GUSTAV EGGERT Two Creeks News DIED – Mr. Gustave Eggert of Mishicott town died last week from the effects of blood poisoning contracted from a horse infected with glanders. He was one of the pioneers of the county, coming here in the early fifties. He was an upright neighbor and a fond and loving father. He raised a large family of children and gave them all a good common school education. His body was interred from the Lutheran church in the cemetery near Maak's, a few miles west of here. Manitowoc County Chronicle - Tues., Aug. 24, 1894 ******** A man named Eggert whose home has been in the town of Mishicott died last week at the Manitowoc hospital of a disease which his physicians pronounced glanders. It seems that he owned a glandered horse a few years ago and that some of the drippings from the nostrils of the diseased animal accidentally got into a sore upon his hands, thus innoculating him with that terrible disease. A few years ago, Capt. Dow of Manitowoc died from the same cause. Manitowoc County Chronicle - Tues., Aug. 24, 1894 ******** Death last week, in the hospital, of Gustav Eggert, a resident of Mishicott. He died of blood poisoning as a result of an open wound being infected from a “snotsick” (rotzkranken) horse. Der Nord Westen, 30 Aug. 1894 ******* A man by the name of Eggert living in the town of Mishicott recently contracted the glanders from a horse, which, if reports of its previous condition are true, has suffered from the disease for several years. The man evidently knew nothing of the true condition of the horse and became infected with the disease while caring for the animal, a portion of the discharge from the horse’s nostrils coming in contact with his hand on which there was a slight abrasion of the skin. Dr. Pritchard who had charge of the patient, says that this is the second case of this masture on record in the county. The man died on Tuesday last at the Polish hospital and was buried Wednesday. Mr. Lehrman's death was due to diabetes from which he had been a sufferer for some time. He had been seriously ill but one week. Mr. Lehrman was elected sheriff of Manitowoc County on the democratic ticket in the campaign of 1898, succeeding Christ Muth and he served one term, never having been a candidate for re-election. He was genial, whole souled and number his friends by the legion. Since his retirement from public life, Mr. Lehrman had made his home on a farm in Two Creeks and was one of the most prominent men of that section in which he made his home. Though friends had know that Mr. Lehrman was not well, his condition was not thought to be serious at any time and the news of his death was a shock in the city. After his term expired he again took up the duties of farm life on the old homestead and remained there until about six years ago when he purchased a part of the Pfister estate and moved to Two Creeks which has been his home. Mr. Lehrman has been the most prominent man in our town for many years being the leader in every project that was beneficial to our town. He was chairman of our town for many years and was chairman of the county board at Manitowoc during the construction of the Court House at which time he extended great influence. After Mr. Lehrman retired from the Chairman's office he started the Two Creeks Co-operative Cheese Co. and to him its success is due, more than to any other man being president of this Cheese Co. to the time of his death. CHAS. MAACK MISHICOTT MAN WHO HAD NOT BEEN HEARD FROM IN 30 YEARS, KILLED AT MILWAUKEE BY AUTO Identity of Charles Maack Established After Death and Burial, Relatives Bring Body to Mishicott for Interment Missing for more than thirty years during which time relatives had received no word of him, Charles Maack, former Mishicot man, died at Milwaukee March 1, was buried in that city as an unknown, was later identified by relatives here and the body disinterred and shipped to Mishicot for reburial. The body of Mr. Maack was brought here from Milwaukee, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Soenksen of Chicago. Mr. Soenksen is a nephew. The remains were taken to Mishicot where burial was held today. Thirty years ago, Charles Maack, whose parents resided three miles northeast of Mishicot was employed in the old tannery of the Pfister and Vogel Co. at Two Creeks. One day he announced his intention of leaving and took his departure and from that day until a week or ten days ago, relatives had no trace of the man, though it is said he had been employed at Milwaukee in the tannery of the same company there. On February 24, Maack was run down by an automobile in the streets of Milwaukee and sustained injuries which caused his death on March 1. Through publication of the details of the accident and name of the injured man, relatives here finally learned of the whereabouts of the long missing relative. Friends of the family at Milwaukee, who were informed of the long absence of Maack and who, with his relatives had believed the man dead, were attracted by the similarity of names of the missing man and the injured and started an investigation, the result of which, however, did not become certain until after the death and burial of Maack, when his identity was established. The request of relatives here and at Chicago for permission to disinter the body was granted by Milwaukee officials, the identity of the dead man established as that of the missing Mishicot man and permit for removal of the body was given. Mr. Maack was a man past fifty years of age and is well remembered at Mishicot and the vicinity. Why he should reside within 130 miles of his home for thirty years and not visit relatives or even communicate with them is a mystery that will probably never be known. Henry Pentzen, who at one time was a tavern keeper in Tisch Mills, then farmed and finally moved to Manitowoc several years ago, has lost a son from an accident in the northern Wisconsin lumber camp. The body has been brought to Two Creeks for burial in the Maack cemetery there. Der Nord Westen, 02 Feb. 1905 *********** Edward Pentzien of here was killed Fri. in an accident near Kempster, Langlade County, while working in a lumber camp. While at work he was hit by a falling tree and so badly injured that he died a few hours after the accident. His brother August barely miss being injured by the same falling tree. The deceased’s father, Henry Pentzien, also works in the same camp…. The body was brought to Two Creeks for burial. He was 19 yrs. old. Der Nord Westen, 02 Feb. 1905 ********** MANITOWOC YOUTH KILLED BY FALLING TREE Struck on the head by a falling tree in the woods at Kempster, Langlade county, last Friday afternoon, Edward Pentzien of this city was fatally injured. His skull was fractured and one arm was broken. The unfortunate youth was at once taken to the camp and a physician was hurriedly summoned. But the injured boy was beyond medical aid, and after six hours of severe suffering death put an end to his agony. Henry Pentzien, the father of the deceased, and August, an elder brother, who were working in the same camp, that of the Barth and Meyer company at Kempster, near Antigo, at once made arrangements to bring the remains here for interment, and they arrived here with the body on the late train Saturday night, when the remains were taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pentzien (South Fifteenth street), parents of the deceased. August and Edward Pentzien and their father left for the northern woods on the 10th of October last. Several other young men of this city left for the pineries at the same time. It seems that Edward, who was only 19 years old, was advised to remain at home but he insisted on going, and had worked in the woods since. For some time past the two brothers and the father had been employed at the camp mentioned. Friday afternoon the men were engaged in felling trees. The brothers were at work on the same tree, felling it by sawing. When the tree started to fall, they tried to get out of the way. But the tree fell on a hillock and rebounded with great force which carried it a considerable distance from the place where it was expected to fall and where it did fall originally. August narrowly escaped being caught by the tree, but Edward was crushed under it and pinned to the ground. It required much effort on the part of six men to release the youth. Five men at work near the scene of the accident having immediately hurried to the assistance of the unfortunate youth. It was at first thought hat the injuries were not fatal, but by the time the physician arrived it had become apparent that the youth was beyond all human aid The deceased had resided here for three years past, having removed to the city with his parents from a farm at Tisch Mills. For some time he was employed by the J.G. Johnson Co. The funeral was held Tuesday morning from the home of the parents on South Fifteenth street, interment taking place at the cemetery near Tisch Mills. The Manitowoc Pilot, February 2, 1905
