ROLAND WOLF From Der Nord Westen, 09 Apr. 1903: A sad accident occurred Wed. morning in the residence of Mrs. Gustav Mueller here. Mrs. Adolph Wolf from Milwaukee, Mrs. Mueller’s daughter, is here on a visit. Mrs. Wolf’s 4-yr. old son, while playing in the kitchen yesterday morning, fell into a tub of boiling water and suffered severe burns. Medical help was called immediately and everything was done to ease the child’s pain. The little boy remains in critical condition and the doctors have not yet been able to express any hopes for his recovery. ********* From Der Nord Westen, 16 Apr. 1903: Last week we reported the burns suffered by 4-yr. old Roland Wolff of Milwaukee. We now have to report that the little grandchild of Mrs. Gustav Müller died of those burns at 10 p.m. Wed. evening last week. The child was buried Sat. afternoon in the local cemetery. ******** CHILD'S BURNS FATAL Little Roland Wolfe Dies as Result of Accident that Befell Him. LIVED BUT SHORT TIME. Suffered Intensely from Terrible Injuries-Sad Termination to Visit of Milwaukee Family in this City. Death resulted from the terrible burns which three-year old Roland Wolfe suffered Wednesday when he fell into a tub of scalding water at the home of Mrs. Gustave Mueller where, with his mother he was a guest. The accident happened early in the day and for hours the child suffered intensely until death came to relieve him at 9:30 in the evening. It was at first thought that the injuries would not prove fatal, but every effort to save the little life was unavailing. The child was an only son of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Wolfe, of Milwaukee, and with his mother had been visiting at the Mueller home since last Thursday. Wednesday morning while playing about the kitchen the boy fell into a tub of scalding water that had been left standing on the floor and although rescued almost immediately, had been terribly burned about the body. Medical assistance was summoned and everything done to alieviate the sufferings of the child but to no purpose. The death of little Roland is peculiarly sad because of the circumstances surrounding and the sympathy of the community will be extended to the bereaved parents and family. Mrs. Wolfe is a daughter of Mrs. Mueller and was enjoying a pleasant and happy visit at home when the terrible accident occurred. Mr. Wolfe was notified at Milwaukee of the accident and arrived in the city Wednesday afternoon, a few hours before the death of the child. This is the second time within a few months that Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe have been called upon to mourn the death of a child, another having died shortly after birth. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon from the home of Dr. and Mrs. George Huwatchek, 1215 Marshal street. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, April 9, 1903 P.1

NICHOLAS WOLLMER Manitowoc Pilot, September 2,1864, Pg 1, Col 1: Funeral of Lieut. Wollmer. “The remains of the late Lieut. Wollmer, who was wounded recently before Atlanta, and subsequently died, reached here Tuesday morning on the Comet. We have not been informed as to the particulars of his death, but learn that it was quite sudden and entirely unexpected to his family and friends. The funeral took place from the residence of the deceased at four o'clock of the same day, and was attended by an immense concourse of people. The veterans of the 5th and 9th regiments now in town, commanded by Capt. Goodwin, constituted the escort, and with their arms revered, and their slow, solemn tread, keeping time to the mournful music of the fife and drum, they gave to the departed soldier a military burial. Among the officers who attended the last rites were Gen. Salomon, Lt. Col. Olmsted, Major Baetz, Captains Rankin, and Dumke, Lieuts. Murphy, Wimpf and Markham, besides nearly all of our prominent citizens. The German Singing Society was also in attendance and sung over the last resting place of their friend's remains. The late Mr. Wollmer was one of the earliest settlers of Manitowoc, and greatly contributed by his energy and good business qualities to the prosperity of the place. Until within the past three years he was proprietor and manager of a banking-house here; and his well known liberality and kindness to those with whom he had to deal was proverbial. Lieut Wollmer belonged to the 26th regiment Wisconsin volunteers. We have been requested to return thanks in the name of his wife and relatives to the veteran soldiers who took part in the procession, to the Sangerbund, and to the many kind friends who were with them to sustain and comfort in the hour of their deep affliction.” ******** Manitowoc Pilot, November 11, 1864: Headq'rs 26th Regt. Vol. Dear Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of the 12th of October, with draft for $123.00, presented by the officers of your gallant regiment. I accept the gift, not only because my deeply lamented husband, who since December 1863 did not receive any pay from the government, except a small amount which he drew, after he was wounded and a few days before his death, left me and his three little children in need and want; but I accepted it particularly with warm and hearty comrades, who served with him for two years, who fought by his side in so many battles for our dear bleeding country; for the reason that it comes from the brave men who amid the roar of the cannon, in the throng of the battle and the groans of the wounded and dying, have yet preserved a feeling heart for a poor widow and orphans, whom they are not acquainted with, but know that they exist, and that Lt. Wollmer was their supporter and protector. Gentlemen, receive my warm thanks, and may the God of Battles preserve you, and permit you, happier than my poor husband was to come home again to your dear wives and children; permit you to be received with that love you deserve, and may you enjoy for long, long time, the blessings of liberty and peace of our beloved country, which when it calls out her heroes among the first will be the officers of the 26th Regiment. Tendering to you again my sincere thanks I have the honor gentlemen to be Yours respectfully, Mrs. Nicholas Wollmer ******* The Banking House of N. Wollmer closed its doors yesterday. Green Bay, WI/cause: cerebral hemorrhage] ******** SOUTHSIDE MAN VICTIM OF HIGHWAYMAN IN CITY Anton Wolski(sic) Attacked While Driving on North Water Street and is Left on the Road Unconscious ROBBERY THE MOTIVE? ASSAILANT FRIGHTENED AWAY Assaulted by an unknown man on North Water Street last night, Anton Wolski, a well known South Side cigar manufacturer was thrown from his wagon and left unconscious in the roadway. The assailant, who is believed to have intended robbery of Mr. Wolski, fled at the approach of pedestrians who found Mr. Wolski and assisted him into his wagon. Mr. Wolski is confined to his home today as result of bruises which he sustained. Mr. Wolski had spent the day in the country making delivery of cigars and collections from his customers and it is believed that the assault was committed by some person acquainted with the movements of the victim and who expected to rob Wolski of his money. Driving down North Water street Mr. Wolski was attracted to a view of the shipyards and the floating dock which was lighted up and had stopped his horse for a second to secure a better view. Mr. Wolski had risen to his feet and was standing on his wagon when suddenly he was felled by a blow on the head for some blunt instrument, believed to have been a sand bag. Wolski did not see the approach of his assailant until the man was upon him and he turned to face the man, he received the blow which struck him at the left side of the head, tore a gash in the scalp and one ear. Wolski fell from the wagon to the roadway unconscious where he was found by pedestrians who reached the scene a few seconds later. Two ladies, approaching the scene and who heard the noise, hastened their steps and it is believed that this saved Wolski from robbery. If that was the motive of the assailant, Mr. Wolski carried a considerable sum of money on his person which was found intact and the man had evidently fled to escape detection. Wolski reached his home in a dazed condition and a physician was called to attend him. The police department was notified of the assault and are searching the city in an effort to identify the unknown man. Wolski was unable to furnish any description, not having seen the man. The assault was one of the boldest that has been attempted in the city in years. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Apr. 24, 1913 page 1

DOLLY FLORINDA WOOD WALDO DEATH CLAIMS ONE OF CITY’S OLDEST RESIDENTS TODAY Mrs. D.F. Waldo, 89, Passes Away at Her Home on North Fifth Street at Advanced Age this Morning In the death of Mrs. D.F. Waldo, which occurred at the family home on North Fifth street at 8:30 this morning, one of the city’s oldest residents passed to final rest. Mrs. Waldo was past 89 years of age at her death. The announcement of her demise brings keen sorrow to many older residents who knew her as a woman of high ideals, unbounded charity and hospitality. Mrs. Waldo, nee Dolly Florenda Wood, had been a resident of Manitowoc for sixty four years and for sixty one years had occupied the home where her death occurred today. She was born at Lebanon, Me., July 23, 1828, and came to Manitowoc in 1853, at that time coming here to visit her brother, the late Sylvester Wood. Two years later, on April 18, 1855, she was married to W.W. Waldo, who preceded her in death some years ago. Mrs. Waldo had continued her home here, her daughter, Miss Flora, devoting herself to the care of her mother. Despite her advanced age Mrs. Waldo enjoyed excellent health up to a few months ago when she began to fail and during the past few weeks her decline had been rapid. Even in her failing health, however, Mrs. Waldo was always pleased to welcome friends and her home, which was her Heaven, and her gracious hospitality was manifested until she was denied that happiness by weakness of her last illness. Mrs. Waldo is survived by four children, George E. of Chicago; Mark of Barstow, Fla.; Mrs. Edward Ross of Mansfield, Pa.; Miss Flora Waldo, this city. One half brother, Charles L. Wood, of Malden, Mass., also survives. Funeral services will be held from the late home Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. SYLVESTER A. WOOD One of our eldest residents, Mr. S.A. Wood, was released from many years of illness by his death Tuesday evening. For a long time Mr. Wood, who was known by almost every resident of our city, had suffered a gallbladder illness. Toward the end the pain was so unbearable that the doctors recommended an operation despite his advanced age and weakened condition. Several gall stones were removed, but the patient was unable to withstand the shock and died during the operation. S.A. Wood was born 14 January 1822 in Acton, Maine, and on 26 October 1849 arrived in Manitowoc where he has lived ever since. He filled many elective offices in the city and county, but was mostly known by everyone because of his service as agent for the firm of Hinkley & Allen. Mr. Wood never married and is survived by a sister here, Fran Waldo, with whom he lived for many years. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon. Der Nord Westen, 13 Aug. 1908 ********** S. A. Wood, one of the pioneer settlers of Manitowoc, died at the Holy Family hospital Tuesday night. Mr. Wood had been in poor heath for some time. He was taken to the hospital Monday and on Tuesday underwent an operation for gall stones from the effects of which he passed away at midnight. Mr. Wood wrote his own obituary notice previous to his death, which is as follows: "Mr. Wood was born January 14, 1822 at Acton, York Co., Maine, in which county he was educated academically, read law and resided until twenty-seven years of age when he came to Manitowoc county, arriving here October 26, 1849. After a few years of precarious vocation he engaged in the law and real estate business, having been admitted to the Manitowoc County Bar, April 26, 1858. Detesting the corrupt practices of politicians Mr. Wood was never politically ambitious and his public promotions were limited to those of village clerk, president and village postmaster. He regarded law as among the noblest of the learned professions-as one in which, with the requisite legal attainment, qualifications and moral integrity, a man may render greater, better and more valuable service to his fellow men in the way of uprightness, loyalty and good citizenship than usually result from the practice of most other professions. In short, he believed in the anomaly, "an honest lawyer" and, on that basis had a successful and honorable practice of a decade or so. But the character of most of the pioneer litigation, the trivial and revengeful causes from which most of it sprang and the usual expectation of most of the clients that a lawyer must expose and exhibit all the hatred and animosities which they cherished for their opponents, led to such a distate for the practice that he finally lapsed into a real estate business that continued in diminishing degree to the time of his death." Mr. Wood was a man of considerable ability, integrity and strong convictions. Strong-mindedness characterized him in all his business and social relations. He was a man of energy and took an active part in the affairs of the city in the early days. When Manitowoc was incorporated as a village in 1851 he was elected the first village clerk with George Reed as first president. Later he served as president for two years, 1859-60. He was the fourth postmaster of the city, retiring in 1857. For the past eight or ten years it was his custom to write a poem on his birthday, and he was able to write poetry. Mr. Wood never married but lived with his sister, Mrs. Waldo, who is the only surviving member of the family. He is also survived by two nephews, Mark and George Waldo, and two nieces, Mrs. Edward Ross of Mansfield, Penn., and Miss Flora Waldo of this city. The funeral will be held from the home on North Fifth street Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Manitowoc Pilot, August 13, 1908 ******** FRIENDS PAY TRIBUTE TO DEAD Funeral Services for Late S.A. Wood, Held From Home this Afternoon Funeral services for the late S.A. Potter of St. Paul's M.E. Church conducted the burial rites and interment was at Evergreen, a large cortege following the remains to their last resting place. Members of the County Bar Association of which Mr. Wood was the oldest member, attended the services in a body. Mrs. Paul Kellar and Miss Ethel Hensen rendered vocal selections, Mrs. Kellar, a solo, "Just For Today" and with Miss Hensen sang, "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Lead Kindly Light" as duets. The pallbearers were E. C. Nash, H. G. Kress, Edwin Schuette, Max Rahr, Ned Platt, Chicago and Edward Hamilton of Two Rivers. City and county officials attended the funeral. It seems that the clothing of the child was ignited from the stove during the absence of the mother and although everything possible was done to save it, the little sufferer lingered but about six hours when death put an end to its suffering. The child was twenty-one months old, a bright and sprightly little boy and quite a favorite of all. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., May 22, 1919

WILLIAM HENRY WOODIN From the Files of the Pilot - Fifty Years ago (1865) Died - In this village on Monday, July 17, 1865, William H. Woodin, aged 19 years, 3 months, son of Geo. N. and Phathusa Woodin. The deceased served in the hundred day service last summer and at the time of his death was a member of the 27th Regiment, having re-enlisted last fall. He was with his company in the capture of Mobile after which he was taken sick and removed to the hospital at New Orleans and from there to Madison. He returned home only a few days since to die among his parents and friends. Willie Woodin, as he was familiarly called, was the beloved of his friends, and the idol of his parents. He had nearly completed the period of his minority, and had almost reached that period of life so largely and impatiently waited for by every youthful aspirant for the conflicts and successes of life. But a mysterious Providence had ordained that he should never realize the glowing hopes of his youth! The Destroyer marked him for his own, and human skill nor earthly power could avert the blow. Frank in disposition, and manly in deportment, he readily won the confidence and esteem of all who knew him, and his friends are called to mourn in him the loss of an affectionate son, a kind brother, and generous companion. Had it hit forward there probably would have been no one left to tell the story as the transport was carrying ???? tons of high explosives. In France he went through a railroad ?, a rather frequent occurrence ? in which a large number were killed and injured. When the (illegible)…had been ordered to the front and in a few days more would have been actual service. Private Worel returned to this country before the holidays and has just received his discharge at Camp Harrison arriving home on the limited Saturday evening. He will again be associated with his father in the Worel Hardware company. Manitowoc Herald News, Monday, January 20, 1919 Page 5 ******* [d. 03/11/1948/age 52 yrs.]

BABY WOTRUBA INFANTICIDE. Last week a young girl about 18 years of age, named Katie Watruba (sic), came to the city from Cooperstown. She was on her way to Milwaukee to secure admission to some home where she might receive some assistance and hide a shame which threatened her. She visited her sister who lives in this city intending to remain a couple of days before going to Milwaukee. A physician on whom she called kindly informed her that she had no time to lose and that she should at once go where she might have proper care. On Thursday night the child was born. The poor girl was alone and when the child began to cry she attempted to stifle its screams by placing her hand over its mouth. She was crazed with fear and made desperate by the strait in which she was. The child was suffocated and she threw the body into an earth vault. There it was discovered the next day and on inquiry the whole facts were learned. An inquest was held on Monday and Tuesday before Justice Falge and on the girl’s own testimony the jury returned a verdict of death by suffocation. The girl charges a young man named John Fagan with being the father of the child. Through his advice she left for Milwaukee where the child might be safely delivered and cared for. There was no intention of child murder, but unforeseen circumstances left the poor girl friendless at a time of great trial. She acted on the impulse of the moment and without any conception of the crime she was perpetrating. The girl is still quite sick and so no arrests have been made. The law officers have a very unpleasant task to perform in her case as her guilt cannot be denied, but neither can sympathy for her forlorn condition be checked. Dayton was a beautiful man who selflessly gave of himself. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He was always full of kind words and only found the good in people, never the bad. We will miss his warm smile, hugs and kisses. He was always satisfied and happy with the simple things in life and never took a moment for granted. So many of our friends and family have asked what they could do for us … if we love instead of hate, compliment instead of criticize, be positive instead of negative, and find the good in each person we meet, then we will have passed around some of the goodness of Dayton. That will be the greatest gift of all. There are no words to express how much we will miss you Dayton, Dad and Grandpa. We love you so much! Manitowoc Herald Times, August 9, 1954 P. 2 ******* LEARNS OF AUNT HE NEVER KNEW HAD EXISTED Inquiry from West Reveals Relative to Local Man Through inquiries which have been received from Puente, Cal., Arthur Wyseman, of the law firm of Kelley & Wyseman, this city, may be in touch with relatives he never knew existed and since receipt of the messages, Mr. Wyseman has been putting in time investigating family records and tracing the family tree. The inquiry to the local attorney came from Mrs. Anna Wilken, of the California city, who says that she last heard from her brother Robert Wyseman in this city many years ago and has since lost trace of him and she requests that the attorney look him up. Robert Wyseman, the name given by the California women is that of Mr. Wyseman's deceased father, and he believes that the two identities are the same. Mr. Wyseman said today that he did not know that his father had a sister but that the facts developed in the investigation he has conducted as result of the inquiry, appears to establish that relationship with the California woman who is thus the aunt of the attorney.
