EDITH SCHWANT School Hill Girl Dies In Head-on Collision Edith Schwantz(sic), 18, Fatally Injured In Sunday Crash Near Kiel One person was killed and ten injured-two seriously-in highway accidents in Manitowoc county over the weekend, bringing the county's highway fatality total to six for 1938. Fatally injured was Edith Schwantz, 18, School Hill, passenger in a car driven by Mrs. Cora Gersmehl, route 2, Elkhart Lake, which figured in a head-on collision with a car driven by T.C. Nelson, Kiel, on Highway 57 about a mile and a half south of Kiel shortly before one o'clock Sunday morning. Dies in Hospital Miss Schwantz died at the Plymouth hospital, where she was taken in the Kiel fire department ambulance, about half an hour after the accident. She never regained consciousness. Mrs. Gersmehl, wife of Edward Gersmehl, tavernkeeper, was injured seriously in the crash. While x-rays have not yet been completed, it was known that she suffered back injuries and possible internal injuries. (snip) According to Sheriff Norman Berkedal, who visited the scene of the accident Sunday morning with District Attorney John R. Cashman and Dr. Gerald Rau, county coroner, the cars met as the Gersmehl machine was headed south and the Nelson car north near the top of the hill. The Gersmehl car, he said, was going over a knoll and Nelso was coming up the hill when Mrs. Gersmehl evidently lost control of the machine and swerved sharply to the left side of the road, into the path of Nelson's car. Cars Badly Damaged The Nelson car hit the Gersmehl machine on the right front side where Miss Schwantz was sitting. Both cars were badly damaged, Berkedal said that if the crash had not occurred the Gersmehl car would have left the road and plunged down an 18 foot embankment. Coroner Rau immediately ordered an inquest yesterday and selected a coroner's jury at Kiel. The (continued on page 9) inquest will be held as soon as Mrs. Gersmehl is able to leave the Plymouth hospital, he said. (snip) Miss Schwantz, according to Rau, suffered a basal skull fracture and fractures of both legs in addition to internal injuries. Oswald Schultz, route 2 Elkhart Lake, was one of the first persons to reach the scene of the accident Sunday and took three of the women to a physician in Kiel. Deputy Hilton Bauman, Kiel, also reached the crash scene shortly after the accident occurred. Miss Schwantz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Schwantz, School Hill, had been employed at the Gersmehl tavern for only a week. Previous to that she lived with her father, a blacksmith. Born in Germany Edith Schwantz was born in Germany Oct. 1, 1919. In 1923 she came to America with her parents. They lived for two years in Minnesota and have spent the last six years at School Hill. She attended the district school at School Hill and then attended the Kiel high school for several years. Survivors include her parents; one brother, Waldemar, at home, and a sister, Ruth, also at home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the C.J. Meiselwitz funeral home. Burial will be made in the Zion Lutheran church cemetery at Louis Corners. Manitowoc Herald Times, May 23, 1938 pp. 1,9 ******** No Negligence Found by Jurors in Fatal Crash Kiel- Finding "no gross negligence on either side", a coroner's jury here Friday afternoon made no charges in connection with the death of Miss Edith Schwant, 18, School Hill, who was killed in an automobile accident May 22 on Highway 57. The accident occurred one and one-half miles southeast of Kiel when the car driven by Mrs. Arno Serstmehl(sic) and in which Miss Schwant was a passenger collided with an automobile driven by T.C. Nelson, Kiel. Coroner Gerald A. Rau, Manitowoc, called the inquest and District Atty. John R. Cashman, Manitowoc, questioned the witnesses. The jury consisting of Winford H. Johnson, L.O. Rehm, Melvin C. Timm, Raymond Beckmann, Lloyd Berray and L.H. Christel, reached its decision in less than an hour. REV. MICHAEL J. ZUBERBIER On December 3, 2022, the Lord Jesus called Rev. Michael Jon Zuberbier to heavenly glory. He was born on August 10, 1965, to Theodore and Marian Zuberbier, and made a child of God through the waters of Christian Baptism on August 21, 1965, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Manitowoc, WI by his grandfather Prof. T.W. Zuberbier. On May 6, 1979, he was confirmed in the Christian faith at Mt. Lebanon Church in Milwaukee, WI. He continued his Christian education at three Bible- based schools, which prepared him for pastoral ministry: Martin Luther Preparatory School in Prairie du Chien, WI, Northwestern College in Watertown, WI, and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI. Reverend Zuberbier was ordained and installed at the dual parishes of St. John’s and Good Shepherd in Gladwin and Beaverton, MI where he served from 1991-1995. The other two congregations he served in his 31-year ministry were Emanuel in Tawas City, MI (1995-2006) and St. Peter’s in Fond du Lac, WI (2006-2022). Pastor Zuberbier was known for his knowledge of the Bible, his passion for the history of the Lutheran Reformation, his rock-solid reliability, his down to earth communication style, and his commanding presence tempered by a love for Jesus and the souls for which he died. On August 8, 1987, Michael married his high-school sweetheart Pamela (nee Schweitzer) at St. Paul’s in Fort Atkinson, WI. Over 35 years of marriage, they enjoyed raising three children, camping, traveling, and visiting grandchildren. In recent years, they especially enjoyed spending time on their farm property outside Manitowoc, WI. Often the family’s mood on Sunday afternoons in the Fall and Winter seasons depended on whether the Packers won. Michael enjoyed hunting, working on cars and boats, and finding a good deal. He made friends wherever he went and was always ready with a joke, no matter the situation. Nieces, nephews, family, and friends looked forward to whatever spontaneity and fun he would bring to an experience. His contagious laugh could lighten a mood. Michael’s large heart was filled with love for family and friends. Michael is survived by his parents Theodore and Marian, wife Pamela, children: Benjamin (Hannah, nee Freiberg) Zuberbier of Columbus, WI, Luther (Allie, nee Krueger) of Norfolk, NE, Mollie (Chris) Cooper of Chicago, IL; siblings: Charlotte (Wayne) Schoch of Zumbrota, MN, Karl (Patricia) Zuberbier of Kiel, WI, Thomas Zuberbier of Beaver Dam, WI, Kris (James) Schlevensky of Greenfield, WI; and grandchildren Theodore, Eloise, Jack, Raymond, Bonnie, May and June, along with two on the way! VISITATION will be at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 1600 South Main Street, Fond du Lac, on Thursday, December 8, 2022 from 4:00-8:00 PM and Friday, December 9, 2022 from 9:00-11:00 AM. SERVICE: Christian Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter's Ev. Lutheran Church, with Rev. Luke Boehringer and Prof. Keith Wessel officiating.
