PHILIP ROTH PIONEER LAKE ENGINEER ON A LAST VOYAGE “Phil” Roth, Veteran of Goodrich Line, Died Early Today Philip Roth, pioneer engineer of the lakes and one of the veterans of the Goodrich line, has sailed upon his last voyage and with Death as captain of the craft, entered upon the unknown river early today. Mr. Roth passed away at his home, 414 North Eighth street this morning after an illness that had confined him during the winter. Death was due to a complication of diseases from which he had suffered for years. IN SERVICE SINCE 1862 With the passing of Mr. Roth one of the oldest employes of the Goodrich company departs, he having been identified with the sailing of the Goodrich fleet since 1862 when he first entered the service of the company in that year, being in the engineering department in the shops here. In 1865 he secured papers as a second and sailed in the Orion and Sheboygan and in 1870 he became a chief in the line, being in charge of the steamer Sheboygan. He had been with the company practic- ally all the time during fifty-four years. CABIN BOY AT 16 Mr. Roth was born at Frankfort on the Main October 3, 1845 and came to America as a lad of six, the family locating in New York and later removing to Milwaukee where Mr. Roth was educated. At the age of sixteen Mr. Roth decided upon a lake career and sailed as a cabin boy on the steamer Traveler and from that time until he retired a few years ago, he followed the lakes. In 1877 Mr. Roth purchased the side wheel steamer Isabelle at Oshkosh and headed an expedition that started for the Yazoo river in search of fortune but the enterprise was abandoned at St. Louis and Mr. Roth returned here, and later received an appointment as chief engineer of the Goodrich steamer Chicago. FORTY DAYS IN ICE In 1881 Mr. Roth brought out the new steamer Milwaukee and sailed as chief of the boat for five years for the Grand Haven line and while in charge on a winter boat of the line, the Michigan, was caught in the ice on the lake and for forty days, with his crew, was a prisoner. When the ice broke up the Michigan sank but the crew escaped, walking twenty-five miles over the ice. In 1886 Mr. Roth returned to the Goodrich company as chief of the Chicago, and in 1890 was sent to Cleveland to bring out the new steamer Atlanta which he sailed until the Virginia was completed and he was assigned as chief of the Goodrich floating palace, retaining the post up to a few years ago when he retired. UNIVERSALLY POPULAR Few men in the city were better known or more universally liked than was “Phil” Roth. He was possessed of a genial nature, was broad minded and a man who won friends and retained them. He was a member of the Marine Engineers Beneficial association and was a delegate to the national convention in 1896 at Washington. One of the early members of Chickerming lodge 55, I.O.O.F., Mr. Roth had always taken an active interest in the organization and he was one of the staunch supporters of the plan of the lodge to acquire its own home, resulting in the recent purchase of the Teitgen block. Mr. Roth was also a member of the United Workmen. Mr. Roth is survived by his wife, nee Sarah Bibble, of Racine, whom he married twelve years ago, and by one daughter Adeline. MINNA ROXIEN DEATH ENDS HER SUFFERING. Mrs. Joachim Roxien Dies after Undergoing an Operation. Mrs. Joachim Roxien an old and highly respected resident of this city died at her home, 1401 South Main street last night. A surgical operation, or the nervous shock produced thereby, was the direct cause of her death, though she suffered for more than twenty years and the operation, though considered desperate, was resorted to as an only hope of prolonging her life. It was a chance between life and death and as such was taken. The operation was for the removal of foreign growth in the gall glands. The deceased was 55 years of age and leaves a husband and three children. Though sorely afflicted though years of suffering, she bore her trials with true womanly patience and resignation, and those who knew her best can testify to her unselfish considerate nature. To the bereaved husband and children the sympathy of the community will be exteneded. The funeral will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock Sunday after noon. DANIEL J. ROZUM WITNESS IN COURT CASE IS MISSING Police Asked to Aid in Tracing Dan Rozum, Aged 28 Dan Rozum, 28, wanted as a witness in a civil damage case on trial in circuit court in which the Lochrs of Fond du Lac are the plaintiffs and the Crockers defendants, is missing from home. Every effort to locate the man has failed and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Rozum, South Twenty-sixth street, are at a loss to explain the man's failure to return home. Rozum attended a dance at the Terrace Gardens Saturday night and started for home shortly after midnight. He never arrived home and seems to have been swallowed up by the earth as no trace can be found of the man after he left the dance hall. Family is Worried Rozum is said to have been willing to take the stand as a witness in the case and had been subpoenaed. Rozum is six feet tall, weighs 167 pounds and is capable of taking care of himself under all ordinary circumstances. Fear is expressed he may have met with foul play on his way home. The damage case in court is not expected to be completed until tomorrow morning. The defense began its testimony this morning and at noon three witnesses had been sworn. It is expected the case will reach the jury some time tomorrow morning. Manitowoc Herald News Tuesday, February 9, 1926 pg. 2 ******************** NO TRACE IS FOUND TODAY OF DAN ROZUM Dan Rozum, reported missing to the police Sunday and for who search is being made, had not been located today and no trace of the missing man has been found. Relatives expressed fear that Rozum has met with foul play or has been spirited from the city but nothing to base this upon has been learned by the police, aside from the fact that he was summoned as a witness in a civil damage case in court. Rozum is 28 and six feet tall. A description of the missing man has been furnished all departments of the state in connection with the search being made. Manitowoc Herald News Wednesday, February 10, 1926 pg. 2 ********************* Brother Here To Aid In Search Edward Rozum, a brother of Dan Rozum who has been missing for a week, arrived in the city this morning from Pine City, Minn. To assist in the search for the missing man. With his father he started out this morning to trace several slight clues which have been received but up until 2 o'clock this afternoon no progress to solving the mystery of the disappearance had been made. Manitowoc Herald News Saturday, February 13, 1926 pg. 2 ********************** Have You Seen This Man Within The Past Few Days? With nearly a week passed since his disappearance no trace has been found of Daniel Rozum, 28, who dropped from sight after leaving the Terrace Gardens where he had attended a dance early Sunday morning. Relatives are much alarmed in fear that the missing man has met with an accident or foul play and with the aid of the police a nation wide search has been instituted. Mr. Rozum, whose photo appears above, is 6 feet tall, weight about 165 pounds, light complexion, gray eyes and at the time of his disappearance wore a black suit, with light white stripes, black shoes and had a wrist watch. Any information concerning the missing man should be communicated to J. A. Rozum, 416 South 26th street, Manitowoc or to the police department. Manitowoc Herald News Saturday, February 13, 1926 pg. 6 ************************ NO TRACE OF ROZUM, MISSING EIGHT DAYS A report that Dan Rozum had been seen at Valders a week ago today with two other men was made to the police station yesterday. The three men walked into a saloon at that village last Monday afternoon and remained for only a few minutes. One of the men, according to the report made, answered the description of the missing man but no further trace of the trio has been found. It is possible a mistake was made in the identification as the one making the report was not acquainted with Rozum. Up until noon today there had been no new developments in the search and cards were mailed today to all police departments in the state and to outside points enlisting aid in the search for Rozum who has been missing for eight days now. Manitowoc Herald News Monday, February 15, 1926 pg. 2 ************************** ROZUM MAY BE IN LUMBER CAMP NEAR PELICAN Is Dan Rozum at a lumber camp near Pelican Lake? That is the question which will be answered sometime late this afternoon and which may solve the mystery of the disappearance of the local man more than a week ago. Mrs. Matt Porteu, who arrived here today with her little son for a visit with relatives, says a man who answers the description of Rozum asked for something to eat at her home last Friday. She fed him and he also visited the home of a neighbor and a restaurant. Later the man is said to have gone to a lumber camp about eight miles from Pelican Lake seeking work. The man, who tallies with the description of Rozum, told of having been compelled to leave a place near Racine as result of getting into trouble with a girl and claimed to be “flat broke.” Rozum worked at Kenosha shortly before he disappeared from this city and an investigation will be made at Pelican to determine whether it is the Manitowoc man who is at the lumber camp. Manitowoc Herald News Tuesday, February 16, 1926 pg. 9 ************************** ROZUM BODY FOUND IN RIVER TODAY MISSING MAN MET DEATH IN FALL OFF DOCK No Marks and Rumor of Mystery in Death Unfounded Missing since the night of February 5, when he failed to return home from attending a dance at the opera house the body of Daniel Rozum, 28, was taken from the river this morning when it was discovered by Charles McMullen while at work for the A. H. Pitz company. The body was sighted floating east of the Boiler Works plant on the south side of the river and was recovered by the police who took charge of it. Rozum, a son of J. A. Rozum, was identified by a wrist watch he wore and a letter found in the pocked completed the identification. The body was badly decomposed and the clothing covered with mud. It is believed that Rozum walked off the docks probably at Ninth street and the body was carried out to the harbor by the current. No marks were found on the body and the death is believed to have been accidental, due to confusion of the man in direction after he left the dance hall shortly after midnight on the night of his disappearance. Rumors of Foul Play At time of Rozum's disappearance relatives were inclined to believe that he had met with foul play or been spirited away from the city. He had been summoned as a witness in a damage suit in circuit court to be called the next week but investigation failed to reveal any reason for his absence. A nation wide search was instituted for the man whose photograph was sent broadcast by the police and several reports that Rozum or a man answering his description had been seen in various localities in and out of the state were found to be untrue when followed up. J. A. Rozum, father of the dead man, assisted in identification of the body when it was found today. He had reported the disappearance to the police February 7 when his son failed to return home after leaving the night of February 5. It was established that Rozum attended the dance and started for home shortly after midnight and that he was apparently in good health and had not been drinking. Rozum, 28 years old, was six feet tall and weighed about 175 pounds, is a son of J. A. Rozum and had resided here for six years. He was born in Gibson, August 20, 1898 and later lived at Miladore, this state and at Pine City, Minn. Before coming here. He was employed as an automobile mechanic at the George Sladky garage and for some time was an inspector in the Ajax plant at Racine. Besides his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Rozum, Sr., 26th street, he is survived by one brother Edward at Pine City, Minn., and a sister Mrs. Anton Carus of Styrene, N. D. No Inquest To Be Held It was decided this afternoon that no inquest would be held. Relatives of Rozum asked an inquiry but after examination of the body the district attorney and coroner said none was necessary. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9 from St. Paul's Catholic church. Manitowoc Herald News Wednesday, April 14, 1926 pg. 2
