WILLIAM E. SEIBEL W.E. Seibel, Merchant, Is Dead Today FOUND DYING IN OFFICE OF STORE AT NOON Worry Over Business Conditions Is Believed To Have Affected Mind; Survives Short Time Worry over conditions in the clothing business in which he had been a prominent figure for twenty years or more is believed to have unbalanced the mind of William E. Seibel, head of the company which bore his name, and to have been responsible for his death shortly before noon today when his unconscious form with a bullet in the right temple was found by employes in the office of the store on Quay street. Mr. Seibel, who was rushed to the hospital, never regained consciousness and died at 1:30. News of the untimely death of the well-known merchant and former hotel owner spread rapidly and proved a decided shock to business associates and acquaintances who had known him for the many years he was engaged in business here. He was about 63 years of age and had made his home in Manitowoc for about twenty-five years, coming here as manager of the Stumpf and Langhoff company of Milwaukee and later acquiring ownership of the branch here at a time it was located in the Urbanek building. He operated clothing stores here continuously since that time. Shot Not Heard Employes of the store stated that they had heard no shot fired but received their first intimation shortly before 11:15 o'clock when they heard the sound of moans coming from the private office of Mr. Seibel on the balcony of the store. Police were notified and when Officer Aaron Peterson reached the scene he found the apparently lifeless body of Mr. Seibel stretched upon a sofa in the office with blood still flowing from the wound. Coroner W.G. Kemper was called and although it was apparent that the wound would prove fatal, ordered Mr. Seibel sent to the hosptal. Used '38 Calibre Revolver The weapon used by Mr. Seibel was a .38 calibre five-shelled revolver and although the weapon was fully loaded only one shot had been fired from it. Indications that it had been purchased only recently were given by the presence of the price tag on it. Prior to the discovery of the body, he remarked to one of his clerks as he handed him the store key that "if anything happens to me, lock up the store at once." Was Pioneer in Business Mr. Seibel had been in ill-health for sometime and was frequently under the care of physicians. For years his untiring efforts in the clothing business here made him widely known throughout his section and his store was one of the best known establishments in the county. He was widely known and his ability in judging merchandise became a byword among persons affiliated with the same type of business. Coming here about thirty years ago he acted as manager for the Milwaukee concern for some time before acquiring an interest in the business and he subsequently conducted clothing establishments on North Eighth street and later on two corners at Eighth and Franklin streets and about two years ago moved into his present stand on Quay street. He was contemplating establishment of a second store on the north side when he died. Operated Hotel In addition to his activities in the clothing business, Mr. Seibel at one time owned the Williams Hotel here, a pioneer and widely-known state hotel which was disposed of about two years ago when the Kresge interests purchased the property. Since that time he devoted his entire time to his store. When not actively interested in the direction of his business affairs he was to be found at some lake in Northern Wisconsin and was an ardent devotee of all forms of game fishing. Left Several Notes Contents of several notes which he left with his papers in a strong box next to his desk were not made public, Coroner Kemper refusing to permit them to be opened until he secured orders for their release. A note found on the top of the boxes directing that his body be taken care of by the Wattawa & Cy Urbanek company. Arrangements Incomplete Arrangements for the funeral services of Mr. Seibel were not completed at an early hour this afternoon owing to the unexpectedness of the death. Arrival of relatives was being awaited before decision was made. In addition to his widow, Mr. Seibel is survived by a daughter, Mill Wilma, who is a student at the University of Wisconsin. Two brothers, one state patrol agent, Joseph Seibel, and a sister also survive. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. CLIFFORD SEILER Contractor Drowns in Shoto River Clifford Seiler Goes Under After Boat Overturns While Fishing Clifford Seiler, 33, local excavating contractor, drowned in the Shoto river a mile and a half north of Two Rivers between 3:30 and 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon while trying to swim to shore after the boat from which he was fishing with two companions overturned. The body was recovered at 6:30 p.m. with grappling hooks brought from Manitowoc by Sheriff Max Hiller. The Two Rivers coast guard assisted the sheriff, deputies and residents living in the vicinity of the drowning. Boat Tips Over Seiler was in the boat with his brother-in-law, Frank Pilger, and Miles Panosh, Joe Panosh, son of Miles, was fishing from the bank of the river. The men were fishing for suckers and the flat-bottomed boat was equipped with a large dip net. Panosh was rowing the boat and Pilger was lifting the net. The men were dressed in heavy woolen garments and wore boots. “I was standing up in the back of the boat lifting the net.” Said Pilger in telling the story of the drowning. “Seiler who was in the front of the boat, also stood up to see if there were any fish in the net. The boat tipped over. Panosh couldn’t swim at all and I knew Seiler wasn’t a very good swimmer. I hollered for Seiler and Panosh to hang on to the bottom of the boat and I would swim to shore and got help. But Seiler started swimming so I hung on to the boat. Saw Him Sink “When Seiler was about half way to shore I saw him sink. I could only see his cap. I hollered for him to try to get back to the boat and he seemed to be trying to get back to us. Then he went down again. I grabbed an oar and shoved it to-… (cont. on page 9) CLIFFORD SEILER DROWNS IN RIVER (Cont. from Page 1)… ward him. He was going down again but the oar hit his chest and I could feel him take hold of it. I pulled him toward the boat but when he was about six feet away from the boat he sank again and he didn’t come up. Panosh and I lay on the boat and paddled until we could touch bottom.” Joe Panosh saw the boat overturn and Seiler’s futile efforts to reach shore. He ran to the farm house of George Pieschel and called the sheriff and the coast guard. Emil Peterick, who resides near the Pieschel farm, also called the sheriff. Get Grappling Hooks Sheriff Hiller and Deputy Otto Lohse obtained grappling hooks from the police department and went to the scene of the drowning. Boatswain Deegan and Surfmen William Lucas and Harold Jacobsen of the Two Rivers coast guard arrived with a large boat. Soon four boats were engaged in a search for the body. Peterick and Lohse were in one boat, Pieschel and Joe Panosh in another, Ray Mandel, Robert Grenier and sheriff Hiller in another, and the coast guardsmen in their boat. At about 6:30 p.m. Pieschel located the body in about 18 feet of water. The body was placed in the larger coast guard boat and brought to Shimek and Schwartz funeral home in this city. Seiler, married and the father of four children, was an excavating contractor. The family resides at 1801 Menasha avenue. He was born July 23, 1902 in this city. On Sept. 24, 1924, Mr. Seiler married Miss Eleanor Pilger. JOHN SEILER JOHN SEILER KILLED, TRAIN HITS AUTO SAD ENDING OF TRIP TO CONVEY LOVE Local People on Way Home After Birthday Party John Seiler residing on Rural Route 5 just outside the city limits was killed and four other Manitowoc residents seriously injured at Appleton, Friday night when the automobile in which they were driving, was struck by the C. & N.W. passenger train within the city limits of Appleton. THE DEAD: John Seiler, aged 70. THE INJURED: Eleanor Pilger, fractured skull, may not live. Clifford Seiler, internal injuries. Anton Panosh, serious cuts and bruises. Frank Pilger, cut about the head and shoulders. The crash occurred in the presence of a throng of people on the depot platform at Appleton, who were awaiting the train's arrival. Went To Convey Greetings The party went to Appleton from here yesterday afternoon to convey birthday greetings and gifts to Mrs. Lella Mortimer, a daughter of Mr. Seiler, who lives at 732 North Division Street, that city. After felicitations had been extended and a happy social hour had passed, the party left the home in their machine driving south on Superior Street Street (sic). A short distance from there, there is a crossing of the North Western tracke (sic) there being four or five sets of rails. Panosh was driving the car and according to the story he told today, did not notice the oncoming train which at this point rounds a curve and cannot be seen until almost at the crossing. ******** HAD PREMONITION THAT HE WOULDN'T RETURN When the trip was proposed yesterday the aged Seiler willingly became a member of the party. When it became time to start, however, and he had not changed his clothes, he was importuned to do so but said, "What's the use of changing clothes, I'm not coming back anyway." Asked what he meant by that he said, "Well, I'm not coming back, that's all. I'm going to live among the Indians from now on." ******** The gates were up and the machine was partly on the track when the driver saw the headlights of the train, but too late. Coming into the station it was traveling at a comparatively low rate of speed but the engineer was unable to avert the crash and the train hit the auto squarely in the middle skidding it along the tracks for a distance of 600 feet. Panosh tried to swing his machine to the left to avoid the train but there was a freight car in the way and by this time it was too late and the horror stricken crowd on the depot platform saw the death scene enacted with the occupants of the car unable to leap for their lives. Seiler Was Still Alive Bystanders rushed to the assistance of the party and found that although Seiler was still alive, he was unconscious and died before he could be taken to the hospital. Of the injured Miss Pilger is in the most serious condition and has probably suffered a fractured skull which may prove fatal. The others of the party miraculously escaped with cuts and bruises and were taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital for treatment. At the point where the accident occurred no flagman is on duty in the daytime, it is said, and Panosh when seen today declares that he felt perfectly safe in driving over the tracks when the gates were up. The train which crashed into the machne is known as the Copper Country Limited, northbound out of Chicago, arriving at 8:06 P.M. over the Northern Wisconsin division. There was a large crowd of people at the depot who witnessed the accident, being for the most part delegates to the National United Commercial Travelers Convention just finishing a session at Appleton, the delegates being on the way home. Auto wreckage was strewn all along the track and the body of the car with its occupants was carried along on the cow catcher until the engineer could bring his engine to a stop. Two of the occupants of the car were able to climb out unassisted but the age man and Miss Pilger were carried to the depot from where they were taken to the hospital in the ambulance. Seiler died on the way. The victim of the accident, John Seiler, was born in this county in 1854 at Manitowoc Rapids. He was married in Manitowoc and his widow survives. There are three children, two boys, Clifford, who was on the trip with him, and Irving, with whom he made his home on the Plank road west of the city, and, one daughter at Appleton whom they were visiting and carrying a message of congratulation. Miss Pilger and Clifford Seiler, two other members of the party, are sweethearts, and are to wed soon. VICTOR SENGLAUB Victor Senglaub, about whose illness with typhus we reported earlier, died Wednesday of that disease. The deceased, a son of Louis C. Senglaub here was born 31 years ago in Town Schleswig and moved to Manitowoc when his father took office as County Clerk. He attended school here. For a long time he belonged to the Militia Company. Ten years ago he moved to Sheboygan and spent many years as day clerk in the Grand Hotel… He joined the Militia Company there and became a 1st Lieutenant. There he met Miss Bohlmann and they were setting the wedding day when he became ill with the terrible illness which took his life. Victor Senglaub is survived by his sorrowing parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon in Sheboygan. Der Nord Westen, 21 Mar. 1907 ********* DIED: Victor H. Senglaub, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis C. Senglaub of this city, died at the St. Nickolas hospital in Sheboygan at 6 o'clock Wednesday evening, March 13th, after a few weeks' illness with typhoid fever. Victor H. Senglaub was born at Louis Corners, in the town of Schleswig, this county, in 1876. He attended the rural school at Louis Corners until he attained the age of thirteen, in 1889, when his father, Mr. Louis C. Senglaub, now city assessor, was elected to the office of county clerk of this county, and when the family removed to this city. Victor then attended the north side schools and, in due time, he graduated with honors from the north side high school. On completing the high school course he accepted a position as clerk at the old Northwestern house in this city, which hostelry is now know as the Hotel Victoria. He held that position until 1897, when he went to Sheboygan and there secured employment as head clerk in the Grand Hotel, one of the leading hostelries of the Chair city, which position he held continuously for ten years; that is, up to the time of his final illness. The decedent was a very active, industrious, intelligent young man. He had a host of friends in Sheboygan; and, although not a resident of this city for the last ten years, he had continued to number many of the young people of this city among his friends, he having made frequent visits here to relatives and former schoolmates and friends. For years the decedent was a member of Company C. Wisconsin National guard. Several years ago he rose from the rank of a private to that of a commissioned officer. Later he was elected second lieutenant of Company C. the vote resulting in his election being unanimous. He acquitted himself with much credit at the examination, and, accordingly, was given the position to which he had been elevated. Last year, when there was a vacancy in the first lieutenancy, Victor Senglaub was elected first lieutenant, he receiving the unanimous vote of the members of the company. He again passed the examination, and secured his commission. Victor H. Senglaub is survived by his parents, two brother, Otto of this city and Rudolph of Quarry, Ind.; and three sisters, the Misses Agnes, Helen and Leona, all of this city. Victor Senglaub's untimely death is a sad blow to the family and to the young lady, a Miss Bohlmann of Sheboygan, to whom he was to have been married in the near future. It had been planned to celebrate the wedding in this city. The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Sheboygan. The funeral was in charge of Company C. Besides the bereaved relatives residing in this city, a number of friends from here were present at the obsequies. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, March 21, 1907 pg. 1 ******** TWELVE DEATHS IN A WEEK Big Harvest Reaped by Grim Destroyer in County. Death has reaped a large harvest in Manitowoc county within the past week or ten days, the list numbering no less than twelve persons. The list included seven pioneer residents and old settlers and of the number four had passed the age of eighty years, two were children, one young man and the others were middle life. ALLEN T. SEPNIESKI SCHOOL BOY LOSES LIFE WHILE IN RIVER HERE A.SEPNIESKI FALLS TO DEATH WHILE AT PLAY Loses Balance While He and Playmates Play at River Bank; Efforts to Revive Fail Tragedy, grim and stark, stalked along the Manitowoc river for the second time in as many days to claim the life of Allen Sepnieski, nine-year-old son of Mr. and m Mrs. Frank Sepnieski, Ninth and Chicago streets, the little boy losing his life shortly before 6 o’clock yesterday afternoon when he fell into the river at the foot of N. Sixth street. The removal of the boy’s body from the river marked the second removed in two days by police, the floating body of Felix Tadych, 29, being taken from the waters the previous day. Although the boy was in the water only about fifteen minutes with police officers recovering the body in short time, life was extinct when he was removed, according to City Physician, Dr. A. J. Shimek, who was at the scene. Playing with Friends Young Sepnieski, together with Leslie Brodkorb, 9, 305 N. Fifth street and Edward Aschenbrenner, 11, 508 Buffalo street, was at play along the banks of the river and was shielded from sight of workmen near the place by the huge stone and sand piles along the river bank. The three were throwing stones upon a board floating in the river near the dock, young Sepnieski kneeling along the dock when he lost his balance and fell into the river. According to his companions, he came to the surface but once and then sank out of sight. While young Brodkorb ran to the workmen employed nearby, Aschenbrenner ran to a soft drink establishment at the corner of Sixth and Commercial streets to call for help but police had already been notified by persons at the Quality Fruit company across the river, when the boy was observed to have fallen into the river. Police responded immediately after the call and although only a short time elapsed before the body was brought to the surface any attempts to restore breathing were fruitless as the youth was already dead. Student at Sacred Heart Allen Sepnieski was a student in the third grade of the Sacred Heart school and was popular with his playmates as a youth of great good nature and of active nature. In addition to his parents, the boy is survived by one brother, Francis, aged two, and a sister, Nora, aged eight. Funeral services will be held from the Sacred Heart church on Monday morning at 9 o’clock with Father Luby officiating.
