ALVINA PAYNE Mrs. Alvina Payne, 83, a resident of Sunny Ridge, Sheboygan since Oct. 24, died there shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels, Sheboygan. The Rev. Luverna Bauer will officiate and burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Spring Valley, Manitowoc County, with graveside service by the Rev. Merlin Huebschman. Mrs. Payne, nee Kolb, was born Feb. 20, 1879, in the Town of Meeme, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late Ernest and Emma Steinhaus Kolb. She was educated in district schools and shortly thereafter went to Harlem, Mont. She was married to Philip Payne Oct. 15, 1921, at Chinook, Mont. In 1947, she returned to Sheboygan where she was engaged as a practical nurse. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Unity Fellowship Church. Surviving are three brothers, Dr. Fred Kolb of Spokane, Wash., Roland of Cedarburg and Emil of Davenport, Iowa; and two sisters, Mrs. Rose Lehan of Chicago and Mrs. Emma Jacobi of Newton. She attended public school in Meeme and was confirmed in March, 1894 at St. James Evangelical Church, Spring Valley. As a young woman she went out west, spending the greater part of her life in Harlem, Mont. Her marriage to Philip Payne took place in Chinook, Mont., Oct. 15, 1921. Mrs. Payne returned to Sheboygan in 1947, working several years here as a practical nurse. She had resided at the local King’s Daughters home until going to Sunny Ridge. Mrs. Payne was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Unity Fellowship Church. Surviving are three brothers, Dr. Fred Kolb, Spokane, Wash., Roland of Cedarburg and Emil of Davenport, Ia., and two sisters, Mrs. Rose Lehan of Chicago and Mrs. Emma Jacobi of Newton. LENA PROCHNOW KOEPPEN Lena (Prochnow) Koeppen, 92, a former Kiel resident, died Friday afternoon, May 10, 1991, at Calumet Homestead, New Holstein, where she had been a resident for the past three years. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley. Rev. William Kefting will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She was born January 26, 1899, in the town of Liberty, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late Fred and Heneritta Zulsdorf Lutzke. In May of 1919 she married William Prochnow in the town of Liberty. He preceded her in death in September 1962. In May of 1966 she married Henry Koeppen at St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley. She and Henry lived in the town of Meeme until 1978 when they moved to Kiel. She was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley, and an honorary member of the Ladies Aid. Survivors include her husband, Henry, who is a resident of Calumet Homestead; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Dorothy Prochnow of San Marcos, Calif.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lorraine and Fred Reese of Brillion, Mavis Gutschow of Kiel, Audrey and Leonard Tysver of New London; 18 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; 19 step great grandchildren; a step son, Melvin and Georgene Lutzke of St. Nazianz; a daughter- in-law, Penny Prochnow of Honolulu, Hawaii. WILLIAM PROCHNOW William A. Prochnow, 64, of Rt. 2, Kiel, died Wednesday night at Maple Crest Sanitorium where he had been a patient two months. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. James United Brethren Church of Spring Valley, the Rev. Merlin Huebschman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Prochnow was born July 17, 1898, in the Town of Rockland, son of the late Gustave and Amelia Kohls Prochnow. He married Lena Lutzke May 15, 1919, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Town Liberty. The Prochnos operated farms until their retirement in 1949. Survivors include his wife, two sons, Lester of Honolulu, Hawaii, and William Jr., of San Marcos, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Donald Preuss of Oconto Falls, Mrs. Elwood Gutschow of Rt. 1, Valders, and Mrs. Don J__benow of New London; two brothers, Charles of Manitowoc and Elmer of Reedsville; three sisters, Mrs. William Tuebe of Green Bay, Mrs. Eda Schwabe of Manitowoc and Mrs. Elbert Reimer of Sheboygan; 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. MARLIN QUAST Marlin Quast, age 76, of 1001 N. 49th St., Sheboygan, and formerly of the town of Meeme, Manitowoc County, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at St. Nicholas Hospital. He was born Aug. 30, 1927 in Shbeoygan, a son of the late Herbert and Viola (Radke) Quast. Marlin graduated from New Holstein High School in 1945, later serving in the U.S. Navy. Elreta Amel and Marlin Quast were married on Sept. 15, 1948. The couple celebrated 55 years of marriage in 2003. Marlin was employed at the Kohler Company over 43 years, retiring as an inspector in Quality Control in 1993. He was a member of St. James United Church of Christ in Spring Valley where he had served on the consistory. Marlin was also a member of the Kohler Quarter Century club. An avid outdoorsman, Marlin enjoyed hunting, fishing and cmaping with his family. He was also an armchair quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. Surviving Marlin is his loving wife: Elreta; two sons: Herbert (Mari) Quast of Sheboygan and Jeff (Linda) Quast of rural Kiel; four daughters: Pamela (David) Balzer of Sheboygan; Janet (James) Roe of Park Falls; Lisa (Mark) Koenig of Cleveland; Amy (Karl) Christianson of New Holstein. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister: Diane (Eugene) Hanson of Sheboygan; a half sister: Nancy Stafford of Ramsey, Minn.; and a half brother: John Quast of Bayport, Minn. MARY RIECK Funeral services for Mrs. August Rieck, 86, who died Saturday, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Stoltenberg funeral home in Cleveland, and at 2 p.m. at St. James Evangelical Reform church in Spring Valley, the Rev. Charles E. Schmall officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body may be viewed from 7 p.m. today until the time of the service at the funeral home. The casket will not be opened in church. Mrs. Rieck, the former Mary Schmidt, was born in the town of Meeme in 1859. She was married to August Rieck in 1879, and they operated a homestead farm until he died in 1902. For 14 years Mrs. Rieck resided in Cleveland, before making her home with her children. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ben Reineking of the town of Rhine, four sons, Arthur and Herman of Manitowoc, Alfred of Meeme, and Edmund of Lena, Wis., a brother, Mathew Schmidt of Milwaukee, 19 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. MARY P. RUSSELL Former County Resident Dies Mrs. Mary Russell, 69, a former resident of Meeme, passed away last night at Chicago and the remains will be brought to Meeme tonight for burial at the old home but funeral arrangements have not been completed. Her husband died several years ago. One son, Edward in Iowa, four brothers, Julius Ohse, of White, S.D., August of Meeme, Henry of Seattle, Wash., and Edmund of Meeme, three sisters, Mrs. Etta Krueger and Mrs. Lizzie Hammelmann of Chicago and Miss Minnie Ohse of Meeme survive. CARL G. SCHMAHL, REV. Rev. Carl G. Schmahl Dies at Home in Town of Mosel The Rev. Carl G. Schmahl, pastor of St. Mark’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in the Town of Mosel and St. James Evangelical and Reformed Church in the Town of Meeme for the past 25 years, died Saturday at his home in the Town of Mosel. He was 53. A native of the Town of Rhine, he was born June 23, 1905, a son of the late Henry and Catherine Reineck Schmahl, and was confirmed at Trinity Reformed Church in Elkhart Lake on March 31, 1918, by the Rev. Otto J. Vriesen. He received his elementary education at Lime Ridge School District No. 5 in the Town of Rhine and was graduated from Elkhart Lake High School in 1923. In the fall he enrolled in Sheboygan County Normal School and was graduated from there in May, 1924. The following year he taught at the Guenther Rural School in Marathon County. In the fall of 1925, he enrolled at Sheboygan Business College where he also served as a part-time instructor. After completing the business course in June, 1926, he accepted a position as bookkeeper at Sell Brothers Co., Sheboygan. On Nov. 8, 1926, he was stricken with polio. Helpless and completely paralyzed, he suffered for six months before his strength slowly began to return. It was during the following two years of recuperation that he became inspired by the miracle of his almost complete recovery and decided to enter the ministry. He enrolled at Mission House College and Seminary in February, 1930, and was graduated in June, 1934. A few days after his graduation he was ordained a minister of the Evangelical and Reformed Church at Trinity Reformed Church in Elkhart Lake. In January 1934, he accepted a call to serve at the Mosel and Meeme Evangelical and Reformed Parish following the sudden death of the Rev. William H. Leonhard. And in May of the same year, he accepted the congregation’s request to serve as pastor of both churches. He has served the two congregations since. His marriage to Miss Emelia E. Bohne of Cleveland was solemnized on Feb. 6, 1937, by the Rev. E. C. Jaberg of Sheboygan. She died four years later. On May 22, 1938, he dedicated the new St. Mark’s Church and during the past year, he guided St. James Congregation with a vast remodeling project and the construction of an additional wing to the church. Surviving are a daughter, a brother, Fred of Glenbeulah, and two sisters, Mrs. Justina Kuhn of Elkhart Lake and Miss Minnie Schmahl of Glenbeulah. Five sisters and a brother also preceded him in death. (Survivors edited for privacy) Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark’s Church in the Town of Mosel. The Rev. E. L. EMELIA SCHMAHL Mrs. Carl Schmahl, nee Emelia Bohne, for a number of years librarian at the Herald-Times, died Thursday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bohne, at Cleveland, Wis. She was moved to the Bohne home from her own home at the parsonage of St. Mark's Evangelical and Reformed church in the town of Mosel, in March. The widower, the Rev. Mr. Schmahl, is pastor of St. Mark's church, and St. James Evangelical and Reformed church in the town of Meeme. Mrs. Schmahl had been ill and confined to her bed since December, 1939. Funeral services will be held Sunday. The body is lying in state at the St. Mark's parsonage. At 11 a.m. Sunday brief rites will be conducted there by the Rev. William Beckmann of the Mission House. The body will be moved to St. Mark's church after the rites and will lie in state at the church until 2 p.m. when formal funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Clarence Schmidt of the Emanuel church of the town of Herman and the Rev. Elmer Jaberg of Sheboygan. At St. James cemetery at Spring Valley, where interment will be made, the Rev. William Schultz of Schwartzwald will officiate. Mrs. Schmahl was born on May 17, 1896, in the town of Meeme, the daughter of Herman and Anna Bohne. She was married on February 6, 1937, to the pastor of the St. Mark's and St. James churches. She was educated at the Spring Valley district school and at the Manitowoc County Rural Normal School. Following her graduation from the Normal school she taught in the rural and state graded schools at Rockland, Centerville and Two Rivers for ten years. After attending the University of Wisconsin library school she joined the editorial staff of the Herald-Times in 1928 and was staff librarian until her marriage. She was a member of St. James congregation all her life, and since her marriage she was a member of the Ladies Aid society of St. Marks. During her residence in Manitowoc she was an active member of the Business and Professional Women's club. Surviving Mrs. Schmahl are her husband, one daughter (private); parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bohne of Cleveland; two brothers, Henry F. Bohne of Newton and Herman J. JULIUS SCHNEIDER RURAL NEWS-Osman… Julius Schneider, an old resident of northern Meeme died at his home on Feb. 2, following a stroke of paralysis which he suffered a year ago. He was 76 years old and is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Schneider and six children, Elizabeth, Anton, Mathilda, Fred, Albert and Margaret. Also eleven grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by those who knew him for he had a jolly disposition and was liked by all. He suffered a stroke of apoplexy about a year and a half ago, but of late had been feeling fine and was able to get around. He had dinner with the family Friday noon and was as jolly as ever, but shortly after he got a weak spell, from which he died about an hour later. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon and interment was in the Spring Valley Cemetery. Besides his wife, six children, Elizabeth, Mathilde, Mrs. Aug. Langenhahn, Anton, Albert and Fred survive him. He is also survived by one brother, A.F. Schneider of Osman and one sister, Mrs. Mahnke of Manitowoc. STELLA SCHNEIDER Mrs. Stella Schneider, 72, of Rt. 1, Newton, died early Friday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, of a lingering illness. She had been a hospital patient three weeks. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. James Evangelical and Reformed Church, Spring Valley. The Rev. Merlin Huebschmann will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Schneider was born Aug. 24, 1887, in the Town of Oshkosh, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Weidemann. Sep. 7, 1921, she was married to Albert W. Schneider at Oshkosh and they settled on the home farm at Rt. 1, Newton. The couple retired from farming in 1945 and moved to Kiel. Following the death of Mr. Schneider April 22, 1951, she returned to live at the farm home. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. Surviving are three sons, (private); brother, Walter Weidemann of Oshkosh; two sisters, Mrs. Amanda Perrin and Mrs. Henry Gumz of Oshkosh; and eight grand- children. HARVEY SCHNELL Harvey H. Schnell, age 84, of New Holstein, formerly of School Hill died Saturday evening August 26, 2000 at Calumet Medical Center where he was a patient for the last five days. He was born August 15, 1916 in Kiel, son of the late Carl and Ella Ott Schnell. He attended Pigeon Lake area schools and Trinity Lutheran School in the Town of Liberty. In 1986 he was given the honor of Honorary Alumnus of Lakeland College. Harvey served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. On May 12, 1938 he married the former Lillian Fessler at St. Mark's UCC in the Town of Mosel, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 3, 1984. On Dec. 27, 1986 he married the former Ethel Thiessen at St. John's UCC in New Holstein. For more than 50 years Harvey operated Fessler Feed Mill in School Hill with his brother-in-law Alfred Fessler until his recent retirement. He was a member of St. James UCC in Spring Valley were he was involved with the Church Consistory and the Cemetery Association. He also served on many local school boards. Harvey enjoyed spending time with his family and Ethel's family. His lifetime included many acts of generosity and helpfulness. Survivors include his wife Ethel; two children, Darlene and John Foreman of Racine, and Vernon and Karen Schnell of Manitowoc. Four Grandchildren, Larry and Nancy Schultz, Randy and Kim Schultz, Steve and Susan Leger and Michael Schnell. Three Great-Grandchildren, Ryan and Abby Schultz and Zachary Leger. A sister-in-law, Marie Fessler of School Hill. He is further survived by Three Step Children, Prudence Smith of New Holstein, Sandy and Jim Wise of Green Bay and Terry and Karen Thiessen of New Holstein. He is also survived by numerous Step-Grandchildren, Step-Great Grandchildren and Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Lorfeld. LILLIAN SCHNELL Lillian Schnell, 64, of School Hill, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 3, at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, where she ahd been a patient the last three days. Mrs. Schnell, nee Lillian Fessler, was born April 30, 1920, at School Hill, daughter of the late Joseph and Edna Langenhahn Fessler. She was a graduate of Kiel High School. She was married to Harvey Schnell, May 12, 1938, at St. Mark United Church of Christ, Town of Mosel. After their marriage they resided in School Hill. Mrs. Schnell was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley. She was the church organist for the past 40 years and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Mrs. Schnell was a charter member of Ladies Aid Society. Survivors include her husband, Harvey, a son and daughter-in-law, Vernon and Karen Schnell of Manitowoc; a daughter, Mrs. Darlene Leger of Racine; a brother, Alfred Fessler of School Hill and three grandchildren. LORENA E. SCHURRER Lorena Schurrer, 77, a former Sheboygan resident, died Sunday at Willowdale Nursing Home, New Holstein, where she had been a resident for the past year. The former Lorena Wolters was born February 12, 1905, in the town of Meeme, a daughter of the late John and Katherine Sixel Wolters. She attended district school. On October 19, 1927, she married John Artmann in Chicago, Ill. The couple lived in Sheboygan. She married Edwin Schurrer November 30, 1957. The couple operated a motel at Hika. Mr. Schurrer died in 1977. Mrs. Schurrer was also employed as secretary for the superintendent of schools in Manitowoc. She was a member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ, Sheboygan. Survivors include two step-sons, Roger Schurrer, of Raleigh, N.C., and Allen Schurrer, rural New Holstein; three step-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Belitz, of Sheboygan, and Mrs. Arthur Sohn, of Cleveland, and Mrs. Elmer Sohn, R. 1, Newton. ARTHUR SCHWARTZ Arthur L. Schwartz, 48, of 518 Grant Ave., died shortly after noon Wednesday at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness. A native of Manitowoc County, he was born Feb. 13, 1911, at Centerville, a son of the late John and Louisa Schwartz. He attended district school and was baptized and confirmed at St. James Evangelical and Reformed Church at Spring Valley. On Nov. 15, 1937, he was married to Miss Elmira Sebald of Sheboygan at Hollydale, Calif. The couple made their home there for several months before returning to Sheboygan in 1938. An employe of the Kohler Co. since he was 17 years old, Mrs. Schwartz worked there for 31 years prior to the time illness forced his retirement last January. He was employed most recently as a maintenance man at the Kohler plant. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Kohler Co. Quarter-Century Club. CAROLINE SCHWARTZ Caroline M. Schwartz, 78, of 13232 Point Creek Road, Newton, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 27, 2002 unexpectedly at her home. She is the former Caroline Koeppen born Feb. 1, 1924 in the Town of Meeme, daughter of the late Christian and Alvina Schmidt Koeppen. She attended Woodland Park School in the town of Meeme. On Oct. 14, 1944 she married Allen E. Schwartz at Zion Lutheran church, Louis Corners. He preceded her in death on June 7, 1995. Caroline was employed at A.A. Laun Furniture in Kiel for 25 years retiring in 1987. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. LESTER SCHWARTZ Farmer Finds His Son Dead in Bed at Meeme Farm Home Heart Attack Is Fatal to Lester Schwartz Lester Schwartz, 33, unmarried Meeme farmer and hauling contractor, was found dead in his upstairs bedroom this morning. Coroner Theodore Teitgen said the man died of a heart attack. The victim lived with his elderly father, John Schwartz, in their farm home a mile and a half east of School Hill. The father discovered his son dead when he tried to awaken him this morning. Oliver Schwartz, brother of the victim, was called by the father. He notified George Twohig of Kiel who in turn called the coroner. Both Coroner Teitgen and sheriff Clarence Baryenbruch went to the Schwartz farm. (snip) He was the brother of Gerhardt Schwartz, killed in his Kiel garage several months ago when his car on which he was working, placed on blocks, fell on him and crushed him. LOUISA SCHWARTZ Mrs. Louisa Marie Schwartz, 61, died Saturday at the farm home two miles northwest of Spring Valley in the town of Meeme. She had been in ill health eight years. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. from the home and at 2 o'clock at the St. James Evangelical and Reformed church. The Rev. Carl Schmahl will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Schwartz was born in Meeme in 1879, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Oehmichen. He farmed the homestead until 1954 when he moved to Sheboygan where he was employed at Watry Industry for six years until illness forced his retirement in September, 1969. He was a member of Ebenezer UCC and a member of the Sheboygan Amvets Post 18. MELVIN WALTER SEIFERT Melvin "Mickey" Walter Seifert, age 62, of Newton, died Wednesday, February 4, 1998. He was born September 10, 1935, in the town of Meeme, son of the late George and Ida Rades Seifert. He attended rural Pigeon River School in the town of Meeme and was a 1953 graduate of Kiel High School. From 1955 to 1957, he served in the Armed Services being stationed in Hawaii. On January 2, 1960, he married Violet Lorfeld and they resided in the town of Meeme. For seven years he operated a farm and worked at Lake-to-Lake Dairy in Kiel until 1963. From 1963 until 1982 he was employed at Siefert Manufacturing Company in Kiel. In the early 1970's he began operating his own welding shop. He is survived by his wife, Violet; was the proud father of three daughters, Susan (Ken) Sell, Kiel, Janice (Fred) Reindl, st. Nazianz, Nancy (Anthony) Massucci, Lawrenceville, N.J.; and his grandson, Michael Reindl whom he adored. VIOLET EMILY (LORFELD) SEIFERT Violet Emily (Lorfeld) Seifert, age 74, of rural Newton, died Saturday evening, October 8, 2011 touched by angels, at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Center. She was born January 30, 1937 in the town of Meeme, daughter of the late Arthur & Hertha (Wippermann) Lorfeld. On January 2, 1960, Violet was united in marriage to Melvin "Mickey" Seifert. He preceded her in death on February 4, 1998. She was baptized April 4, 1937 and was a lifetime member of St. James United Church of Christ in Spring Valley. She attended the rural Spring Valley grade school and graduated from Kiel High School in 1955. Her post secondary education included Manitowoc County Teachers College graduating in 1957 and then earning her Bachelor degree in education from Lakeland College in 1970 with a Masters equivalent in 1983. She taught at Woodland Park from 1957-1960, Meeme Elementary School from 1965-1968, and Cooper Elementary School from 1973-1998. She served as Treasurer of the Cooper PTA for over 10 years, Vice President of the Meeme PTA and Treasurer and President of the St. James United Church of Christ consistory for over 10 years. During those years she also taught Sunday school. She served as Treasurer and President of the Rural Church Fellowship for over 20 years and was involved with the Stewardship and Long Range Planning Committees, as well as President and member of the Ladies Aid. Her love of teaching encompassed many hours reading favorite children's books to her daughters and grandchildren. Our mother spent endless days tending to her garden, harvesting and offering guidance on how to preserve the produce. During her five month journey, the teaching continued and the lessons included: steadfastness, unlimited patience, perseverance, strength, thoroughness and trust in faith. Violet was the proud mother of three daughters: Sue (Ken) Sell, Kiel, Janice (Fred) Reindl, St. Nazianz, and Nancy (Thomas) Nye, New Jersey. Her three grandchildren warmed her heart: Michael and Matthew Reindl and Addison Nye. She is further survived by her three sisters: her twin sister, Virginia (Milton) Braun, Sheboygan Falls, Mary Ellen Schnelle, Cleveland, and Ellen Mae (William) Surfus, Manitowoc, one sister-in-law, Helen Rotsted, Sheboygan Falls, one brother- in-law, Willard Seifert, New Holstein, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. The couple was engaged in farming in the Town of Meeme their entire married life. Mr. Sixel died Aug. 14, 1945. HERBERT SIXEL Herbert G. Sixel, 67, of R. 1, Newton, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon while visiting near Howards Grove. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He was born in Mosel, Sheboygan county in 1874 and in 1903 married Miss Anna Fiedler. They located on the present homestead. For 29 years he was a member of the consistory of the St. James Evangelical Reformed church of Meeme. ARTHUR A. SOHN Mr. Arthur H. Sohn(sic), age 96, former Village of Cleveland resident, passed away Sunday, December 27, 1998, at Willow-dale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein, where he had resided since 1992. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 2, 1999, at St. James United Church of Christ Spring Valley. Pastor William Kesting will officiate, with burial in St. James U.C.C. Cemetery. Born May 18, 1902, in the town of Meeme, he was the son of the late Fred and Emma Langenhahn Sohn. On October 27, 1921, he was united in marriage to Emma Wolters (sic), town of Meeme, and the couple resided there, where they were engaged in farming until their retirement when they moved to Cleveland. Emma passed away in May 1995. Arthur was a lifelong member of St. James U.C.C., Spring Valley, where he had served on the consistory. He had also served on the Town of Meeme Board for a number of years. Mr. Sohn was among the first organizers of Lake to Lake Cooperative in Kiel. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Gloria Duchow, Brillion; two granddaughters, Mrs. Faith (Jim) Thompson, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Mrs. Debra (Richard) Preuhs, Eagle Rivers, Wis.; one grandson, John (Sue) Duchow, Tennessee; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Edna (Ruby) Lorenz and Mrs. Eliza (Reinold) Schuette, both of Sheboygan. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Rev. Armin Duchow; four brothers; and one sister. EMMA SOHN Mrs. Emma Sohn, 75, of 1617 S. Tenth street, passed away Thursday afternoon at St. Nicholas hospital, following a lingering illness. She was born November 6, 1874, at Deer Lodge, Mont., a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Langenhahn. She came to Wisconsin as a girl, and the family settled at Spring Valley. She attended rural schools in that vicinity. On February 20, 1895, she was married to Fred Sohn. The couple lived on a farm in Spring Valley until eight years ago when they moved to Sheboygan. She was a member of St. James Evangelical and Reformed church in Spring Valley. Survivors include eight children, Mrs. Joseph (Leona) Eggebeen, Mrs. Reinhold Schette, Miss Edna Sohn and Louis Sohn, all of Sheboygan; Arthur, Fred and Elmer Sohn of Cleveland and Oliver Sohn of West Bend; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Herman Bohne and Mrs. Adela Sixel of Cleveland, Mrs. Edna Fessler of School Hill and Mrs. William Neuhaus of Colby; and three brothers, Henry Langenhahn of Cleveland, August of School Hill and Edward of Hika. Sohn, age 93, a former village of Cleveland resident, died Saturday, May 6, 1995, at Willowdale Nursing Home, New Holstein, where she and her husband had resided for the past 2 1/2 years. On October 27, 1921, she married Arthur Sohn and the couple resided on the Wolter's homestead in the town of Meeme where they farmed. Upon retirement they moved to Cleveland. She was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley, and a charter member of it's Ladies Aide. She and her husband were members of the Manitowoc Farm Bureau and enjoyed square dancing for many years. FLORENDINE C. SOHN Mrs. Sohn Dies At Hospital Here After An Illness Cleveland. -- (Special) -- Mrs. Charlotte Sohn, 89, died Thursday afternoon at Sheboygan Memorial hospital. She had been ill two and a half weeks but up to that time had been active around the home. Mrs. Sohn was born Charlotte Rehm in Germany on Sept 5 1850 and come to live in the town of Meeme with her parents at the age of two years. At the time of her death she resided with her daughter-in-law Mrs. Fred Sohn, on Highway 149 in the town of Meeme. She was married to Mr. Sohn on March 28, 1868. The couple lived on the homestead farm until 1900 when the husband died. Mrs. Sohn then moved to Sheboygan and 10 years ago went to live on the farm again. Survivors are two children, Louise of Huron, S. Dak., and Herman of northern Minnesota; 19 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, a brother, August of Manitowoc and a sister, Mrs. Marie Wolf, tow of Meeme. A son, Fred, died in 1936. Mrs. Sohn was a member of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church of Sheboygan. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and at 2 o'clock at St. James Evangelical and Reformed church at Spring Valley, the Rev. IDA SOHN Mrs. Ida Sohn, 82, formerly of Spring Valley and a resident of the Toth Nursing Home, Chilton, died Monday at Calumet Memorial Hospital in Chilton. Born Sept, 28, 1884, in the town of Centerville, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Grotogut Bebermeier. She was educated in the district schools. On Jan. 11, 1904, she was married to Julius Sohn of the Town of Centerville. The couple observed their 60th wedding anniversary in 1964. The couple located on a farm in the town of Newton until their retirement in 1947, when they moved to Spring Valley. Mr. Sohn died in April 1964. Mrs. Sohn was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley. JULIUS SOHN Julius L. Sohn, 84, of Spring Valley, a retired Town of Newton farmer, died at his home Saturday evening after an illness of two months. He was born in the Town of Centerville Dec. 25, 1880, a son of the late Philip and Wilhelmina Sohn. He received his education in the district school and was married to Ida Bebermeier of the Town of Newton on Jan. 11, 1904. The couple operated a farm in the Town of Newton until their retirement in 1947, when they moved to Spring Valley. He was a member of St. James United Church of Christ at Spring Valley. The couple observed their 60th wedding anniversary in January of 1964. MILDRED SOHN Mildred A. Sohn, age 89, a resident of Morningside Terrace and formerly of Howards Grove, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at the Beach Health Center of the Sheboygan Retirement Home where she had been a resident the last two weeks. She was born March 22, 1914 in Waukon, Iowa, a daughter of the late August H. and Martha (Becker) Snitker. Mildred Snitker and Roy Sohn were united in marriage Dec. 14, 1939 in Waukon, Iowa. Roy and Mildred farmed in Spring Valley over 27 years, retiring in 1972 then moving to Howards Grove. The couple celebrated their golden wedding in 1989. Roy preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1993. Mildred was a member of St. James United Church of Christ in Spring Valley. Mildred was a kind and caring person and her family was the most important thing in her life. Funeral services for Mildred Sohn will be held Saturday, June 7, 2003 at St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. William Kesting officiating. RONALD SOHN Headon Crash Kills 1; 2 Hurt Manitowoc County’s 17th traffic fatality of the year was recorded Sunday night when a 23-year-old Sheboygan County man died of head injuries sustained in a two-car crash on Highway 141 in the Town of Centerville. Ronald R. Sohn of 114 S. Pershing St., Howard’s Grove, was pronounced dead at the scene by Manitowoc County Coroner James E. Powers. The crash occurred just south of Cleveland in the southeast corner of Manitowoc County. Sohn’s vehicle was southbound on Highway 141 at 9:03 p.m. when it hit the west shoulder and swerved back onto the roadway. It then crossed the centerline, crashing headon into a northbound car driven by (omitted). The Sohn vehicle continued on for 94 feet, coming to rest on the west shoulder. ROGER M. SPINDLER Roger M. Spindler, age 66, of Newton, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his home. He was born on Oct. 27, 1941, in the town of Russell, son of the late Roland and Alice (Hummitzsch) Spindler. Roger attended school in the town of Russell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country from 1959 to 1963. Roger had previously worked at Knowles Manufacturing, Gilson Brothers and Howards Grove Auto Body. He had been employed at Stoelting Manufacturing for 28 years, retiring in 2006. Roger was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids, fishing, gardening, cooking, riding his motorcycle, and working and tinkering with his cars. He further enjoyed spending time with his buddies and many friends. Survivors include his children: Christy (Randy) Staeven, Pulaski; Kay (Mike) Gonnering, Washington; Kelly (Jeff) Muehlbauer, Elkhart Lake; and Karie Maxey and fiancé, Jeremy Ladwig, Newton; and 12 grandchildren: Zachary, Keisha, Wyatt, Brett, Brandy, Bradley, Brittany, Breanna, Jacob and Justin, and Alivia and Bradley. ORVILLA STOECKIGT Orvilla Stoeckigt, age 87, of 12433 County Road F, Newton, died on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, where she had been a patient for two days. Orvilla was born on Jan. 25, 1916 in the town of Schleswig, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late Jacob and Ella Dickman Maurer. On March 2, 1935 she married Walter K. Stoeckigt. The couple farmed in the town of Meeme. Orvilla also worked at Cleveland Canning Factory and as a cook at Stoeckigt's Ballroom. She was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley, and a charter member of the Ladies Aid. She had attended the Senior Center in Cleveland and belonged to the Osman Grandma's Card Club. When in good health she enjoyed traveling, making quilts, playing cards and cooking. Orvilla was the foundation of her family and an inspiration of great strength and courage, extending kindness and caring love to her children and grandchildren. WALTER STOECKIGT Walter K. Stoeckigt, 69, of Route 1, Newton, died Wednesday evening in Sheboygan Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Saturday in St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley. Dr. Reinhardt Ulrich, interim pastor, will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Stoeckigt was born July 27, 1909 in Auma, Germany, son of the late Karl and Milda Schmeisser Stoeckigt. He attended schools in Auma and immigrated to the United States in 1926, locating in the Town of Meeme. He married Selma Karstaedt Oct. 1, 1932. She preceded him in death March 1, 1933. He married Orvilla Maurer March 2, 1935 in the Town of Mosel, locating on a farm in the Town of Meeme, which he operated until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of St. James United Church of Christ and church consistory and former choir member. Mr. Stoeckigt was also a former member of District No. 3 School Board, former committee member and reporter of the A.S.C.S. and former member and officer of the A.M.P.I. Association. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Eugene of Cleveland, Karl of Green Bay and Gary of Kiel; two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Geraldine) Scheffler of route 1, Newton and Mrs. Wayne (Mary Ann) Vogel of Cleveland; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Cyliax and Miss Helene Stoeckigt of Auma, Germany and 16 grandchildren. CLARENCE STOLZMANN Clarence George Stolzmann, age 89, a village of Cleveland resident passed away Saturday July 7, 2001 at Sunny Ridge Nursing Home, Sheboygan where he had been a patient for the past two days. Born February 19, 1912, in the town of Centerville, he was a son of the late William and Laura Neuhaus Stolzmann. He graduated from 8th grade at Pleasant Hill Elementary School. Clarence was united in marriage to Verona Henschel on Nov. 20, 1937, at St. James U.C.C. Spring Valley. The couple resided on the Stolzmann homestead farm until 1941 when they moved to Cleveland. Clarence was employed at Cleveland Hardware and later at R.P. Jost Co. retiring in 1978. He was a member of St. James U.C.C. where he had served on numerous committees. He served as fire chief for the Cleveland Fire Department for many years. VERONA STOLZMANN Verona Emma Stolzmann, 84, village of Cleveland resident, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Morningside Health Center, Sheboygan, where she had been a patient since June. Born Dec. 14, 1917, in the Town of Meeme, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Ella Arnoldi Henschel. On Nov. 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Clarence Stolzmann at St. James U.C.C., Spring Valley. The couple resided on the Stolzmann homestead farm until 1941 when they moved to Cleveland. Clarence preceded her in death July 7, 2001. Verona was a member of St. James U.C.C. and its Ladies Aid. She enjoyed her card clubs and baseball. CHARLEY VOSS Charles Voss, 87, Town of Centerville resident, died Tuesday evening at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, where he had been a patient since Jan. 8. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. James Evangelical and Reformed Church, Spring Valley. The Rev. E. L. Hennig will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Voss was born Aug. 4, 1871, in the Town of Schleswig, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Voss. He married the former Emma Heckmann April 3, 1899, and the couple farmed in the Town of Centerville. Mrs. Voss died in 1947 and Charles continued to live with his son, Stanley, on the home farm. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Hilbert Fries of Centerville; two sons, Roy of Sheboygan and Stanley at home; brother, Fred of Manitowoc; nine grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. ELMIRA VOSS Mrs. Louis (Elmira "Molly") Voss, 73, of 5900 N. 68th St., Milwaukee, died unexpectedly, at her home on Monday, April 24, 1989. The former Elmira Sebald was born October 12, 1915 in Sheboygan, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Krueger Sebald. In 1937 she married Arthur Schwartz and he died in 1959. On July 14, 1962 she married Louis C. Voss of Sheboygan at Ebenezer Reformed Church, Sheboygan and the couple then moved to Milwaukee. Mrs. Voss was employed as a custodian at the State of Wisconsin Motor Vehicle building, Milwaukee, for 16 years, retiring in 1979. She was a member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ, Sheboygan. She is survived by her husband, Louis; a daughter, Mrs. Arlene (Thomas) Slavens, of rural Cleveland; a son, Arthur (Diane) Schwartz, of Sheboygan; two grandchildren, Tiffany C. and Arthur C. LILLIAN VOSS Lillian I. Voss, age 93, a resident of the Manitowoc Health Care Center for many years, died Wednesday, December 18, 1996, at the Health Care Center. Stanley Voss and Lillian Barts were united in marriage August 1, 1925, at Tinity Lutheran Church, Howards Grove. The couple farmed on the Voss Homestead until retirement in 1972. Stanley preceded her in death August 30, 1989. Lillian was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, Spring Valley. She always enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, gardening, crochet work and helping on the farm. RONNIE VOSS Newton Man Is Killed In Sports Car A rural Newton man was killed instantly at 2:01 a.m. today when his sports car went out of control on Highway 42 eight miles north of the Manitowoc - Sheboygan County line. According to a coroner's report Ronnie Voss, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Voss, R. 1. Newton, died of a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from a skull fracture. Capt. Edward McConnell of the Manitowoc County Highway Patrol said the Voss car traveled out of control for 200 feet or more. Traveling south, it sheared off a mail box and a utility pole, rolled over several times and came to rest near a milk house on a farm operated by Don Karstaedt. The 1960 model Triumph was described as a complete wreck. Immediate cause of the accident could not be determined. Capt. McConnell said the mishap was on a straight, dry stretch of road in open country. Voss' death brought the 18th Manitowoc County traffic fatality of the year. He was born on Feb. 16, 1939, in the Town of Meeme. He attended rural school at Osman, and was baptized and confirmed at St. James Evangelical Reformed Church at Spring Valley by the Rev. STANLEY VOSS Stanley W. Voss, 87, a resident of Manitowoc Health Center and formerly of Newton, died August 30, 1989 at the center. He was born June 30, 1902 in the Town of Centerville, son of the late Charles and Erma Heckmann Voss. Lillian Barts and Stanley Voss were united in marriage on August 1, 1925 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Howards Grove. After marriage the couple farmed on the homestead in the Town of Centerville, retiring in 1972. Stanley was a member of St James United Church of Christ, in Spring Valley. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and playing cards. Survivors of Stanley W. HARVEY WAGNER Mr. Harvey J. Wagner, 75, of 1402 N. 28th St., died unexpectedly Tuesday, September 22, 1992 at his daughter's residence at 1316 N. 28th St. Mr. Wagner was born Feb. 7, 1917 in the Town of Centerville, Manitowoc County to the late William and Nora Zill Wagner. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army, serving in Europe and he received the Purple Heart Medal. On April 4, 1945 he married Lorena Schwartz of Town Meeme, Manitowoc County. Mr. and Mrs. Wagner made their home in Sheboygan, then at Millersville and returned to Sheboygan in 1966. Mr. Wagner was employed at Schultz Sav-O Stores Inc. for 30 years and retired in 1974. Harvey was a member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ, Schultz Sav-O Quarter Century Club and Jensen Van Thruler Chapter 15, D.A.V. Survivors are his wife, Lorena, one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Dale St. Thomas, Sheboygan; one granddaughter, Sara; two brothers, Norman (Alice) Wagner, Manitowoc and George Wagner, Kiel. LORENA WAGNER Mrs. Lorena E. Wagner, 78, a resident of Sunny Ridge Nursing Home, since October of 1994, died there Thursday evening, March 6, 1997. Lorena was born April 3, 1918 in the Town of Meeme, Manitowoc County to John and Louisa Oehmichen Schwartz. On April 4, 1945 she married Harvey J. Wagner. The couple made their home in Sheboygan and later Millersville, before returning to Sheboygan in 1966, where they resided on North 28th Street. Mr. Wagner, a long time employee of Schultz Sav-O Stores, Inc., preceded her in death on September 22, 1992. Mrs.Wagner was a member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife and four daughters, Mrs. Elsie Belitz of Port Washington, Mrs. Erma Sohn at home, Mrs. Lorraine Artmann, Jackson and Mrs. Leona Sohn, Cleveland; two grandchildren and two brothers, Max Wlters of Town Mosel and Fred Walters, Sheboygan Falls. The body was removed to the Walter H. Ahrens Funeral Home at Howards Grove and will be taken to his home this afternoon where funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 pm and at 2 pm at St. James Evangelical Church, Spring Valley. The Rev. Carl Schmahl will officiate and interment will be made at the church cemetery. The casket wil not be opened at the church. Friends may view the body from 7 o'clock tonight on.
