EDWIN FAUST Train Kills Boy, 14, Fishing Off Bridge A 14 year old Town of Schleswig (Manitowoc County) farm boy was killed instantly early Thursday evening when struck by a Milwaukee Road passenger train, The Chippewa, while fishing off a railroad bridge over the Sheboygan River in the Town of Rhine. The victim is Edwin Faust, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Faust, whose farm home is on highway 67, nearly two miles south of Kiel on the Manitowoc Sheboygan county line. The railroad bridge where Edwin was struck by the southbound train is about a mile and a half southwest of his home, in Sheboygan County. According to Dr. Reed M. Simpson, county coroner, who was called to the scene along with four sheriff's deputies, the boy was struck shortly after 7 PM, as he fished off the railroad trestle. He had laft home about 6 o'clock, his parents said, riding his bicycle to the nearby home of his sister, and walking across fields another mile to the bridge. The Chippewa conductor, Edward Radue of Plymouth, said today that his engineer, Joseph Donkers of Green bay, first saw the boy near the north end of the bridge. He began running to the south away from the approaching train, which struck him toward the south end, throwing the body up against a concrete abutment and back onto the tracks. Deputies Use Boat Radue said the train was moving between 30 and 35 miles an hour at the time. The engineer stopped and Radue went back to the body which was found about 10 feet south of the south end of the trestle. The conductor stationed his flagman, Carl Matthews of Green Bay, beside the badly mangled body, and proceded south to Elkhart Lake where he notified the sheriff's department. The call was answered by deputies Harvey Feld, Frank Bunzel, Vernon Schauer and Henry Hoppert, who used rowboats to reach the bridge. There is no road nearby. The body was taken back to the highway by the deputies and to the Meiselwitz funeral home in the Kiel Ambulance. The boy's fish pole, his shirt, and a fish bag were found scattered along the railroad ties north of where the body was found. Dr. Simpson said the boy, who died instantly, had a skull fracture, broken legs, and was generally crushed about the lower part of his body. He said no inquest will be necessary in the accidental death. ROGENE FAUST The family of Rogene Faust celebrates the life of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother. On Dec. 5, 2014, Mom finished a life distinguished by devotion to family and service to her church and community. It began May 3rd, 1925 when she was born to Carl and Marie (Henning) Zimmerman of Kiel. She attended Kiel schools and during World War II, worked at the Manitowoc Shipyards and eventually at Kiel's Hansen Glove Factory. On April 12, 1947 she married Alois Faust(sic) at Trinity Church in School Hill. They welcomed six children, Susan (Elmer) Casper PhD, of Shakopee, MN, Andrew (Sue) Faust of Sun Prairie, Gary (Laurie) Faust of Valders, John (Judy) Faust of Cascade, Sheila (Joe) Mader of Manitowoc and Cindy (Jeff) Goebel of Sheboygan; 16 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Mom and Dad worked annually at the VFW stand at Road America and for more than 20 years, Mom organized and directed funeral lunches at the church. In addition, she worked at Tecumseh and drove a school bus for the Kiel School District. Dad died on Sept. 2, 1990 and Mom was alone until her marriage to Clarence Faust (Dad's cousin) on Feb. 15, 1992. The two continued volunteer service at the church, volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul store and at Road America where they ran the Kiwanis stand. By the time Clarence died on April 29, 2014, Mom was already a resident of Oak Creek Assisted Living in Kiel where she remained until her death. She received tender, extraordinary care during her residency at Oak Creek for which we are so very grateful. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Alois Faust and Clarence Faust, her parents, three sisters, two brothers. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and brothers Robert (Ruth) Zimmerman, Dale (Nancy) Zimmerman; sister-in-law, Betty Zimmerman; Clarence's daughter, Sandra Faust-Lomblo of Wauwatosa along with brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Visitors may greet the family on Monday, Dec. 5, 2014 from 10:00 am until 11:45 am when we will have brief family rites at SS Peter and Paul Church (413 Fremont St., Kiel) followed by a 12:00 pm Mass of Christian Burial. Mom will be buried next to Dad in the SS Peter and Paul Cemetery. We invite all visitors to lunch at the church. Two of the family's siblings spent an inordinate amount of time caring for Mom and Clarence. Over the years, Gary Faust has regularly dropped whatever he was doing to solve problems or rescue them froom whatever they were stymied or stranded - even as far away as Branson, MO. During the same time and in particular the past two years, Cindy Goebel was there on a daily basis, helping them make decisions taking the to appointments, working with caregivers and looking out for them.
