Rev. Menke officiating and burial will be at Evergreen. Born near Steetin, Germany, April 2, 1835, Mrs. Risch was married in that country and came to the United States with her husband and parents in May 1864. The families took up their home in Milwaukee county, where they lived for fourteen years and then came to Manitowoc where Mrs. Risch has since lived. Her husband preceded her in death twenty-one years ago and she is survived by three children, Mrs. Helen Fischer, with whom she made her home, William and Herman Risch, all of this city. She was married June 22, 1914, to Arthur Risch at Manitowoc and they lived in Manitowoc until 1923 when they moved to Rockwood and operated a general store there. They returned to Manitowoc in 1942. HERMAN RISCH RISCH DIES AT HOME OF DAUGHTER Former Resident Here At Milwaukee at Time of His Death Herman Risch, 63, until ? months ago a resident of Manitowoc, died unexpectedly in Milwaukee at 7 am today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lillian Schwanke. While Mr. Risch had been in ill health for some time, his death was not expected. Six months ago he sold his home in this city and went to Rockwood to reside with his son Arthur, proprietor at a general merchandise store. Three weeks ago Mr. Risch went to Milwaukee to visit at the home of his daughter, where his death occurred. He leaves his son, Arthur of Rockwood and two daughters, Mrs. Schwanke of Milwaukee and Mrs. Emma Bertelt? Of Madison. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Risch left Rockwood this morning for Milwaukee to make arrangements for the funeral. JOHANNA RISCH STRICKEN AS SHE DRIVES ON THE STREET Mrs. H. Risch Suffers Stroke of Paralysis Today Stricken by paralysis while driving on Clark street early this morning, Mrs. Herman Rusch, a well known North side resident, is reported in a critical condition at her home on N. Fourteenth street. Mrs. Risch was waiting for a train on which her son, Arthur, a salesman for the Plumb & Nelson Co., was expected and was driving at Clark and Thirteenth streets when John Maurer, a railway man, noticed that she appeared to be helpless and stopped the horse. Officer Dueno accompanied Mrs. Risch to her home and a physician was called. Her condition is said to be serious. RISCH Well Known Resident Passes Away at Home on 14th Street Death like a messenger of Peace entered the home of Hiram Risch on North 14th street, last evening, claiming the beloved wife and mother. Mrs. Risch was born in the town of Gibson Jan. 18, 1817 [sic] and was 47 years old at the time of her death. Many friends will regret the death of Mrs. Risch who was known for her charity and helpfulness and to help friends and those in distress. She was very patient during her long illness, although she knew that death was near. She is survived by her husband, one son and two daughters, Mrs. Walter Schwake of Milwaukee and Edna and Arthur of this city. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Leopold Kind, and one brother, Henry Loeb, both of Larrabee. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon from the late home. RICHARD W. RISCH Richard W. Risch, age 77, of 1032 N. 40th St., Manitowoc, died Sunday morning, September 20, 1992, at the Holy Family Memorial Medical Center in Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 23, 1992, 10 a.m. at the Pfeffer Funeral Home. Officiating the service will be the Rev. David Ruby. Military committal services will be accorded by the Manitowoc AMVET'S Post No. 99, at the Knollwood Mosoleum (sic). He was born February 15, 1915, in Manitowoc, son of the late Arthur and Lehmkuhl Risch. He married the former Georgiana Ragen. Mr. Risch was a graduate of the Manitowoc Lincoln High School class of 1933 and was employed with the Wisconsin Fuel and Light Company until his retirement in 1976. After his retirement he was also employed on a part-time basis in the sales department of Schuette's Department Store and The Appliance and TV Warehouse. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre from 1942 until 1945. He was a member of the Manitowoc AMVET'S Post No. 99. ROBERT H. RISCH SR. Robert H. Risch Sr., 58, of 4306 Delta St., Manitowoc, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. David Passet will officiate with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Risch was born March 28, 1918, at Manitowoc, son of the late Arthur and Elsie Lehmkuhl Risch. He was educated in Two Rivers and was graduated from Washington High School in 1936. He married Amelia H. Novy Nov. 20, 1941, at Dubuque, Iowa. Mr. Risch was in the U.S. Army in World War I from 1943 to 1945, serving in the infantry in the European Theater. He was a machine operator for Schuster Construction Co. and a member of American Legion Drews-Bleser Post 88 of Manitowoc. WILLIAM RISCH William Risch, 74, of 432 North Ninth street, retired cemetery attendant, died Sunday at the Holy Family hospital following a short illness. DITLEF G. RISTAD, REV. Dr. Ristad, Knighted Clergyman, Educator and Author, is Dead Funeral Services For Famous Local Pastor Set For Thursday Dr. D. G. Ristad, 74, pastor of the First Lutheran church of this city since 1923, who in 1930 was cited by King Haakon of Norway for distinguished service in the interests of Americans of Norwegian descent, died at 8:40 o’clock this morning at Holy Family hospital of heart disease. He had been ill for five months. He made his last appearance in the chancel of his church at the Easter services on April 17. His condition became serious shortly thereafter and although he rallied later, he was in failing health throughout the summer. He was removed to the hospital 2-1/2 weeks ago. Funeral Thursday The body will lie in state at the Frazier Mortuary. The funeral will be conducted by Dr. L. W. Boe, president of St. Olaf college, Northfield, Minn., at the First Lutheran church Thursday at 2 p.m. with burial in Evergreen cemetery. Private services for the family will be held at the residence, 711 No. 9th street. Dr. Ristad was former president of the eastern district of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America. He was elevated from the vice-presidency in 1936 and served that year and through the following year. In addition his wide range of activities included affiliation with Norwegian educational and cultural groups, in which he was considered an authority, and many civic and cultural activities in the city of Manitowoc. The survivors are the widow, the former Sarah Johnson of Milwaukee who he married Oct. 28, 1896, two sons, G. Rolf, city, and Robert, Chicago, and one sister, Mrs. Olga Bronbo, of Skage, Namdalen, Norway, and four grandchildren. One son, Alf, preceded him in death. Born in Norway Dr. Ristad was born in Namdalen, Norway, Nov. 22, 1863. He was graduated from Normal college in Norway in 1882 and came to the United States five years later. For five years prior to leaving his native land he was a high school teacher. He was ordained to the Norwegian Lutheran ministry at West Koshkonong church, Dane county, Aug. 1, 1892. From 1892 until 1901 he was pastor of the East Koshkonong church and then went to Albion academy as principal, a position he held until 1906. For the next ten years he was president of the Park Region college at Refgus Falls, Minn. In 1916 he became president of the Lutheran Ladies seminary at Red Wing, Minn. In addition to editing the paper he became correspondent for several eastern trade journals and New York newspapers. In the fall of 1922 he became pastor of the First Lutheran church in this city. His activities in behalf of the Norwegians in this country included presidency of the Norwegian American Historical association, Tronderlaget of America, and directorship of a committee for the erection of a memorial altar in Nidaros Cathdedral, Norway. Knight of St. Olaf In 1930 he was made a Knight of St. Olaf by the Norwegian government when he went to Norway as representative of the Council of Provincial societies in the United States to the celebration in which Norway observed the 900th anniversary of its Christian- ization. In Norway, the rank of St. Olaf is the highest mark of governmental apprec- iation to its subjects. It carries with it the title “Sir.” Distinction of being one of the reception committee to greet the Sonlandet, full-rigger sailing vessel from Norway, at Chicago, was accorded Dr. Ristad in 1933. He was also a member of the group which arranged for the Norwegian American exhibit at A Century of Progress exposition, Chicago’s world fair. In 1935 St. Olaf’s college of Northfield, Minn., conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters upon Dr. Ristad. Wrote Several Books He was an extensive contributor to the Norwegian press and much in demand as a lecturer. He was the author of numerous books. Among the more prominent of his books of verse are “Fra det ?ny Normandie.” “Kvad,” “The Pioneer,” “Fra det Norski Amerika.,” and “Jubelfestene paa Koshkonong.” He was a member of a committee that compiled the Lutheran Sunday School Hymnal now in general use throughout the United States. He was intensely interested in the development of young people’s activities in his own church and the circuit. He was instrumental in organizing the Sunday School training courses in the circuit. Dr. Ristad was one of Manitowoc’s most active music enthusiasts. He was an office and director of the Civic Music association for a number of years and as a member of the talent committee played no small part in bringing world-famous concert artists to Manitowoc audiences. He was for many years a member of the local Kiwanis club and was a past president of the Manitowoc chapter of the American Red Cross. G. ROLF RISTAD G. Rolf Ristad Fatally Stricken Late Saturday G. Rolf Ristad, 49, president of the East Wisconsin Trustee Company, former member of the Board of Vocational and Adult Education and a civic leader in Manitowoc for many years, died unexpectedly late Saturday afternoon at his home, 718 North Water St. He had been enjoying good health and Saturday morning was at his desk in his office as usual. He was stricken with a coronary attack while seated in a chair in the living room of his home. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church. The Rev. Roland Schwandt officiated and interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. He was born in Chicago May 1, 1905, son of the Rev. and Mrs. D. G. Ristad. He attended schools in that city and in 1923 came to Manitowoc when his father was named pastor of the First Lutheran Church. Returned to Manitowoc. Ristad enrolled at the University of Mississippi from which he was graduated and returned to Manitowoc to enter business life. He was employed by the First National Bank for four years and then became a member of the office staff of the East Wisconsin Trustee Company. He was later elected vice president and in 1945 became president on the death of the late Oscar Alter. He was a partner in the East Wisconsin Insurance agency and assistant secretary and treasurer of the Oriental Milling Company. He was a director of the Manitowoc Savings Bank and the Eggers Plywood and Veneer Company of Two Rivers. Active for years in Boy Scout work, he had been serving on the Executive Board of that organization and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver award. He was a member of the Executive Board of the Shady Lane Home for the Aged. Ristad was named a member of the Vocational School Board in 1938 and renamed to serve additional terms, retiring two years ago. An active member of the Manitowoc Chamber of Commerce, he was a vice president in 1938. He served as President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1934 and in 1942 was honored by that organization for community service. Led in Fund Drives Ristad was a co-chairman of the Community Chest drive in 1941 and headed the Red Cross membership drive in 1946. He served as president of the State Association of Trust Companies in 1941-42 and was a past president of the Wisconsin Fiduciary Association. A past president of the Rotary Club his other affiliations including membership in the First Lutheran Church, the Elks Club and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the Knights of Pythias. In 1930 he married Miss Helen Schuette at Manitowoc. She survives, with two daughters, Karen and Mary; brother, Robert of Palo Alto, Calif.; mother, Mrs. Sarah Ristad of Manitowoc. Dr. Ristad came to Manitowoc to become pastor of First Lutheran Church. He died in 1938. Mrs. Ristad was active in societies of the church and was an Honorary member of Clio Club. DIES AT SHEBOYGAN Former Resident of Manitowoc Dead at Age of 85 Mrs. Augusta Ristow, nee Knack widow of Fred Ristow, Sr., died at home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Koehler at Sheboygan this morning her demise being due to infirmities incident to old age. The body will be brought to this city and the funeral will take place from the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kunish, 1207 South Eleventh street, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Lived at Manitowoc Mrs. Ristow, who was past eighty-five years of age, was born in Germany and was married there, the family coming to America shortly afterward, coming to Manitowoc to make their home. DAISY B. RITCHIE Mrs. Robert A. Ritchie (above) 81, prominent Manitowoc clubwoman for many years, died early Wednesday morning at her home, 407 Park St., Manitowoc, following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, the Rev. Gervase Zanotti of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Ritchie, nee Daisy Bailey, was born in Marquette, Mich., in 1874. She was married to Robert Ritchie in Ashland, Wis., in 1896 and two years later then moved to Chicago where they remained for four years. They came to Manitowoc in 1902? where Mr. Ritchie was in the grain elevator business and president of the old Northern Grain Co. He died in 1914. Mrs. Ritchie, named Manitowoc’s “Mother of the Year” in 1953?, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 50 years and was in the first Deaconess group at the church. She also was a member of the Missionary Society and the Ladies Society of the church. One of Manitowoc’s most active clubwomen, Mrs. Ritchie was a charter member and served as president of the Manitowoc Federation of Women’s Clubs from 1932 to 1936. She was also a past president and honorary member of the Monday Music Club and of the Manitowoc chapter of the Past Presidents Assembly, National Federation of Music Clubs. She was a member of Chapter J. PEO Sisterhood, and held all the offices in that organization. She was active in the old North Side Relief Society and when a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority was organized in Manitowoc in 19_5, she served as its first sponsor. During World War I, Mrs. Ritchie was chairman of the women’s publicity committee for the Liberty Bond drives and during War II rolled bandages for the Red Cross at the Rahr Civic Center. In 1953?? when Mrs. Ritchie was honored as “Mother of the Year,” her pastor, Dr. C. H. Phipps, now pastor ____ of the First Presbyterian Church said. It can be said of Mrs. Ritchie that she always tries to see something good in everyone and tries to bring that quality to the forefront of her thinking. ROBERT A. RITCHIE DEATH CLAIMS ROBERT RITCHIE AT CHICAGO HOSPITAL TODAY WELL KNOWN BUSINESS MAN OF CITY FOLLOWING OPERATION PERFORMED A WEEK AGO. NEWS A SHOCK Uncertainty of human life, the entity of human ambition and the unpitying decree of fate or destiny was brought home to Manitowoc people today in announcement from Chicago of the death in that city of Robert A. Ritchie, president of the Northern Elevator company, and one of the best known business men of the city. Mr. Ritchie’s death occurred at 10 o’clock this morning at the hospital in Chicago where just a week ago he submitted to an operation which, while serious, was not considered to be dangerous. News of the death of Mr. Ritchie was received with profound sorrow in the city and was a great shock to the community. Mr. Ritchie, upon the advice of his physician, entered the hospital ten days ago for an operation for relief from stomach trouble with which he had suffered for several months but which was not thought to be serious. The operation was performed last Saturday and reports from Chicago were encouraging for the patient’s early recovery and restoration to health. Late yesterday, however, messages received announced that Mr. Ritchie’s condition was critical and at 10 o’clock this morning another message announced the death. Mrs. Ritchie, who accompanied her husband to Chicago and had been with him during the time since the operation, was at his bedside when the end came. Charles Zeman, an associate in the Northern Elevator company, was also present and is in charge of the arrangements for bringing the body to this city. The remains will arrive here at 10:35 this evening and will be taken to the home of 727 N. Eighth street. The body will be met at Sheboygan by a delegation from Manitowoc Lodge of Elks of which Mr. Ritchie was an active member. Mr. Ritchie is survived by his widow and four children and the sympathy of the community will go out to them in their bereavement. His mother, the last member of the family, died three years ago. Decedent was a native of Wisconsin having been born at Ashland forty-one years ago. He received his early education in that city and in 1901 came to Manitowoc and was associated with the Northern Grain company in ___ of ___, remaining with the company until the sale of the local elevators in 1907 when he organized the Northern Elevator company, of which he has been the executive head since. Associated with him in the company were Charles Zeman and John Short. The company has offices at N. Eleventh and Buffalo streets. No death, which has occurred in recent years, has caused deeper or more sincere sorrow than that of Mr. Ritchie. He was one of nature’s noblemen and during his residence in the city had surrounded himself with a large circle of friends who will experience a keen sense of personal loss. In the affairs of public as well as his own business matters, he was honest and upright, conscientious in the performance of every act and a good citizen. Mr. Ritchie was progressive in his ideas, keenly alive to the welfare of the city and at all times gave his support to any cause that tended to betterment of the community and its people. Mr. Ritchie was a member of Manitowoc lodge of Elks and was affiliated with other fraternal organizations of the city. He was a man of liberal views, keen business insight and in all relations of life was honored an esteemed by his fellowman. His death causes widespread sorrow in the community. Funeral arrangements have not been made. The body is enroute from Chicago and will arrive here at 10:35 this evening. A delegation of Elks, Exalted Ruler Wededgarten, Theodore Anderson, L.E. Wedertz, E.O. Kelley, F.J. Taugher and Julius Dettman will meet the body at Sheboygan. It is possible that the body may be taken to Ashland for burial after services here tomorrow or Monday. RUTH BAILEY RITCHIE Miss Ruth Bailey Ritchie, 76, of 407 Park St., Manitowoc, died Saturday afternoon in Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Phipps Memorial Chapel, First Presbyterian Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Dale Tutje will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Miss Ritchie was born December 13, 1901 in Chicago, daughter of the late Robert A. and Daisy Bailey Ritchie. She was educated in Manitowoc schools and was graduated from Lawrence University in 1922 with a major in music, teaching music and art in Wautoma, Hurley and Port Washington. She had been secretary to superintendents of Manitowoc Public Schools for 20 years, retiring in 1966. A member of First Presbyterian Church, she also was a former deacon and sang in the church choir. She was a member of Mu Phi National Music Sorority, Manitowoc Retired Teachers Association, Manitowoc Elks Ladies Club and was the accompanist for the Silvertones, the Women's Chorus of Manitowoc Senior Citizens. Survivors include a sister, Miss Frances B. Ritchie of Manitowoc; a brother-in-law, William U. Rutherford of Cleveland; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Ritchie of Menahsa; two nephews, William Rutherford Jr., and William A. Ritchie Jr.; two nieces, Susan Ritchie Ronngren and Sally Rutherford Anderson. A brother, William A. Ritchie and a sister, Jessie Ritchie preceded her in death. Friends may call in Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, 5 o'clock to 9 o'clock this Monday afternoon and in the chapel from noon Tuesday until the time of service. J. ROACHE ED. ROCHE (sic), a deckhand on the Muskegon, while attempting to shake hands with a man at the Goodrich dock on Monday afternoon, fell into the river and was drowned. He did not rise after sinking and it is thought he seized a pile under water and clung to it until drowned. The man was intoxicated. He was about 40 years old and was in the Goodrich employment for a number of years. His body was recovered a short while after the accident occurred.
