HAROLD ARVIN MATTHIES Harold A. Matthies, age 88, of Kiel, died Tuesday evening, September 16, 1997, at Calumet Medical Center, Chilton, where he was a patient the past three days. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 19, 1997, at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. Rev. Ted Olson will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. He was born August 4, 1909, in Dundee, Wis., son of the late William and Ida Koepke Matthies. On September 2, 1932, he married Ingerburg "Inge" Pieper at Cascade Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death on March 16, 1997. Harold farmed in the town of Schleswig until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Zion Ev. Lutheran Chruch, Louis Corners and a past member of the Men's Club of the church. He was also a member of the Louis Corner's Card Club. Survivors include two sons, David (Lillian), Darwin (Mary Ellen), both of Kiel; very special friends, Clemens and Lorraine Konen, Cedar Lake; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Ervin Matthies, Fond du Lac. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray, Arno and Orville, and two sisters, Leona Hammen and Irma Bustoff. Matthies(sic), 84, formerly of 1037 Sixth St., Kiel, died Sunday evening, March 16, 1997 at Willowdale Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein, where she resided since 1991. She is the former Ingerburg Pieper born May 21, 1912 in Town of Eden, daughter of the late Herbert and Hilda Krueger Pieper. She attended school in Juneau, Wis. On Sept 2, 1932 she married Harold Matthies at Cascade Lutheran Church. She was employed at Lake to Lake, Kiel, retiring in 1978. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners and the Ladies Aid Society of the church. She also was a member of the Louis Corners Homemakers and the Louis Corners Card Club. CLARENCE STEPHAN MEYER Clarence Meyer, 46, of Pigeon Lake, Manitowoc county, passed away early today at Holy Family hospital in Manitowoc. He was born in Milwaukee, Oct. 31, 1901, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Meyer, and spent his childhood at St. Nazianz. He was married to Miss Ovila Rautmann, of the town of Meeme, Dec. 23, 1926, and the couple made their home for a time at New Holstein. They operated a farm at Pigeon Lake for the past seven years. Survivors are his wife; three daughters, three sons, the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Meyer, of St. Nazianz; four brothers, August, of Clark Mills, Raymond, of Valders, and Anton and Irvin, of St. Nazianz; and one sister, Mrs. Theodore Lettenberger, of Manitowoc. OVILA MEYER NELSON 2ND HUSBAND NELSON Mrs. John Nelson, 63, of R. 1, Manitowoc, died Friday of an apparent stroke at Rhinelander where she was vacationing. The former Ovila Rautmann, she was born Aug. 14, 1906, in the Town of Meeme, a daughter of the late Julius and Louise Wilke Rautmann. She married Clarence Meyer, Dec. 23, 1926. He died in 1948. She was born Anna Kenneke, Jan. 10, 1897, at Lennon, Wis., daughter of the late Louis and Otilia Schreiber Kenneke. When she was four years old the family moved to the Town of Meeme. She was educated in township schools and July 30, 1919, was married to Edgar C. Mueller. The couple settled on the homestead farm in the Town of Schleswig. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. Mueller, 91, a retired Town of Meeme farmer, who resided with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Mueller, of Rt. 1, Kiel, died Saturday at Willowdale Nursing Home, New Holstein, where he had been a patient two weeks. Mr. Mueller was born June 9, 1881, in the Town of Schleswig, son of the late Henry and Christina Tagge Mueller. He attended district school at Louis Corners. He married Ida Lawrenz May 7, 1911. The couple resided at New Holstein, later moving to a farm in the Town of Meeme, now operated by their son. His wife preceded him in death in February of 1965. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. CHRISTINA MUELLER Town Of Meeme Woman Dies; Plan Rites Monday Afternoon Kiel—The funeral of Mrs. Christine W. M. Mueller, 77, of town Meeme, who died at 4 a.m. Thursday at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Emil Mueller, following an illness of a year’s duration, will be held at 1:30 o’clock Monday afternoon at the home in town Meeme and at 2 o’clock at Zion Ev. Lutheran church at Louis Corners. Rev. Harold O. Grunwald will officiate and interment will be in the family lot in the church cemetery. The body is now at the Meiselwitz undertaking parlors in Kiel and will be removed to the home in town of Meeme on Saturday. Mrs. Mueller, who was formerly Miss Christine W. M. Tagge, the daughter of William and Christine Tagge, was born in Trebenen, Germany on February 5, 1854. At the age of two years she immigrated to America, settling in the town of Herman and later on a farm in the town of Schleswig. On September 9, 1875 she was married to Henry Mueller of town Schleswig. The couple located on a farm in the town of Meeme. Mrs. Mueller’s husband died on November 8, 1906. Eight children, two of whom preceded their mother in death, were born to this union. Six children, Mrs. Emma Zorn, Peshtigo; Mrs. Hilda Ott, Mrs. Lydia Sixel, Mrs. Alma Schneider, Carl and Henry Mueller, of the town of Meeme, survive. Mrs. Mueller is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Wilhelmine Wilke of Seattle, Mrs. Peter ??, and Mrs. John Kretsch of town Meeme and Mrs. Mathilda Sa??? Of Plymouth and four brothers, Herman and William Tagge of Sheboygan; Robert Tagge of Plymouth and Carl Tagge of Seymour. Twenty-two grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. EDGAR C. MUELLER Edgar C. Mueller, 67, of R.2, Kiel, a retired Town of Schleswig farmer, died unexpectedly at his home Sunday morning. He was born on Sept. 4, 1896, in Town of Schleswig on the Mueller home farm, a son of the late Gottfried and Ann Mueller. He attended district school and on July 30, 1919, was married to Miss Anna Kenneke of Town of Meeme. The couple made their home on the Mueller homestead farm. Following his wife's death in 1962, he remained on the farm with his son and daughter- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kurt Mueller. He was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church at Louis Corners. In addition to his son, Kurt, he is survived by three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. She was married to Emil Mueller Dec. 20, 1914, at Zion Lutheran Church. They resided on the Mueller home farm, Town of Meeme. He preceded her in death June 15, 1925. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a former member of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. EMIL MUELLER Death claimed Emil Mueller, 61, at his home near here last Thursday. He was sick for two years, but able to be about until a few hours before his death. Mr. Mueller was born March 26, 1886 on the farm where he spent his entire life until death called him. He is survived by his grief-stricken widow, three daughters, one son, his mother, two brothers and four sisters. He was treasurer of the Louis Corners church congregation for the past three years. He was a kind and loving husband and father, and his passing will be deeply mourned by his family, relatives and friends. He was born June 5, 1898, in the town of Meeme, son of the late Henry and Christine Tagge Mueller. He attended School in Louis Corners. On March 7, 1925 he married Ethel Lawrenz at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. He farmed in the town of Meeme all of his life. His wife died on September 24, 1979. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. ISLA BELLE MUELLER Isla B. Mueller, 78, of 17230 County Highway XX, Kiel, died Monday morning, Jan. 2, 2005 at Sunny Ridge Nursing Home, Sheboygan. She is the former Isla Pierce, born Oct. 3, 1926 in Marathon County, daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Farnham Pierce. Isla was a 1945 graduate of Central High School in Sheboygan. On Aug. 16, 1947 she married Wilbert Mueller at St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Amherst, Wis. The couple farmed in the town of Meeme all their married life until their retirement. Isla was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. She enjoyed reading novels and working word search puzzles. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Wilbert, one sister-in-law, Henrietta Pierce of Milton and numerous nieces and nephews and friends. KURT LOUIS MUELLER Kurt L. Mueller, 73, of 18223 W. Washington Road, Kiel, died Sunday morning, Aug. 30, 1998 at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Nov. 19, 1924 in the town of Schleswig, son of the late Edgar and Anna Kenneke Mueller. He attended Maple Grove School in the town of Schleswig. On Oct. 15, 1949, he married Delores Roethel at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. Kurt farmed on the family homestead in the town of Schleswig all his life until his retirement. WILBERT ELMER WILLIAM MUELLER Wilbert E. "Wimpy" Mueller, age 85, formerly of rural Kiel, died on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 6, 2008, at Sunny Ridge Nursing Home, Sheboygan, where he resided the past 3 1/2 years. He was born on Feb. 16, 1923, in the town of Meeme, son of the late Emil and Ella (Lawrenz) Mueller. Wilbert attended grade school in Louis Corners. On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Isla Pierce at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amherst. Isla preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 2005. Wilbert farmed most of his life in the town of Meeme. After retiring from farming he went to work for Seifert Manufacturing in Kiel until retirement. He was a lifetime member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners, where he held various positions in the church. Wilbert enjoyed fishing, gardening and hunting. Survivors include his sister-in-law: Henrietta Pierce, Milton. Numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife and four sisters. The funeral service for Wilbert will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners, with the Rev. David Endorf officiating. OVILA MEYER NELSON 2ND HUSBAND NELSON Mrs. John Nelson, 63, of R. 1, Manitowoc, died Friday of an apparent stroke at Rhinelander where she was vacationing. The former Ovila Rautmann, she was born Aug. 14, 1906, in the Town of Meeme, a daughter of the late Julius and Louise Wilke Rautmann. She married Clarence Meyer, Dec. 23, 1926. He died in 1948. On Jan. 4, 1956, she married John Nelson. He died May 4, 1956. Surviving are three sons, three daughters, 17 grandchildren; three brothers, Oscar of Sheboygan, Edwin and Armie or rural Kiel and two sisters, Mrs. George Fessler of School Hill and Mrs. William Voss of rural Kiel. JOHN C. NIELSEN John C. Nielsen, 77, of Kiel, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday evening, November 27, 2022. John was born August 29, 1945, in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Howard and Margaret (Piersing) Nielsen. He graduated from Palatine High School in Illinois in 1963. John proudly served his country in the United States Army from November 1, 1965 until October 27, 1967. During this time, he served 10 months in Vietnam with the 1st Calvary Air Mobile Division, 2/19 Field Artillery and earned the rank of Sergeant. On January 22, 1966, he married the former Marilyn Deering in Illinois. He was employed by Herbner TV, working in TV service and later worked for Motorola for 23 years as a mechanical engineer until his retirement. John was a lifetime member of VFW Post 6707 in Kiel, where he served as past commander. He was a member of Outdoors Inc., where he enjoyed scoring for the trap league. John enjoyed amateur radio from the time he was a teenager until recently. He also liked to spend time woodworking. In addition to his wife, Marilyn, he is survived by his children, John Jr. (Kim) Nielsen and Julie (Bob) Mattingly; his grandchildren, Matthew Nielsen, Brian Nielsen, Zachary Coster (Fiance Mya), Emily Ernsperger, Thomas (Savanah) Coster, Katherine Coster, Grace Coster, Liesl Coster and Maxwell Mattingly; his great-grandchildren, Annily, Elijah, Alexander and one expected soon; his son-in-law, Dan Coster and his sister-in-law, Sandra Deering. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Abby Coster, his brother and his sister. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 5, 2022 at 11:30 a.m., at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church (19214 County Hwy XX, Kiel) with Rev. Ted Olsen officiating. Visitation will be held at the church, on Monday, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Military honors will be conducted following the service by Kiel VFW Post 6707. FRIEDRICH S. NINMER (d. 1914) Notes from Schleswig: Another pioneer resident passed away at the home of his son-in-law, August Steinbeck, on Sunday last, Mr. Frederick Ninmer at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 11 days. His death was caused by a stroke of paralysis, which he suffered a few days before his death. Mr. Ninmer was born January 8, 1823 in Schonwald, Manefield, Germany. In 1849 he was united in marriage to Henriette Peckruhn. They immigrated to this country in 1856 coming directly to the Town of Schleswig where he bought 80 acres of "bush land" which he turned into a nice farm. He lived in Schleswig continuously. He leaves seven children, three sons and four daughters besides twenty-four grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren to mourn his death. His wife died in 1910. Mr Ninmer was a good, honest man and well liked by all who knew him. He was buried Tuesday afternoon of last week in the Louis Corners Cemetery. Pastor Witte officiated. CHARLES AUGUST FRED OTT Charles A. Ott, 80, of Rt. 1, Valders retired Town of Meeme farmer died Monday morning at Maple Crest Sanitarium. He had been in ill health five months. On April 1, 1907 he married Louise Ortlepp of the town of Rantoul. They resided at Manitowoc for several years before farming in the Town of Meeme. After his wife preceded him death in August, 1937. Mr. Ott continued to make his home on the farm with his son and daughter-in-law. He was a life member of Zion Church where he formerly served as an elder. LESTER AUGUST OTT Lester A. Ott, 64, of R. 1, Valders, died unexpectedly Friday evening at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, after being stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage while at the bago (sic) at Brothertown. He was born Oct. 1, 1908, in Manitowoc, a son of the late Carl and Bertha Ortlieb Ott. The family moved to a Town of Meeme farm while he was a child. He attended district school. He and his wife, the former Esther Krueger of Collins, resided on the family farm. She died May 13, 1946. On Nov. 22, 1947, he married Norma Schmahl. Mr. Ott retired from farming in 1959, and was employed at the Allen V. Smith Corp., Valders. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church at Louis Corners and belonged to its cemetery committee. He was a former church elder and was a former member of the Woodland Board of Education. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, (private); 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother in infancy and two grandchildren. ALFRED CHRISTIAN OTTO Alfred C. Otto, 80, formerly of Kiel, died this morning at Willowdale Nursing Home in New Holstein, where he had resided for the past three years. He was born Sept. 8, 1904, in Brown County, son of Edward and Anna Otto. He married the former Wilma Kuchenbecker on Nov. 27, 1923 at Lark Methodist Church in Wayside, Brown County. The couple operated a cheese factory at Pine Grove in Brown County until 1942, when they moved to a farm near St. Nazianz. Mrs. Otto died in 1953. Mr. Otto farmed until 1960, after which he was employed at Kiel Wooden Ware Co. until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of Zion Lutheran church at Louis Corners. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Leo (Betty) Koenig, Jr., of Mishicot, Mrs. Allen (Audrey) Schneider of School Hill, and Mrs. Merle (Marilyn) Voelker of Kiel; three sons, Roy and Otto both of Manitowoc, and Earl of rural Kiel; 19 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Esther Shusta of Sheboygan; and five brothers, Anthony of Lark, Walter of Wrightstown, Arthur of Oneida, and Raymond and Edward, both of Wayside. WILMA OTTO Mrs. Alfred Otto, 43, St. Nazianz, died Tuesday, at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, after a lingering illness. She was born Feb. 27, 1910, at Aberdeen, South Dak. Mrs. Otto, nee Miss Wilma Kuechenbecker, was married to Alfred Otto on November 28, 1928. They moved on the present farm about 2 miles south of St. Nazianz, eight years ago. ARNOLD WILLIAM PAUTZ Arnold W. Pautz, 75, of 1102 Second St., Kiel, died Sunday morning at Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc, where he’d been a patient for two weeks. Mr. Pautz was born Feb. 22, 1910, in the town of Gibson, Manitowoc County, son of Henry and Mathilda Hanke Pautz. He attended school in the town of Cooperstown. Mr. Pautz married the former Margaret Zimmermann on May 8, 1937, at Trinity Lutheran church in Kiel. The couple resided in Two Rivers, Sheboygan, and Louis Corners before moving to Kiel in 1972. Mr. Pautz was employed at American Chair co. for 32 years until his retirement in 1970. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran church in Kiel. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Arnold Jr. of Omro, and Donald of Bonduel; one daughter, Mrs. Karen Wallander of Hazelhurst; 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; five brothers, Ottmar and Ervin, both of Two Rivers, Herbert of Manitowoc, Leonard of Maribel, and Henry of Green Bay; and one sister, Mrs. Adela Fager of Luxemburg. MARGARET AUGUSTA PAUTZ Margaret A. Pautz, 84, formerly of Kiel, died Sunday morning, October 13, 2002 at Birch Hill Healthcare Center, Shawano. She is the former Margaret Zimmermann, born Jan. 28, 1918, in the town of Meeme, daughter of the late Carl and Marie Henning Zimmermann. She attended Woodland School. On May 8, 1937, Margaret married Arnold W. Pautz at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel. He preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 1985. Margaret worked at Laun Furniture Factory, Kiel for a number of years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aide and the Louis Corners Homemakers. Her many interests included crafting, quilting, knitting and crocheting. Survivors include her children, Arnold Jr. Pautz, Rhinelander, Karen (Marshal) Wolf, Rhinelander, Donald (Cindy) Pautz, Cecil; 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. ALFRED A. PHILLIPS Alfred A. Phillips, 65, of 426 Huron Ave. died suddenly Thursday evening at the home of his sister, Mrs. Walter Markgraf, R. 2, N orth 38th St. Born March 13, 1890 in the town of Meeme, Manitowoc County he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Phillips. On April 6, 1915 he married Elsie Heckmann who preceded him in death in 1946. The couple lived on the family homestead until 1930 when they moved to Spring Valley, Wis. In 1932 they returned to the Kiel area and in 1943 moved to Sheboygan where Mr. Phillips was employed by the Rway Furniture Co. He is survived by a son Norwood of Sheboygan, two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Arlyle) Markgraf and Mrs. Roger (Bernette) Augustine both of the town of Sheboygan, and 16 grandchildren. ELSIE P. PHILLIPS Mrs. A. Phillips Passes Saturday of Brief Illness Mrs. Elsie Phillips, 55, wife of Alfred Phillips, of 428 Huron avenue, passed away at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at St. Nicholas hospital after a two days’ illness. Born in the town of Meeme on Jan. 22, 1891, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Heckmann, she was married on April 6, 1915. The couple operated cheese factories in Osman and Belgium and a farm in Spring Valley. After residing in Kiel for 13 years, they spent the last three years in Sheboygan. The deceased enjoyed her family and was well known for her love of flowers and embroidery work. RAMONA PHILLIPS Young Daughter of Kiel Couple Summoned Sunday Ramona Marcella, the seven month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Phillips, died on Sunday morning at 10 am at the home of her parents, 316 Fremont Street, Kiel, after a two month lingering illness. The child was born on August 24, 1931 in Spring Valley. When the child was two months old, the family moved to Kiel on Fremont Street. Survivors are the parents, two brothers, Norwood and Beverly and two sisters, Arlyle and Bernetta, all at home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the family residence, 316 Fremont Street, with services at the Trinity Lutheran Church at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Harold O. VALERIA E. PHILLIPS Belgium Baby Smothered in Farmhouse Fire The six-month old child of Mr. And Mrs. Alfred Phillips, residing on the road two miles west of Belgium, was suffocated Friday afternoon sometime between two and three o'clock, when fire broke out in the home. Mr. Phillips is a cheesemaker and Mrs. Phillips was assisting him in the cheese factory at the time, being but temporarily away from the home. When smoke was seen pouring from the house the frantic parents rushed there and rescued two of their children, but the smoke was too much for the infant, and it was dead when they reached it. HILDA LEONE PIEPER Mrs. Hilda Pieper, 84, of Kiel, died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 19, at Willowdale Nursing Home in New Holstein where she had lived the past two years. The former Hilda Krueger was born Nov. 27, 1892, at Hustisford, a daughter of the late Henry and Louise Schwenso Krueger, and attended Hustisford schools. On April 5, 1911, she married Herbert Pieper at Hustisford. The couple lived in Cascade where they operated a cheese factory for eight years and later operated farms in the Plymouth and Kiel area prior to Mr. Pieper’s death in 1963. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Louis Corners and the Ladies Aid Society. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Ingelburg) Matthies of rural Kiel and Mrs. Adrian (Ruth) Melis of Wauwatosa; two sons, Harry of Kiel and Harold of Plymouth; 12 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. JOHN POPPENHAGEN JOHN POPPENHAGEN DIED IN TOWN MEEME FUNERAL THURSDAY John Poppenhagen, 73, who has been a resident of town Meeme, Manitowoc county, for a number of years, died at his home Monday. The deceased was born November 9, 1844, in Muecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany. The couple migrated to America in 1872 and settled on a farm two miles north of School Hill. His wife preceded him in death a number of years ago. He is survived by four children, Mrs. August Lenz and Mrs. John Steffen, School Hill; Mrs. Karl Stanich and John Poppenhagen, Jr., of this city. LESTER AUGUST PRANGE Funeral services were held Wednesday from Trinity Lutheran church for Lester A. Prange, 43, who died at his Louis Corners home early Monday morning. Mr. Prange suffered a stroke Sunday. Mr. Prange was born in the town of Sheboygan Falls September 21, 1906, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Prange. He spent his youth in that township and attended school there. On June 23, 1934, he was married to Miss Lydia Lilge of the town of Schleswig, and the couple lived in that township up until nine years ago when they moved to Louis Corners. He was a machinist at Hart-Carter Co., New Holstein. He served as clerk of Joint School District No 7. Survivors include his wife; three daughters (private), two brothers, Norman of Sheboygan and Milfred of Rockville. A son, his parents, one brother, and one sister preceded him in death. LYDIA R. (LILGE) PRANGE Lydia R. Oelerich, age 92, of Kiel died Saturday afternoon, Sept. 25, 1999 at the Calumet Homestead in New Holstein where she had been a resident for the past 11 years. She was the former Lydia Lilge born on July 31, 1907 daughter if (sic) the late August and Bertha Jeske Lilge. On June 23 1934 she married Lester Prange. He died on May 22, 1950. In 1953 she married Oscar Oelerich at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel. He died in 1961. She enjoyed playing cards. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel; the church's Ladies Aid and was an honorary member of the H.C.E. Survivors include 3 daughters: Doris (Lloyd) Mahlock of rural Kiel; Janet (Edward) Schneeweis of Sun City, Arizona; Donna (Donald) Casper of rural New Holstein; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lucy Jergens of Valders and Beata Radder of Plymouth; 1 step daughter, Elsie Franzen of Plymouth and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren. WILLIAM PRANGE William Prange Killed By Auto Near His Home A 10-year-old Louis Corners boy, William Prange, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Prange, sustained a fractured skull and a broken leg when struck by a car driven by William Schmahl, R. 1, Elkhart Lake, near the home of his parents, a few miles northeast of Kiel late Wednesday afternoon, June 18. He died Thursday morning in a Sheboygan hospital from the injuries. He was taken to the Memorial hospital in the Kiel fire department ambulance. This fatality brought to eight the number of persons who have lost their lives on Manitowoc county streets and highways during 1947. William was born in Kiel in 1937. The family moved to Louis Corners in 1938, the father being employed by the Lauson company at New Holstein. In the public school at Louis Corners he was a fourth grade student. AUGUST QUANTE August Quante, Nearly One-Hundred Years Old, is Called by Death. August Quante, the oldest resident of the town of Schleswig, and probably of Manitowoc county, died of old age at the home of his son Rudolph in Schleswig on Monday evening. He was born in Hessen, Germany, Oct. 16, 1824, and came to this country in 1854, settling in Wisconsin. In 1858 he was united in marriage to Marie Zorn and the young couple moved on the farm now owned by their son Rudolph. Mr. Quante lived on the homestead for the last 66 years. He was always in good health, and never needed the services of a doctor until lately. Ten children were born to them, two of whom have passed away. His wife preceeded him in death five years ago. The children are: Mrs. Carl Ibe of Schleswig; Mrs. Christ. Eichhorn of Kiel Mrs. Haarmann of Sheboygan; Mrs. Fred. Koeppen of Meeme, Mrs. Helena Roehl, on the homestead; Henry of Washington; August of Meeme; Rudolph, at home. There are also 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren surviving. The funeral will be held this (Thursday) afternoon, with burial at Louis Corners. Rev. W. Kuether will officiate.
BERTHA QUANTE Mrs. August Quante died at her home in Schleswig, Tuesday, of old age, after being confined to her bed for three years. The deceased, nee Bertha Zorn, was born in Pommerania, Germany, Sept, 15, 1837, and came to America in 1854. In 1858 she was married to August Quante, the couple making their home on a farm in Schleswig, where they have since resided. She is survived by her husband, who is 94 years of age, seven children, 26 grandchildren and eight great-grand- children. The sons are Rud. on the homestead, and Aug. in the town of Meeme; the daughters; Mrs. Pauline Ibe, Mrs. Mathilda Haarmann and Mrs. Helen Roehl, of Schleswig, Mrs. Bertha Eichhorn of Kiel, and Mrs. Emilie Koeppen of Meeme. She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. J. Loos of Millhome, Mrs. Albert Schulz of Howards Grove, and Mrs. M. Strassmann of Sturgeon Bay. On September 18, 1954, he married Betty Miske at Zion Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. Arno was employed at Bemis Mfg. Company, Sheboygan Falls for a number of years and then worked at Tecumseh Products, New Holstein, for approximately 15 years until his retirement. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. Survivors include his wife, Betty; two sons, Curt Rabe and his fiancee, Christine Pennings, Kiel, Dean (Laura) Rabe, Springdale, Ark.; three grandchildren, Joseph, Christopher and Morgan Rabe. AUGUST RABE August C. Rabe, 67, well-known town of Schleswig farmer, passed away at the Sheboygan Memorial hospital Monday morning. He had been a patient there for the past three weeks. The deceased, the son of the late Frederick and Wilhelmina Kaperich Rabe, was born in town Meeme on March 9, 1876. In his youth he attended the district schools of Meeme township. His marriage to Miss Caroline Schnuell of town Eaton was performed 45 years ago on Aug. 30, 1898. Before Mr. and Mrs. Rabe engaged in farming, Mr. Rabe operated a blacksmith shop at Valders and St. Nazianz for a number of years. The couple has resided in varous places in Schleswig and Meeme townships. For the past 29 years Mr. and Mrs. Rabe and their family have resided on the farm in town Schleswig near Steinthal. Mr. Rabe has been a member of town Schleswig town board and for the past three years has served as supervisor. Besides being a faithrul and devout member of the Zion church. Mr. Rabe has been a member ot the consistory for many years, serving as an elder of the church. CAROLINE RABE Mrs. August (Caroline) Rabe, aged 68, widow of the late August C. Rabe, passed away on her birth date Friday at 1 a. m. at her farm home in the town of Schleswig, near Steinthal. Mrs. Rabe had suffered a stroke earlier in the week, and had been in ailing health for a number of years. Mrs. Rabe, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schnell was born in the town of Schleswig on February 25, 1876. She was married to August Rabe on August 20, 1898, and the couple settled on the present farm home where she passed away. Her husband preceded her in death on September 27, 1943. Survivors are the following ten children: Mrs. Frank Karstaedt of the town of Meeme, Mrs. Michael Lechler of the town of Eaton, Mrs. Eldon Fluhr of Meggers, Mrs. Francis Wagner, residing near Kiel, Alvin of the town of Schleswig, Alfon of the town of Eaton, Ruben of Manitowoc, Frederick of this city, and Elmer and Arno at home. Other survivors are 24 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Mrs. Jacob Reichert of this city, Mrs. John Ruh of the town of Schleswig, Mrs. William Ott of near Valders; and 2 brothers, William Schnuell of New Holstein and Carl Schnuell of Manitowoc. EDNA RABE Edna L. Rabe, 92, of Kiel died Wednesday evening, March 25, 2009 at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, Sheboygan. She was the former Edna Peter born March 27, 1916 in the Town of Rhine, daughter of the late John and Ella (Jochman) Peter. On August 26, 1936 Edna was united in marriage to Norman Rabe at St. Peter United Church of Christ, Town of Rhine. Norman preceded her in death on November 16, 1978. Edna and Norman farmed in the Town of Schleswig until 1978 when they moved to their home in Rockville. Edna also was employed at Lake to Lake, Kiel for 26 years. Edna did volunteer work for Sheboygan Memorial Hospital and enjoyed bowling and playing cards. GLENN LEE RABE Glenn Lee Rabe, age 54, of 21710 Rockville Road, Kiel, died Thursday morning, June 20, 1996, at his home after a brief struggle with cancer. WILHELMINA RABE Mrs. Willhelmina Rabe passed away suddenly at her home in Kiel on Saturday, death being due to heart failure. She had not been feeling well a few days before, but her ailment not being considered serious her sudden death came entirely unexpected. Deceased, nee Kepernick, was born in Gerswalde, Province of Brandenburg, Germany, Feb. 22, 1846, and came to America in 1862, with her parents, who settled in Manitowoc county. She was married in 1871 in Sheboygan county to Fred. Rabe, the couple making their home on a farm in the town of Schleswig. Her husband died in 1908, and in 1911 Mrs. Rabe came to Kiel to reside. The survivors are eleven children, as follows: Mrs. Anna Schelk, Mrs. Ida Christel and Mrs. Alma Ruh, Fred., William, August, Otto, George, John and Herman Rabe. Also 39 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, with services in the Louis Corners church, Rev. W. Kuether officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. JOHN HARRY RADES John H. Rades, 76, of R. 2, Kiel, died Sunday at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital after an illness of about a month. He was born in the Town of Rhine Sept. 30, 1886, a son of the late Frank and Wilhelmina Rades, and moved to the Town of Meeme as a child. He was married to Minnie Lawrenz at Zion Lutheran Church, Louis Corners, June 16, 1928, and the couple farmed in Town of Meeme following their marriage. His wife died in January of 1954. Mr. Rades was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Louis Corners. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Minnie Blum, Milwaukee, and a brother, Herman, of Ada. WILHELMINE "MINNIE" RADES Mrs. John Rades, 64, of Route 2, Kiel, died early Tuesday evening at St. Nicholas Hospital after a lingering illness. Nee Minnie Lawrenz, she was born Aug. 31, 1889 in Town Meeme, a daughter of August and Ernestina Sell Lawrenz, attended district schools, and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church at Louis Corners. She made her home on the Lawrenz homestead farm, eight miles east of Kiel, since her marriage to John Rades on June 16, 1929. The marriage was performed at Zion Church by the late Rev. William Kuether. Survivors are her husband; her mother, Mrs. August Lawrenz; three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Ida) Mueller, Mrs. Ella Mueller and Mrs. Harry (Ethel) Mueller, and a brother, Elmer Lawrenz, all of Town Meeme. He was born October 19, 1910 in the town of Meeme, son of the late Julius and Louise Wilke Rautmann. On July 20, 1935 he married Edna Rabe. She preceded him in death in 1958. On April 23, 1960 he married Lucille Swallow. She preceded him in death on January 15, 1987. Armie attended the Woodland Grade School in the town of Meeme. AUGUST RAUTMANN Notes from Kiel: The body of Private Aug. Rautmann is expected in Kiel this week from New York, where it arrived from England last week. The young man was among the first troops that left this section to cross the sea. He died on shipboard and was buried in England. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Rautmann of School Hill. August Rautmann of School Hill were received here last Tuesday night from New York, where they had arrived from England a short time ago. The casket was removed to Meiselwitz’s undertaking rooms, from where the remains were taken to the Louis Corners cemetery on Thursday afternoon for interment. Six members of Kasper Post, Ameri- can Legion, acted as pallbearers, namely: Commander Fred. Sieling, Vice Commander Louis Nauth, Adjt. E. A. Paulsen, Edgar Burkhardt, Melvin Timm and C. Wallman. Rev. Kuether of the Louis Corners church led the services at the grave, and taps were sounded by Bugler Harvey Kissinger. EDNA RAUTMANN Mrs. Armie Rautmann, 45, Kiel R. 2 (Town of Meeme), died at her home Friday afternoon following a lingering illness. Her maiden name was Edna Rabe. She was born on May 7, 1913, a daughter of the late George and Lydia Roehl Rabe in the town of Schleswig. She received her elementary education at the Hillside Grove School in the township. LOUISA RAUTMANN Mrs. Julius Rautmann, 83, of Route 2, Kiel, died Monday afternoon at St. Nicholas hospital after being in ill health the past four weeks. She had been confined to the hospital since fracturing her hip in a fall at the home of a son, Armie, in the town of Meeme, where she had lived for 16 years. Nee Louisa Wilke, she was born January 8, 1868, in the town of Mosel, the daughter of Christ and Augusta Wilke, and was married to Julius Rautmann on April 21, 1889. Following their marriage the couple settled on a farm in the town of Meeme where they spent their entire married life. Mrs. Rautmann was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran church, Louis Corners, and its Ladies' Aid society. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Luella Fessler, St. Nazianz; Mrs. Olga Voss, Millhome, and Mrs. Ovila Meyer, Pigeon Lake; four sons, Otto, town of Meeme; Oscar, Sheboygan; Edwin, town of Schleswig, and Armie, at home. Thirty-eight grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren also survive. Her husband died in 1936. A son, August; two daughters, Mrs. Harry (Frieda) Karsteadt and Mrs. Hugo (Viola) Winkel; four brothers and two sisters also preceded her in death. ARLEEN REICHARDT Arleen K. Reichardt, age 87, of Kiel died peacefully Saturday morning, Feb. 5, 2011, at Sharon Richardson Community Hospice after a brief illness. The former Arleen Grossheim was born on March 31, 1923, in Greenbush, daughter of the late Walter and Hilda Kraemer Grossheim. She attended Elkhart Lake Schools. On Aug. 30, 1941, she married Norman Reichardt Sr. at St. Peter’s Church in the town of Rhine. He died June 21, 2001. The couple farmed in the town of Schleswig until 1984 when they moved to Kiel. Arleen was also a baker at Siebkens Resort in Elkhart Lake for 40 years and worked in the Kiel High School kitchen for a number of years. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Louis Corners and the Ladies Aid. Arleen enjoyed traveling, gardening, genealogy, paying cards and spending time with her family. Survivors are her children; Georgene (Dennis) Dexheimmer of Elkhart Lake, Norman Jr. (Pamela) Reichardt of Branch, Roger (Mary) Reichardt of School Hill, Bonnie (Barry) Sorensen of Sheboygan, Nancy Petzold of Kiel and William (Teresa) Reichardt of Howards Grove; one son in law, David Schultz of Waldo; 24 grandchildren and many great and great great grandchildren; sister in laws, Priscilla Grossheim and Marcelain Odekirk both of Plymouth. DELORES HILDA REICHARDT Delores H. Reichardt, 79, of 627 Miller Court, Kiel, died Thursday morning, Dec. 7, 2006 at her home. She was the former Delores H. Schumacher, born Nov. 4, 1927 in Howards Grove, daughter of the late Oscar and Lillie Erbstoeszer Schumacher. Delores attended Howards Grove Grade School and was a graduate of Howards Grove High School. She continued her education in Sheboygan completing a short business course in 1945. She worked at State Bank of Howards Grove after graduation. On May 22, 1948, she married Lyle H. Reichardt at Immanuel Untied Church of Christ in the town of Herman. Lyle preceded her in death Dec. 4, 2006. The couple owned and operated Reichardt Service Kiel for 22 ½ years. To keep herself busy after her retirement, she did various cleaning jobs and babysitting. Delores was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel, and a member of the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed playing cards with her grandchildren and letting them win, baking, puzzles and swing night-night blankets for her grandchildren. Survivors include her five children, 10 grandchildren, 3 great- grandchildren, two sisters and one sister-in-law (names omitted for privacy). She was also preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Elmer Kueter, Robert Barrett and Norman Reichardt. GEORGE HENRY JACOB REICHARDT George H. Reichardt, 82, of 621 St. Paul Street, Kiel, died Saturday at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, where he had been a patient four days. He was born May 19, 1893 in the Town of Schleswig, a son of George and Helena Hungsberg Reichardt. He attended the district school. On September 2, 1914 he married Erna Mueller at Zion Lutheran church, Louis Corners. The couple operated the Reichardt home farm in Schleswig. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1964. After Mrs. Reichardt died on April 20, 1974, he moved to Kiel. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a former treasurer of the church. Survivors include two sons, Norman, Route 2, Kiel; and Lyle, Kiel; 12 grand- children and ten great-grandchildren. HELENE REICHARDT Mrs. Helena Reichardt, 91, widow of the late George Reichardt Sr., died Saturday evening at the town of Schleswig, Manitowoc County, farm home of her son, George Jr. The former Helena Hungsberg, she was born in Schleswig, March 2, 1863, a daughter of the late Bernhard and Emily Zorn Hungsberg. On Dec. 17, 1885 she was married to Mr. Reichardt. The couple farmed the Hungsberg homestead in Schleswig, Mrs. Reichardt’s lifetime home. Her husband died in April, 1918. Surviving, in addition to the son George Jr., are three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Norbert, another son and daughter in infancy, four brothers and one sister. LYLE HERMAN ALBERT REICHARDT Lyle H. Reichardt, 81, of 627 Miller Court, Kiel, died Monday evening, Dec. 4, 2006 at Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein. He was born Oct. 24, 1925 in rural Kiel, son of the late George and Erna Mueller Reichardt. Lyle attended Rockville Grade School and was a graduate of Kiel High School. He continued his education at Lakeshore Technical College. On May 22, 1948, he married the former Delores Schumacher at Immanuel United Church of Christ in the town of Herman. He had worked at Riverside Dairy, New Holstein and Nash Sales, Plymouth, prior to owning and operated Reichardt Service Kiel for 22- 1/2 years. He was employed at Siefert Mfg., Kiel, and Ameriquip until retirement. Lyle was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel, where he was a former member of the church council and was an usher. He also was a former member of the Kiel Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren expecially sharing some of his fishing secrets with them. He also enjoyed camping, woodworking, polka music and playing cards. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Delores, 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three sisters-in-law (names omitted for privacy). She preceded him in death on September 1, 1939. On August 30, 1941 he married Arleen Grossheim at St. Peter’s Church, town of Rhine. Norman farmed in the town of Schleswig for 40 years, retiring in 1984 when they couple moved to Kiel. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners, where he was a member of the Men’s Club, Church Council and Bible Class, holding many offices. Norman enjoyed woodworking in his retirement years. ROMA RETLICH Mrs. Roma Retlich, 71, of R. 1, Kiel, widow of Walter, died Wednesday night at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, where she had been a patient since Monday. The former Roma Graf was born Sept. 6, 1904 in Kiel, daughter of Arthur and Katharine Balz Graf. She attended public school in Kiel. On April 2, 1927, she was married to Mr. Retlich in Bethlehem United Church of Christ in the Town of Schleswig. The couple farmed on the Retlich homestead and later purchased a tavern in School Hill. They moved to another farm in Schleswig in 1958. Mr. Retlich died Sept. 22, 1958. Mrs. Retlich was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Louis Corners. VIRGINIA MAE IRMA JOHANNA RETLICH Virginia M. Retlich, 74, formerly of 11 E. Paine St., Kiel, died Friday morning, Aug. 13, 1999 at Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein, where she resided the past two months. She is the former Virginia Karsteadt born July 11, 1925 in Manitowoc County, daughter of the late Harry and Freida Rautamnn Karsteadt. She attended Millhome Grade School and was a 1944 graduate of Kiel High School. On March 5, 1949, she married Allen Retlich at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners, Wis. Virginia was employed at the Altona Supper Club, New Holstein, for 15 years. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Church, Louis Corners; Ladies Aid and the Kiel Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include two sons, DuWayne (Patricia), rural Elkhart Lake; Brian (Barbara), Cleveland; two daughters, Susan Retlich and special friend, Russ Cavins, Kenosha; Kathryn (Mark) Jeske, Plymouth; five grandchildren, Jason and Christopher Retlich and Amanda, Marissa and Scott Jeske. She is further survived by one brother, Wallace Karsteadt, Rockville and two sisters, Glendoris (Dean) Brocker, Plymouth, and Julianne (Myron) Firkus, Rosholt, Wis. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gloria Henning and Marian Winter and one brother, Don Lee Karsteadt. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners, with the Rev. Ted Olson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Church cemetery. WALTER FREDERICK RETLICH Walter F. Retlich, 59, a Town of Schleswig farmer, died Monday evening at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan where he had been a patient for 11 days. Born April 22, 1899, in the township, he was a son of the late Ernst and Minnie Axel Retlich. He attended Hillside Grove School in the township and married the former Roma Graf of Kiel at Bethlehem Reformed Church at Schleswig, April 2, 1927. The couple lived on the Retlich homestead farm until 12 years ago when they purchased a tavern at School Hill. They operated the tavern until July 1 of this year when he returned to Schleswig to farm. (Survivors omitted for privacy) A sister and a brother also preceded him in death. ANNA I. RIECK Mrs. Richard L. Rieck, 72, of Rt. 2, Kiel, died Monday evening at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wagner, with whom she had been living since the death of her husband in 1943. She had been in ill health the past year. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. The Rev. William Hartwig will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. The former Ann Lutzke was born Aug. 13, 1887, in the Town of Liberty, daughter of the late Charles and Anna Luebke Lutzke. She was married to Mr. Rieck July 28, 1904, in the Town of Liberty and they settled on a farm in the Town of Schleswig. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Herbert Wagner of Rt. 2, Kiel; son Henry of Manitowoc; sister, Mrs. Herman Rieck of Manitowoc; three brothers, John of Manitowoc, Emil of St. Nazianz and Louis of Sheboygan; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded by her husband, a daughter, three sisters, a brother and a great grandchild. RICHARD L. RIECK Richard L. Rieck of Town Meeme is Called to Rest Kiel, Wis. – Richard L. Rieck, 62, resident of the town of Meeme, Manitowoc county, passed away at his farm home Friday night after an illness of one year. He was born June 6, 1880, the son of August Rieck and Mary Schmidt, and was married to Miss Anna Lutzke on July 28, 1904, in town Liberty. For the past 36 years they resided at the present farm home. Survivors are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Herbert Wagner, at home; a son, Harry, at Manitowoc; four grandchildren; his aged mother, Mrs. Mary Rieck of Sheboygan; four brothers, Arthur and Herman of Manitowoc, Albert of Town Meeme and Edmund of Lena, Wis.; a sister, Mrs. Edna Hitzler of Sheboygan.
