Pethan, 90, of 1010 First St., Kiel and currently a resident of Field of Dreams Assisted Living, Kiel, died October 3, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer with her family at her side. She was born June 4, 1923 in St. Anna, WI, daughter of the late Casper & Isabelle (Dreifuerst) Roehrig. Alice attended St. Ann Catholic Grade School in St. Anna. On November 17, 1944 she married the love of her life, Robert N. Pethan, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Pleasantville, NJ where Bob was stationed with the U.S. Navy. Mom related the story to us many times how she carried her wedding cake, in a hat box, on her lap, on the train, all the way to New Jersey. The couple celebrated many anniversaries throughout their married lives. Her husband Bob preceded her in death on October 22, 1989. She was very active in the church as a volunteer, slicing up many potatoes for potato salad, making many nescos of eggs for the breakfast at church & standing in the take-out line filling barbecue plates for families to take home and enjoy. In her spare time she was an avid reader, loved to work in her garden and flower beds and maintain her large yard. "These passions brought her immense joy and that joy she passed on to her children and grandchildren". Alice was a faith-filled woman, who loved her family, served her church & community & believed that education & hard work empowered one to do many things. She was extremely proud that all her grandchildren completed their college education. "When we see her many homemade quilts, a beautiful perennial or vegetable garden, an ironed pillowcase, an older women with beautiful blue eyes, or encounter a loving wife or mother, we will think of her. ANDREW PITZ The death of a 19-year-old Kiel youth early Sunday raised Sheboygan County's traffic death toll for the year to three, the same as last year at this time. Killed shortly after 3 a.m. in a one-car crash in the Village of Ada was Andrew J. Pitz of 1025 4th St., Kiel, the son of Mrs. Marie Pitz. Sheriff's men said Pitz, alone in the car, was westbound on Highway 32 when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel, went off the road on the right side, striking a sign and then crashing into a tree. His 1964 Dodge was a complete wreck. The sheriff's department received the call of the accident at Ada at 3:19 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene at 3:30 they found the car against a tree with Pitz lying in the front seat with his feet by the steering wheel and his head near the right front door. With the right door of the car jammed and the left door locked, Officer John Koehler had to use a crowbar to break the left rear window before the youth could be removed from the wreckage. Officer Charles Bilgo, who climbed into the back seat, said Pitz was breathing at the time but bleeding extensively from a severe head wound. While attempting to apply first aid, the damaged vehicle began smoking heavily and Officers Koehler, Bilgo, Russell Scholten and Al Gross removed Pitz from the vehicle. A member of the Ada Fire Department extinguished flames under the hood. Pitz was then placed in the Sertich ambulance and taken to St. Nicholas Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He had suffered massive head and chest injuries. Officer Koehler received first aid at the scene for a cut he received to the left hand while attempting to gain entrance to the wrecked car. Later two stitches were required to close the wound at St. Nicholas Hospital. The third fatality of the 22 in the county last year, occurred on April 5. (high school graduation picture, p. 1, and accident scene, p. 21) Sheboygan Press, Mon. STEVEN E. REINECK MAN WORKING ATOP SILO ELECTROCUTED This morning’s autopsy in the death of a 27-year old Kiel man who fell about 25 feet into a silo on a Sheboygan county farm where he had been sent on a service call, determined that death was caused by electrocution. The victim, Steven E. Reineck, of 801 St. Paul St., employed with Lakeside Harvestore, Inc., of Kiel, died from an electrical shock cause when he came in contact with a hot wire on a fan blower within the silo, according to Dr. Andrew Cyrus, pathologist and coroner, who performed the autopsy. The fan was apparently used to blow away fumes that build up within a silo, allowing repairmen to work in the area. A Lakeside Harvestore spokesman said two employes had been sent on a service call to the Willard Henschel farm on Ford Road, where the accident occurred shortly before noon. According to a Sheboygan County sheriff’s report, Reineck and his co-worker, Brian Manz of Kiel, had climbed atop a silo and removed a three-foot circular top. That sheriff’s initial report indicated that the victim may have been overcome from a build-up of carbon dioxide gas inside the sealed silo, used to store corn, but Cyrus, said the autopsy firmly refuted that speculation. The pathologist said the autopsy revealed multiple burns to various portions of the victim’s body, as he had evidently been struck repeatedly with the flying end of a hot wire. Reineck toppled about 25 feet into the silo from which he was removed by other lakeside Harvestore employes who cut a hole in the side of the structure. “The hot wire touched this man by means other than can be determined,” said Cyrus, but he noted that the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department is assigning an electrician to investigate the cause of the accident. Mr. Reineck was born June 7, 1955, in Sheboygan, son of Eugene and Bernice Becker Reineck. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1973. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel. Mr. Reineck is survived by his parents of Kiel; two sisters, Mrs. Kay Hibbard of new Holstein and Mrs. Jean Kolb of Cleveland; two brothers, Michael of Rochester, Mich., and Paul of Kiel; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Becker of Rural Elkhart lake; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Edward Reineck of Kiel.
