BERTHA FISCHER ILLNESS FATAL TO CHILI FARM WOMAN Mrs. Bertha Fischer Dies at Charles Fischer Home Last Night Chili-(Special)-Mrs. Bertha Fischer, 78, died of old age complication shortly after 9 o'clock last night at the Fischer farm home, one mile west of Chili. She had been confined to her bed by illness for the past 11 weeks. Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Sunday from the home, followed by services at the Chili Evangelical church. The Rev. E. P. Manley will officiate and interment will take place in the family lot at Brillion. Because of the funeral there will be no worship service at the church Sunday. Mrs. Fischer, nee Rusch, was born at Rockland, Manitowoc county on Dec. 17, 1858, and was married there to David William Fischer on March 7, 1879. After their marriage, the couple moved to a farm at Brillion, where Mr. Fischer died on June 13, 1915. On Aug. 1, 1915, Mrs. Fischer came to Chili to make her home with her son, Charles, and daughter, Elsie, on the present farm home which was purchased by Charles Fischer in the fall of 1914. Other surviving relatives include three stepchildren, Mrs. Henry Strehlau, and Mrs. Henry Schinner, Peshtigo, and Henry Fischer, Brillion; and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Haese, Brillion; Mrs. Fred Brandt, Fond du Lac; and Mrs. William Brandt, Wiley, Minn. A stepdaughter, Mrs. William Ziegahn, and two brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. Fischer was a member of Immanuel's Evangelical church and of the Evangelical Ladies aid society. CHARLES A. FISCHER Chili -- (Special) -- Funeral services were held this morning at 9:30 o'clock in Immanuel Evangelical Church for Charles A. Fischer, 60, who died Saturday at the Neillsville Hospital after an illness of several months. The body was taken to Manitowoc County for burial in the family lot at Maple Grove cemetery. The Rev. S.A. Gutknecht officiated at the rites. Pallbearers were Alvin Voelker, Fred Emling, Phelps Spry, William Happe, Erwin Haslow, and Herman Montag. Flowers were carried by Mary Ellen Haslow, Ruby and Audrey Nelson, and Geneva Steffen. Charles August Fischer was born Feb. 1, 1884, in Manitowoc County, where he lived with his mother, Mrs. Bertha Fischer and his sister, Elsie, to a farm which they had purchased, a mile west of Chili. Mrs. Fischer died Aug. 20, 1936, and three years ago the son and daughter sold the farm and became residents of Chili. Surviving besides Miss Fischer, is a half-sister, Mrs. Henry Strehleu, Peshtigo. DAVID W. FISCHER Brillion News: David William Fischer died at his home in this city last Sunday at the age of 78 years. Decedent was born in Germany, coming to America in 1854 and settling at Fond du Lac. Early in the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and fought in defense of his adopted country for three years. After the war he moved to Maple Grove with his family. His first wife died in 1879 and he subsequently married to the sorrowing wife who now survives him. Three years ago he retired and came to this city to live and here he is known as an estimable, peaceable citizen and a good neighbor. He was a member of the Evangelical Association and funeral services were conducted by Rev. Sippel at the church in this city on Wednesday. Interment was in the cemetery near Kasson. Members of the GAR Post accompanied the body of their departed comrade to its last resting place. Besides the widow, there survive two sons, Henry of Maple Grove and Charles of Chili. EDWARD H. FISCHER Edward Fischer, who would have been 41 years of age today, died yesterday at the Holy Family hospital. He was brought to the hospital from his Maple Grove farm. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the Luecker funeral home in Brillion and at two oclock from the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed church (sic). Mr. Fischer is survived by the widow, the former Marie Allenbrach; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fischer of Maple Grove; four brothers, Fred, George and David of Maple Grove, Harvey of Taus; three sisters, Mrs. Carl Huchthausen and Mrs. M. EMILIE HEINRICH Mrs. Emilie Heinrich, (photo) 87, county resident for more than four score years and who in late years entertained guests attending her birthday parties with tales of pioneer days in Manitowoc county in Civil war times, died this morning in Maple Grove. She had been making her residence with a son, Arthur, on the homestead farm. Despite her advanced age Mrs. Heinrich was active until recently. She read a great deal and evinced interest in world events. Funeral services will be held Tueday at 1 p.m. from the Heinrich home and at 1:30 o'clock from the Evangelical church at Kasson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Heinrich, nee Emilie Schilling was born in Germany in 1852. When she was still a child her parents came to the United States, locating in Illinois. A few months later they move to Wisconsin and took up a homestead in Maple Grove. The hardships there were many and trying. For five years the family was without a stove or lamp. A fireplace served as both. Jacob Schilling, her father, bought 80 acres of land at $2 an acre and made shingles, which he took to Manitowoc to exchange for food and clothing. It took four days to make the trip. Meat was on the family board only when a wild animal was killed. The community's first cemetery was on the Schilling farm. Shortly before her marriage to Jacob Heinrich in 1868 she walked to Appleton, through the wilderness in the month of February, to visit a married sister in that city. Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich purchased the present farm site in Maple Grove, which has been in the family name since. Her husband was a Civil War veteran who took up farming after his return from the war. Ten children were born to the couple, of whom seven survive. Mr. Heinrich died in 1921. Survivors are four sons, Arthur, Christian and Charles of Maple Grove, Jacob of Appleton; three daughters, Mrs. Herman Freitag of Wayside, Mrs. Ben Nohr of Lark, Mrs. Clarence Peters of Breckinridge; sister, Mrs. Anna Barth of Marquam, Ore.; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. JACOB HEINRICH MAPLE GROVE CIVIL WAR VET ANSWERS TAPS Jacob Heinrich, pioneer of the Town of Maple grove (sic), died Sunday morning at the advanced age of eighty-three years. Death was due to a paralytic stroke and infirmities incident to old age. Deceased had made his home on the same farm for fifty-five years. He was a Civil War veteran and served throughout the conflict with the 12th Wisconsin Battery. In one of their many engagements he was seriously wounded. Following the close of the war and his discharge from the service he settled in the town of Maple Grove where in 1868 he was married to Miss Emile (sic) Schilling On February 10. The widow with seven children survive him. They are Christian, Arthur and Charley, all of Maple Grove, and Jacob of Seymour; Mrs. German Freitag and Mrs. Benjamin Nohr, of Morrison and Mrs. Clarence Peters of Wahpeton, North Dakota. There are also eighteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren in the family. FRANK E. KORB Frank Korb, one of the best known farmers of this vicinity died last Friday of spinal meningitis after an illness of brief duration. He had attained the age of 57 years and is survived by the wife, his aged mother, who resides in our city, and by three daughters, Lorena, Bertha and Ella, all at home on the farm about five miles north of Brillion. One brother, William, also survives him. The funeral took place on Tuesday, interment being on the Evangelical cemetery near Kasson, services being conducted by Re. Koten. A delegation of the Brillion Lodge of Mystic Workers, led by prefect john Gillis, participated in the obsequies, decedent being an esteemed member of the lodge. He was also a member of the local E.F.U. lodge. The funeral is said to have been one of the largest ever held in this section, Mr. Korb being widely known and very popular. He was a quiet, modest man of retiring disposition, but a genial nature and honest as the day is long. He never shirked an obligation, never betrayed a friend, a kind and loving husband and father. IDA KORB Mrs. Frank Korb, 76, nee Ida Krueger, died today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elmer Wolfmeyer on the homestead farm on Route 2, Brillion. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Luecker funeral home Brillion and at 2 o'clock from the Evangelical church at Kasson, the Rev. Philip Schneider officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Korb was born in Maple Grove in 1865 and in 1885 was married to Mr. Korb. They located on the farm now operated by the son-in-law and daughter. Mr. Korb died 28 years ago. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Wolfmeyer, of route 2, Brillion, Mrs. Henry Sieg, of Black Creek, Wis., Mrs. Jacob Lavrich of Sheboygan; sister, Mrs. Bertha Giese of Brillion; six grandchildren and one great- grandchild. ALBERT KRUEGER FUNERAL SERVICES FOR ALBERT KRUEGER HELD (SPECIAL TO Press-Gazette) FOREST JUNCTION, Wis.-Funeral services for Albert Krueger, 71, were held Friday afternoon at Emmanuel Evangelical church in the town of Maple Grove, with the Rev. W. L. Zeller conducting. The burial took place in the Maple Grove cemetery. The deceased was born in the town of Maple Grove in 1861. On attaining manhood, he went to Clark county, where he engaged in farming. Upon the death of his second wife, he was employed for a short time at Wrightstown, making his home later with relatives in the town of Maple Grove. He died last Tuesday evening at the home of a nephew, Charles Giese. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. August Giese of Brillion and Mrs. Frank Korb of the town of Maple Grove. CAROLINE SCHULTZ Mrs. Carrie Schultz whose death in Los Angeles on April 20, we reported last week, was born in Germany in 1861.(sic) She came to America in 1873 with her parents. She was married to Gust Schultz at Maple Grove but was widowed by the death of her husband at Sturgeon Bay many years ago. Later she removed to Los Angeles, Cal., where she has resided ever since. Only one son, Robert of our city survives her, also two sisters, Mrs. Anton Fritsch and Mrs. John Caflisch. The body of the deceased was brought from California for burial in the Evangelical cemetery at Kasson. The funeral took place on Tuesday, Rev. Koten conducting the services. FRANK A. SCHULTZ Frank Schultz, aged 28 years, passed away last Thursday night at the home of his brother Robert on a farm near Brillion, the cause of his death being consumption. Besides his brother, a mother survives to mourn his loss. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the late home of the departed, interment being at Kasson. The deceased formerly had charge of the Bicycle Repair Works on York street in this city. Last year he was severely burned by the explosion of a can of gasoline. He was a popular young man and won many friends during his two years' residence in this city.
