CLARENCE FISCHER An extremely unfortunate accident occurred last Thurs. in Town Kossuth. Louis Fischer operates a cheese factory there. The family lives above the factory. On that day, Mrs. Fischer left her 18-mo. old child alone for a moment to help her husband with his work. She heard a terrible cry of fear from the child and returned to the living quarters to find her baby engulfed in flames. VILAS FISCHER Fischer - The dreaded disease of diphtheria caused the death Thursday evening of little Vilas, the eleven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Fischer of Rockland. Medical aid was called in too late to save the child's life, the doctors not having been summoned until Thursday forenoon. Antitoxin was used but the disease had gained too much headway and the boy passed away about 9 pm. Vilas was a bright, lovable child who will be sadly missed from the home circle and by his many little school friends, who with his teacher, were present Friday at his funeral. Rev. Detert officiated at the burial service. Every precaution has been taken to prevent the further spreading of the disease although many have been exposed at the Fischer home, the boy having been sick since Monday. Manitowoc Herald Times – January, 1978 ********* Joel Krueger is Murdered Breezewood, Pa. – A former Reedsville man was one of three persons found shot to death within five miles of this Bedford County community. The man, Joel M. Krueger, 36 of Altoona, pa., was the son of Mrs. Sally Krueger, 719A N. Fifth St., Manitowoc and Milan Krueger of Reedsville. The other two victims were identified as Guy and Laura Mills, both 65 who were discovered in their ransacked home about 7 a.m. New Years’ Day. Three hours later a truck driver discovered Krueger’s body in a parked car along Interstate 70 in Fulton County three miles from the Mills’ home. All three had been killed with a shot gun. Police said robbery was the apparent motive in both killings. A wallet was found near Krueger’s car. “Our investigation is intensive but it has not been extremely productive”, said Lt. Raymond Minternowski, head of the State Police task force set up to probe the killings. “There is no way we can establish that the same shot gun was used.” He said “but we just don’t have that many homicides in this rural area without some relationship.” Mrs. Krueger said her son had spent Christmas with his family in Wisconsin before leaving for Pennsylvania December 26. He was chief of volunteer services at the Altoona Veterans Hospital. Krueger graduated from Reedsville High School in 1960. He received a bachelor of science degree in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1969 and a Master of Arts Degree from Roosevelt University, Chicago June 2. He was an Air Force Veteran and had been employed at the Altoona Veteran Hospital for the past three years. Penn State Police said a team of about 20 investigators had begun extensive interviews with people staying in the Breezewood area. However, they said the number of hotels and motels in the area would pose an investigative stumbling block. Breezewood is a small town that caters to truck drivers and travelers who routes pass the intersection of Interstate 70, the Penn Turnpike and U.S. 30. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday in the United Methodist church, Reedsville. Reedsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. REUBEN OTTO REEDSVILLE MAN MEETS DEATH, BODY FOUND IN FIELD Reuben Otto, a well known young farmer residing about two miles from Reedsville, met his death yesterday while operating a tractor in a field on his farm, Otto’s dead body was found in the field on his farm. Otto’s dead body was found in the field when search was made for him when he failed to return after starting out for work. Otto was pinioned by the steering wheel of the tractor as it reared into the air while he was attempting to force the machine out of the mire into which he had driven it in attempting to drive through a ditch about thirty feet wide and in which there was water. Otto had been at work in the field until 4:30 in the afternoon and in the early evening returned to complete some work he desired to finish. Fifty feet from the place where he attempted to drive through the ditch was a crossing which had been used in getting over and which was always used even with a team but Otto probably desired to test the tractor and attempted to get through in the soft ground. When the body was found there were two rails under the rear wheel of the tractor, showing that Otto had attempted to extricate himself after getting mired and the theory is that when the rear wheel struck the rails, the tractor reared and Otto was thrown from his seat and caught by the steering wheel. He was dead when found. The machine was a Fordson, purchased at Reedsville by Mr. Otto a short time ago. The dead man was a son of William Otto and one of the well known young farmers of that section. He is survived by his wife, a bride of less than a year and by his parents. William Otto, father of the dead man said that even with a team no attempt had ever been made to drive through the sluiceway in which the tractor had been driven. Otto had been using a disc and also had a plow hooked onto the tractor at the time of the fatal accident. Priebe – The sad tidings of a young life ended and a happy home made desolate was conveyed to Reedsville relatives and friends Monday morning by the ringing of the Ev. Zion Church bell which tolled the death of Mrs. Fred Priebe of Potter, daughter of Mr. Alb. Fischer of this village. The home which was one of supreme happiness last week when the family circle was brightened by the arrival of a baby boy is today left in sorrow from that circle earth's dearest treasure has been taken away and the father and child left to mourn the loss of the young mother who at the age of twenty-four years was chosen by the Supreme Father to leave this land and live in that Brighter Home above. Besides the husband and baby the deceased leaves a sorrowing father and mother, one brother, John Fischer and one sister, Leona Fischer to grieve that one so young had to leave them so soon. Hers was a life of gentleness, loved by all for her kindly disposition and gentle ways, the sympathy of the community goes to the stricken family. The funeral took place Wednesday at 1:30 pm from Ev. Church in this village, Rev. Sippel of Brillion officiating. Burial taking place in the Ev. Zion Cemetery southeast of this village. The many floral tributes attested to the esteem of sorrowing frieneds. Another soul has “crossed the bar.”

EMILIE RUSCH Mrs. Emilie Rusch whose sudden death was announced in last week’s issue of Reporter was buried Sunday from her late home and from the Ev. Zion Church to the Ev. Cemetery, south east of this village. The funeral cortege being one of the largest ever seem here, more than one hundred autos following the remains to their final resting place attesting to the high esteem of her sorrowing friends and relatives for hers was a life well spent, a loving mother and kind and generous neighbor. None who entered her home ever left without a kindly welcome and a feeling of good will and generosity; for to make others happy was one of the aims of her life and with one accord the heartfelt sorrow of all is felt that henceforth earthly scenes have vanished for their esteemed relative and friend whose death brought sorrow to all who knew her best. Mrs. Rusch was born in Rockland fifty-four years ago. Her husband, Herman Rusch died thirteen years ago and after his death she removed to Reedsville, accompanied by her sons, August, Walter and Otto, where she erected a home. Five children, William, August, Bertha, (Mrs. F. Schmidt), Walter and Otto, two brothers, Albert and Wm. Moede and two sisters, Mrs. Schubring of Forest Junction and Mrs. Schley of Marshfield survive. The ground upon which the present Ev. Zion Church is built and one of its beautiful stained glass art windows is an evidence of her generosity and kindness both being donations from the deceased lady. Brillion News – October 13, 1916
