WILLIAM G. SCHULTZ (d. 1958) Fun-Loving Friend of Children Billy Schultz, Manitowoc Circus School Leader, Dies at Madison William G. (Billy) Schultz, 77, former Manitowoc Vocational School physical education instructor and head man of Manitowoc's once-famous circus training school, died Thursday afternoon. He died following surgery at St. Mary Hospital, Madison, while on a visit to his son William Jr., director of the Madison YMCA. Schultz retired and sold his home here two years ago, moving to Bay City, Mich., where he and his wife lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hecker. A short time ago the families moved to Dumont, N.J. Schultz visited numerous friends in Manitowoc about three weeks ago and seemed in perfect health. He was stricken with a gall bladder attack shortly after he arrived in Madison. Billy's proudest boast was that he and his family had been "circus people." For most of his life he wore a broad painted smile?? That only accentuated his perpetual natural one and the mirth the former Ringling Bros. star clown and acrobat created for young and old alike was matched only by the warmth of his personality and the gratitude of the many wayward children whose paths he straightened out. Voted "Citizen of the Year" in public ceremonies by the Manitowoc Lions Club in 1955, it was the only recognition for many years of donated hours of work with young people, many of whom had been turned over to him, at his request by court and probation authorities. Wide Publicity He was the first man to bring the National Broadcasting Co., Hollywood motion picture units and photographers from Saturday Evening Post, American Magazine, and Life to this city as the result of international publicity gained through his free training school for the circus, the only activity of its kind in the northern hemisphere. More than 300 local youngsters, many of them former juvenile delinquents, were trained by Schultz and went on to take positions in world famed entertainment troupes in the most famous circus and vaudeville acts in the world. His annual "Graduation" performances attracted thousands of persons from all parts of the country and ran for a week to ten days in order to fill requests for seats. Each performance saw talent scouts from famous circuses and cameramen from newspapers… (Continued on Page M-13) Billy Schultz (continued from page 1)... magazines and motion pictures busy at work, National Broadcasting to broadcast a half hour of the local show coast-to coast one season. Paine News featured the show on one of its newsreels and a movie company made a short of the circus "training" activity here. Famous cartoonist columnist John Bix? Featured Schultz in a panel syndicated throughout the world. The Gauchos, an acrobatic teeterboard team trained by Schultz was featured in Ringling Bros. circus prior to World War II and played South America for some time. Expert Trouble Shooter Schultz's ability at his job was evidenced by the fact that from time to time the most renowned circum acrobatic acts in the word would stop at Manitowoc and sometimes work most of the night with Schultz who had a knack of putting his finger on something wrong with an act. He would watch the act once or twice and immediately spot the "gimmick", show them how to correct it and the troupe would be on its way to the next booking with no lost time. In his day he worked with movie star Joe E. Brown and taught him more of his acrobatic routines when Brown was a circus performer. Schultz was also credited with teaming ___ Rosalinda one of the world's greatest bareback riders. (almost two lines underinked).. he was associated with a number of old time wagon circuses, the A__ ___ Minstrel Show, numerous ___ companies and even served as an artist's model for ___ statues which stil stand in many public parks throughout the east and the south. In 1922 he came home to Manitowoc and married his childhood sweetheart, Lnida Geisler. She toured with him until shortly after William Jr. was born. Late in 1927 a back injury brought Schultz to Manitowoc for a rest and he was persuaded to take a job in the school system as a custodian with part time activities of training youngsters in tumbling routines. From this came in logical sequence small acts performing for local clubs, then a Boy Scout circus. Manitowoc and community celebrations and finally the big hometown circuses. Honored by City Just previous to his retirement he was accorded honors by the Manitowoc City Council and by Mayor Walter Koepke who issued a resolution terming Schultz the great public servant who has given of his time, efforts and ingenuity far beyond the call of duty for the advancement and teaching of the youth of the City of Manitowoc. After leaving Manitowoc Schultz worked part time for the Bay City, Michigan youth ___ ____ Assn ___ ___ ___ was producing miniature acrobat__ circus __ in the group. Mr. Schultz was born here Oct. 1, 1880, son of the late Ferdinand and Bertha Huebner Schultz, and became an entertainer early in life. Before joining vaudeville and the circuses he was an instructor of the old Turner Society headquarters in Manitowoc. Surviving are his wife, son, William ?. of Madison; daughter, Mrs. Edward Hecker? of ____ ,; Sister, Mrs. __ __ of Milwaukee and five grandchildren. CAROLINE SCHULZE KNEW DEATH WOULD COME DURING NIGHT Mrs. Katherine Schulze Told Friends That End Was at Hand. PATIENT SUFFERER RELEASED BY DEATH Conscious of the approach of death and forecasting her end during the night. Mrs. Katherine Schulze bid farewell to relatives and friends who visited her bedside Monday and calmly awaited the end which came as a deliverance from many months of suffering at 4 o’clock this morning, death being quiet and peaceful. Mrs. Schulze’s condition has been critical for several days and to friends who visited her on Monday she said she felt that she would not survive the night and the forecast proved a true one. Mrs. Schultze’s three children were at the bedside when the end came. Mrs. Schultze’s death occurred at the family home at Eighteenth street and Western avenue where she had resided for many years. For several years Mrs. Schulze had been a sufferer from a complication of diseases and for months past she had been unable to leave her bed. The efforts of skilled physicians and the kind ministrations of loving hands proved futile to stay the progress of disease and for several days past it had been known that death was but a matter of time. Mrs. Schulze was a patient sufferer and even under the terrible shadow, was cheerful and in the closing hours of life’s struggle, with the knowledge that death must be the end so soon, she met the inevitable with a calm smile of resignation on her lips. Mrs. Schulze was a native of Germany, having been born at West Pruessen sixty- three years ago. She came to America with her parents when 1? years of age, the family locating in this city which has since been her home. Her husband Adolph Schulze died seventeen years ago. Mrs. Schulze had been a sufferer for several years past from a complication of diseases and during the past several months her condition has been such that no hopes of recovery could beheld out. The death of her aged mother, Mrs. Katherine Klann at Collins, Mrs. Klann being 93 at her death, was a shock that no doubt hastened Mrs. Schulze’s end as she grieved deeply and had failed much more rapidly since that time. Mrs. Schulze is survived by two sons, Adolph E., manager of County Abstract Co. and Fred and one daughter, Miss Bertha, all of whom made their home with their mother in this city. Two brothers, William Klann of Collins and Ernst Klann of Reedsville and one sister, Mrs. Daniel Bubolz of Marshfield also survive. A member of the German Lutheran church, Mrs. Schluze up to the time of her illness was a devout worker in the church and was well known in the city and county. Death came to her as a merciful deliverance from pain suffering which for years had shadowed her life and which was borne patiently and with resignation. The funeral will probably be held Friday afternoon from the home to the Lutheran church, Rev. Machmiller officiating and interment being at Evergreen. Manitowoc Daily Herald, October 25, 1910 P.1 ******* Mrs. Katherine Schulze(sic) died at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning at her home, corner Western avenue and 18th street, after a protracted illness, aged 63 years. She was born in Germany at West Pruessen and came to this country with her parents in her girlhood. The family located in this city which has been the home of the deceased ever since. Her husband, Adolph Schulze, died seventeen years ago. After a long and useful life she died as she had lived-honored, trusted and loved. She reared her own monument while she lived in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was completed if work all done and well done constitutes completion. Mrs. Schulze is survived by two sons, Adolph E. manager of County Abstract Co. and Fred and one daughter, Miss Bertha, all of whom resided with their mother in this city. Two brothers, William Klann of Collins and Ernst Klann of Reedsville and one sister, Mrs. Daniel Bubolz of Marshfield also survive.
