JAMES DUMASS Some of the earliest settlers in the village were James Dumas, a French-Canadian, and his Menominee Indian wife, who came from Green Bay and erected a log house which was boarded and whitewashed on the inside, on the lot where the residence of Mrs. William Busse now stands. Because Mr. Dumas had a "sixth sense" about finding his way through the forests, he was often engaged by the pioneer settlers as a scout. He was a good farmer in those days, for he owned a team of horses when most farmers had only a yoke of oven. He often carried home a hundred pounds of flour from Green Bay, stopping to rest at some Indian village along the way. He was jolly fellow and his "fiddling" was much sought after for the simple social occasions of those early days. James Dumas died in Reedsville in 1875 and his daughter, Mary the previous year. Both are buried on the St. Mary's Cemetery in the village. From "Recall Early Day Settlers in Reedsville" Manitowoc Herald Times - June 3, 1939 - page 5

******** Reedsville News Items Gleanings from the Reedsville Reporter There was a joyful reunion at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Foreyt Sr., last week when after a lapse of fifty years, two sisters who had not seen each other for fifty years met. A half a century ago, Miss Mary Jerabek left Bohemia to seek a new home in America leaving her sister behind. After several years this sister also came to America settling first in Baltimore, Md., afterwards removing to Cuba, Kansas where she has since lived. A longing to see her relatives induced Mrs. Kotel and daughter, Emma, who is a cashier at the Palmetto Hotel in Omaha, Neb., to make a visit to Wisconsin and last week they arrived here and surprised Mrs. Foreyt and family and other relatives. It was surely a joyous occasion, the sisters having many tales to relate of their experiences since seeing each other half a century ago. ******** Reedsville Items from Reedsville Reporter Residents of the village were shocked Thursday by the announcement that Wenzel Kabat had suffered a stroke of paralysis from the effects of which he died Thursday, without regaining consciousness at ten pm. The deceased had not been complaining of feeling ill and in company with his wife had been about town Thursday morning making purchases at local stores. Going home about 9:30 am he told his wife that he was going out into his garden to do some work. When Mrs. Kabat looked out a few moments later, she saw her husband stagger and then fall upon his knees. FRANK KIRCH Last Monday evening the C & N. W. railroad yards in our city, were the scene of a shocking accident in which Frank Kirch, a laborer of the town of Maple Grove was fatally injured. Mr. Kirch was just starting to return to his place of employment a few miles from here, after having transacted some business in town and visiting several old friends. He evidently intended to take the railroad track. At this time the east and west-bound trains are due to meet here, and the east bound train was backing onto the siding along which the unfortunate man was walking. To avoid the backward moving train, he stepped aside upon the main track, and this brought him suddenly into the full glare of the powerful headlight of the incoming passenger train. He was apparently bewildered by the awful danger of this position and before he could summon his scattered senses, the locomotive struck him and cast its mangled and bleeding victim beside the track. The train came to a stop, and willing hands carried the almost lifeless from to the depot and medical aid hastily summoned. It was clear however, that the necessary operations could not be performed at the depot, and therefore the sufferer was taken to the dwelling of Mrs. Walters. It was however, of no avail. During the night death came to his relief. The next day the body was taken to Reedsville and interred in the Catholic cemetery at Reedsville Thursday, Rev. A. Cipin officiating. The only surviving relatives live in Bohemia. Brillion News - November 16, 1900 ******** (Note: The Catholic cemetery at Reedsville is St. Marys/ Monday was November 12, 1900)

MATEJ NENAHLO BRUTAL MURDER AT REEDSVILLE Manitowoc, April ? --An old man named Matthias Nenalo, aged about fifty five years, was brutally murdered at the village of Reedsville, this county, Monday, by four young men named Morask, as announced in Tuesday's Wisconsin, briefly. They claimed that Nenalo's son owed them $4 which he refused to pay. The old man interceded in his son's behalf, whereupon one of them struck him on the head with a club, felling him to the floor. They then beat him about the head and chest with a chair until life was nearly extinct. He lingered until morning, when he died, not having regained consciousness from the time he was struck. Two of the murderers were arrested and brought here last night, and lodged in jail. Another was captured here this morning. The fourth is still at large. -Dispatch to the Wisconsin Chilton Times, April 1879 ********** A HORRIBLE MURDER AT REEDSVILLE AN OLD MAN BEATEN TO DEATH BY FOUR RUFFIANS. A shocking murder was committed at Reedsville, this county, on Monday afternoon at 4 P.M. A young man named Frank Nenahlo was engaged in hauling logs to a saw mill, and entered a saloon kept by one Lawrence, which he passed regularly on his trips to the mill. While in the saloon four young men, named Wenzel and Carl Marazek, and Joseph and John Spatecek, came in. They immediately began to dispute with young Nenahlo insisting that he was owing one of the party $4 which he refused to pay. Nenahlo denied that he was indebted to them and finally told them that he was good for it if it was a just debt, and asked them why they did not sue. They replied, "They did not want to sue, but would take the amount out of his hide." Whereupon they began beating him. Some of them drew knives and attempted to stab him. He called out to those present (deputy sheriff Mueller and the saloon keeper) "help me for God's sake; they are going to kill me.: But neither offered the slightest interference. Nenahlo's coat is cut in many places about the shoulders where the knives entered, but fortunately the knives did not enter his flesh. His father, an old man of 56, was passing the saloon and heard the outcries and went in. He carried in his hand an oak stick about 3 feet long and something over an inch and a half thick. Wenzel Marazek instantly sprung at the old man, wrested the stick from his hand and dealt him a blow with it across the head, breaking his skull. The old man fell senseless to the floor, when two of the ruffians began kicking him. Joseph Spatecek jumping repeatedly on his breast crushing in the breast bone. Carl Marazek seized a cahri and dealt the old man a blow while lying prostrate which literally crushed down his nose so that the same blow wounded both cheek bones. The deputy sheriff and saloon keeper interfered at this juncture. Frank, the old man's son, raised the old man and blood flowed in a stream from his mouth. A physician from Spring Creek was summoned who said recovery was impossible. The old man was unconscious up to the time of his death which took place yesterday morning at 4:30. Three of the murderers were arrested and are now confined in the county jail. Two were arrested at home by constable Zahn, and another was arrested in this city yesterday morning. Joseph Spatecek is at this writing (Wednesday) still at large. A constable is after him. It is believed that Joseph is in hiding some where in Kewaunee county. The four are young men, not over 21, residents of Maple Grove, and members of the same family, the Spateceks being step brothers of the other two. The Marazeks are reputed to be bad citizens, having been involved in a number of quarrels. Many believe that the Marazek boys intended to murder Frank Nenahlo as they had everything prepared to go to Minnesota when arrested. The murdered man, Mathias Nenahlo, is a resident of Rockland, one of the proprietors of the Rusch Mill at Reedsville. He is described by those who knew him as a quiet, inoffensive man. His son who was in the city yesterday, appears to be a modest man who would not willingly engage in a quarrel with any one. A great deal of indignation is expressed at the inaction of Miller and the saloon keeper. A refusal of a justice in the neighborhood to issue a warrant is also severely commented upon. The three men were brought before Justice Wallich for their preliminary examination yesterday. The Marazek boys do not seem to be greatly alarmed. Wenzel is a wild, hardy looking fellow who looked at the spectators defiantly and showed no signs of fear. John Spatacek seemed to be greatly affected. While in court his chin rested on his breast and he twirled his mustache uneasily. He is married and is the least guilty of the four. He was arrested in the city a short while after having drawn money from the bank. ******** Drs. Coakley and Blake went out to Reedsville last evening to hold a post mortem examination on the body of Nenahlo. Manitowoc Pilot, April 3, 1879 ******** EXAMINATION FOR MURDER. The examination of Wenzel Marazek for the murder of Nenahlo, some weeks ago, was concluded last Saturday, and Wenzel was held for trial and remanded to jail. No effort has been made so far to fix a bail for his release. Joseph Spatacek, who was engaged in the quarrel with young Nenahlo, was released on a nolle entered by the district attorney. He was immediately arrested on a peace warrant and released after giving $200 bail. His brother, John Spatacek, is still at large. No very earnest efforts are made to capture him as it is believed he is only guilty of an assault on young Nenahlo. Twelve witnesses were examined and their testimony bears pretty heavily on Wenzel Marazek. Even the witnesses subpoenaed by the defense, gave good evidence for the prosecution. The defense set up by Wenzel is that Nenahlo, on entering the saloon, struck him with a large stick he had picked up outside, and had again raised it to strike Carl, his brother, when Wenzel wrested it from him and inflicted the fatal blow. This was not corroborated by any of the other witnesses. It appears that there has been "bad blood" between the two families, which culminated in the murder. No evidence was given which shows that the killing was in any way premeditated, and there can be no doubt that it was done in a fit of passion. Carl Marazek's examination opened yesterday. The testimony given will not differ much from that given in the examination of his brother. Carl is not so directly responsible for the killing as his brother is. Manitowoc Pilot, April 24, 1879 P. 3 ********* A special venire for 50 jurors had to be issued in the case of Marazek, tried for the murder of Nenahlo. Reading the PILOT disqualified a great number drawn. Manitowoc Pilot, June 19, 1879 P. 3
