JOHN BROST (d. 1937) Butcher At School Hill Takes Life St. Nazianz.—(Special) - John Brost, 50, a butcher at School Hill, committed suicide late yesterday afternoon by shooting himself through the head. The body was found about 5 p. m. Thursday. Despondency over ill health was believed to have led Brost to take his life. He was born Sept. 8, 1887, in the town of Meeme. Twenty-three years ago he was married to Miss Ottilia Fessler. He had operated a butcher shop in School Hill for the past 26 years. Survivors are his wife, three children, Norman, Joseph and Marie, all at home, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Ed. Miller of Cleveland, Wis. Funeral services will be held at 9 a. m. Monday at Holy Trinity church in School Hill. - 1937 ******** Brost Death Termed Accident or Suicide Authorities Lean Toward Accident Theory; Announce Case is Closed John Brost, 50, School Hill butcher, whose body with a bullet through its head, was found in a field near his shop September 9, met death either accidentally or was a suicide. This was the decision reached today by District Attorney John Cashman and Sheriff Norman Berkedal, who have made an exhaustive investigation of several puzzling angles that cropped up after the finding of Brost's body. They announced the case closed, as far as they are concerned. Accident Theory According to the sheriff, there is a possibility that Brost might have been fatally wounded by the accidental discharge of the automatic gun he carried. It is reported that he planned to kill some stray dogs which had been hanging around the Brost slaughter house, a short distance from the butcher's shop in School Hill. Sheriff Berkedal said Brost might have slipped and fell and in some manner his finger might have pressed the trigger of the gun as he fell backward. The bullet from the .32 calibre gun entered behind the right ear and came out over the left eye. Reports that paraffin tests failed to disclose powder burns on the back of Brost's neck or on his hand are easily explained, the officers said. The undertaker had washed the body to prepare it for burial before the paraffin impressions were taken. Lack of any grounds for Brost to end his life two weeks ago led officers to believe that the butcher did not commit suicide. His home life had been pleasand, he had no known enemies, and had no disagreements with any of his customers. Son Found Body Brost left his market in School Hill on the morning of Sept. 9 in charge of his hired man, and walked out the rear door to go to the slaughter house. He wore his apron and shop cap. When he did not come back by evening his son, Norman, 19, went to search for his father and found the dead body slumped at the edge of the field near the slaughter house. There was no sign of a struggle or indication of foul play. County authorities, when they began an investigation, found several points which needed further study before a decision could be reached as to how Brost came to his death. They did not want to dismiss hastily a surmise that the School Hill man might have been the victim of foul play. "We have finished our investigation and have closed the case." District Attorney John Cashman said this afternoon. Under the humane management of Supt. Drews the patients are made as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. The systematic running of the farm furnishes an abundance of meat and vegetables, enough and to spare. To Mrs. Drews, the matron, praise is due for the efficient care of the kitchen and the preparation of plenty of plain but nourishing food. The many years of service the attendants have been employed testifies to their efficiency and trustworthiness in the care of the unfortunates. And lastly too much praise can not be bestowed to the trustees for the painstaking manner of the performance devolving upon them. For these various reasons our county asylum is ever acknowledged as one of the best in the state. Respectfully submitted. Louis Falge, M.D. Upon motion of Mr. Gennrich, the report was adopted unanimously upon roll call. JOSEPH BROST (d. 1914) SCHOOL HILL MAN WHIRLED TO DEATH, LEG TORN FROM BODY JOSEPH BROST CAUGHT IN SHAFTING OF MACHINERY AT MEEME MILL MEETS INSTANT DEATH YESTERDAY. NO WITNESSES TO THE TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. Whirled about the shafting of the machinery in the Meeme mill where he was employed, Joseph Brost, a well known School Hill man, met a terrible death yesterday afternoon. Brost is believed to have been caught in the shafting while engaged in adjusting the belt to the machine. No one witnessed the accident, the first known of the tragedy being when Brost’s dead body, badly mangled, was picked up by employes of the mill. The body had been stripped of every stitch of clothing, which was torn to small bits and scattered about the room and entangled in the machinery. Brost’s right leg had been torn from the body and his flesh was terribly torn and mangled, the body scar being recognized. The man was dead when found. Brost had been employed at the mill for some time and was alone at the time the accident happened. It is presumed that he entered the pit to adjust the belt and that in some manner his clothing was caught in the shafting and he was whirled to his death without a chance to summon help. The body was thrown from the shaft to the floor and was terribly bruised. Brost was 24 years of age and is survived by a widow and one child. He was married about two years ago and was well known and favorably known in the vicinity where he resided. The body was taken to School Hill and burial will be held there Thursday afternoon. With the exception of a broken wind shield and top, the car suffered little damage. For five years Mr. Bushmann was boss of a bridge building crew, and at present he and his men were about to complete the Krueger bridge in the town of Maple Grove. He had been employed by the county for the past three years. The deceased was born in the town of Meeme June 12, 1866, and lived there during his entire life.
