Robinson of the Town of Mishicot almost lost their lives in a barn fire in the Town of Mishicot Saturday morning. The barn was struck by lightning while they were inside at an early hour. Mrs. Robinson was engaged in milking close between two of the cows when the strike came and Mrs. Robinson had just closed the barn door and came back inside. Both were knocked down by the bolt and were unconscious. There was no one near to render assistance but after a short time, Robinson recovered consciousness when much of the barn was already wrapped in flames. He immediately went to his wife's assistance. He picked her up for dead between the cows which had been killed but had fortunately fallen outward instead of toward each other or they would have crushed the woman. After working over Mrs. Robinson a few minutes she began to show signs of returning life and Robinson rushed back into the burning barn to save something. He succeeded in getting the horse to the door when it tore away and went back to it's death and all he was able to save was a harness. With the barn all of the season's crops were destroyed and also four cows and a horse. The barn was insured but the contents not and the loss is a severe one. Mr. Robinson sustained bad burns on his arm and hand. Mrs. Robinson also shows burns on her head and face. For a time, it was feared she had lost the sight of one eye. JOHN G. SCHEUER (d. 1916) Notes from Mishicot: John Scheuer, one of the oldest settlers of Mishicot, died last week, aged 81 years. He was born March 2, 1835(sic) in Germany. In 1847 his parents came to the United States with three children, Joseph, John and Catherine and landing at New York took a steamer on the Hudson River to Albany. From that city, they went by train to Buffalo and on July 4, they headed for Milwaukee landing after a four days' trip. The family then came to the town of Two Rivers and located on what is now known as the Mishicot Road, then but a trail, where they took up 80 acres of wild land. For many years, he owned and operated the brewery here. John remained at home until he was married to Miss Catherine Gueif, a native of Luxemberg, who came to the Unites States with a sister. After remaining with his father for three years, he moved on his farm in section 17, Town of Mishicot, then a tract of 80 acres of wild land. He was an industrious farmer and good neighbor. He is survived by a widow and four sons, John, Chas., Nick and Joseph and two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Frank and Mrs. Arnold Zander. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Nov. 30, 1916 ********* COUNTY PIONEER CALLED BY DEATH Jos. Scheuer(sic) of Mishicot Came Here With His Parents in 1847 WENT TO MISHICOT SCHOOL Underwent Great Hardships in Early Years; A Farmer All His Life Jos. Scheuer, one of the old pioneer residents of Mishicot died on Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Andrew Frank. Deceased was born March 2, 1835 in the Rhine Province, Germany, a son of Nic and Catherine Scheuer. In 1847, Mr. Scheuer's parents came to the United States with their three children, Joseph, John and Catherine and landing in New York, took a steamer on the Hudson river to Albany. From that city, they went by train to Buffalo and on July 4th, between four and five o'clock they cleared for Milwaukee, landing after a four days' trip, between nine and ten o'clock at the pier, there being no harbor there in that year. The family then came to the Town of Two Rivers and located on what is now known as the Mishicot Road, then but a trail where they took up eighty acres of wild land, at a time when bears and wolves were numerous in the forest and hardships many and conveniences none. The father built a log cabin twenty by twenty-six feet and a log barn and the family set to work to clear the land. Joseph Scheuer attended school in Germany for six years and completed his education in the schools of Mishicot, afterward remaining at home until he was married to Miss Catherine Gueif, a native of Luxemburg, who came to the United States with a sister. After remaining with his father for three years he moved on his farm on Section 17, Town of Mishicot, then a tract of eighty acres of wild land where he built a log cabin and began a farm with a yoke of steers. Here he died at the home of his daughter. He was an industrious and successful farmer and neighborly citizen, a staunch example of the pioneers of the middle west. Funeral was held at Mishicot Wednesday morning, the ceremonies being performed by Rev. Father Bastian, assisted by Rev. Father Beile of Holy Cross Church. Mr. Scheuer is survived by a widow and four sons, John, Chas., Nick and Jos., and two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Frank and Mrs. Arnold Zander The Reporter, Fri., Nov. 24, 1916 ********* Correction: Last week in publishing the obituary notice for Mr. Scheuer, we got the facts through the telephone and in some details did not get them straight. Deceased was born in 1839 and has for 27 years been proprietor of the Mishicot Brewery. John G. Scheuer received but a meager education in the district school and was engaged in farming pursuits on the home farm until 1872 when on the death of his father he took over the operation of the farm conducted the same until 1884. In that year he purchased the old Linsted Brewery in Michicot which had been built in the years 1864 to 1865. Mr. Scheuer has conducted the brewery up to the present time and has increased its capacity from about eight hundred barrels to between four and five thousand. He was married in 1862 to Miss Francis Paulu, a native of Bohemia who survives him. After the death of his father, Nicholas, John G. Scheuer conducted the farm until 1884. His death closed a very successful career. In relating the facts of the Scheuer's family arrival here, etc. in 1947 and other particulars, the article of last week's issue was correct.
