JOHN WESEMAN Last Friday the body of a man was discovered floating in the river near Schuette's Mill, Manitowoc. The authorities were notified and the body taken from the water. It prove to be that of John Weseman, a man about 47 years of age and very much addicted to strong drink. The city council of Manitowoc have frequently forbidden saloon keepers to give and sell him any liquor, but some way he managed to satisfy - partially at least - his craving for alcholic drink. His death may have resulted from accident or it may have been suicide. Manitowoc Co. ESTHER WESTOVER Manitowoc Woman Killed In Accident Car Driven by Mrs. Westover Runs Into Tree Two Sons Are Injured in Crash on North Side A 36-year-old Manitowoc housewife was killed and her two sons injured in an accident Friday afternoon near Woodrow Wilson Junior High School on the city’s north side. Pronounced dead upon arrival at Memorial Hospital was Mrs. Esther Westover, 36, of 1109 Park Row Blvd., who suffered severe head and chest injuries. Under treatment at the same hospital are her sons, Thomas, 16, and William, 9. Thomas suffered a broken left ankle and right wrist while William had a broken left leg and a fractured jaw with his front teeth knocked out. Pinned Beneath Steering Wheel. City police said the accident occurred shortly before 5:45 p.m. when a 1955 model two door sedan driven by Mrs. Westover crashed head on into a tree in the 1190 block of North Ninth Street. She was pinned underneath the steering wheel and was freed by city police and fire department members using crow bars and other tools. The two boys were apparently riding in the back seat. According to the police report, Mrs. Westover had been eastbound on Waldo Boulevard and turned left onto Ninth Street at a reportedly high rate of speed. The car struck the east curb after going out of control and then veered to the west side where it jumped the other curb and plowed into the tree. The front end of the car was demolished. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said Mrs. Westover was on the way to a north side supermarket to purchase some meat for a fry out with neighbors. Prior to the accident, Doctor Teitgen said she had a disagreement with her husband and 16 year old son over the latter’s driving privileges. Mrs. Westover, an adjutant in the Manitowoc County Civil Air Patrol, had taken part in the Mc_____ in Manitowoc and in similar observances at Mishicot earlier in the day… Doctor Teitgen indicated that no inquest would be held into Mrs. Westover’s death. Mrs. Westover, the former Esther Polivka, was born in the city Oct. 17?, 1921, daughter of Louis J. and Mayme Oswald Polivka. She was married to Wayne Westover Nov. 24, 1940. HERBERT C. WESTPHAL EXTRA! Westphal, Son Reported Missing on Florida Flight Pland Had Landed at Owensboro, Ky.; CAA Starts Search Terre Haute, Ind.-A light plane carrying Herbert C. Westphal and his son Richard, of Manitowoc, Wis., was reported missing Thursday, en route to Lake Worth, Fla. Civil Air Patrol planes immediately began an area wide search, covering several states. Westphal, 47, is the owner of Westphal's hardware store on North Eighth Street in Manitowoc. He and his son, 13, left the Manitowoc Municipal Airport at 4 a.m. Wednesday for a flight to their winter home in Florida. According to the Civil Aeronautics Administration headquarters here, Westphal made radio contact with the Terre Haute airport Wednesday morning. His plane, a four-passenger Piper Cub, reportedly landed for refueling later at Owensboro, Ky. Contact with the plane was lost after it left that field. Louis Kakuk, manager of the Manitowoc airport, said the flight to Lake Worth would normally have been made in 12 to 13 hours, with at least two stops for refueling. Westphal, of 2230 Lakeshore Blvd., was recently named president of the Manitowoc Pilots Association. He had made several flights to his summer home before this. Mrs. Herman Berndt, a sister, and his mother, Mrs. Bertha Westphal who makes her home with Mrs. Berndt at Fond du Lac, also survies him. Manitowoc Herald News, Saturday, February 28, 1925 P.2 ********** FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN MICH. Mr. H. F. Westphal, a teacher in the Milwaukee Vocational School from 1917 to 1924, died suddenly Thursday morning, February 26 at his home at Ypsilanti, Mich. He had been ailing several months. Mr. Westphal was born forty-eight years ago in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He graduated from the Manitowoc High School, Milwaukee Normal School, Bradley Polytechnic Institute and took technical courses elsewhere. In his early adult life he taught in rural elementary and high schools. For a number of years he was in the United States civic service in the department of internal revenue. He left this work upon the invitation of the school to join its staff. He resigned last June to engage in a business enterprise in Ypsilanti, Mich. Mr. Westphal was a capital student, a natural mechanic and a good teacher. He had an inventive turn of mind and was the owner of several patents. An automatic damper and a blackboard tri-square are among his inventions. When not much more than a lad, he constructed an induction coil that threw a spark of from six to eight inches. For years he had a work shop and a laboratory in his basement and later transferred it to a special two story building that he erected in the rear of his house, where he had an array of lathes and other hand and power driven machinery and apparatus used exclusively for experimental work. Mr. Westphal was industrious and thrifty. Personally, Mr. Westphal was a likeable man, rather determined and inflexible in his views at times; somewhat impulsive, but sincere, loyal, conscientious, dependable, generous and of sterling character. His wife died a few years ago. He remarried only a short time ago. His wife and two daughters, Eunice and Ruth, his mother and his sisters survive. His daughter, Eunice, graduated from the Milwaukee Normal school last June and is now teaching. Ruth is a freshman in the high school. Both are talented young women. Mr. Westphal was buried Monday at Manitowoc, the city where he spent his boyhood days. I knew Mr. Westphal during all his life. In fact, so far as I recall, he was my first playmate. The Westphal home adjoined our own. During all the years that I have known him he has been a boy and a man of irreproachable character, clean in his habits, loyal to his friends, a good son, a good father and a good husband. W.C. OTTO W. WEYER (d. 1955) Faulty Steering Gear Is Blamed in Weyer Death Recreation Center Operator Thrown Out of Vehicle Otto W. Weyer, 33 (photo), of Rt. 1, Manitowoc, was fatally injured when his jeep ran out of control, threw him in a ditch and rolled over him at 5 p.m. Friday on a town road about two miles north of Newton, county traffic police reported. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said Weyer died within a few minutes after the mishap. He suffered a skull fracture, broken arm, a broken neck and a crushed chest. Faulty steering gear was blamed for the fatality. County traffic police said Weyer was driving home from work when the pin in the center steering arm dropped out causing him to lose control of the jeep. It careened into the ditch, threw the driver out and crushed him on a rock. The coroner said, "It must have rolled over him at least twice. He wouldn't have been crushed like that if it hit him just once." According to Dr. Teitgen, Weyer had the jeep in a garage a few days earlier complaining that the steering apparatus wasn't working right. Seventh 1955 Fatality The coroner pronounced Weyer dead at the accident scene. He became Manitowoc County's seventh auto fatality of 1955. A veteran of World War II, serving with the Ninth Armored Division. Weyer had developed property he owned adjoining Hartlaub Lake into an all-season recreation center Sportsway, arranging for sports car racing, and facilities for fishing, picnics and skiing had been completed within the last couple of years.
