ALICE ARNOLD ROBINSON (d. 1875) OBITUARY. On the afternoon of Tuesday the___ ult. Deceased, Alice Arnold Robinson, second daughter of John Robinson Esq., of the town of Kossuth, aged 20 years. Deceased was a native of this county, (her respected father having resided in Kossuth for twenty-seven years) and was highly esteemed for her amiability and kindness of heart, and was in the household a ministering angel of harmony and good nature. The death of this young lady is a severe shock to the members of her family, and a sad loss to her large circle of friends. But if any balm of consolation can be applied to the wrenched and bleeding heart on such an occasion, the tender of such comfort was made by the manifestations of sympathy and respect evinced by the large concourse of friends and neighbors who attended the burial of the deceased. Deceased was buried at the Manitowoc City Cemetery and the train of mourners was one of the largest ever seen in this county. May He who administers the burdens and sorrows of life, in His wisdom, upon us all, lighten this heavy affliction and teach us all with patience to submit to the inevitable. ELIZABETH R. ROBINSON (d. 1935) MISS ROBINSON DIES; RITES TO BE SATURDAY Daughter of First Druggist, Prominent As a Church Worker, Was 70 Miss Elizabeth Robinson, 70, whose father established the first drug store in Manitowoc and who was a lifelong resident of the city, died early today at The Home, New York avenue. Death was due to an attack of pneumonia, which she suffered less than a week ago. Miss Robinson moved to The Home from her residence, 309 North Seventh street, two years ago. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the St. James Episcopal church, of which congregation the deceased has been a member for years. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. The deceased was born in this city in 1864, the only daughter of Thomas and Emma Robinson. Her father’s drug store was located at York and North Eighth street, now the Hinrich’s drug store. Her grandfather, William Phipps, was an early day contractor, erecting the first public schools here. Attended Altar Miss Robinson attended the north side schools and later enrolled at Kemper Hall, Kenosha, to complete her education. Her father died when she was a young girl and she returned from Kenosha to make her home with her mother in the Robinson homestead on North Seventh street. Following the death of Mrs. Robinson the deceased devoted her time to church work. For nearly 20 years she attended the altar of the St. James Episcopal church. The Robinson home here has many furnishings of the Victorian period kept intact by Miss Robinson. They were the prized possessions of her parents or were brought from England by her grandparents. There are many lamps from the old “kerosene age,” some with brass stands and others of china or pottery which were later converted into stands for electric illumination. The old designs, however, were retained. An Old Piano A square rosewood piano has as a covering a large shawl brought over from England by Miss Robinson’s grandmother. In a china stand in the dining room is an English tea set more than 100 years old. In her declining years Miss Robinson was visited by a large number of friends and acquaintances who enjoyed her stories of early day life in Manitowoc and were privileged to view the many heirlooms of the Robinson family. Survivors are five cousins. They are F. I. Richardson, Appleton, William Mead Richardson, Kaukauna, George Richardson, Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Edgerton, Spokane, Wash., and Miss Emma Robinson, Kenosha. The body is at the Frazier mortuary and will be removed to the St. James church Saturday morning. Manitowoc Herald Times, March 1, 1935 P. 2 ********* Miss Robinson The history of Manitowoc and the life of Miss Elizabeth Robinson were closely linked. Her death ends a long career of usefulness to her community. It exemplifies the passing of an era. Not so many of the older generation, so closely associated with early life in Manitowoc, remain with us to tell of Manitowoc’s beginnings. Miss Robinson’s father, Thomas Robinson, established the first drug store in Manitowoc. Her grandfather, William Phipps, was one of the first contractors and erected the first public schools here. What rare memories this kindly old woman carried with her to the end. Most of her life was spent in the old homestead on North Seventh street with its beautiful furnishings of the Victorian period. There was charm and beauty in her home and she expressed herself with the same measure of serenity and peace until the end. Hundreds of Episcopalians knew her. For 20 years she attended the altar of St. James Episcopal church and in other ways she devoted much time to her church. There was a steadiness and longevity to all of her undertakings which marked a great character quietly going its way amid old and familiar surroundings. Robinson, 82, retired waterworks superintendent and sewer contractor, fell to his death from his seventh floor apartment in the Hotel Manitowoc early this morning. Mr. Robinson had been in failing health for several months and a lung congestion made it difficult for him to breathe. His body was discovered by Ralph Wiegand, of the Wisconsin Lunch, who was driving north on Eighth street, shortly after 5:30 a.m. He felt Mr. Robinson’s pulse, and then hurried into the hotel lobby to summon officers. MRS. (JANE) ROBINSON Capt. Robert J. Robinson who is well known in this vicinity, arrived in town last Monday with the remains of his mother Mrs. Christopher Robinson who died at her residence in the town of Eaton on the 9th inst. The funeral took place on Tuesday last, from the Windiate House. In regard to Mrs. Robinson the Chilton Times says: "Mrs. Robinson, widow of Christopher Robinson, Esq., formerly of Athlone, Ireland, died at her residence in the town of Eaton, Manitowoc county (six miles from Chilton), on Tuesday of this week. She was one of the most estimable Irish ladies it has been our good fortune to meet upon American soil. The Robinson family throughout central Ireland, at one time, obtained considerable notoriety for their genuine Irish hospitality and liberality, and in the King's county and the county of Westmeath they were considered second to none. The world, however, is but a fleeting show and "riches have wings." Misfortune came upon this branch of the family and they emigrated to the "Wilds of Wisconsin" about 20 years ago. Here they had to endure the sufferings incident to pioneer life, but, notwithstanding their struggles against fate, the old couple always sustained the dignity, self respect and the hospitality so becoming the intelligent natives of the Green Isle. A few years ago we announced the death of Mr. Robinson and, now, while we drop a tear to her memory, we believe that "He who doeth all things well" called her at the proper moment to join in the better world the partner of her joys and sorrows. Peace to her ashes." Robinson, died on Monday morning about 1 o'clock. Death was sudden, not much more than an hour. (long article) Der Nord Westen, 23 Nov. 1876 ********* On Monday last, sad news, sudden as a thunderbolt, cast a mournful gloom over the city of Manitowoc, which made a deep impression upon men, women and children, of all ages and conditions, giving solemn notice to us all, that brittle is the thread of life, and that the lease we have of it, is of exceedingly uncertain duration. It was the startling announcement that the Hon. Thomas Robinson, of Manitowoc (better known as "Tom Robinson") was dead - a solemn fact that could hardly be realized - which alas! has proven too true. The deceased (or, as we prefer to call him, our old friend "Tom") has lived among us for twenty-one years, known by almost every man, woman and child in the city, and was of such marked character that it entitles his memory to more than a passing notice. He was born in church Stretton, in Shropshire, England, on the 6th day of January, 1829, and was in his forty-eighth year. He received a good business education, and in 1852 left Old England to try his fortune in America. He arrived at Kenosha, Wis., about Christmas of that year, and was engaged as a clerk in the drug store of his uncle, Hon. Frederick Robinson, of that city. In November 1854 he came to Manitowoc, then but a small hamlet, bought and took possession of the small drug store then run by Mr. Deming. In 1857 his only brother, John left England and came straight to Manitowoc, and immediately entered into partnership with his senior brother, under the firm name of T. & J. Robinson, which partnership continued to grow, thrive and prosper from the day of its birth to the present time, and from small beginnings, by industry, honor and integrity, the firm built up one of the largest drug business in the state of Wisconsin. In the fall of 1859 the lamented deceased married a daughter of Mr. Phipps, an esteemed citizen of Manitowoc, by whom he had a daughter now about 14 years of age. In 1847 the enlargement of business required John to move to Green Bay, where the firm had purchased and taken possession of a large business, leaving the longest and best known partner here with us, where he remained until the hour of his death, which took place about one o'clock on Monday morning. As is known to every one who knew him, deceased was of remarkably robust constitution and frame, and never looked better or more cheerful than the day before he died. He retired to bed late (about twelve), complained of some pain in his side, nothing unusual; he had been in bed not more than twenty minutes when his wife was awakened by a gurgling noise in his throat, and taking the symptom for the night-mare, she tried to arouse him but could not; she obtained a light, called for help, but her beloved husband neither knew her nor anything else. Medical aid was immediately summoned, but when the physician arrived, the lamp of life had gone out, and the head of the household was no more, leaving not only the stricken inmates of the house in sorrow and mourning but everyone else who knew him, and their name is legion. And well they may, for with all his faults, (he had some, who has not?) he was the best friend of the poor this city could boast of; not demonstrative in his charities, but as is known to many keeping the left hand ignorant of what the right hand was doing; and it may be safely said that no child in this whole city ever went to bed hungry, with his knowledge. We would rather have the blessings and benedictions that are to-day showered upon his memory, for our earthly crown, than the largest marble shaft that ever pierced the clouds. We fear that when Christmas comes round that many, very many scanty boards will be much leaner and scantier in the absence of the lamented tender and large hearted "Tom;" and if feeding the hungry, clothing the naked remembering the widows and orphans, caring and providing for the destitute does procure a key to the celestial city; the much mourned departed carries it with him to the eternal world. Deceased was an ardent if not enthusiastic mason, and, as we are informed, did more for the advancement of this order than any member in Manitowoc. He was made Master Mason in 1857, past through numerous degrees and became a member of the Manitowoc Chapter in 1859, and at his death was the highest officer in the Chapter which shows the esteem he was held in by his brethern. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows lodge in Manitowoc, and has belonged to the Manitowoc Fire Department, either as an active or honorary member (and one of the most efficient of its members), ever since its advent to Manitowoc. In 1867 he was elected Assemblyman for the Manitowoc district, and served one term, and while in Madison made many friends. He was several times elected Coroner of the county, and nearly every body voted for him. That he was a public spirited citizen is well attested by the part he took in all general improvements especially in school matters; and the beautiful 1st District school house, which is the chief ornament of the city, was labored for long by him, and finally built while he was a member of the district school board. And many a time we have heard him rejoice in having had a part in the erection of such a noble structure, remarking that it would be remembered after he was dead that he had something to do with it. He was a staunch, steady, true and reliable friend, the same yesterday, to-day and tomorrow; and if a man obtained a place in his heart once, he staid there forever. He could also hate for a few days if he was wronged or abused, but let his adversary step an inch towards reconciliation and he would jump a foot, for nothing gave him so much pain as being at enmity with his neighbors. Every impulse of his nature was good will to man. Socially, he had few peers among us, fond of a song, delighted with a story, and never tired of pun, fun or repartee. Among his circle of acquaintances his place cannot be filled. With such characteristics, what need be said of him as a husband and father? That he was a kind and affectionate husband, everybody knows; that his whole soul was wrapped up in his daughter, whom he loved with such a warmth of affection as is vouchsafe to but few, is well known to his friends. Would that we could pour a little of the oil of consolation into this cup of bitterness and sorrow. If tears of sympathy can alleviate the woe they flow throughout the community. If universal testimonials of respect to the memory of the departed husband and father can lighten the burden of their sorrow, they are to be seen and heard abundantly. In closing this somewhat lengthy notice, we tender our heartfelt sympathies, not only to the mother, daughter and family relations of the deceased upon whom this blow has fallen so heavily, but we condole with the entire public in the loss all have sustained in the death of our much beloved old friend. May the Great Dispenser of love and mercy lighten the burdens of sorrow and woe, and enable all to bear them with fortitude. The following two verses, with the substitution of a single word might have been written for this occasion: O, Robinson! the man, the brother; And art thou gone, and gone forever: And best thou cross that unknown river Life's dreary bound? Like thee where shall I find another The world around? Go to your sculptur'd tombs, ye great. In all the tinsel trash o'state; But by the honest turf I'll wait Thou man of worth! And weep these best fellows fate, E'er lay in earth. Chilton Times, November 25, 1876

MARY ROEDIG (d. 1947) WOMAN’S SLAIN; FIND MAN’S BODY Double Death Result of Spat Mrs. Mary Raedig (sic) Beaten With Shaker; Roomer Takes His Life Letters in Home Indicate Adolph Brachman Had Plotted Murder and Intended to Kill Himself The body of Adolph Brachman, 62, who left two letters threatening suicide near the battered body of his landlady and close friend, Mrs. Mary Raedig, 64, in her home at 911 South Tenth street Tuesday evening, was found floating in the Manitowoc river at 1:15 this afternoon. The letters, addressed to his own son, Ralph, of this city, and to Richard Raedig, son of the slain woman indicated to police that the pair had quarreled and contained statements by Brachman to the effect that he would take his own life. The body was noticed floating in the river about 100 feet east of the Eighth street bridge by D. L. MacLennan and Louis Reime aboard a tug of the McMullen and Pitz Construction company. They summoned Police Office Milton Larson who was crossing the bridge. The body was secured to a line off the tug and brought to the foot of South Ninth street where Captain of Detectives Frank Tomchek, Detective Elmer Scherer, District Attorney Fred G. Dicke and Coroner Theodore Teitgen, all of whom had worked on the case during the morning hours, viewed the body and identified it as Brachman. Mrs. Raedig, victim in the murder- suicide was a dishwasher in a Manitowoc restaurant. Find Two Letters Two letters dated Sept. 2 and signed by Adolph Brachman, who rented a room in the slain woman’s house, were found on a table a short distance from the body by Detective Captain Frank Tomchek and Police Lt. William Herman who discovered the badly battered corpse on the floor in the living room after they had forced their way into the small first floor apartment this morning In one of the letters, addressed to his son, Ralph, of this city, Brachman, divorced from his wife for a number of years, said: “I can’t stand this any longer…She was good to me but has turned me out now… I am giving up this world and am going where we will all go someday ..I can’t write any more now but you can guess how I feel…I thought so much of her.” Someone Else Mixed In In the second letter, addressed to Richard Raedig (sic) of this city, a son of the victim, Brachman wrote: “I lived in the house for two years and she treated me good and we got along good… Recently someone else mixed in and she is no more the same dear Mary…She stepped out after all I did for her…I am giving up and going where we all go some day…I hope to meet her there.” On the strength of the letters, Chief of Police James Kuplic and District Attorney Fred G. Dicke said Brachman had taken his own life—after writing the notes. Dicke said that he had questioned Brachman’s former wife who lives here but was told she had not seen him for some time. Heard Dog Howling Police were first called into the case this morning when William Duffy, a neighbor of Mrs. Raedig’s, called the station with the information that he and his wife were sitting on their front porch Tuesday evening when they noticed the woman, a dish- washer at the Midget café on Franklin street, come home alone. Shortly afterward, Duffy said, they heard three faint calls for help from inside the house. They did not investigate, however, but a dog that kept up a continual barking throughout the night prompted him to summon police this morning. When Detective Tomchek and Lt. Herman arrived at the small house at eight o’clock they found all of the doors locked and gained entry through a back window. In the front living room, Tomchek said, they found the blood-covered body of the woman, a deep gash in her skull, lying on the floor along the wall which was splattered with blood. (snip) No Evidence of Fight While there is little evidence of a struggle in the small front room, police theorize that Brachman and Mrs. Raedig entered into an argument after she returned to the house early last evening. Tomchek said that he apparently wrote the two letters threatening suicide following the bludgeoning of the woman. Dr. Teitgen said that the woman, whose husband, Charles Raedig, died about nine years ago, had been a patient of his. She was the mother of a large family and had moved into the South Tenth street house about two years ago. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Raedig had not been made by press time this afternoon. She was born Mary Kieselhorst in the town of Liberty about 64 years ago. She is survived by five sons, Charles, Herman, Joseph, Richard and Adolph A. Raedig, all of Manitowoc, and a brother, Louis Kieselhorst of Manitowoc. Brachman was employed as a joiner-carpenter at the Burger Boat company at various periods between 1944 and the present time. Previous to that he had been employed at the Manitowoc Ship Building company… Manitowoc Herald Times, September 3, 1947 P. 1 ******** Police Chief Calls Double Tragedy Murder, Suicide (snip/mostly repeat from original story) Private funeral services both at the Pfeffer funeral home, were arranged yesterday for the two victims. Rites for Mrs. Mary Roedig, 63, were held this afternoon at the funeral home, the Rev. Paul Blaufuss officiating. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
