LARRY H. MEYER Meeme Boy, 6, Fatally Hurt When Auto Strikes Bicycle Larry Meyer Fifth Traffic Victim in 1952 A six-year-old town of Meeme boy was fatally injured Thursday evening when his small bicycle was struck by an automobile as his horrified brother looked on. The accident occurred near the boys' home, on Highway 149, one mile west of the intersection of County Trunk MM. The dead boy was Larry Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Meyer, Route 1, Newton. A doctor at the Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, where the boy was taken, said Larry was dead on arrival. The doctor told Dr. Theodore Teitgan, Manitowoc County coroner, the boy had died of a broken neck and probably had suffered a skull fracture. ...short paragraph about number of traffic fatalities.. Driver of the auto, Sylvester M. Endres, 63, of 1528 Martin St., Sheboygan, told county Traffic Officer Jack Jackson the boy's bicycle swerved into the path of the car as both traveled west on the highway. His auto, which was traveling "about 47 miles an hour," had just come over the crest of a hill, Endres added. From information received from the dead boy's brother, (private), Officer Jackson theorized that Larry had been thrown about 10 feet into a roadside ditch by the glancing blow. Larry, apparently still alive, was taken to the Meyer home by Endres and rushed to the hospital by (private) whose auto was approaching from the opposite direction. Questioned by Dr. Teitgen, Endres said the distance from the top of the hill to the point of the accident was too short to allow him to avoid striking the boy when his cycle "zig-zagged." Endres and his wife were coming from Sheboygan to visit relatives in the county. Officer Jackson pointed out that the mishap occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. when visibility was limited somewhat by dusk. Wallace, confused and frightened, informed the county traffic man that his brother had just cycled out of the driveway of the Meyer farm home. He added that the Meyer's pet dog was running alongside the vehicle and may have caused Larry to veer to the left to avoid striking it. The dog also has a habit of tugging at the pants legs of bicycle riders, the officer quoted the boy as saying. As far as is known now no charges will be filed against the Sheboygan driver, the coroner and the officer indicated. Funeral Saturday Funeral services for Larry will be held at the St. James Evangelical and Reformed Church, Spring Valley, at 2 p.m. Saturday, with Rev. Carl Schmahl officiating. Interment will be in the Rockville cemetery. Larry was born in Sheboygan Dec. 1, 1945. He was a first grade pupil at the Mineral Springs School. In addition to his parents and brother, he is survived by: another brother, (private) and two sisters (private); his paternal grand- parents Mr. and Mrs. Theodore F.
