MYRTLE THIRIOT From Der Nord Westen, 21 Nov. 1907: Myrtle Thiriat of Milwaukee, a child of 3-years, fell sick with diphtheria in the residence of Hermann Vieweger where she was on a visit with her mother, and died there of the disease on Sunday. The body was buried in the city cemetery. ******** [cause: diptheria]

VICTOR THIRIOT MANITOWOC MAN IS FOUND DEAD IN ROOM AT APPLETON HOTEL Victor Thierot (sic) Leaves Will Directing Simple Burial--Wants No Hearse or Carriages, Dray Wagon For Body WAS KNOWN HERE AS ECCENTRIC CHARACTER Victor Thierot, for several years a resident of this city but lately of Appleton, was found dead in a room at the Nortewestern (sic) hotel in that city Sunday evening when, alarmed by the non-appearance of the man, hotel employes forced an entrance to the room and found the dead body. Thierot's death was due to heart disease. He was 52 years of age and so far as known had no relatives in this country. Thierot was known as an eccentric character and the eccentricities of life were carried out in his death. Among the effects of the dead man in his room at the Appleton hotel was found a copy of a will in which the testator made unusual requests relative to the disposal of his remains and the manner of funeral which he desired. Here are some of the directions of the will for burial of Thierot: A quiet, simple funeral. A common casket, with no ornaments, preferably a wooden box painted black. No galvanized iron case. No hearse or carriages. Wants body conveyed to cemetery by express or dray wagon. Photographs of dead daughter, both framed and unframed, to be buried with him. Photograph of self, with one of grave at Evergreen, prepared in advance, to be placed in the casket. City sexton, Manitowoc, to take charge of burial. The paper found in Thierot's room at Appleton is a copy of a will drawn in this city November 25, 1911 and the original of which is in the hands of Nash & Nash, attorneys for the dead man. Thierot requested that a copy of the document be made and he carried it among his papers. The will says that Thierot has no relatives in this country or in Europe and directs the disposal of small estate, which includes life insurance policies. Life Marred by Tragedies- Thierot's life was marred by two tragedies, the first the desertion of his wife wrecking his domestic happiness and a year later death claimed his only daughter, a child idolized by the father whose grief for a time threatened his reason. His life was boundup in the child and after her death, less than a year from the time the mother left, Thierot arranged for the building of an underground vault at Evergreen for the body, making provision at the same time for his body when he should die. The spot is covered by a marble slab and head stone, with the inscription "Baby" and is surrounded by an iron fence and is one of the most attractive spots in the city of the dead. The grave attracted particular attention of visitors and the devoted father at all times had the place given the most careful attention and arranged for flowers to be placed on the grave regularly. Brooded Over Troubles- Thierot brooded over his troubles and reports from Appleton where the man had made his home for four months past, say that he had been melancholy for weeks, but there is no suggestion that he took his own life, physicians who conducted an examination of the body saying that death was due to heart failure. Thierot was employed by a paper company at Appleton and had made his home at the Northwestern hotel during his residence in that city. Body to be Sent Here- Funeral arrangements have not been made at Appleton, the authorities having taken charge of the remains and it is said Thierot's request relative to his burial, will be observed in so far as possible. Thierot was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose having affiliated with the Oshkosh lodge of that Order some time ago and it is expected that the local lodge will take charge of the body when it is brought here for burial, as requested by the dead man. Thierot was not known to have been a member of any other organization and being without relatives, the Moose will arrange for the burial. Thierot had few social ties here and his frinedships were not many, the man preferring to hold aloof from others and live his own life. It is said that his estate will amount to several hundred dollars but what disposition he has made of it is not known. Police Get Notice- News of Thierot's death was received here in a message to the local police from the authorities at Appleton with request for directions as to what to do with the body. The attorneys of the dead man were notified and the Moose here and at Oshkosh were advised. It is probable that the body will be brought here from Appleton on Thursday for burial. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, December 23, 1912 P.1 ******** GOES TO CEMETERY IN HEARSE INSTEAD OF DRAY WAGON AS HE ASKED FOR IN HIS LAST WILL Victor Thierot (sic), late eccentric character who died at Appleton and who wanted to go to the cemetery in a dray wagon, did not have his last request carried out, the body being conveyed to its resting place in a hearse instead, but all other requests for simplicity were certainly carried out to the letter. The body was brought here from Appleton and Sexton Pasewalk who found that there were enough funds provided for a hearse had this conveyance and one rig comprise the funeral cortege to Evergreen. Thierot died in An Appleton hotel and in his will provided that a day (sic) wagon convey his remains to the burying ground, but the city sexton deemed the last request too eccentric and crude a method of conducting the last rites and elected to disregard the man's wishes. IRENE H. THOMAS Heart Attack Blamed For Death of Young Girl at Local Beach No Pulse Reported But Reinhardt Works on Body Three Hours Although help was close by and the body was brought to shore in less than a minute after her collapse, Irene Thomas, 15-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas, 1027 South 25th street, lost her life late Tuesday afternoon at the southside bathing beach. Rescue workers led by Melvin Reinhardt, the life guard at the beach, worked for over three hours at resuscitation efforts over the body of the girl on the beach but without avail. Doctors summoned pronounced that death was caused by a heart attack. Miss Thomas, in company with Pearl Neuser, a school friend she had chummed with ever since she came here from Two Rivers to reside last July, went to the south- side beach yesterday afternoon for a swim. She was a good swimmer, having learned at the Vits pool at the high school. Both girls were only a short distance from shore and not over their depth when Miss Thomas collapsed. Miss Neuser said she thought at first the girl was about to make an underwater dive toward her but when she did not come to the surface she clutched at the limp body. Reinhardt Rushed About this time, Reinhardt noticed that something was wrong with Miss Thomas and rushed out into the water. He was at her side in a moment and carried the body to shore. Reinhardt, assisted by Charles Hubbard, Oliver Raduenz and Joseph Traurig, worked over the body for three hours, although three physicians, summoned to the scene, said that there was no pulse response. Robert Lindwall, in charge of swimming classes at the high school, also hurried to the beach and assisted with artificial respiration. (snip) Pearl Neuser told the frantic parents and the sister when they reached the beach that she and Miss Thomas were well inside the life buoys at the beach and that Miss Thomas ducked under the water and seemed to be trying to catch at the Neuser girl’s feet. She said she seized her by the back of her bathing suit and then felt the body go limp in her arms. It was nearly dark last night be-.. (Cont. on Page 20)…HEART ATTACK AT BEACH BLAMED FOR DEATH IN WATER (Cont. from page 1).. fore resuscitation efforts were abandoned. Melvin Reinhardt, the beach guard, who has eleven lives to his credit, was in a state of exhaustion when he was finally forced to stop his attempt at reviving the girl and taken to his home. City authorities complimented Reinhardt for his attendance to duty, even after all hope was lost and the death was known to have been caused by the girl’s heart rather than drowning. The parents and the sister of the Thomas girl remained at the beach until the last. Miss Thomas was approaching her sixteenth birthday when her life was snuffed out here Tuesday. She was born in September 15 years ago at Minneapolis. Three years ago her parents moved to Two Rivers from Minneapolis to engage in the restaurant business there. Last July they came to this city, Mr. Thomas taking over an eating house near Tenth and Washington streets. Miss Thomas was a sophomore last year in the Lincoln high school and was looking forward with anticipation to entering her junior year here next September. Besides the parents, one sister, Evelyn, at home, survives. The remains were removed last night to the Leschke funeral home where they may be viewed tonight and Thursday. Funeral services will be held from the Leschke funeral home Friday at 8:45 a.m. and at 9 a.m. at a high mass at the st. Boniface church. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. REV. GEORGE THOMPSON .....the arrival of Rev. George W. Thompson, in August 1853, he coming from Cincinnati to take up the work. At this time a mission was maintained at Robinson's settlement and the local church included thirty-three communicants. His ministry, however, was short for in 1854, while nursing cholera patients he fell ill of the dread disease and died on October 14th, his body being interred at Evergreen. "History of Manitowoc County" by Ralph Plumb 1904, P. 187: ******** Rev. George Thompson died, he was 36 yrs. old. Manitowoc Herald, 14 Oct 1854 ******** On Monday, the 9th instant, Rev'd George Thompson, Rector of St. James Parish, in this village, aged 36 years. Manitowoc Tribune, Manitowoc, Wis. Saturday, October 14, 1854 P. 3 ******** DIED - on Monday, the 9th inst, George Thompson, son of Irvine Thompson, Esq., of Mount Vernon, Ohio and Rector of St. James Parish, Manitowoc, aged 26 years. "We have fallen upon gloomy days." Days that bring their round of sorrow - days of bereavement to the State and desolation to the church. The deceased came to this village a little more than a year ago and assumed the Rectorship of St. James Church. From the commencement he exhibited a devotion to his calling which seemed more than equal to a somewhat feeble constitution and until his strength utterly failed, never, for a moment, did his effective, but unonbtrusive energy relax. He possessed a mild and amiable disposition which endeared him to every member of his parish and secured for him a respect co-extensive with his acquaintances. He had not a single enemy, for he never gave offense. In sickness he was a warm sympathizer - in sorrow, a soothing friend. As a minister he seemed fully to realize the responsibilities of his office and his earnest and effective appeals will not soon be forgotten. In his counsels he was temporate and judicious, in his trials patient and enduring. He was a man whose excellent virtues were visible on every action -- who practiced all the good he taught. The anticipation of his death produced a shadow-- its realization has brought a cloud which may not soon disperse. To his church the affliction is most trying, for, just now, it seems to "stand alone with Heaven." And though we may not see "the wherefore of this chastening", still "we knew the blow hath pity in it and must bear its hard inflection for the boundless good that waits upon its smarting." Manitowoc Herald, Oct. 14, 1854

OSCAR THOMPSON (d. 1904) Almost Certain That Oscar Thompson Met His Death Sunday. Little doubt now remains but that Oscar Thompson, who has been missing from his home since Sunday night, met his death in the river. The investigation made by officers has brought no results, no clew to the missing man having been revealed. It is believed that Thompson was suffering from mental derangement at the time he departed from his home and that a fear, which had long been entertained, that he was afflicted with consumption, prompted him to self- destruction. As soon as possible the river will be dragged. Adolph Wilda, who was going to his work at J. Hall's at about 6:40 a.m. noticed a suspicious looking object in the water. He called Policeman Anton Trochell, who investigated and discovered the badly decomposed body of a man. Trochell immediately notified Coroner Meany and Justice of the Peace Markham, and then empanelled the following jury: Oscar Lindholm, George Schadeberg, Frank Heffernan, Peter Rugowski, P.A. Miller and Peter Endries. The jury viewed the body at the riverside and the body was then transferred to Frazier's undertaking establishment. Later in the morning Mrs. Thompson visited the establishment and identified the body as that of her husband by the clothes and by certain scars. She said that a short while previous to his disappearance he had acted queerly. He had failed to recognize her and had done such things as throwing the rug into the stove, etc. At the inquest held in Justice Marham's office at 2 p.m., Mrs. Thompson gave the same testimony and stated positively that the body was that of her husband. The jury rendered a verdict of accidental drowning. The body was buried late Tuesday afternoon. ELEANORE MARIE (ZAPEL) THOMSEN Eleanore Marie (Zapel) Thomsen peacefully left her earthly home at 1608 S. 18th St., Manitowoc, on Wednesday, April 12, 2006. "My parents, Leone E. (Klemp) and George C. Zapel welcomed me into this world on May 7, 1926, in Chicago. Three of us children, brother, Russel and sister, Georgene Pearson, grew up in the Chicago area, in a close and Christian home. On Aug. 9, 1947, Richard and I were married at United Lutheran Church, Oak Park, Ill. A marriage richly blessed by a loving family of three daughters: Louise (Lon) Horton, (children Beckie and James); Nancy (Jim) Neumeister, (children Gwendolyn and William); son: Thomas (Barb) Thomsen, (children Hans, Chris and Nils). Manitowoc became our hometown in the early 1950's; our second home was First Lutheran Church on North 8th Street where I loved to be a member of an even larger "family." My friends were many and I loved them all; thank you one and all for making my life so full and beautiful." For those who knew her, you surely remember her ever-present smile. Her family always came first, teaching us love, forgiveness, tenderness and compassion; here and there ending with a bible verse spoken or written. Lifelong activities all centered around her church: leadership in Cradle Roll, Prayer Chain, Missionary for a Day, Christmas programs, Vacation Bible Study, Snip & Sew and Children's Books. Sunday school was as important as she taught the little ones for over 25 years. Growing in her faith was important to her as witnessed in her participation in Bethel Bible Studies, LDR, Church Circle functions, or new member class orientation. Even with all of this, there was time for building and uplifting the total family at the North 12th Street home. We could go on and on; Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, hospital visitation, nursing home visits; and what it all says - she was a servant of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Eli most loved the individual moments rather than large gatherings. In those one to one times, love was shared and faith expressed. In accordance to Eli's wishes, there will be no memorial service. If you wish, memorials may be given in honor of Eli and to the glory of the God she served all of her life to: First Lutheran Church, 521 N. 8th St., Manitowoc, WI 54220. EDWARD THORISON (d. 1923) FUNERAL OF ALD. THORISEN(sic) HELD HERE ON MONDAY Had Premonition of Death When He Left 4 Weeks Ago Funeral services for the late Edward Thorisen, announcement of whose death at Rochester, Minn., yesterday came as a great shock to the community, will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at 2 o'clock from St. Paul's Lutheran church, the Rev. O.K. Espeseth officating. The Masonic order will have charge of the service at the grave at Evergreen. The body of Mr. Thorisen will arrive from Rochester at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning and will be escorted by Frank E. Diebert, head of the Masonic order who left for that city last evening to take charge of the remains and bring them to this city. The body will be met by city officials who will attend the funeral in a body Monday. Had Premonition of Death. That Mr. Thorisen had a premonition that he would not return from Rochester alive, was learned today from associates in the city council whom he advised of his plan for an operation. On the day previous to his departure Mr. Thorisen while in conference with one of his committees told his colleagues that it was probably the last time he would meet with them and feelingly expressed the appreciation of the kindly relations which had been enjoyed. Later however, after the operation at Rochester, Mr. Thorisen had been more hopeful and on Thursday a letter written by Mr. Thorisen advised his family that he was to leave the hospital and was planning an early return home but intended to visit a sister at St. Paul en route. This would indicate that death was due to a sudden heart attack superinduced by complications suddenly developed. Unusual Record as Official Mr. Thorisen enjoyed an unusual record as a city official, one which is probably unequaled by a municipal officer of any city. Elected to the council in 1905, Mr. Thorisen served continuously as a member of that body for twelve years and during the entire period, he never missed a meeting of the city board. After a three year retirement, he was again elected two years ago and re-elected last spring, and maintained his record of constant attendance up to the time he left for Rochester three weeks ago. On one occasion several years ago Mr. Thorisen underwent an operation of minor nature but insisted on attending the regular meeting of the council. During his service as a member of the council, Mr. Thorisen had been honored on numerous occasions by election as president of the council, a position which he held at the time he was stricken down. He served on many important committees and had been especially interested in harbor improvement work and in the perfecting of efficiency of the fire department, much of the modern equipment and improvement of this department having been accomplished during the time he served as chairman of the fire and water committee. Born in Norway Born in Norway April 13, 1867, Mr. Thorisen was 56 years of age at the time of his death. His family located here when he was four years old, his father being a carpenter. Later the family moved to Decorah, Iowa, for a number of years and later returned here where Mr. Thorisen apprenticed as a moulder, learned his trade and worked at the Smalley and Richards plants. Thirteen years ago he became associated with the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry company and was with that concern up to the time of his death. Mr. Thorisen's mother died when he was twelve years old and his father, who in his later years, made his home at Webster, S.D., died about two years ago. Mr. Thorisen visited his father at Webster only a short time before the latter's death, it having been his first visit with him in twenty years. Mr. Thorisen is survived by his wife, who was Rose Chakoski previous to their marriage on August 27, 1892, and by one son, Clifford, of this city. Two brothers Evan, of Florence, S.D. and James of Wallace, S.D., and two sisters, Mrs. Inga Gunderson of Webster, S.D. and Mrs. Peter Jacobson of St. Paul, also survive him. Served With Old Co. H. Enlisting with the old national guard unit, company H. of this city in 1889, Mr. Thorisen served with the company for seven years, and in 1894 was elected second lieutenant when Capt. William Abel was in command of the company and C.A. Groffman was first lieutenant. He was a member of Manitowoc lodge No. 65, F. and A.M., and of Manitowoc chapter No. 16 Royal Arch Masons and was also a member of the local camp., Order of Maccabees. Mr. Thorisen was a member of the Iron Moulders' union, local branch and also a member of St. Paul's Norwegian Lutheran church. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis.
