CHRISTIAN GOEDEKE CHRISTIAN GOEDEKE, a prosperous farmer of the town of Herman, was born in Hornhausen Preusen, on the 16th of August, 1809. Mr. Goedeke was reared and educated in his native land, and was married to Miss Lucitte Baumman, who was a native of Rels, Westphalia, Germany, near the border of Holland. Of this marriage there were born three children, one son and two daughters. After the death of his wife, Mr. Goedeke and one child emigrated to the United States, arriving in 1849 in New York. In 1854 he was again married, the lady of his choice being Miss Christine Witte, who was born in Germany. Unto this union were born five children, three sons and two daughters, as follows: Mary, the eldest, who became the wife of Adolph Knorr, of Chilton, a tanner by trade and quite prominently identified with the leather manufactories of that place, and of Sheboygan and Centreville; Robert; Flora, the wife of Ferdinand Glosew, a merchant of Medford, Wis.; Louise, who married Nicholas Stetter and resides in Washburn; and William, a merchant of the same place. All are natives of the town of Herman, born on section 34, where the old homestead is located. In early life our subject learned the trade of wood-turner, and was conceded to be a fine workman in his line. During his residence in Herman Township, Mr. Goedeke became well acquainted with the use of the axe, and many acres now cultivated were cleared of the forest by him. To the original purchase he added from time to time, until four hundred acres were owned. The valuable farm now owned by his son Robert is a part of this tract. To-day this fine farming land, under a high state of cultivation, stands as a monument to his toil, and to the privations and hardships endured by himself and faithful wife. Mr. Goedeke now lives in the town of Meeme, having retired from active business. He has never known a sick day in his life, and although he has reached the advanced age of eighty-five years is well preserved in body and mind, enjoying the fruits of his labor and care. Robert Goedeke, who resides on the old homestead, was born there August 14, 1855. He was reared on his father's farm and received his education in the common schools. December 30, 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Frederica Herzog, the ceremony occurring in Sheboygan Falls, at the home of the bride's parents, John and Catherine Herzog. The following spring the young couple sought their fortunes in the copper regions of Lake Superior, where they remained two years. Tiring of the hard work in the mines, Mr. Goedeke removed to the town of Meeme, where he was engaged in farming. A year later he returned to the old home, which has since been his residence. Mr. and Mrs. Goedeke have three bright children: George, Alma and Hedwig. This happy little family was celebrating the father's thirty-eighth birthday on the day that this sketch was written. FERDINAND LAWRENZ SON IS REPRIMANDED BY COUNTY JUDGE CHLOUPEK FOR UNFILIAL CONDUCT August Loverance(sic), of Meeme, Turned His Aged and Enfeebled Father Out of the House - Town Board Stepped In Another case of domestic infelicity has followed the troubles of the Szcepanskiy in the county court. This case is one of a son's unwillingness to care for his aged and enfeebled father. The son is August Loverance(sic) of Meeme and his father is Ferdinand. On Feb. 15, last, August Loverance called upon the town board of Meeme of which Joe Connell is chairman, to take charge of his father, whom he was unwilling longer to support. He claimed that his father wouldn't work. Chairman Connell, however, upon investigation, found that the old man was well spoken of by every one as being willing to work in so far as his strength permitted. Mr. Connell therefore visited the Loverances to remonstrate with August, who is fairly well fixed financially. He found the old man with hands very much swollen and showing every sign of being in very poor condition physically. As argument with the son produced no effect whatever, Ferdinand was finally removed to the farm of Hubbard Simon. The son August, however, refused to contribute a cent to his father's support so after much argument and useless persuasion on the part of the town officials, the case was at last brought up before Judge Chloupek in the county court. The hearing was set for Monday afternoon. August and his lawyer, Ed. Schmitz, of the firm of Schmitz, Burke and Craite were present as were also the town board. Joe Connell, Dave Lorfeldt and John Bushman, and the father Ferdinand. The son told his story and it failed to make much impression on the court. The father then told his. He spoke perfectly rationally maintaining that he had been sick, coughing blood, etc., but that when able he was willing to work. Both sides were closely questioned by the court and by Mr. Schmitz and at one time the father and son engaged in a prolonged wrangle, which had finally to be stopped. Enough was elucidated to give the son a rather sorry appearance in the eyes of respectable men and Judge Chloupek sharply told him as much. He appeared so obstinate, however, that even his attorney took a hand and read him a severe lecture on the duty of a son to his father. It was finally decided that the son should be made to sign an agreement to take his father back and care for him properly, the father agreeing to work when able to do so. Both parties consented to this and the agreement was then and there drawn up and signed. The son upon suggestion of Chairman Connell promised to settle with Hubbard Simon for the board of the father for three weeks Manitowoc Pilot, March 24, 1904 p.1 ******** (1900 Meeme twp. census: August Lawrenc age 40 b.1860; wife Ernestine 32 b.1868; Minne 10 b.1889; Ida 9 b.1891; Ella 5 b.1894; father Ferdinand 65 b.1834) ********* (1910 Meeme census: August K.F. ERWALD AUGUST LENZ Farm Youth is First Highway Fatality in The County for 1938 Ewald (sic) Lenz of Meeme Is Killed When Car Overturns; Girl Is Injured Manitowoc county’s first highway fatality for 1938 took the life of Ewald August Lenz, 25-year-old town of Meeme youth, shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Highway 149 and County Trunk M midway between School Hill and Liberty Pole. The car overturned and rolled end over end at least three times. Norma Karstedt, 17, School Hill, who was riding with Lenz, suffered only minor bruises, shock and exposure, the latter from a walk of over a mile through the snow without shoes or a hat to seek help for her companion. Miss Karstedt tried to secure assistance at two farmhouses near the scene of the crash but her pounding and shouts failed to awaken the residents and she stumbled on up the road toward School Hill. Almost Instantly Killed. His chest was badly crushed and he had severe neck injuries. Lenz and Miss Karstedt had been at School Hill playing cards Saturday evening. They left in Lenz’s car at about 1 a.m. and drove south on County Trunk M. Although nobody saw the actual crash, authorities said Lenz must have been driving too fast when he reached the intersection where the highway curves slightly to the east. The car, a coach, evidently went through the arterial stop, veered to the left side of the road and went off into a field. The machine slid along on two wheels for about 40 feet. At that point Lenz evidently made some effort to turn back to the road, for the path of the car through the snow curved back. At that point the machine overturned, tipping end over end, crushing in the front end and badly denting the top as it rolled. According to authorities there was a patch of ice on the west side of the highway but the Lenz car did not hit it. Miss Karstedt, badly shaken up and frightened by the crash, was incoherent in her description of the accident. It was probable, authorities said, that she may have been unconscious, for a short time after the smashup. She said she believes she spoke to Lenz shortly after the crash and that he answered. She walked to a nearby farmhouse for help, without shoes, which had been knocked from her feet by the crash. Sheriff Norman Berkedal, upon investigating the accident, a short time later, found the shoes outside of the car. Unable to arouse anyone at the farm, Miss Karstedt went back to the wreck and tried to get Lenz to speak. Leaves Again For Aid “He didn’t talk, he didn’t answer me,” she told Dr. Foley later. She left the wreck again and started toward School Hill, stopping in a fruitless attempt to awaken occupants of another farmhouse down the road. Meanwhile John Ahl, Newton route 1, accompanied by Milton Lutzke, Sheboygan, and Norbert Bonde, Valders route 1, reached the scene of the accident. A moment later Milton Meyer and Norbert Lenz, brother of the dead youth, also drove to the wrecked car. Lenz, with Lutzke and Meyer, took the body of his brother to Dr. Foley’s office in St. Nazianz in Meyer’s car. Ahl picked up Miss Karstedt, over a mile up the road from the scene of the crash. She was taken first to St. Nazianz and then to the Holy Family hospital in Manitowoc for treatment. Sheriff Berkdeal was called a few minutes after the crash was discovered, and went to St. Nazianz with District Attorney John R. Cashman. Dr. Gerald Rau, County coroner, Two Rivers, also was called. Dr. Rau pronounced the death accidental and said there would be no inquest. Was Born in Meeme Ewald August Lenz, son of Mr. and Mrs. August W. Lenz, town of Meeme, was born October 30, 1912 in the town of Meeme, where his parents own and operate a farm. He attended the district school and upon graduation, was employed for several years on various farms throughout the county. For the past year he had been employed at the Garden Toy Company in Sheboygan. Several days ago Mr. Lenz, father of the accident victim, purchased a farm and had planned that the boy would move to it and run it this coming spring. Survivors besides the parents, include four brothers, Norbert, Alvis and Clarence, all at home, and Arno of Green Lake. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at two o’clock from the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church at Louis Corners. The Rev. Harold O. Grunwald will officiate. Manitowoc Herald News, July 10, 1925 p.9 ********* AN APPRECIATION Notice of the death of Mrs. John Loos of Louis Corners reached here today and brought back memories of many years ago. The writer was a teacher in the school where her children assembled and a member of the household during that time. Over a third of a century has gone since then but the old friendship survives all these years. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Loos was always open, the latch key always on the outside. Many of the teachers of those days will bear the same testimony. The friendship of Mr. and Mrs. Loos was a treasure and one that neither fear nor favor could change. Mr. and Mrs. Loos have gone and soon will be remembered only by the inscription over their graves. But to Mrs. Connell and to me, who knew them so well and received so much consideration and advice in our early days, the printed words is only the ghost that hovers over the graves of the truest friends that we have met in our life.
