EVERGREEN CEMETERY OBITUARIES [ SCHE ]

DOUGLAS F. SCHEFF Left by Wife, Man Kills Self Douglas Scheff, 28, of 3106 Peto St., Custerdale, who police said was despondent since his wife left him two weeks ago, ended his life early Saturday evening with a shot gun blast through his head. When the officers answered a call from Scheff’s step-father, Lester Lambries Sr., at 9:30 p.m.. they found Scheff seated on the lavatory bowl, with a single barrel shot gun across his knees. He had placed the muzzle in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, who was summoned, termed the death a suicide. Three friends, who had called on Scheff earlier Saturday evening, told the police that Scheff appeared despondent since his wife left him. Mrs. Scheff, who went to Missouri, was being contacted Monday and advised of her husband’s death and burial plans. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pfeffer Funeral Home. The Rev. Dennis Bouche will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Schaff was born at Athens, Wis., in 1926 and came to this city at an early age with his parents. He served in both the Navy and the Army. He was in the Navy from February, 1944, to June, 1946, and was in Korea with the Army from November, 1948, to January, 1953. In 1952 he married Miss Agnes Wade. He had been employed by the Invincible Metal Furniture Company. Surviving are his wife; stepfather, Lester Lambries Sr., of Manitowoc; sister, Mrs. Marvin Dorst? of Madison; two step-brothers, Lester Lambries Jr., and Russel Lambries of Manitowoc. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Monday. Manitowoc Herald Times, August 16, 1954 P.2

JOHN SCHEFFLER FEAR MISSING MAN MAY BE IN RIVER LEAVES NOTE, DISAPPEARS, HE MAY BE SUICIDE J. Scheffler, Crossing Watchman For N.W. Road, Worried Over His Health Is Report "Please excuse me. Don't look for me. I have been a lunatic all my life. Am now sick of living." This note, left in his room when he disappeared from the home of his brother- in-law Henry Guehlsdorf, 632 So. Twenty-sixth street, leads relatives to believe that John Schaeffler (sic), 61, may have ended his own life in a fit of temporary insanity. Schaeffler has been missing since Saturday night and police who have conducted a search have been unable to secure any trace of him. Schaeffler, crippled by the loss of one arm in early life, has been employed as a crossing gateman at Sixteenth and Franklin streets for the Northwestern, working from 6 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon. He returned as usual Saturday night and is known to have been in his room at 10 o'clock that night. Sunday morning he failed to appear at his usual work and it was found that he was not at home. The note furnished the only clew to his disappearance. Worried About Health Worry over condition of his health is believed by relatives to have unbalanced Schaeffler's mind. He visited a physician Friday and was found to have extremely high blood pressure and weak pulse and was apprehensive. The family believes that Schaeffler may have ended his life in the river, suggesting that he may have leaped from the Twenty-first street bridge but police have not attempted to drag the river because of not knowing where to start. Search about the high bridge and river was conducted yesterday as the man is said to have spent some of his spare time about that vicinity. No Financial Worries Schaeffler was a single man and had no financial worries, having been a man of thrifty habits and said to have saved some money. He had been employed by the Northwestern for ten years. The search was being continued today. The missing man is 5 feet 6 inches, 160 pounds, and has an arm hook for his right hand which he lost. Manitowoc Herald News, Monday, September 9, 1929 P.2 ********* EXTRA! OFFER REWARD IN SEARCH FOR MISSING MAN A reward of $200 was today offered for the finding of John Scheffler, missing. C. and N.W. flagman or the recovery of his body if the man is dead. Relatives advertised the reward in the Herald-News to stimulate search for the man. Scheffler disappeared from the home of Henry Guehlsdorf, brother-in-law, where he made his home Saturday night or early Sunday morning. No trace of the man has been found. Mr. Guehlsdorf posted the reward. Manitowoc Herald News, Wednesday, September 11, 1929 P.1 ********* FIND BODY HANGING IN TALL TREE SCHEFFLER MYSTERY IS SOLVED TODAY Eugene Knipp, 16, Finds Body of Missing N.W. Flagman Hanging to Tree on Asylum Farm Climbing to almost the topmost limb of a tall pine tree in the clump of woods on the old Klingholz farm, now county asylum property, a quarter of a mile west of the city on the Middle road, Calumet yards, John Scheffler, 61, ended his life by hanging. Missing since September 7, when he left the home of his brother-in-law, Henry Guelhsdorf, 632 South Twenty-sixth street, with whom he made his home while employed as Northwestern crossing gateman, at Franklin and Sixteenth streets, Scheffler was discovered this morning at six o'clock by Eugene Knipp, 16, residing at 913 South 24th street and Anton Rysticken, 40, 902 South 24th street, who accompanied him on the trip. So high up in the tall tree did Scheffler climb to make way with himself that it required the services of Officers Healy and Diegel, together with Fire Chief Kuplic and a crew of men from the fire department to cut down the body and lower it to the ground. To Hold No Inquest Coroner Kemper was notified but decided that no inquest would be necessary. The remains were removed to the Shimek and Schwartz parlors. It required over an hour to lower the body from the tree. It was at a spot within a stone's throw of an oft traveled lane off a side road, where scores of county aslyum workers passed daily to and from their labors in the fields to the west of the small grove of trees. Knipp, who will claim the $200 reward offered by Scheffler's relatives for discovery of the body, passed the same spot last Sunday, on a trip through the woods on a nut picking expedition. He said that he noticed a man in the tree but thought that it was some one climbing about in the tree and paid little attention to the incident. Later in the week he began to think it over and told of what he had seen last evening to Anton Rysticken, residing a few doors from the Knipp home on Twenty-fourth street. Bright and early this morning they set out for the scene and soon located the body. It was fully forty feet from the ground. Scheffler, although crippled by the loss of his right hand, had in some manner been able to climb into the tree, fasten one end of a stout rope to one of the upper branches and then release his legs from the branch and end his life. Notify the Police Kipp and Rysticken returned to the city shortly after six o'clock and notified the police department of their find. Officers Healy and Diegel went at once to the scene, but saw that more help would be needed. Chief Kuplic and members of the department, with a long extension ladder, went out and after over an hour's work in which several limbs had to be cut away so that the body could be lowered, succeeded in getting it to the ground. Henry Guehlsdorf, a brother-in-law, was also at the scene while the workers labored to get the body down from its high perch in the pine tree. The finding of Scheffler's body ends a search that has been under way ever since he disappeared six weeks ago. At that time he left a note in his room, which gave an inkling of his intentions to end his life. It asked that searchers were not to look for him and that he was "sick of living." From the note it was evident that Scheffler picked this unusual spot and method to end his life, probably figuring that searchers would not find the body if he sought a tall tree. Explodes "Medium's" Theory Scheffler made his home at the Guehlsdorf home for the past twelve years ever since he was employed as a Northwestern crossing gateman. He worked from six in the morning until two in the afternoon, and disappeared on a Saturday afternoon. The aid of a Milwaukee medium, A.P. Roberts, was sought by his relatives and the latter insisted that the body would be found in the Manitowoc river, even pointing out the exact spot where the remains could be located. But although the river was dragged by the police and others for many days, of course no trace was found of him. Later a report came from Two Rivers that a "one armed man" had been terrorizing residents on the east side there, and relatives of Scheffler turned in that direction in hopes that the man might be the missing gateman. But the reports proved groundless. Worried Over Health It is believed that Scheffler decided to end his life following a visit he made to a local physician who told him that he had high blood pressure and a week pulse. He was a single man, had no financial worries; was thrifty, and was said to have saved some money. He lost his right hand in an accident in early life and wore a black glove over the stub member. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Henry Guehlsdorf, 632 South 26th street, with whom he made his home, and Mrs. Wm. Ernst of Milwaukee, and four brothers, Robert of Newton, and Albert, August and William of the town of Centerville. Funeral Services Saturday The remains will remain at the Shimek and Schwartz chapel and funeral services will be held from that place Saturday afternoon at two o'clock. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. Manitowoc Herald News, Friday, October 18, 1929 P.2 ******** [bur. 10-19-1929/age 60 yrs/cause: suicide by hanging]

Then the sun will go down as the world takes its turn, And it will not shine as bright 'till the day you return Then all that will remain is your footprints in the snow. Which in time will start to fade and even they will go. But my memories of you could never fade away, for each time you leave I will miss you every day. Because you mean so much You're the one I hold true And you'll be with me always For my heart belongs to you. The Pfeffer Funeral Home and Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Caryn will be missed dearly by everyone whose lives she touched. He has always been an honest, upright and industrious man and held the respect and esteems of a large circle of friends. He was an active member of the United Workmen and carried $2,000 insurance in that order. The breaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in this, the dark hour, of their affliction. Manitowoc Daily Herald, November 7, 1898 P. 4 ******** Simon Scheinoha, while engaged with others in the employ of the Chicago and Northwestern Comapny, tearing down a so-called coal shed, was injured last fall, and died from the effects of the injuries, on November 19, 1898. Thereafter, the widow made application for administration in the county court of Manitowoc County, through Henry J. Gerpheide as attorney, and Mr. Wm. Rathsack was appointed administrator, the object being to commence suit against the railroad company for causing the death. Mr. Gerpheide has since then looked carefully into the matter and the law bearing on the case, and he has come to the conclusion that the company is not liable. He succeeded in securing an offer from the company of a certain sum as sympathy to the family but they refused to accept. Mr. Gerpheide is of the opinion that the plaintiff could not recover any damages and personally has dropped the case. ANDREAS SCHERBERGER Should Be Investigated Andreas Sherberger(sic) died in this city last Wednesday afternoon and the physician on attendance is suspicious of poisoning. It seems that the deceased was the third husband of the present Mrs. Sherberger and her second husband died only a few months ago, he having precisely the same symptoms as those in this case of the man just gone. About the first of July, a daughter who had some money was taken with the complaint and after a weeks' illness, died, although the physician was sure she would recover and the mother claimed she would die. Although called in time to aid the daughter, Dr. Luhman informs us that he was not called to attend either of the men until they were beyond help. When called for Mr. Sherberger, he hurried to the house, but he (Sherberger) had ceased to breathe, but the muscles were still twitching, showing that he had just expired and as the Dr. stated, the twitching of the muscles would indicate poison. The Dr. drove to the asylum on the hill and returned in about fifteen minutes and as he passed the house, he saw the undertaker was at the house, so that he must have been called before the man was dead. The embalming mixture having been forced into the stomach would destroy all chances of tracing poison, if any. As two husbands and one daughter have died in so short a time, each having exactly the same symptoms, it is not unreasonable to say it is a remarkable case and the interests of the family, as well as the community, demand a thorough investigation. The bodies of the last husband and the girl were embalmed, but that of the second husband was not, therefore, as there is suspicion in the air, it is but just that the body of the latter be exhumed and the contents of the stomach examined. It would seem to justify to all required that something of this kind be done to clear a family who if not guilty, cannot afford to have such a terrible suspicion held over them, if on the other hand there be foul play, justice should be dealt accordingly. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, July 31, 1888 page 5 ******** ANDREAS SHERBERGER (sic) of this city died quite suddenly on Wednesday morning. He was married only three months ago and the suddenness of his death led to the holding of an inquest. LATER.—When arrangements were made for a post mortem examination Sherberger came to life again and put a stop to further proceedings. LATER—He died again quite suddenly in the afternoon. There were suspicions of poisoning and his stomach was taken out when it was found to have been filled with embalming fluids after his death. This will probably prevent an analysis being made, but it will certainly prevent him from coming to life a second time. Manitowoc Pilot, July 26, 1888 P. 3 ********* SHERBERGER (sic) hasn’t come to life since and it is now impossible to tell whether he was poisoned or not. There are many stories afloat which would seem to demand some investigation whether the contents of the stomach can be analyzed or not. Mrs. Sherberger was quite seriously sick the day after her husband’s death and there were further rumors of poisoning. If reports are true it is a sort of Lucretia Borgia affair. Scherer lost his balance and the gun was exploded, the shot tearing a big hole in the ceiling of the room. Scherer was uninjured, but had the shot carried through the floor above, Mrs. Henry Goedke, mother-in-law of the man, who occupied the room above, might have been killed. Scherer and his wife occupy the downstairs flat while Mrs. Scherer's parents reside upstairs. Scherer, returning home late Saturday evening, said that he was going to shoot his head off and made all preparations to carry out his threat, but his struggles to reach the trigger of the gun with his hand after placing the muzzle under is chin, caused him to lose his balance and the shot went wide. Scherer was in probate court today and after promising to forego the "pleasure" of shooting up his home and self, he was released on parole. It is said that Scherer has made similar threats before. WILLIAM SCHERER (d. 1916) DEATH INVADES CITY'S OFFICIAL FAMILY FOR FIRST TIME IN YEARS, ALD. WM. SCHERER DIES SUNDAY MEMBER OF COUNCIL FROM THIRD WARD SUCCUMBS TO ILLNESS OF TEN DAYS FROM PNEUMONIA AND COMPLICATIONS. HAD SERVED TWO TERMS AS MEMBER OF BOARD OF ALDERMEN. LONG RESIDENT OF CITY Death, for the first time in many years, has invaded the official family of Manitowoc and claimed a member in service of the municipal government, William Scherer, member of the city council from the 3rd ward, having passed away at his home, 1315 South Twelfth street, Sunday afternoon. A call for an informal meeting the city council to be held this evening to arrange for attendance at the funeral, has been issured by Mayor Edward Thorison. The council will attend the funeral in a body. The death of Alderman Scherer came as a shock to his associates in the city's official family and to the city, he having been ill but ten days. Death was due to pneumonia and complications and while his condition had been critical, it was not until Saturday that physicians abondoned hope of his recovery. The end came Sunday afternoon, Mr. Scherer being surrounded by members of his family as death claimed him. Mr. Scherer was a native of New York state and had he lived until March would have been 55 years of age. He came here with his parents as a boy and had made his home in the city practically all his life. He learned the shoemaker's trade which he followed up to the time of his death, having been employed at the Luebke & Kellner store in recent years having been at work only two weeks ago when stricken. Mr. Scherer attended the last meeting of the city council held Jan. 17 but at that time complained of illness and two days later was forced to take to his bed which he was destined not to leave alive. Alderman Scherer was serving his second two-year term as a member of the council, having been first elected in 1913 from the Third ward on the socialist ticket. He was one of two members of that part to be re-elected in the campaign last spring and the first of his party to be named in the Third ward. In his service in the council Alderman Scherer was named on important committees, being chairman of the police committee during his two terms. He was interested in the improvement of the department and only recently introduced a recommentation in the council for purchase of a motor patrol. He was also a member of committees on public improvements, on licenses and on streets. Mr. Scherer was a strong advocate of the rights of the small property owner of the city and was constantly watchful of the interests of his constituents. He was determined in his opposition to measures which he deemed unjust and as determined to support of those things which he believed for the general public good and while not an orator, he was active in debates on questions of public policy. Mr. Scherer was known as a supporter of the administration policies as outlined by Mayor Stolze. Besides his wife Mr. Scherer is survived by seven children, William, this city; Mrs. Mayme Seefluth, Madison, Omar, Boyd, Arline, Roy and Florella of this city. Funeral arrangements of the burial of Alderman Scherer have not been completed. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, January 31, 1916 P.1 ******** [bur. 02-02-1916/cause: erisipelis of face]

Scheuer, in driving to the city, came in over the Lake Shore road along the Traction Company line and when on the hill north of the company's power house the load tipped over and he was pinioned under it, one leg being crushed so that a bad fracture resulted. Scherer was found in his plight by neighbors who rushed him to this city as fast as possible and the leg was set in Dr. Gleason's office. The patient suffered the ordeal without flinching, without the aid of aneasthetics and immediately after was taken to his home. The town road which has been washed out several times is again said to be sadly in need of repair and the tipping of the load was due directly to the condition of the road. The road has been the source of trouble to the town and at one time its discontinuance as a highway was advocated. 1909
