BYRON L. OAKLEY DEATH OF BYRON L. OAKLEY A telegram was received here yesterday morning announcing that Byran Oakley had departed life at Denver Colorado. Mr. Oakley was a young man in the prime of his life who resided during the greater portion of his existence in Manitowoc Rapids. He began his career as a school teacher and followed his vocation almost to the time of his death. He was one of the ablest and most successful teachers which the county has produced. Last fall he was engaged to teach the Antigo school but was unable to complete his term. He was married to Miss Veroque Sheldon a well known and successful teacher of this county last winter and contracted about that time a severe cold which finally developed into consumption and ultimately brought him to his grave. About a month ago accompanied by his young wife he sought the Sunny South hoping that it was not yet too late to ward off the full destroyer. The disease however was already too well developed and all attempts to shock its ravages proved futile. The trip in all probability accelerated, rather retarded its program. Mr. Oakley read law in the offices of Nash & Nash and Estabrook & Walker for a couple of years and was admitted to the bar a year ago last June. Had not his health failed him he would have opened a law office in Manitowoc in the near future. It is a long time since a death occurred in the county which was as generally lamented as his will be. He was acquainted all over the county and had warm friends wherever he was known. His sparkling and guileless wit, his genial manners and his light hearted and whole scaled nature endeared him to the aged and infirm as well as the young and the gay. Few men are gifted with as much natural ability and such an inexhaustible supply of wit as that indigenous in Mr. Oakley. He was a self made man in the true sense of the term and had he lived he would no doubt have attained an enviable eminence in his chosen profession, if he was not destined to reach a giddy height. If independence’s, originality, honesty and ability are the forerunners of success, then success was assured him. It seems like a harsh decree of fate that one so young and so brilliant should be hurled into the illimitable realms of eternity at the outset of a useful career. But the ordinations of fate are inscrutable and mortals must submit. On Wednesday morning the lonely funeral cortege left Denver and will probably reach here tomorrow, when all that is mortal of one of the brightest intellects which the county possessed will soon be enshrouded by the soil by which it was fostered, and laid away to mingle with its mother earth until the great day of judgment. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, July 19, 1883 ********** Byron Oakley will close his school in Newton this week and will devote this summer to study of law. HENRY PLOECKELMANN HENRY PLOECKELMAN SUICIDE AT HAYTON - A Veteran of the Civil War The Victim Of His Own Rash Act In Fit Of Dispondency First hanging crepe on the front door of his home as an announcement of his deed, Henry Ploeckelman hanged himself in his barn at Hayton Sunday forenoon about ten o’clock. Although he left no written explanation of his deed, it is supposed that mental trouble of which he has plainly been a victim was the cause. He was alone Saturday night and Sunday morning, his wife having gone to see her son, Adam Schwantz, at the Lime Kilns. Anton Miller of Hayton discovered the lifeless body. Passing the house, he saw the crepe and stopped to see what it meant. The house was empty, but when he extended his search to the barn he made the startling discovery that threw the little village of Hayton into the greatest excitement. It was known that Ploeckelman had exhibited evidences of mental disorder, but no one had any idea that he contemplated suicide. The last seen of him alive was at about nine o’clock Sunday morning by Peter Thiel who noticed him about the yard. The district attorney in place of the newly-elected coroner, who has failed to qualify, conducted an investigation of the tragedy, the result being the establish- ment beyond all doubt of the fact that Mr. Ploeckelman came to his death by his own hand. During the seven or eight years of his residence at Hayton Mr. Ploeckelman won the friendship of his fellow townsmen. He was a man of kindly nature, always ready to do anything within his power for his friends. For several years he carried the mail to the Hayton post office, discharging the duties of his post with fidelity. At the time of his death Mr. Ploeckelman was a little over 68 years old, he having been born at Basel, Germany, in 1842. In his youth he emigrated to America, settling on a farm near Branch, Manitowoc County, where his first wife died some years ago. He was married some eight years ago to Mrs. Schwantz of Hayton and removed to that village to live. Mr. Ploeckelman rendered his adopted country good service in the civil war. He was a member of Company E. 27th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and held membership in the Chilton GAR Post. Surviving are his widow, three sons and seven daughters. Two of his children, August and Mrs. Herman Guenther reside here, one daughter’s home is in Portland, Oregon, and the rest live in Manitowoc County. Short funeral services were held at Hayton Wednesday morning by Rev. W. A. Arpke of Chilton and the remains were taken by train that day to the old home in Manitowoc County for interment. Numbers of friends from Hayton and vicinity accompanied the funeral party. The members of the Jos. B. Reynold’s Post of Chilton attended the funeral in a body. Chilton Times, March 4, 1911

To them she stood for all that was beautiful and symmetrical in character. As the rose in its sweet perfection appeals to the heart of mankind, so did her personal beauty and sweetness of disposition affect the hearts of friends. A sad, fragrant memory to those who mourn today, she bloometh fair and strong in the garden of God. Interment took place Tuesday, the Rev. S.R.S Gray officiating. Regardless of the intense cold, a large number of friends including many from this city attended. AURELIA SHELDON DIED. SHELDON—At Branch, July 10, 1880, of consumption, Aurelia, wife of David Sheldon and daughter of Ann and the late Enoch H. Lawrence, aged 23 years, 3 months and 5 days. The deceased had lived among us from her earliest childhood and had endeared herself to many by the constant exhibition of those sterling qualities which constitute true womanhood. After the death of her father, not two years ago, she became the dependence and comforter of her widowed mother, and the judicious adviser of her younger brothers and sisters; married only eight months ago. She was called thus early from her husband's side to meet that dearly beloved father whose loss she mourned so sincerely. Her long and painful illness she bore with a patience and fortitude beautiful to behold, never once losing that thoughtfulness for others which was characteristic of her nature. Her life was short, as man measures it in years, but if measured by the kind and generous deeds it exhibited, it was long indeed, for it was replete with such, and its record will ever be carried to the hearts of loving friends as one of the beautiful things of earth. Sheldon, on Saturday. Mr. Sheldon lived for 50 years in Manitowoc county, making his home at the village of Branch, where he was prominent in local affairs. The death was due to an automobile accident, details of which have not as yet reached the city. A telegram received by Frank W. Meisnest of Branch, Wis., a friend of the family announced that the burial will take place at the village church upon arrival of the body Thursday afternoon. Mr. Sheldon was sixty seven years old and was born in Waterford, Wis. In 1850, the family took up their residence in Manitowoc county and Mr. Sheldon grew to manhood amidst the pioneer farm surroundings of Branch village. Of a manly and honest character he early gained the confidence of his neighbors and was trusted with local offices, among them that of town chairman and justice of the peace. Later he was a candidate for county treasurer on the republican ticket but was defeated at the primaries. Married to Miss Hannah Peterson, one child blessed their union, a son Mark, whose early death was an abiding sorrow with the bereaved parents. About ten years ago he took up his residence in Colorado where he lived in semi-retirement. Mr. Sheldon was a man of character and was known in the city through his service on the county board. Sturdy and straightforward he justified the confidence placed in him by his neighbors and was their trusted adviser on many occasions. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. P.J. WILHELM SPRINGSTUBE PIONEER OF CO. DIES AT HOME AT BRANCH. William Springtube (sic), aged 76, a pioneer resident of Branch, died at the home of his son, Herman, Sunday, after an illness of two weeks from pneumonia. Decedent came here 50 years ago and was one of the pioneer farmers of Manitowoc county and widely known. His wife died ten years ago and he is survived by two sons and two daughters, Herman and August and Mrs. Minnie Kuhlman and Mrs. Anna Schramm, all residents of the county. The funeral will be held at Branch Wednesday from the home. Manitowoc Daily Herald, January 10, 1916 P. 8 ********* STORY OF FORTUNE TELLER PREYED ON MIND OF BRANCH MAN, FATHER'S BODY EXHUMED Months after Death of Father, Son has Body Exhumed to Recover Collar Buttons which Belonged to Him and which he Had Given Undertaker in Preparing Body for Burial A fortune tellers story is said to have preyed upon the mind of Herman Springstube, Branch farmer, to so great an extent that four months after the burial of his father, the late William Springstube, the son insisted upon exhuming the body at the Branch cemetery Sunday to recover two collar buttons which he formerly owned and which he had given to the undertaker to be used in fastening the shirt worn by the dead man. The consent of members of the family was secured to the disinterring of the body and yesterday Undertaker Joseph Wattawa of the Urbanek & Wattawa Co., of the city, directed the work and removed the collar buttons and returned them to the son. The members of the family were present at the little cemetery at Branch when the body was taken up and new buttons placed in the shirt. Mr. Springstube, Sr., died on Jan. 9, this year, and the funeral was held a few days later. In preparing the body the undertaker found that there were no collar buttons with the shirt to be place on the corpse and the son, Herman volunteered two buttons from his own collection, and these were used. Since the death of his father the son has been in poor health and recently, it is said, was told by a friend who professes to be a fortune teller that unless he recovered the collar buttons which he had given to his father's body, that he might not recover. Ill and suffering under a nervous strain the young man was unable to put this prediction from his mind and it preyed so heavily upon him that a week ago he asked permission of other members of the family to have the body of his father exhumed to recover the collar buttons. Following the consent of relatives, Springstube came here and arranged to have the body taken up yesterday and Mr. Wattawa visited Branch and directed the work. The grave was opened and the casket raised and opened and Mr. Wattawa, with his assistants, removed the collar and buttons, later replacing them with others. The body was interred in the same gave. Mr. Wattawa says that the body was unchanged for its four months' interment. Report of the exhuming of the body at Branch was made to probate court where the estate of the late Mr. Springstube is in probate. No attempt was made to dissuade the son from having the body taken up as it was felt that the recovery of the buttons would relieve his mind upon which the fortune teller's story had made so great an impression as to affect his health. FRANK STIEBER Grief over the death of his wife several months ago, coupled with worry over business affairs which he had been unable to handle and which had resulted in appointment of a guardian for him, is believed to have prompted Fred Stueber(sic), an aged Whitelaw man, to take his own life. Stueber was found dead in his home yesterday, a victim of poison, self administered. Stueber had mixed a quantity of paris green in an earthen bowl and drank a portion of the mixture. The unfortunate man was found seated at the table in his home by neighbors who investigated when Stueber failed to visit his usual haunts for several days. The man was last seen Friday afternoon and it is believed that he had been dead since Friday night or Saturday morning. No inquest was held. District Attorney Brady and Coroner Falge after investigating deciding that there was no need of an inquest, the evidence of suicide being complete. Stueber was 65 and had resided at Whitelaw for years, being a mason by trade. He was the owner of a small home and an acre of land which he had disposed of following the death of his wife, but there was some d___ over the deed and a guardian had been named for Stueber and the matter was to have come up at the ____ of court. It is believed that worry over this coupled with grief over the death of his wife prompted the suicide. Mr. Stueber is survived by no immediate relatives, though step children of a former wife survive him. The burial will be held at Whitelaw. Manitowoc Daily Herald, May 29, 1917 P.1 ********* An Anna Stueber who died in 1917 is buried in the STUEBER family plot in St. Michael’s in Whitelaw so that would match the story. Maybe they were buried in separate cemeteries because St. Michael's is a Catholic cemetery? (1910 Cato census: Frank Stuever age 57; wife Anna age 63/this is probably them)

FRANK WATRUBA BROODING OVER ILL HEALTH AND DEATH OF HIS MOTHER, BRANCH MAN ENDS HIS LIFE Brooding over the recent death of his mother and a fear that his health had been undermined, Frank Watruba, a well known resident of Branch, ended his life last night by firing a bullet into his brain, the dead body being found by relatives who heard the shot from the yard. Wotruba used a 32 revolver and fired the bullet into his left temple. He was dead when found. Wotruba was about forty-eight years of age and a bachelor. His mother had died at the age of ninety-three recently and since that time Wotruba had lived alone. He had been ill for several months but was able to be out and about. Last evening a niece who assisted him had been at work and was in the yard attending to some (illegible). It is not probable that an inquest will be held as the case is undoubtedly one of suicide, according to reports of District Attorney Brady following an investigation. Wotruba is survived by three sisters, Mrs. August Springstube, Mrs. Fred Clemens of this county and Mrs. M. Wesley on Tomahawk and one brother Albert Wotruba of this county. The funeral arrangements have not been made. A husband, a father, brother, son and friend, with so many good qualities we must commend. Our emptiness is extremely hard to bare but with time will mend, with lots of prayer. Our love for him will never die, nor our memories as we wonder why? He's at peace and under God's care, And someday too, we'll all be there. We love you Chuck, Dad, Butch So long for NOW.
