JAMES LEE TESARIK 2-Year-Old Boy Run Over By Train Apparently Had Strayed Away, Coroner Says ROCKWOOD—A 23-months old boy met instant death late Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a Chicago and North Western freight train a short distance from his home a mile north of here. The victim was James Lee Tesarik, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tesarik of Rt. 1, Two Rivers. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen, who investigated, said the boy apparently strayed from his home in the company of two dogs and was lying on the tracks when the northbound train approached. The tracks run in a line more than 1,000 feet east of the home. Railroad employes said it looked as though the youngster was asleep on the tracks with one of the dogs. Another theory was that he may have tripped on the tracks and knocked himself unconscious. He reportedly did not move as the train approached. Not Traveling Very Fast The dogs attracted the attention of the engineer but he was unable to stop in time. Judging from the short distance in which the train stopped after hitting the body, it was not traveling very fast, Doctor Teitgen said. The body was badly mangled. Mrs. Tesarik told Doctor Teitgen that James and his three year old brother, William, had gotten up from a nap about 4 p.m. and went out to play in the farm yard. She said she heard William talking and presumed that his younger brother was with him. However, James apparently went with the dogs down a lane running east toward the tracks. The accident happened about 5:10 p.m. Parents of the child said he and his brother were inseparable companions and were exceptionally good about staying in the yard and out of Highway 141 which runs along the front of the house. Both dogs disappeared after the accident. One returned home later Wednesday night and the other came back early Thursday morning. Doctor Teitgen said there would be no inquest. The boy’s death was not considered a traffic fatality. Funeral Friday Funeral services for the Tesarik boy will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc, the Rev. L. M. Koeninger officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. He was born Aug 31, 1956, in Manitowoc. ROBERT E. TESARIK RURAL MOTORIST KILLED IN CRASH Robert Tesarik Victim; Truck Rolls In Ditch Manitowoc – One man lay dead in a roadside ditch and another was pinned in the cab of an overturned pickup truck for more than 1 1/2 hours in pre-dawn darkness Monday before help arrived. The victim was identified as Robert E. Tesarik, 34, of Rt. 4, Manitowoc. He was pronounced dead at the scene of crushing injuries by Dr. R.G. Strong, acting county coroner. (paragraph about passenger omitted for privacy) The accident occurred 5 1/2 miles southwest of the city on Highway 42 at about 3:40 a.m. but it was not reported to police until 5:10 a.m. Heard Autos Pass While pinned in the truck cab with gasoline reportedly dripping on him, Radandt said he heard four automobiles go past the scene without stopping. Officers said the wrecked truck in the east ditch would “definitely” have been visible in the headlights of a car no matter from which direction it approached the area. (paragraph about who reported accident/omitted for privacy) Details of the accident were pieced together by Sgt. Leo Naidl and Officer R.J. Christianson of the Manitowoc County Traffic Police Dept. The truck, a 1967 model GMC, was traveling north on 42 when it ran off the right side on a slight curve, officers said. Then it rolled over about 2 1/2 times and landed on its top in the ditch in a wrecked condition. The truck was out of control for a total distance of 380 feet, leading officers to conclude that Tesarik fell asleep at the wheel. Thrown Out Tesarik was thrown out and was found lying face up in the ditch approximately 15 feet north of the overturned truck. Evidence indicated that the truck rolled over the victim. Radandt remained conscious in the wreckage despite his injuries and a wrecker was required to free him. Police said the truck was equipped with safety seat belts but that they apparently were not in use at the time of the accident. The men were en route home from Gary, Ind., where they had delivered a cargo of rabbits and guinea pigs. Tesarik, an employee of Eck Foundries, owned and operated the White Cloud Rabbitry at his rural Manitowoc home. Police learned that the pair had left Gary at about midnight and had taken turns driving. Radandt said Tesarik took over the driving chores from him at Osman. (snip - paragraph about another accident) Funeral Wednesday Tesarik was born May 6, 1934, in Town of Kossuth, the son of the late Reuben Tesarik and Mrs. Mildred Kotche Tesarik. He attended Manitowoc schools and was graduated in 1952 from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. He was a moulder-grinder for Eck Foundries Inc., Manitowoc, and was a member of the National Moulders and Allied Union No. 301. He married Nancy Sloggett Aug. 28, 1954, at Manitowoc. HENRY TETEAK Blow Torch Blast Kills Henry Teteak The explosion of a gasoline blow torch Saturday afternoon in a work shop on North Tenth street resulted in the death of Henry Teteak, 57, and seriously injured Henry L. Hardina, salesman, who is a patient at the Holy Family hospital. Both live at 423 North Tenth street and are brothers-in-law. Teteak, who for a number of years was engaged in the tavern and hotel business with a brother on Chicago street, the Marfek place, had a shop at the rear of that place and was equipped with wood turning and other machinery. He was at work at the time of the accident. Hardina, with whom he lives, had stepped into the place to tell him he wanted him to make a trip to Abbotsford to attend the funeral of a relative and was about to leave when the blast came. Both men had their clothes sprayed with the burning gasoline. In spite of his injuries Teteak walked to the ambulance and sat on the cot on the way to the hospital, being unable to lie down because of burns to his back. He died at 2 o’clock Sunday morning. Hardina’s condition is serious but he has a chance for recovery. The only part of his body that did not suffer burns were the feet because he was wearing heavy shoes. The fire department easily extinguished the blaze in the shop and damage was small. Funeral services for Henry Teteak were held Wednesday afternoon. Survivors are a son, Harry, four brothers and four sisters. MRS. MOSES TEWELES [Anna] Death of the wife of Moses Teweles on Tuesday. She committed suicide by jumping into a well. The article describes previous suicide attempts. Der Nord Westen, 4 Feb. 1875 ********* FOUND DEAD IN A WELL—One of the saddest events which we have been called upon to chronicle for some time took place in this city on Monday morning last. Mrs. Teweles, a lady well known and highly esteemed in this city, whose ill health of late has caused several fits of temporary insanity to come upon her, during which she would attempt self-destruction; but until Monday all her efforts to take her own life were baffled by the vigilance of those about her. On Monday morning, however, at an early hour she succeeded in persuading her husband, who was weary and worn by log watching, that the cloud had passed from her mind and that he might safely lie down and rest, but he had scarcely fallen asleep before she quietly arouse and rushed out of doors to a neighboring well, and threw herself in. This occurred before daylight, consequently no one saw the rash deed, and as a fierce snow storm was raging at the time her foot prints were so obscured that it was impossible to follow them up and discover her, although a vigorous search was immediately instituted. Her body was found about eleven o’clock in the forenoon, after being in the well seven hours. As the water in the well was not sufficient depth to drown her, she in all probability was chilled to death. Only a week ago she made an attempt on her life by jumping into the river, but was taken out before death took place only to renew the attempt at self-destruction by drinking boiling water, which was again prevented. She leaves a large family of children, the youngest being only three months old, who will sorely miss their mother’s tender care. Her funeral which took place to-day was largely attended. Manitowoc Pilot, February 4, 1875 P. 3 ********* MRS. MOSES TEWELES [Anna] DISTRESSING SUICIDE A Woman in A fit of Insanity Springs into a Well and Died From Exposure One of the saddest cases of suicide which we have been called upon to chronicle occurred in this city on Tuesday last, the wife of Mr. Moses Teweles throwing herself into a well and dying from exposure, the water not being deep enough to admit of her drowning herself. From intimate friends of the family we glean the following particulars. Mrs. Anna Teweles was 43 years of age and the mother of eight living children. For some weeks she had been suffering from sickness which had the result of finally driving her to a state of insanity. She had once before made an attempt to take her life by jumping into the river at the foot of Sixth Street and would have been successful had not some men in the vicinity observed her movements and rescued her. A strict watch was kept on her by her friends, but at about four o'clock on Tuesday morning, she eluded them and with nothing on but the scantiest of raiment, she left the house and sprung into a well nearby and although a search was immediately instituted she was not found for several hours afterwards, her head, one shoulder and one knee being visible above the surface of the water, which proved to be only about two feet deep. There is no questions but what she died of exposure. She was taken out and conveyed to her house, a jury was impaneled who found a verdict as follows: "At an inquisition taken at my office in the city of Manitowoc, Wis., on the 2d day of Feb., 1875, before me, one of the Justices of the Peace for the said city and county, upon the view of the body of Anna Teweles, there dead, by the jurors whose names are here unto subscribed, who being duly sworn to inquire on behalf of the people of the State when and by what means, the said Anna Teweles came to her death, do find that her death was caused by jumping into a well while in a fit of insanity and from exposure." Wm H. Glover J.P. Ira P Smith, H.C. Albrecht, H. W. Murphy, Norris Ross, Wm Gonine, Albert Bomier Dr. H.C. Coakley testifieis: "I am a practicing physician of this city. I was called to see her body. I was acquainted with Mrs. Teweles and know it to be her. I examined her body. I don't think she was drowned in the well but died from exposure in the water. She has been subject to fits of insanity. I have been her physician." The unfortunate family resides in one of the buildings owned by Jacob Peterson on Chicago Street between 6th and 7th and the well in which the poor woman ended her career was within a stone's thrown of the house. The affair is to be the more regretted particularly as the eight children are still young, the smallest being but five months old. The domestic relations existing between the unfortunate woman and her husband were of the happiest, were proof of her insanity requisite it could be found in the fact that she left a home where a kind husband and bright, intelligent children did all in their power to make her happy. We sympathize sincerely with them and the relatives of the deceased who constitute some of our prominent Hebrew residents. Manitowoc Tribune, Thurs., Feb. 5, 1875 ************* Card of Thanks I hereby tender my sincere thanks to my brethren of the Order of the Sons of Herman and to the Order of Odd Fellows for their kindness to me and mine during the sickness of my wife. I also tender my thanks to my friends and lodge brethren as well as to the speaker at the grave, for their sympathy at the burial of my wife. M. Teweles Manitowoc Tribune, Feb. 11, 1875

CAPT CHAN R. THAYER CAPTAIN CHAN THAYER DIES SUDDENLY ILL TWO DAYS, END COMES AT CLEVELAND, O. Well Known Vessel Man Resident Here Many Years Although messages received here Sunday announced his serious illness, relatives and friends were greatly shocked by news of the demise of Captain Chauncey Thayer, former Manitowoc man, which occurred at Cleveland, Ohio, last night after an illness of but two days. Captain Thayer was stricken Saturday night and was removed to a hospital where it was found that he was suffering from pneumonia and his condition grave. Mrs. Thayer, who had been visiting here, was summoned and reached Cleveland yesterday morning and was with her husband when the end came. Body Brought Here The body of Capt. Thayer, familiarly known here as Chan Thayer, will be brought to this city, arriving Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Arthur Schuetze, a brother-in-law of Mrs. Thayer, left for Chicago at noon today to meet the body and accompany Mrs. Thayer here with it. Born At Sturgeon Bay Capt. Thayer was born at Sturgeon Bay 56 years ago and spent his boyhood days there, coming to Manitowoc when he adopted the lakes as a career. His first service was on the tug Pankratz in this part and for years he was commander of the tug Arctic of the Goodrich Transit Company fleet in the local harbor. Ten years ago he removed to Chicago and later became captain of the steamer Hydro, the largest sand sucker on the lakes and a product of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. yards. Thayer had been located at Cleveland where he was directing the rebuilding of one of the company’s boats. Visited Here Easter The death of Capt. Thayer is the more shocking to Manitowoc because it was only ten days ago that he visited the city apparently in his usual robust health and looking exceptionally well. Thayer left for Cleveland to attend to his business interests while Mrs. Thayer continued her visit her until the message summoned her to what proved to be the death bed of Mr. Thayer. THOMAS THEISEN KOSSUTH MAN FOUND SUICIDE ON HOME FARM Thomas Theison (sic), 48, Dead Several Days Before Found; Locate Part of Ramminger Body Two gruesome discoveries involving county residents who met death by their own acts were brought to the attention of the sheriff’s department this morning, one of them being that of a suicide who apparently had hung in a barn in the Town of Kossuth for the past three or four days and the other being the finding of the lower part of the body of Jacob Ramminger, Kiel resident who ended his life some weeks ago by the use of dynamite. Kossuth Man Hangs Self The lifeless body of Thomas Theison, residing on a farm north of Branch and in the town of Kossuth, was found this morning by a young son of John Vraney when the latter went into the barn after it was noted that animals on the Theison homestead had not been taken care of for several days. The partly decomposed body of the man was found hanging from a rafter of the haymow in the barn. He was 48 years of age and resided on the same farm during his entire lifetime. Coroner Kemper summoned to the scene, said the man had been dead for several days and that the case was so patently one of suicide that no inquest would be held. He ordered the body cut down and it was later moved to the Wattawa chapel here. Lived Alone Last Few Days According to residents of the vicinity, Theison had been drinking heavily for some time, a pint bottle partly filled with alleged whisky of the moonshine variety being found in his pocket. It was said that his drinking caused his wife to leave the home several days ago and it is believed that his mind may have become temporarily unbalanced because of his excessive drinking. The absence of Theison from premises had occasioned no particular interest until neighbors noted that the harness had not been removed from his horses for several days and that cattle had been permitted to remain in a small enclosure for some time. In addition to his widow, he is survived by five brothers, Anton at Branch, Leo and William at Loyal, Charles at Antigo and John, whose whereabouts are not known, and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Degenhardt at St. Louis and Mrs. Margaret McCormack at Sterling, Ill. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon from the Wattawa chapel with interment at Evergreen cemetery. Friends who may wish to view the remains at the Wattawa chapel may do so between the hours of 2 and 4 o’clock tomorrow afternoon and from 7 to 9 oclock tomorrow evening… Manitowoc Herald News, July 6, 1929 P. 3 ******** [bur. 8 July 1929/age 46 yrs./died at Kossuth, WI/cause: suicide by hanging]
