CONRAD RAMMINGER Conrad Ramminger, a citizen of Schleswig, Manitowoc Co., Wis., was born Dec. 21, 1840 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. He came from his native land to the New World, in the last year of his minority and enrolled in the military service of his adopted county. He enlisted at Detroit, Mich., Aug. 15, 1861 under the second call for troops by President Lincoln, Michigan Volunteer Infantry, for three years. His regiment left Detroit and proceeded to camp at Monroe’s Hill, Ky., near Munfordsville, where the winter of 1861-2 was passed in guard duty and drill. The first movement of the command was to Nashville in the spring where they arrived in March. From that time Forrest was planning his raids and a few days after their arrival the 9th went to Murfreesboro to assist in repairing the devastations of the rebels, and on the 13th of July sustained a direct attack from the 8th Texas while in camp, and Mr. Ramminger received a severe wound, his Col (Duffield) also being injured. The former was struck by a minie ball in his right thigh, and by a buckshot in his face on the nose near the right eye. His company was in the courthouse, which was surrounded by a Georgia regiment and compelled to surrender, after repulsing the rebels twice. Mr. Ramminger was in the hands of his captors three days, when he was paroled and sent to Camp Chase. In October following, his exchange was effected and the Union soldiers were sent to the headquarters of General Thomas as a body-guard. The route was made from Cincinnati to Covington, Ky., Louisville, and Nashville. In December the command was despatched to Murfreesboro to prepare for the battle known as Stone River, on the last day of the year and several of the first days of 1863. The 9th Michigan (being an unassigned command) was detailed to guard prisoners. They stayed there until the Tullahoma campaign, when they were again in a movement that promised results. But the troops dispersed to meet at Chickamauga, and the 9th Michigan went to Chattanooga and the regiment was in the lines of General Sherman in the march through Georgia. Mr. Ramminger was in all the fights, including Resaca, Dallas, Kenesaw Mountain, and Peach Tree Creek, arriving at Atlanta, where he participated in the siege. A few days after the surrender, Oct. 14th, Mr. Ramminger was honorably discharged, his period of service having expired. He is still a sufferer from the consequences of his injuries at rebel hands. He was married to Mathilda Ball, at Schleswig, and they became the parents of nine children. A son and daughter died in infancy. Those still living are named Henry, Jacob, John, William, Anna, Rosa and Margaretha. The mother died and Mr. Ramminger was married to Catherine Wagoner, in Schleswig in 1884. He is one of the prominent, reliable and prosperous farmers of the section of Wisconsin where he resides. From “Soldiers and Citizens Album of Biographical Record” 997.5

JACOB RAMMINGER CALL IN “SEER” TO HELP FIND MISSING MAN They have enrolled the services of a “seer” in the hunt about Kiel for Jacob Ramminger, 54 year old farmer, who has been missing since April 22. He dropped from sight at the same time that his wife, Mary heard a shot ring out over their farm. Ramminger is reported to be worth $75,000 and the owner of a $25,000 farm and investigation of his bank account showed that he had not withdrawn any funds. A posse of farmers and Boy Scouts combed the wooded lands surrounding his farm but were unable to find a trace of him. In desperation the family turned to A. P. Roberts of Milwaukee, self styled seer and possessor of occult powers for aid. He was there this week to tell the family, if possible, the whereabouts of the missing man. About a mile behind the farm is a body of water known as Mud Lake, and it is feared Mr. Ramminger either may have drowned in this lake or have been slain and weighted down and tossed into the water. Manitowoc Herald News, June 12, 1929 ****** Four young boys, Walter Perl, Sheboygan, Martin Simpson, Ray Miller and Arthur Bub of Kiel, late yesterday afternoon discovered the lower part of the body of Jacob Ramminger, Kiel resident who killed himself with dynamite some time ago. According to the story they told the sheriff this morning, they were engaged in picking water lilies when they noticed a shoe protruding above the water line and the investigation resulting in the pulling up of the lower extremities of Ramminger’s body. Because the lower part was held beneath the surface by part of a rowboat the theory was advanced by Deputy Sheriff A. F. O’Leske that Ramminger was in a boat in the stream at the time he discharged the dynamite sticks which killed him. Part of his body was found several weeks ago, about 300 feet from where the rest was found yesterday. Manitowoc Herald News, July 6, 1929 ******* Notes from Kiel: A mystery of almost two months has been cleared. The body of Jacob Ramminger, who had been missing from home since April 22, was found late Saturday afternoon by Edwin Voight, cheesemaker living near Kiel, who with Arthur Raquet, an employe, had gone fishing on the river. The body was found just off the shore of the river about a mile and a half south of Kiel. All evidence points toward death from an explosion of dynamite. Identification was made by fingerprints of one hand, one of which was crippled and another being only a stub. The body itself was badly mutilated. The deceased was born on the farm on which he resided his entire life, February 18, 1875. On April 25, 1897 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Wagner. He is survived by his wife and seven children. Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Otto Saewert of the St. Peter Reformed church of the city conducting the rites. Interment was made in the Kiel cemetery. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs, June 20, 1929

WILLIAM RESEBURG (d. 1905) On Monday afternoon, a long time resident of Kiel passed away, namely the well know person of the area, Mr. Wilhelm Reseburg. He died here in his home after a lingering illness of bronchitis (Croup or inflammation of the windpipe). Mr. Reseburg comes from Rothemuehle, the province of Pomerania, Germany where he first saw the light of the world on March 18, 1846. In 1868 he came to America, and shortly there after to Kiel. At first he worked as a building contractor with the now deceased Mr. F. Griebenow and later managed a lumber yard near the sawmill, also a furniture company and a syrup mill. After which he moved to Green Bay for a few years and then to Plymouth where he operated an inn. In 1892 he returned to Kiel, where he took over operation of a hall from Mr. Wm. Koehring, that is now owned by Mr. Chas. Redemann. In the last years he operated a lighting rod business. The marriage, which he entered into in 1870 with Ernestine Michler, produced eight children of which five are still living; namely Mrs. Chas Redemann, Hulda, Walter, Etta and Wilhelm. The burial will take place this afternoon at the Kiel Cemetery with Pastor Rech officiating.
