(4-1936 handwritten on the obit.-no newspaper named) ******** MARRIED 50 YEARS Mr. and Mrs. Michael Willihnganz Celebrate Golden Wedding ARE PIONEERS OF KIEL Services at Catholic Church and Festivities at Geigel Hall Events of greater or less import occur during the career of every person, couple or family to leave an impression not soon to be forgotten. Some may cause such sorrow that it cannot be put away, or on the other hand one, the slightest thought of which brings happiness and pleasure. In this reference however, we are pleased to state that it was the latter kind which came to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Willihnganz on Wednesday of this week, marking the fiftieth or golden anniversary of their wedding day. A fitting celebration of this rare and happy event was arranged by the children of the venerable couple. At 9 o'clock a high mass was celebrated by Rev. Rumpel at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic church at which the children and grandchildren sang. Several violin solos were rendered by their grandson, Walter Willihnganz of Beaver Dam. A delicious dinner and supper were served to the guests at Geigel's hall. The afternoon and evening were spent by instrumental and vocal music and dancing. The couple were recipients of many beautiful presents as tokens of affection and esteem and congratulations on the happy event were tendered them by their many friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Willihnganz are pioneers of Kiel and have seen a little settlement of about half a dozen houses develop into our present beautiful city. Mr. Willihnganz came to Kiel March 9, 1868 and bought property from Col. Fred Belitz, the founder of Kiel. In 1869 he built his home where he has continued to carry on his business to the present day. Mr. Willihnganz was born in Mellrichstadt, Bavaria, January 15, 1840 and thus has reached the age of eighty years. After learning the tailor's trade and working in different cities in Germany, he came to America at the age of 26 years. After being employed at various places for several years he came to Kiel and has made it his home ever since. In 1870 he married Mary Wilbert, then of Fond du Lac and came with her parents to America when 5 years old, locating at Fond du Lac where she lived until she was married coming with her husband to Kiel. The little village did not appeal to them then as it had too many Indians, but they stated and found it an ideal place to rear their family of six children who are still living. The four sons have followed their father's trade as tailor. They are: Joseph and Adrian of Beaver Dam, Peter and William in Kiel, with their father; Victoria, now Mrs. J.N. Stephens of Colusa, California, Emma, graduate nurse of Milwaukee. They also have twenty-one grandchildren. The Record joins the many relatives and friends of the couple in wishing them many more years of health and happiness in the sunset of their lives. The following were the out of town guests: Joseph Willihnganz & family of Beaver Dam; Mrs. J.N. Stephens and daughter of Colusa, California, Miss Emma Willihnganz of Milwaukee, Paul Willihnganz and family of Chicago, Mrs. Emma Weber,, Mrs. Frank Weber and Mrs. Peter Wichert of Fond du Lac. MICHAEL WILLIHNGANZ M. WILLIHNGANZ DIES FOLLOWING LENGTHY ILLNESS Was Pioneer of Kiel, Launching Business Here 62 Year Ago With the passing of Michael Willihnganz, who died at his home here Saturday morning, at the age of 90 years, Kiel has lost another of its old pioneers. He had watched the growth of Kiel from a little settlement of a few scattered houses in 1868 to the present little city, having during all that time contributed his share toward the social, civic and religious growth of the community. Mr. Willihnganz was born Jan. 15, 1840 in Maelrichstadt, Bavaria, the second of six children. At an early age he was left an orphan, his mother passing away when he was twelve, and his father when the boy was fifteen. At that time he had already been serving as apprentice in his father's tailor-shop, and shortly after, (at the age of 17) having finished his "Meisterstueck,' he rose to the station of journeyman tailor. From that time on he was thrown on his own resources. For the next eight years he worked at his trade, traveling almost continually through all parts of Germany, visiting at countless places of historic and civil interest. It was to these eight years that his thoughts often turned during recent years, and he never tired of recounting his experiences and telling of the sights he had seen. Deciding to see America, he left Germany and landed in New York in 1866. After only a short stay there, he turned westward. It was probably his spirit of progress that made him work his way as far west as Wisconsin, where the thinly settled area gave promise of opportunity. Among the places he worked while coming west were Buffalo, Constance, Mich., Chicago, and Fond du Lac. It was in 1868 that he settled in Kiel, and opened a tailor shop. After a year here, be bought a lot from Henry F Belitz, founder of Kiel, and erected a building. This same building, long since added to, still stands on the original site, and is now occupied by his son Peter. Having been used continually, since its erection, as a tailor shop, it is one of the oldest business buildings in Kiel. As a young man and in his later years, he was keenly interested in the development of his community. He helped organize and was an active member of the first volunteer fire department; he was a charter member of the first singing society; and he was one of the first members of the SS. Peter and Paul church, having contributed his share toward the building of the three successive church buildings. In his chosen profession, learned in his father's little shop in Germany, he took pride and pleasure. Until April of last year, when he submitted to an operation, he had continued to work at his trade. As he continued the trade of his father, so his four surviving sons are following the trade of their father. He was united in marriage Nov. 20, 1870, to Miss Marion Wilbert of Fond du Lac, who survives him. To the union eight children were born, two of which died in infancy. Surviving are four sons, Joseph of Sheboygan, Peter of this city, Adrian of Beaver Dam and William of Wauwatosa; and two daughters, Mrs. J. N. Stephens (Victoria) of Calousa, Calif. and Miss Emma of Milwaukee. Miss Emma was Kiel's first graduate registered nurse, the profession she still follows. The grandchildren number 23. This Thursday would have marked the couple's sixtieth or diamond wedding anniversary. Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning, with services at the home of his son Peter on Sixth street and at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church, where the Rev. Fr. A. Roder officiated. Burial was in the SS. Peter and Paul cemetery. Pallbearers were Valentine Mueller, Peter Mueller, Alfred Silbernagel, William Lulloff, Joseph Klein, and Carl H. Schroeder. Fond du Lac Commonwealth Reporter, Wed. Sept. 30, 1959, p. 28, c. 1 *********** Roman Ziegelbauer Takes Own Life Tuesday Afternoon Roman Ziegelbauer, 44, former Kiel resident, shot himself about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in a shed on a farm near his Campbellsport farm. He had been threatening self-destruction for some time. He accomplished the act while Fond du Lac county deputies were searching for him, alerted by his wife that he had a gun and was about to commit suicide. Deputies had taken all of Ziegelbauer's guns from him earlier in the month. How he found a gun and committed the act was pieced together from stories told by the deputies and Mrs. Ziegelbauer. He stole the gun, a deer rifle, from the car of a neighbor, who carried it in his car all year round. When the neighbor parked the car, Ziegelbauer was able to get the rifle. He showed it to his wife and told her of his intention. She immediately alerted the sheriff and a search was started. Deputies pulled into the yard of the neighbor and found Ziegelbauer talking to the lady of the house. She was paralyzed with fright as Ziegelbauer had told her what he planned, and threatened to shoot her if she said anything to the police. The deputies asked for Ziegelbauer. They did not know him and did not have the license number of his car. Ziegelbauer replied, "Oh yes, he lives down the road." So the police drove away. On the highway they met Mrs. Ziegelbauer, who was on her way to get the children from school. She stopped the police car and asked what success they had. No sight of the wanted man reported the deputies. Then Mrs. Ziegelbauer told them that he must be in that car in the yard of the farm she just passed. The deputies rushed back to the farm, but it was too late. Ziegelbauer had gotten out of the car, taken the gun from the back, walked about five feet to a shed, turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger. The lady was still beseeching him not to do it. Ziegelbauer came to Kiel with the Kasper Construction crew that built the Lake to Lake plant. He was foreman of the crew. He stayed with Kasper for several years and then branched out for himself in the construction business. His crew did a lot of work in and around Kiel, largely cement and gutter construction. He is a former Kiel alderman and was elected to the Calumet County Board, representing the Third Ward. He started farming along with the cement work, at one time living on the former Louis Lawrence place just north of the city limits. He and his family moved to Campbellsport over a year ago, where he was operating a large farm. He is survived by his wife and seven children. Funeral arrangements had not been completed as the Record went to press. The arrangements are in charge of the Twohig Funeral Home at Campbellsport. Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wis., Thurs. Oct. 1, 1959, p. 1, c. 7
