William A. Roehr, foreman of the shipping department of the Kiel Furniture Company, is a native of the town, his birth having occurred at his present residence on the 7th of August, 1879. His father, Albert Roehr, was born in the province of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on the 2d of February, 1835. When a youth of sixteen years he emigrated to the United States with his parents, Franz and Minnie (Huebner) Roehr. They came direct to Manitowoc county, settling on a farm in Schleswig township, and there passed the remainder of their lives. Albert Roehr remained on his father’s farm until he was twenty-three years of age, when he left home and came to Kiel. He found employment in the Kiel Lye Factory, and was identified with this enterprise for many years. During the latter period of his life he was village custodian, and had charge of the town lights. He married Minnie Mathes, a daughter of William Mathes, a pioneer of Potter, which contained but two settlers when he located here. Albert Roehr passed away in 1898, at the age of sixty-three years, but his wife, who was sixty-five at the time of her death, survived him until 1908. Their family numbered fourteen, seven of whom are still living. In order of birth these are as follows: Rosa, the wife of H. Munier, a resident of Kiel; Frank, who is living in Chicago; Mary, who married William Berhend, of Plymouth, Wisconsin; Lottie, the wife of Louis Meixner, of Milwaukee, this state; Ida, who married Elmer May, of Galena, Illinois; Herman, who is a resident of Kiel; and William A., our subject. He began work in the factory where he is now employed and has ever since been in the service of this company, a period of twenty years. At first his hours were long and his duties hard for a boy of his age, and he received only a dollar and a half a week. He was diligent and faithful and applied himself intelligently to acquiring a fuller knowledge of the business. His employers recognized his worth and promoted him in accordance with the ability he manifested. In 1900 he was made foreman of the shipping department, and has ever since held this position. In 1905 Mr. Roehr was united in marriage to Miss Ella Prueter, who was born in Sheboygan county, on the 10th of April, 1885, the only daughter of Carl and Sophia (Somner) Prueter. EDMUND AND HELMUTH ROSE Two Brothers are Drowned Near Kiel on Sunday One Loses Life Trying a Rescue Elder of the Rose Brothers Drowns Trying to Rescue Younger Brother Kiel, Wis., - (Special) – Two brothers who could not swim, Helmuth Rose, 17, and Edmond(sic) Rose, 13, lost their lives in Sheboygan river near Kiel at 2 p.m. Sunday. The younger brother drowned first, and his older brother lost his life in an heroic attempt to save him. The double tragedy occurred near Rockville, which is located not far from Kiel. The boys started bathing there when Edmond suddenly went down in a deep hole where there was a strong current. Helmuth hurried to his rescue, but also was pulled under by the current. A witness to the tragedy who could not get to the boys in time to save them, rushed to a neighbor’s home for help. The neighbor in turn called to Kiel fire department to have them drag the river for the bodies. Edmond’s body was not recovered until 4 p.m., and Helmuth’s body an hour later. Funeral Wednesday The bodies of the youths were taken to the C. J. Meiselwitz funeral parlors in Kiel and will be removed to the home of their parents near Kiel, where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. At 2 p.m. services will be held at St. Peter’s Reformed church. The victims are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. William Rose, who came to this country from Alten-Essen in Rhinelander, Germany, about seven years ago. The family originally settled at Brillion, but came to their farm near Kiel in 1926. Both boys were born in Germany. The survivors include their parents, two brothers, Alfred of Milwaukee, and Walter of Hinsdale, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Axnichs of Milwaukee, and Miss Anna Rose of Milwaukee. The mother of the boys has been hysterical since the tragedy and is in the care of a physician. The Sheboygan Press – Monday, July 24, 1933 – Front Page ********* Victims of Double Drowning Laid to Rest at Kiel Today Kiel – Impressive funeral services for Helmuth Rose, 16, and Edmund Rose, age 13, brothers, who were the victims of drowning in the Sheboygan river, near Kiel, on Sunday afternoon, were held at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Rose, near Kiel, this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, followed by services at the St. Peter Reformed church here at 2 o’clock. Because of the absence of the Rev. E. L. Worthman, pastor of the church, who left on Sunday afternoon with his family on a vacation, the bereaved family requested that the Rev. H. P. Jordon of Seymoure, a very close friend of the Rose family and of the Rev. Mr. Worthman, to officiate at the last sad rites. The Rev. Jordon’s sermon was impressive as well as consoling. The members of the Senior choir of the church sang, “Engel Des Friedens,” “Hoert Vas Des Vater’s Stimme Sprigt,” and “Sicher In Jesu Armen.” Pallbearers for Helmuth were the following: D. H. Drumm, Edward Reineck, Gustave Stoelting Jr., Victor Kaufmann, Willis Fluhr, and Erwin Schmidt. Six boys of the confirmation class of the St. Peter Reformed church of this year, of which Edmund was a member acted as his pallbearers. They were: Wilfred Schreiber, Willard Stecker, Elmer Schneider, Melvin Baumann, Melvin Happel, and Melvin Ruh. The Rockville school children, classmates of Edmund, and the members of the confirmation class attended the funeral in a body at the home and at the church. Burial was made in the Kiel cemetery. The home of the bereaved family was visited by about two hundred friends and relatives on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from far and near who came to express their deepest sympathy to the Rose family. The auditorium in the church was filled to capacity and it was difficult to accommodate all the people. The many beautiful floral tributes which were offered showed the highest esteem in which the two youths were held. Relatives and friends from Milwaukee, Seymour, Brillion, Reedsville, Hinsdale, Plymouth, Chilton, Hilbert, Sheboygan, New Holstein, Kiel and vicinity attended the funeral. This funeral was one of the largest ever held within the last three years. The Sheboygan Press – Wednesday, July 26, 1933 – P. 4
