ALBERT RADEY, JR. (d. 1935) Tractor Crushes Youthful Farmer Albert Radey Jr. Dies Instantly In Mishap On Farm Near City Albert Radey Jr., 23-year-old farmer operating the Charles Hessel farm a mile northwest of the municipal airport, was almost instantly killed shortly after 7 a.m. today when a tractor he was operating overturned and impaled him on the prongs of a mired manure spreader. No one saw the accident, but Radey's plight was discovered by his wife and Edward Holsen, a neighbor. It was more than an hour after the accident before it was possible to release the body from beneath the tractor seat. Another tractor from a nearby farm succeeded in righting the upended machine. Dr. Gerald Ran, county coroner, who with Sheriff Max Hillier Jr., was called to the scene, said that Mr. Radey was probably instantly killed. He suffered a broken back and a crushed skull. There will be no inquest. Soft ground on the field near the large barn yesterday mired the manure spreader hub deep. Mr. Radey tried to release the spreader with the use of a team of horses but was not successful. Borrows a Tractor This morning he secured a tractor from a nearby farm and hitched it to the spreader with a chain. Examination of the chain after the accident revealed that instead of running the end through the hole in the draw-bar at the rear axle, Radey had taken a hitch over the housing of the axle. When he applied the power this hitch served as a lever to raise the front of the tractor. Radey was thrown back against the prongs of the manure spreader and pinned fast by the tractor. First on the scene were Edward Holsen, who operates the next farm, and Roland Bierman, a neighbor boy who was walking down the road to assist Radey in the farm work. Both hurried to the barn to bring a team of horses but it was not possible to right the tractor and release Radey. After additional help succeeded in righting the tractor the body of Mr. Radey was removed from the drum of the spreader and taken to Shimek and Schwartz parlors in this city. Funeral Saturday Announcement was made that funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from the St. Patrick church at Maple Grove in charge of the Rev. Father E.A. Radey of Holy Innocents Parish, this city, a cousin of the deceased. Mr. Radey was born on the homestead farm in the town of Franklin near Taus, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Radey Sr. After finishing the rural schools he took up farming and in 1931 was married to Bernice Layman of this city. They took up residence on the present Hessel farm, which the deceased since operated. Survivors are his widow, a two year old son, (private); two brothers, Henry and William, Taus; a sister Emily, city, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Radey Sr., Taus. DANIEL REIDY Farmer Fatally Injured In an Unusual Accident Fractures Skull When He Falls Backward Trying to Pull Stubborn Calf Daniel Reidy, 57, Franklin farmer, a former resident of this city and father of six children, was fatally injured Saturday in a most unusual accident. While helping a neighbor move some livestock from a barn in Franklin, Reidy slipped over backwards and struck his head on the cement floor. He sustained a basal skull fracture which caused his death four hours later. No Inquest Planned. Dr. Gerald Rau, Two Rivers, county coroner, who was summoned, said there will be no inquest. The coroner reported that although Reidy fell only his own length on the cement floor the impact was sufficient to cause a fatal skull fracture. Reidy walked, after the fall, to his own farm from the P. Rolland farm in Franklin, where the accident happened and at first refused to see a physician. Reidy, according to a report made to the coroner, had gone to the Rolland farm Saturday morning at 10 o'clock to buy some kerosene. Rolland was engaged in moving three calves from the barn to a field, Reidy offered to assist him. A piece of new rope was attached to one of the calves and Reidy started to lead it from the barn. The animal was stubborn and as Reidy pulled backward the knot about the calf's neck slipped. Reidy fell over backward to the cement floor. He recovered consciousness and although complaining of injuries to his head was able to leave for the next farm where he resided with his family and Thomas Sullivan. Condition Grew Worse Reidy's condition grew worse and he died at 3 p.m. Saturday shortly after a physician had been called. Mr. Reidy was born in Morrison, Brown county, and spent the greater part of his life farming. JEREMIAH REIDY (d. 1905) Notes From Maple Grove: Mr. Jerry Reedy (sic), one of the first settlers of Morrison, passed away Thursday evening, after a three months' illness, the cause of his demise being liver trouble. FRANK REMIKER Frank Remiker Is Fire Victim Cottage Near Grimms Is Destroyed by Blast Frank Remiker Is Fire Victim Cottage Near Grimms Is Destroyed by Blast Frank Remiker, 84, aged town of Franklin bachelor recluse, burned to death late Saturday morning in his flaming one-story frame cottage two miles north of Grimms. The charred body of the retired farmer was found in the ruins of the home by firemen from Whitelaw and Reedsville. Neighbors believed several thousand of dollars in cash burned in the fire. Remiker was the central figure in 1946 when a couple of slick strangers victimized him with the old handerkerchief "switch" trick, obtaining $3,000 which Remiker had withdrawn from a Reedsville bank a few weeks before. Discovery of the fire Saturday was made by Peter Gosz, Cato rural mail carrier, as he was traveling his route north of Grimms. At that moment the frame home was wrapped in flames. First on the scene was the Whitelaw fire department. Later a truck from the Reedsville department answered the call. Sheriff Clarence Baryenbruch and Coroner Theodore Teitgen were also summoned. The charred body of Remiker was found near a kitchen wood burning stove. Swindled 8 Years Ago Neighbors believe the farmer might have been boosting the fire with kerosene and an explosion resulted, preventing Remiker from escaping. The Remiker swindle eight years ago broke when the farmer, who accumulated money down through the years by the sale of grain from his farm, admitted to county officers that he had been "taken" by the strangers who held a crucifix and rosary in front of him and offered him $10,000 with which to play Santa Claus to aged widows and orphans. One of the strangers removed the $3,000 of Remiker's cash from a strong box and left in its place a magazine folded and held in a rubber band. The $25,000 the strangers put in the box to prove his good faith turned out to be another magazine faced with five $1 bills. Remiker found the worthless paper when he opened the box two weeks later. Mesmerized by Pair In telling of the swindle at the time Remiker said he had been "mesmerized" by the strangers. The first stranger visited the Remiker farm at Christmas time, 1945. He told Remiker he had $7,000 and wanted to buy a farm, and gave his name as "August Huber" and said he lived west of Reedsville. Early in January the stranger was back again, talking farms, and was joined by a second stranger who said he as from Oklahoma. The latter told Remiker he was looking for his uncle, and had $10,000 in a bag to give to the uncle which he had left in Manitowoc. Then he proposed that he give the $10,000 to Remiker and Huber to distribute among the needy around Grimms. Then the Remiker $3,000 was rolled in a handerchief and put in the strong box. Then they locked the box and told Remiker they would go out Manitowoc for the $10,000. The two strangers never came back. Mr. Remiker is survived by a brother, Joseph, in Milwaukee, and two sisters, Mrs. John Linsmeyer and Mrs. Joseph Wallender, both of Whitelaw. Manitowoc Herald Times, April 5, 1952 P. 1 ******** May Salvage Charred Bills Some of the charred and burned currency found in the ruins of the farm home of Frank Remiker, 84-year-old town of Franklin bachelor, burned to death in a fire that leveled the home April 5, will probably be salvaged. Found in a wallet near Remiker's body was an undetermined amount of bills, so badly charred the denominations could not be determined. They were gathered up by firemen called to the farm fire, two miles north of Grimms. There was one other charred bunch of papers, which also might contain currency, found near the dead mean's body. All of this was brought to the Manitowoc Savings Bank this week by Atty. Victor Miller of St. Nazianz, representing the heirs of the dead man. It will be taken to the Federal Reserve Bank at Chicago which has special equipment to check on burned currency and if the money can be identified as to denomination, the government will make good this amount, which would go to the estate. Attorney Miller said Mr. Remiker had a safety deposit box at the Reedsville State Bank, which probably contains notes, papers and possibly currency. The key was never found in the ruins of Remiker's home and the bank is sending for a dulicate key, so the deposit box may be opened. At the scene of the fire neighbors said they believed Remiker, who in his lifetime loaned money to farmers and friends on notes, possibly had some of currency hidden away in his small cottage. How the fire started in the Remiker home has never been determined. Relatives believe a stove exploded as he fed the fire kerosene to bring up the flames. The blaze was discovered by Peter Gosz, a rural mail carrier, on his route near the home. Remiker's charred body was located near the kitchen stove. Remiker, a recluse who kept pretty much to himself, was victimized by a pair of smooth strangers in 1946, through the medium of the old handkerchief trick. They made off with $3,000 in cash. No trace was ever found of the pair. Mr. Remiker is survived by a brother and two sisters. Manitowoc Herald Times, April 17, 1952 P. 26

Brillion News, Fri., Apr. 18, 1902 ******** (NOTE: This is the only Ryan family I have a record of for Maple Grove township, so this is being put with Patrick so the article will be found easily) 3 GENERATIONS HELD LAND WITH NO CLEAR TITLE One of the most interesting transactions in sale of real estate in years took place today when Sheriff Schuette sold an eighty-acre tract of land in the town of Maple Grove, the title of which records in the register of deeds office is in the name of the original owner, John Ryan, who entered it from the government in pioneer days and died in 1861. Three generations have lived on this place and died without the recording of any transfers of the title by deed, will or otherwise. The third male occupant, James Ryan, a bachelor living alone, burned to death with the building on the place some four years ago. The original owner had three sons, two of whom went to Iowa many years ago and prospered. The third son, Patrick, went into occupancy of this farm. This occupant, Patrick Ryan, married a widow named Burns with two children. Patrick conveyed one of the two forties to his wife, so that when the two died one forty went to his six children, and the other forty to the children of both. Several of this third genertion have died leaving children of the fourth generation which, with the numerous descendants of the two sons of the second generation scattered through several Western states, made a situation which the circuit judge declared to be the most complicated affair of its kind that ever came to his attention. In a case like this the court issued an order fixing the fractional interests of the parties and ordering that the land be sold by the sheriff and the proceeds divided among the persons concerned. As the fractional interest appear at the sale by Sheriff Schuette this morning a large number of neighbors from Maple Grove were present. Several of them made bids on the farm. It was knocked down to Bill Ryan of Milwaukee, who is one of the person entitled to share in the distribution. It brought $6,125. Manitowoc Herald News, Thursday, February 24, 1921 P. 1
