CARL HAPPEL Karl Happel, a farmer residing near Kiel was found dead yesterday morning, having cut his throat with a razor. At one time he was an inmate of the Northern Hospital but was later released as cured. He was 52 years of age and is survived by a wife and two sons. The Sheboygan Press, June 3, 1913 ******* On Saturday afternoon about 4 o’clock, Mr. Carl Happel, a well-known farmer from town Schleswig attemped suicide at his home on the Plankroad east of Kiel. He took his shaving knife and cut his throat in front of his wife. After doing the deed he left the house and crawled under the front building. Dr. Nauth was called and he bound the wound but he had lost so much blood that he died at 11 o’clock that night. Mr. Happel had been at the insane asylum at Oshkosh for a number of years, and had been healed. Lately he has again had signs of mental derangement and that he newly lost his trade and his circumstances became worse, and may have been the beginning of his insanity. The deceased was born on April 15, 1862 in Hacksheim, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany. At age three he came to America with his parents and siblings, who settled in Town Rhine. In 1888 he married Nellie Grandt and the couple moved to the farm on Plankroad in Town Schleswig, of his father-in-law which became theirs and they have lived there ever since, where they worked hard and saved to bring them to good circumstances. Besides his wife, he is survived by two grown sons. The burial took place on Tuesday afternoon with numerous mourners at the cemetery in Rockville. Mrs. Broeckert provided the service. No newspaper cited, 1913 ******** KIEL MAN CUTS THROAT WITH RAZOR Charles Happel, Well to Do Farmer, Suicides on His Farm HAD BEEN INMATE OF INSANE ASYLUM His throat cut from ear to ear, Charles Happel, a prominent well to do farmer, residing near Kiel, this county, was found dead in a room at his home by members of the family who worried by his continued absence from the family circle, made search for him. A razor, which the dead man grasped in his hand, told the story of suicide. Mr. Happel was a man of nervous temperment and was at one time an inmate of an asylum, following a nervous breakdown. He remained at the institution for a short time, however, and was discharged as cured and had exhibited no signs of recurrence of his trouble. He was about the house as usual and was apparently in excellent spirits only a short time before the tragedy. He retired to his room and when he failed to return, members of the family became alarmed and the discovery of the body was made. Happel had slashed his throat with the razor and had inflected fatal injuries, death having resulted in a short time say physicians who examined the body. No sound was heard by the family. Mrs. Happel was prostrated by the tragedy. Mr. Happel was 52 years of age and for many years was engaged in business as a cattle buyer at Kiel. He resided with his family on a farm near the village and was credited with being well to do. A widow and two daughters survive to mourn his death. No inquest was held, the evidence of suicide being too clear to necessitate an inquiry. The funeral was held at Kiel. Manitowoc Daily Herald, June 4, 1913 page 8

ELMER KAMPER HORRIBLE ACCIDENT – In A Factory At Hilbert The Times received a special from its regular correspondent at Hilbert, on Thursday evening, telling of a sad accident that occurred in that village on Thursday afternoon, whereby Elmer Kemper (sic) a lad of fifteen years, was instantly killed and his body horribly mangled. The youth was at work in the saw mill of Theo. Orphal when an explosion took place and the jointer, near where Kemper was at work burst, killing him instantly. His head was torn from the body and a portion of his brain found across the street at a neighbor’s house. His body was scattered about the mill. The accident is the worst that ever took place in the history of the village and every one is sad and down hearted in consequence. What caused the explosion perhaps will never be known. An inquest was held after which the remains were gathered together and taken to H. Eberhardt’s undertaking establishment. Elmer was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kemper. He was an industrious boy beloved by all and the heartfelt sympathy of the community goes out to the parents, so suddenly and terribly bereft. Fred Ecke another employee was painfully, gut not fatally injured, one ear being partially torn off by the force with which he was thrown against a pile of bolts. He was also struck in the right hip by a piece of iron inflicting a severe flesh wound. Chilton Times – May 18, 1901 ********* Hilbert – The funeral of Elmer Kemper, the victim of the fatal accident which occurred at Theo. Orphal’s mill last Thursday, took place Friday afternoon at the residence of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kemper. Services were conducted by Rev. W. A. Arpke, of Chilton. The remains were taken to Rockville for interment. Besides the pallbearers, who were John Risse, Peter Kripp, Adolph Olander, Peter Dix and Will Welker of this place and Wm. Seibel, of Brant, those who accompanied the remains to the place of burial were; Barney Jouno and Will Johnson of Collins; Sam Jouno of Hayton; Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Orphal and Mrs. Seibel of Hilbert. Elmer Kemper, only son of Andrew and Jennie Kemper, was born at Bancroft, Iowa, January 1, 1886. He came with his parents to Hilbert in 1893, where, with them, he has since resided. A bright, young life and one which gave promise of future usefulness has gone out and left grief-sticken hearts to mourn the loss of a well-beloved son and brother. Chilton Times – May 25, 1901

DON LEE KARSTEADT Accident Kills Youth; National Toll is 363 Don Karsteadt Dies As Auto Tips on Curve Young Kiel Driver of Death Vehicle to Face Charges MANITOWOC—Don Lee Karstaedt (sic), 18, of Rt. 2, Kiel, was Manitowoc County’s first auto accident fatality of 1958. The new year was only about three hours old when he was fatally injured at 3:15 p.m. Sunday in a crack-up on Highway 149 a half mile west of Louis Corners. Karstaedt was a passenger in a car driven by Delmar A. Kenneke, also 18, of 1020 Fourth St., Kiel. Kenneke said he was driving west at 60 to 65 miles an hour despite the night time speed limit of 55 miles per hour. The driver said he was talking to Karstaedt when the passenger suddenly yelled, “There’s a curve!.” Kenneke said he swung the car left and applied the brakes. The auto went out of control and skidded sideways, then tipped over pinning Karstaedt underneath. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said Karstaedt died instantly of cerebral hemorrhage due of a fractured skull. The car crushed his head and the upper trunk of his body, Coroner Teitgen said. Says He Admits Speeding The coroner said he would call an inquest unless Kenneke is charged immediately. Capt. Henry Pleuss of the county traffic police said Tuesday that charges definitely will be brought against Kenneke. He and the district attorney will confer Wednesday to decide what the charge will be. Capt. Pleuss pointed out that the driver admits he was speeding. Kenneke had just driven through Louis Corners, a 35 mile per hour zone, and admitted going 60 or 65 miles per hour a half mile west of the village. “He says he slowed down a little for the speed zone at Louis Corners,” Capt.
