FRANCES TADYCH (d. 1930) DIES AS CAR IS FORCED OFF ROAD YOUNG GIRL IS BADLY CRUSHED, DRIVER UNHURT Frances Tadych, 23, Lingers For Several Hours After Mishap on Highway 141 Crushed and mangled to an extent seldom witnessed by physicians treating automobile accident victims, Miss Frances Tadych, 23 year old local girl, died at the Holy Family hospital at 10 o'clock today as a result of the injuries she sustained when the car in which she was riding was forced off the road on Highway 141, a short distance south of the juncture of Highways 31 and 141, at 12:30 o'clock this morning. Miss Tadych's companion and driver of the automobile, Isadore Duveneck, 20, was practically unhurt with the extent of his injuries being limited to minor scratches on the face. He spent the night at the hospital but was able to return to his home this morning. (snip) (2 paragraphs describing the accident not transcribed) Aid is Refused Efforts to halt motorists proceeding in both directions failed several times as Duveneck sought to stop them when it was apparent that Miss Tadych was seriously injured. Finally after several cars had passed, one was halted but the occupants noticing the condition of Miss Tadych, refused to take her to the hospital because they said, the upholstery in the car would become marked from the bleeding wounds. Later Leo and Sylvester Hablewitz, neighbors of the Duveneck boy, appeared at the scene and drove the two injured persons to the city and hospital. (snip) Miss Tadych was conscious only for a brief period after the accident, recognizing members of the immediate family when she was first brought to the hospital room but later lapsing into unconsciousness from which se (sic) never revived until her death. An examination revealed that an arm was broken, there was a compound fracture of the left leg, the pelvis was split open and she was bery badly cut by glass. No Inquest Coroner W.G. Kemper declared at noon today that he doubted if an inquest would be held as the death was the result of an apparent accident. Names of drivers at the scene immediately before the accident were not learned and it was doubted if an inquest would result in authorities securing any additional information, he said. Miss Tadych is survived by her father, Henry Tadych of 1215 North Water street and seven brothers, Carl and Alex of Milwaukee; John, Robert, Henry, Frank and Edward of Manitowoc. She was a graduate of the Manitowoc high school with the class of '28 and has lived in Manitowoc since her birth on August 20, 1910. It is reported that Miss Tadych was soon to have been a bride, but no confirmation of the report was obtained. Tadych was shot through the back, the bullet penetrating the body and striking the heart. Irwin Lemke, aged 14, residing at 1314 S. Tenth street, a companion of Tadych on a hunting trip Sunday, was the boy in whose hands the gun exploded and the youth is seriously ill from the shock of the tragedy, which happened on the Lake Shore road, south of the city, while the two boys, with a party of seven were returning from a hunting trip. Report of the accident reached the sheriff's office in a telephone message and Sheriff Pellet, with Coroner Falge visited the scene and took charge of the body which was brought to the city. Cigarette Cause of Tragedy? A cigarette is said to have been responsible for the tragedy which ended the life of Young Tadych. According to statements made ot the authorities by members of the party Lempke was carrying Tadych's gun and had stopped in the roadway to light a cigarette holding the gun on his arm as he struck a match and the movement of the body caused the discharge of the weapon. Tadych, who was some feet ahead, received the bullet in the back and fell to the ground, mortally wounded, death resulting almost instantly. Examination of the wound showed that the bullet penetrated the heart of the dead boy. Inquest is Ordered-- District Atty. Healy, following investigation of the affair, ordered an inquest which has been called for Tuesday morning. From statements made by eye witnesses of the tragedy there appears to be no question but that the gun was discharged by accident but an inquest was deemed advisable in the case. It is said that Lemke and Tadych had not been together during the day but that a party of seven met on the return home, others in the party being Paul, John and Joseph Reiderer, Charles Kaufman and Thomas Dirkman, who will be summoned as witnesses at the inquest. The accident happened about two miles south of the city. Lempke Told Gun Was Loaded- It is said that there were but two guns in the party of seven boys. Lempke is reported to have asked Tadych to permit him to carry the gun owend by the dead boy and the weapon was turned over by Tadych with a warning to Lempke to be careful as it was loaded. The boys were all close together until Lempke is said to have stopped to light a cigarette or wipe his face, the latter statement being made by some of the witnesses, when Tadych and the others preceded Lempke some distance, when the gun exploded. Following the accident the boys hastened to neighboring farm houses for assistance and word was sent to the city of the tragedy. Sheriff Pellet was notified and with the coroner visited the scene to investigate the boys of the party returning to the city with the officers. Tadych's body was taken to the Frazier Bros. Morgue and will be viewed by the coroner's jury before burial. The wound which caused death is in the back, the left of the vertebrae and a hole nearly a half inch in diameter was torn in the back. Tadych is a son of Joseph Tadych, residing at Ninth and Buffalo street and had been employed in the city when not attending school. He is survived by his parents, several sisters and brothers. The body was removed to the home late this afternoon and the funeral will be held from there. Irwin Lempke, the lad in whose hands the gun exploded, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lempke, S. Tenth street and boy and parents are prostrated by the tragedy, in which he so unfortunately participated. The inquest in the case will be held tomorrow morning at 9 and it is believed will exonerate Lempke from blame in the matter by returning a verdict of accidental death. The accident is a terrible one and to be deeply deplored. Manitowoc Daily Herald, December 16, 1912 P. 1 ********* [bur. 12-18-1912/cause: accidental discharge of gun]

ROBERT TAYLOR (d. 1879) On Thursday night last, a man named Luebke saw the body of a man floating in the lake near the creek about half ways between this city and Two Rivers. He went for assistance and on his return, the body was washed ashore. It was brought to this city that night and an inquest held. The man had nothing in his pockets but a large jackknife. He was about 38 years old, good looking and muscular. His hands and arms were plentifully tattooed, each hand having an anchor on the back, one arm having the initials R.M. ad R.T. and a mermaid. There were many surmises as to who the drowned man was and as how he was lost, but not till Saturday evening was curiosity gratified. The drowned man was a sailor on the schooner Glad Tidings, which was loaded with cedar ties at Ahnapee. When off Two Rivers Point the heavy sea washed off a portion of her deck load, and with it the man whose body was found. His mates heard his cries for help but were unable to render any, and he soon yielded to his fate. His name was Robert Taylor, an Irishman, and aged 38 years. He leaves two daughters at Liverpool but his wife is dead. He has no relatives in this country. The body was placed in a neat coffin by the city authorities and kept until Monday, when it was interred in Evergreen Cemetery. Manitowoc Pilot, April 17, 1879 P. 3

He caught the last streetcar back to Manitowoc and got off at 13th St. However, he never reached home and remained missing despite all efforts to find him. It was feared he might have become confused upon leaving the streetcar, went in the wrong direction and fell into the river. This possibility was dismissed as unlikely because he was a long time resident and knew the streets. However, because he remained missing, a search of the river was begun yesterday and his body was soon found. Wilhelm Tech was 51 and a tanner by trade. He has lived alone ever since his wife died 3 yrs. ago. Der Nord Westen, 02 Oct. 1902 ******* [cause: drowning] [William]

CHRIST H. TEGEN C.H. TEGEN, ARCHITECT, AND BUILDER OF COUNTY'S NEW COURT HOUSE DIES TODAY IN HOSPITAL Death of Mr. Tegen Occurs Just Twelve Weeks to Day, from that of His Wife. Is Last of Men Identified with Building of Court House a Few Years Ago Christian H. Tegen, well known architect and builder of the new Manitowoc county court house, passed away at the Holy Family Hospital at 5 o'clock this morning, Mr. Tegen's death occurring just 12 weeks to a day after that of his wife who passed away on December 23. News of the death of Mr. Tegen was not unexpected as for some time past his condition had been such as to afford no hope of recovery. He was removed to the hospital ten days ago from the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.J. Healy, where he had been cared for following the death of Mrs. Tegen. His condition had grown steadily worse and early this morning the end came. Mr. Tegen was 63 years of age and had been a resident of this city for over twenty years. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, and came to Wisconsin thirty five years ago, residing at Milwaukee before locating in this city. For years, Mr. Tegen was engaged in business as an architect and super- intended the erection of many business buildings and homes in the city, the new court house and the addition to the present Teitgen block being among the important contracts which he directed. Owing to failing health Mr. Tegen retired about a year ago and since that time had been an invalid. Three months ago Mrs. Tegen became ill and died shortly after being taken to the hospital, her life being sacrificed to care of her husband during his illness. Mr. Tegen is survived by three children, Mrs. J.J. Healy and Miss Paula Tegen, of this city and one son, Robert Tegen, of Portland, Ore. Decedent was a member of the Elks lodge and the funeral Monday from the Healy home on Marshall street will be under the auspices of the local lodge of Elks. Few men of the city were better known than Mr. Tegen and he enjoyed popularity among a large circle of friends to whom he was familiarly known as "Chris." The death of Mr. Tegen removes the last of those identified with building of the new courthouse ten years ago, every member of the building committee having passed away. JOHAN TEGGE Last Saturday morning the telegraph brought news of the death of John Tegge, until a week previous a resident of this city, at Howard Junction, Ill., he having died from the effects of injuries sustained by being run over by a train of cars. Tegge, a young man nearly 25 years of age, had left this city on Tuesday of last week to find employment, and was walking toward Rockford, on the railroad track, when the accident happened. It seems he heard the train coming, but endeavored to cross the bridge some 16 feet long ahead of the train, but slipping, fell lengthwise of the track and between the rails, and some part of the engine struck him on the head, fracturing the skull. He was not mangled, and when picked up it was thought that no fatal injuries had been sustained. This occurred at 7 in the evening and he lived until midnight. His remains reached the city by express on Monday morning and were buried in the afternoon. The unfortunate young man was a son of William Tegge, well known here as a respectable, hard-working citizen, and his sudden death is a sad blow to his relatives and friends. In crossing, Tager tripped and fell on the bridge between the rails in such a position that the wheels of the cars could do him no injury. He was struck on the head and had his skull fractured. WILHELMINE TEGGE SUICIDE OF A GIRL-On Sunday evening last, about the hour of nine o'clock, a young girl named Wilhilmina Tage (sic), aged nearly sixteen years, jumped into the Manitowoc river about a quarter of a mile above Jones' Mill, and willfully drowned herself, under circumstances most appaling (sic) and lamentable. Notice being given to Justice Sibree of the occurrence, he summoned a jury to make an inquest concerning the death of the deceased. The Justice and Jury, consisting of P.J. Blesch, Joseph W. Thomes, Michael Mahoney, Charles Korten, Jere. Crowley, and John Robinson, immediately repaired to the house of the father of the deceased, where the following facts were developed on the inquest. Late in the afternoon of the day above mentioned three half grown young men-one named Bates, another Wegfarth and the third called Bill (the last works in the ship-yard,) went to the vicinity of the deceased's home and enticed her and another girl to go into the small pines with them. The five went off together, but were followed at a short distance by two lads about twelve years of age each, and each brother to the girls. The lads kept on the track of the parties for some time, when one of the three above named came to them and offered them a trifle of money to go back. The little boys took the bribe and returned, and about the same time the girl whose name is not mentioned above, returned to the home of deceased-the latter refusing to go with her. It was now nearly dark, and the parents anxious to preserve their child from further corruption and sin, went, together with the two lads and girl spoken of, in search of their wayward first-born. They searched for some time without success, but after a time a dog that went with the father dislodged the party from a pine thicket not far from the river. The father took after the young scoundrels who thus before his eyes he found debauching his daughter-they and the girl ran in opposite directions. The mother encountered the girl near the road, where she took off her bonnet and threw it on the ground, and went straightway toward the river. Her mother called her to come back, but on she went. The two lads and the other girl tried to catch but she kept in advance of them all and reaching the river bank she went down the steep declivity in haste till she reached the water's edge, and there she stopped: deliberately took off her hoop-skirt; took the net off her head, and the comb out of her hair, and threw them on the ground. By this time the boys had gone down the bank, and had got within ten feet of her, but she forbade them coming near her at their peril. And just then, when the unhappy mother had reached the bank of the stream, with her eyes full upon her erring daughter, this rash, thoughtless, heedless, unfortunate girl, with curses on her lips, and anger in her heart-with the eye of God and the light of the pale moon upon her, took one fearful, fatal leap into the deep engulfing stream, and with a loud splash beneath the surface of the waters. The water closed over her, and nothing but the circle on the face of the stream indicated the place of the suicide. The father of the unfortunate girl arrived too late to be of any assistance. The body was not recovered till the next day about 10 o'clock in the forenoon, near the place where she jumped in. An examination by Dr. Balcom disclosed the fact that on taking the fearful leap she clenched her teeth and took in little or no water. The jury in accordance with the above facts, brought in a verdict of willfull suicide by drowning. The verdict of the jury is according to the facts in the case, but is there no lesson to be taught those three young scamps who preliminarily brought about the circumstances that terminated so fearfully to the poor, unfortunate suicide. We direct the public eye toward them, and should they be caught at such work again we hope some one will give them their deserts. Manitowoc Pilot, June 22, 1866 P. 1 ********* (Wilhelmine Car. What Mom Took Most often when we think of Mom We think of what she's given The softness of a loving touch. A gentle guide for living; A nightly tip-toe in a room, An understanding look. But sometimes when we think of Mom We think of what she took She took a child and taught it how To live this life with pride She took those kindergarten tears, And kept them all inside She took the hands that longed to hold Her child and not let go Used them to push her child along, The way, to thrive and grow Took time to do some other things Like sew, clean and cook, And never thought to ask for thanks For all the things she took. Thanks Mom. Herald Times Reporter, January 26, 1999
