KASSON EVERGREEN CEMETERY

DANIEL H.T. BOLDT (d. 1900) Kasson: Again the Lord bids us remember, "Be ye also ready, for such an hour do ye know not the Son of Man cometh." This time Daniel Boldt was taken from his home at Kasson by the Angel of Death, July 7, 1900. Deceased was born in Germany, Oct. 3, 1821. Mr. Boldt was a loving husband, kind to his family and loved home better than any place else. He was honest, upright in all his dealings, would rather give than receive and always lived in harmony with his neighbors. His wife, three sons and two daughters mourn his death. The funeral services were held at the Kasson Lutheran Church last Monday conducted by Rev. Sam of Appleton. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to their last resting place. Dearest father, thou hast left us, And our loss we deeply feel, But 'tis God that has bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal. Yet again we hope to meet thee, When the day of life has fled, When in Heaven with joy to greet thee, Where no farewell tear is shed. Weep not that his toils are 'oer, Weep not that his race is run, God grant we may rest as calmly, When our work, like his, is done. Till then we yield with gladness, Our father to Him to keep, And rejoice in the sweet assurance, "He giveth this loved one sleep." Brillion News, Fri., July 13, 1900

CHARLOTTE HORN Death of the 80 yr. old mother of J.A. Horn in Kasson. Der Nord Westen, 27 Sept. 1888

CHRISTIAN HORN Manitowoc's Der Nord Westen - April 24, 1884. Death of 58 year old Chr. Horn in Brillion, Calumet Co. (no date). He has relatives and many friends in Maple Grove, Manitowoc County. ******* With no little emotion, we assume the sad duty of recording the death of Christian Horn of Brillion. Mr. Horn died suddenly of heart disease on Monday, the 14th of this month. He had been for some time in the enjoyment of usual good health, and was sitting on a lounge, in his house, reading the newspaper. He put the paper down, and arose to walk across the room, when he fell flat upon the floor. His friends in alarm came to his assistance and lifted him onto the lounge where he expired in a few minutes. He leaves two sons, and a daughter to mourn his premature departure; Henry who is twenty-one years old, Herman in the twentieth year and Caroline who is fourteen. Mr. Horn was a native of Lobenstein, Saxony, where he was born May 13, 1826. With his brothers, John A Horn and Frank Horn, with whom he has always maintained unbroken relations of true fraternal regard, he emigrated from his fatherland on the 27th of July 1848. The brothers landed at New York. From there they went to New Jersey where they lived about two years. Determined to pursue the ?star of empire? westward, they left New Jersey and reached Milwaukee in October 1850. From the latter place they went to Washington Co, this state, where they remained about five years. In March ?56 they settled permanently on lands in the town of Brillion and Maple Grove. The excellent tracts which they selected attest the soundness of their judgment. Christian Horn had considerable difficulty in getting his land, as there was a strong prejudice against the Germans among the Americans then living in Brillion; but Mr. Horn succeeded and became the first German settler in the town. Early the next year he was married to Amelia Werner whom he survived only about a year. Mr. Horn fully exemplified the industry, economy and thrift, so characteristic of the German people. His success in life has been the result of honest endeavor and patient toil. Out of the tangled wilderness he carved a beautiful home which descends with his other property to his children. The example, however, of his honesty, industry and economy is of much more value to them than broad acres and hoarded wealth. Mr. Horn held the office of town treasurer of Brillion for ten years, and served in nearly every other office in the town; and in every capacity served his constituents honestly and faithfully. He was a charter member of Brillion Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and was buried with all due honors by that fraternity. The funeral took place on Thursday, the 17th inst., and notwithstanding the bad condition of roads, he was accompanied to his last resting place in Maple Grove by a host of his friends Farewell remarks were made at the grave by Wm B. Minaghan in English and by M. Thomsen in German. The Odd Fellows service was read by Wm. V. McMullen Chilton Times, April 26, 1884

JOHN HORN A BRILLION PIONEER PASSED AWAY John Horn, A Veteran of Civil War Died at the Hospital at Appleton Another of the sturdy pioneers of this state and a veteran of the civil war has joined that vast throng who have crossed the valley of death to the world beyond. On Wednesday, Oct 21st, John Horn of Brillion died at the advanced age of eighty-two years at St. Elizabeth?s hospital at Appleton. Mr. Horn had been in poor health for nearly a year past, but had been able to be up and around until some four weeks ago when his eye sight began to fail and he was taken to the hospital for an operation. While a patient at St. Elizabeth?s hospital acute Bright?s disease developed and he failed rapidly until death released him from all suffering. John Horn, a son of the late Henry Horn, was born on Sept. 20, 1832 in Lobenstein, Fustenthurn, Reu, Saxony, Germany. On July 28, 1848 his parents left their native home for America and he with other members of the family accompanied them. They landed in New York in September of the same year and went to New Jersey where they made their home until 1853 when they moved to Pittsburg, Pa. Here they remained one year. And then came west to Wisconsin locating at West Bend where they resided until the fall of 1855 when the Horn family located in the forest of Maple Grove, Manitowoc County, in what is now known as the Kasson district, five miles northeast of Brillion village. While in the east Mr. Horn worked at his trade, that of basket maker and when he struck the forests of Wisconsin he met a proposition that would have caused many another person to have become discouraged, but with a spirit of determination to carve out a home, John Horn, assisted by his brother, Henry, began the task and succeeded in overcoming all obstacles and had one of the finest farms in that section. In 1860 he was appointed postmaster and served in that capacity until 1892. In 1861 he was town superintendent of school and from 1880 to 1892 was clerk of the district school board. In 1864 he enlisted in the Thirteenth Wisconsin regiment and served one year. In 1868 he established a general store at Kasson and followed the mercantile business until he retired in 1892 and moved to the village of Brillion. For some years he was connected with the Brillion furniture factory. In all walks of life he was a man who dealt fair with his fellow men and not one was held in higher esteem by his neighbors than John Horn. Mr. Horn was never married and for many years he made his home with his brother, Henry. The body was brought to Brillion on Thursday of last week and the funeral took place on Saturday from the home, Rev. M. Sauer, pastor of the Lutheran church conducting the funeral services. He is survived by two brothers, Henry and Frank, one sister, Mrs. Edw. Kolb, also five nephews and twelve nieces. Chilton Times, October 31, 1914

In 1854 the family moved to Maple Grove and proceeded to make a home ?in the woods.? The deceased lived on this farm until 1912, when he transferred the management to G. W. Kings and retired to a smaller farm in Morrison. He will live long in the memory of surrounding relatives and a large circle of friends. He leaves as a monument to his patient industry and perseverance one of the finest farms in Manitowoc county. THOMAS KINGS (d. 1876) DIED, at his residence in Maple Grove, Manitowoc Co., Wis., July 4, 1876, Mr. Thomas S. Kings, aged 66 years. Born in Abergavenny, Eng., Mr. Kings was one of the first settlers of Maple Grove. From thence until his death no action was ever done by him, in his intercourse with man, worse than to extend a helping hand to those less fortunate than himself. To sum up the qualities of this worthy man it is only necessary to add that he was, in truth, one of Nature?s Nobleman. On the evening of the 5th he was followed by a very large concourse of friends and relatives to where his earthly rest undisturbed by the turbulence and vanity of this sinful world; whilst his soul soars through regions forever bedizened with the highness and splendor of a celestial sphere. The sincere sympathy of the entire community is tendered to the bereaved family in this their hour of affliction. Manitowoc Tribune ? July 13, 1876 ? page 3

THOMAS KINGS (d. 1899) Thos. Kings, a well known resident of Maple Grove, died very suddenly on Tuesday evening of last week. His death is a most sorrowful one, following so soon the death of his brother, John. He leaves a wife and nine children. The Kings family are of English descent and their residence here tended to create a fairer conception of the English character in the minds of the old Irish settlers. A reference to the Kings' generally silenced a too-zealous arraigner of Old England. All keenly sympathize with them in their present trouble. ANDREAS STERN On Monday morning as farmer Wilhelm Degner of Town Maple Grove near Casson was bringing milk to the cheese factory, he found the body of Andreas Stern lying on the road near the entrance to the Kasson Cemetery. Degner immediately notified the town authorities and an investigation established that Stern, an old bachelor who worked a 40-acre farm near Kasson, had visited his cousin, Jacob Heinrich on Sunday - also a farmer in that town -and shortly before sunset had set out for home. On his way he suffered a heart attack. The body had lain the entire night alongside the highway exposed to the terrible weather. Considering all of the circumstances, District Attorney Kelley decided that a coroner's inquest was unnecessary. Der Nord Westen, 30 Apr. 1908 ******** NOTES FROM MAPLE GROVE On Monday morning the dead body of Andrew Stearn was found in the road one mile north of Kasson near the Lutheran cemetery. Deceased was 80 years old and had lived alone on his farm of 40 acres for the past 40 years. As there were no marks of violence on the body Dist. Attorney E. L. Kelley decided that an inquest was not necessary. He had no enemies. His remains were taken charge of by friends and were interred in the Lutheran cemetery. Manitowoc Pilot, April 30, 1908 ******** Route No. 2: Andrew Stern, an old bachelor of the vicinity of Kasson died last Sunday night. He left the Kasson House Sunday night and next morning was found dead by the roadside by Will Degner. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. Trautmann of Forest Jct. officiating. Decedent leaves a number of nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews, the Sterns, Schillings and Heinrichs. He was 80 years old and came to America from Germany. Services will be held at the Evangelical Church next Sunday at 10:00 am. Brillion News, Fri., May 1, 1908 ********** AGED KASSON MAN DEAD IN ROADWAY Andrew Stern, 80, Stricken Within Quarter Mile of Home Sunday Night Andrew Stern, an aged resident of Kasson was found dead on the highway one quarter mile from his home early this morning, the body being discovered by William Degner, a neighbor. Stern's death was due to heart failure and he was stricken while returning to his home late Sunday night from a visit to relatives residing in the vicinity. District Attorney Kelley, who was notified of the finding of the body, deemed an inquest unnecessary, after a physician had examined the body reported death due to natural causes. Stern was a bachelor and though 80 yers of age, conducted a small farm upon which he lived alone. Sunday he visited the home of a cousin, Jacob Henrichs, the only known relative of the dead man and left the Henrichs place before dark for his home and it is presumed that he was stricken by heart failure while on his way. The body had evidently been in the open during the night and even had Stern's death not have been instantaneous, the exposure in the storm would have caused his demise, owing to his advanced age. The point at which Stern's body was found was just outside the gates of the cemetery at Kasson, Stern probably having passed through the cemetery on a short cut to his home. The farm occupied by the dead man is owned by Mr. Henrichs and consists of 40 acres of land from which Stern has secured his support. Mr. Degner, who discovered the dead body, was on his way to deliver milk to the cheese factory and he immediately notified the authorities and the body was removed to the home. The funeral will probably be held on Wednesday. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Mon., Apr. 27, 1908

Christian John Stern was born February 16, 1925 in Salsdorf near Schubin Posen, Germany. When but 3 years of age death called away both of his parents within a week's tie. From then on his lot was cast among strangers to care for hi. He learned the trade of miller from his uncle but had very little chance for schooling and was practically a self made man devoting his spare moments to studies from books as opportunities permitted and he became a great lover of reading which was his only comfort in life during his later years and till death came to him. He followed his trade as miller until 1852 when he sailed for America. He settled in the state of Pennsylvania working in factories and roller mills until 1857 when he made an overland trip by horse and wagon through the wilderness from there to Wisconsin and settled down in the town of Maple Grove in Manitowoc Co., where he chose for his home, the place where he lived until his death. Feb. 26, 1860 he was united in marriage to Ernestance Neumeister. Together they carved out of the wilderness the farm which has always provided a good and respectable home for both themselves and their family. Mr. Stern was one of the organizers of the Ev. Lutheran Bartholomew church near Kasson and always remained a true Christian life and was a strong observer of the Golden Rule towards all. He constantly searched in the Scripture and was well versed in the bible which he read thru 27 times. A few years ago at the 50th Anniversary of the home church, he was the last of the original members left to be present on the occasion. Four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Stern celebrated their golden wedding. Shortly after Mr. Stern took to his bed and from then on spent the greater part of his days in bed feeling better at times but not of long duration. All that medical skill and kind hearts and hands could do to help and comfort him was done, but without avail and after long and painful suffering brought on by complication of disease and old age, he quietly passed away at 3:00 o'clock am on Wednesday, Janu. 21, 1914 at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 5 days at the homestead on the farm of his son, Gustave with whom he has spent his remaining years after retiring from work. He leaves 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Fred Giese of Menominee, Mich., and two sons, Christian and Gotfried. Mr. Stern was a true and loving husband, a kind and thoughtful neighbor and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. The funeral services took place January 24, 1914 at 12:30 pm. After a short service at the residence the body was taken to the Ev. Lutheran Bartholomew Church where a very appropriate sermon in both German and English by Rev. Martin Sauer, pastor of the congregation. He chose for his text from 1st Book of John, Chap. 3, 1-12. Leaving the church the body was escorted by a very large procession of neighbors and friends and the flower girls (who carried beautiful flowers as a last Tribute and loving evidence of the sympathy felt throughout the community for the loved one gone) to the Kasson Lutheran Cemetery where the remains were laid to rest to await the great day when he call again be called forth out of his grave to partake of the Glory of God and everlasting life.

We miss thee from our home dear father
We miss thee from they place
A shadow o'er our life is cast
We miss the sunshine of they face

We miss they kind and loving hand
Thy fond and earnest care
Our home is dark without thee father
We miss thee everywhere

Dearest one thou hast left us
And thy loss we deeply feel
But 'tis God that hast bereft us
He can all our sorrow heal

Yet again we hope to me thee
When the day of life is fled
When in heaven with joy to greet thee
Where no farewell tears are shed.

LOUISE STERN (d. 1882) Louisa Stern a young lady of 17 died quite suddenly last Friday night. Miss Stern had been busy with household duties during the day and retired to rest about ten o'clock. In a few moments she complained of a smothering sensation arose but experienced no relief and was a corpse in thirty minutes. Her funeral took place today and was largely attended. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, June 1, 1882 ******** Miss Louisa Stern, daughter of Gotlieb Stern, died very suddenly this morning, May 27th; cause of death supposed to be disease of the heart. Miss Louisa had been enjoying perfect health until a hew minutes before her death, when she awoke her mother and father only in time to see her die. This seemed to us a ruthless nipping of the expanding blossoms, but it is only another reminder of the fact that we are but creatures of a moment and most submissively yield to the will of Him who holdeth the rein in His hands. Louisa was born and reared among us, and a bright, promising young girl of 17 summers who carried only sunshine and joy with her presence.
