ESTHER LAUBER TWO HELD FOR DEATH OF TWO RIVERS GIRL Arrests at Milwaukee Follow Operation that Led to Death Two men are held at Milwaukee in connection with the death in that city of Miss Esther Lauber, 25, Two Rivers girl, alleged victim of an illegal operation. The girl's death occurred at a Milwaukee hospital Saturday and following refusal of the attending physician to sign a death certificate, the two men were taken into custody and are said to have admitted the charge. An indictment of the two is expected, one for manslaughter and the other on a charge of being an accessory. The men held are Walter Stray, 32, of 2436 Vine Street and Herman Mittelman, 20, of 1529 Chestnut street, Milwaukee. The latter had been keeping company with the girl, and according to the police, is the man who induced his friend, Stray, to perform an illegal operation upon her. Pair Confess, Claim The police Sunday declared that both Stray and Mittelman admitted their responsibility and Capt. Harry McCrory, head of the detective bureau, said that Stray made a full and complete confession, saying that he had made a study of certain illegal practices from medical books which he purchased. He declared he performed the operation "to help out his friend." Mittelman's story coincided with that told by Stray, and, in addition to that, the police have the story of Dr. Peter J. Merten, who cared for the girl after she had been removed to the Milwaukee Maternity and General hospital, Dr. Merten was called in by Stray, the police said, when Stray became frightened because of her illness and the physician immediately ordered her removal to the hospital, where she died yesterday. Manslaughter Evidence Following her death, Dr. Merten refused to sign a death certificate until after the coroner's office had conducted an investigation. Before his investigation had hardly been started the two men had been taken into custody. GEORGE LAWRENCE Believed Lake Michigan Hold Body of George Lawrence of this City, Drowned at Two Rivers on Night April 6 - Family Fears for the Worse A Press representative returned from Two Rivers this afternoon after investigating the disappearance of George Lawrence of this city and there is little question but that he is dead, having drowned in the river there about 2 o'clock on the morning of April 6. George Lawrence, Henry Lawrence in company with a cousin, Frank Hoffmann, left this city three weeks ago Tuesday for Two Rivers, intending to get work in the Aluminum Factory there. On Sunday, April 6, the three were seen about the streets of Two Rivers and later George Lawrence started out along toward the aluminum plant and while going along the dock he is believed to have lost his balance and fallen into the river. Herman Krueger, night fireman at the Aluminum plant heard cries for help and hastening to the point where the cries for help came from, he could see nothing and could find no evidence that anyone had fallen into the river. Ed Gauthier who resides in Two Rivers was acquainted with George Lawrence and commended an investigation himself. He learned that Henry Lawrence and Frank Hoffmann had left Two Rivers while George Lawrence had remained behind. Then to it was learned that the three were seen near a point on the East side, a short time before the accident and here they parted, George remaining in Two Rivers and the other two leaving town. A mother and wife anxiously await news from Two Rivers, hoping against hope. A representative of the Press, on conversation with the Captain of the Life Saving Station at Two Rivers, stated that the river had been dragged in hopes of recovering the body with no success. It is his belief that the current carried the body out into the lake. George Lawrence was 25 years of age and besides his mother, a sister and brother, has a wife and one son, 4 years of age. There is sadness in the home but a spark of hope is ever present. As the mailman approaches the house at 1341 Mehrtens Street each morning, the mother and wife await anxiously his coming, thinking that there is some message from the lost one that he is among the living. Sheboygan Press, Sat., April 19, 1913 page 1 ******** BODY FOUND IN RIVER The body of George Lawrence, who was drowned on the morning of April 6 at Two Rivers, Wis., was found at 3 o'clock this afternoon while the government dredge was at work on the harbor. While dredging, the body was brought to the surface and the life savers went to the scene and the body was removed to the undertaking parlors and notice sent to the relatives in this city. George Lawrence, in company with his brother and a cousin, Frank Hoffmann, left this city the early part of April in search of work. At an early morning hour, Lawrence, who was walking along the dock, fell into the river. His cries were heard at the time and a search was made. Mrs. Lawrence, the wife, has lived in hopes that there might still be a ray of hope, but all of this was dispelled this afternoon when the message was received from Two Rivers. Only last evening a local publication endeavored to create the impression that the story published in the Press of some days ago was not the truth and that Lawrence was still alive. Besides his mother, Lawrence is survived by a wife and one child. The body will be brought here for interment. Sheboygan Press - Fri., April 25, 1913 - page 1 ******* EXTRA DRAG RIVER FOR MISSING MAN TWO RIVERS Life savers at Two Rivers are dragging the river for the body of Wm Lawrence(sic), a Sheboygan man who is missing and who left Sheboygan to visit at Two Rivers. Lawrence is believed to have lost his life two weeks ago when the watchman at the Aluminum works was routed out by cries for help coming down the river. Reaching the scene he failed to find anyone and it is believed that the man went down before held could reach him. The ice had just left the river and upon report from Sheboygan that Lawrence had not returned the search was instituted today but up to a late hour without result. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Apr. 15, 1913 page 4 ********** LAWRENCE MAY HAVE WALKED INTO RIVER According to the Two Rivers Chronicle, George Lawrence, the Sheboygan man believed drowned in the river there, may have walked into the river while under the influence of liquor. The Chronicle says that previous to his disappearance, Lawrence had been "under the weather". It is said that the man was mixed up with others in the disappearance of a quantity of whiskey at Sheboygan and came to Two Rivers to evade arrest. The body has not been found. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Apr. 16, 1913 page 4 ********* BODY OF LAWRENCE FOUND IN RIVER AT TWO RIVERS TODAY (Special to the Herald) Two Rivers, April 25- Missing since March 29, the body of George Lawrence, a Sheboygan man who disappeared while visiting in this city, was taken from the river at the foot of Jefferson Street this afternoon. Coroner Falge at Manitowoc was notified and an inquest will be held. The dredge 'Algoma' brought up the body while at work in the river, the point where the body was recovered being at the harbor entrance, some distance from the point where it was thought Lawrence had lost his life. The life saving crew dragged the river several days ago but without success. Lawrence leaves a wife and child and an aged mother at Sheboygan. PAUL LINDENAU TWO RIVERS MAN MEETS DEATH IN SEWER CAVE-IN Children Find the Body Of Man Buried In Trench TWO RIVERS, May 4- Paul Lindenau, local contractor met death yesterday in a cave-in of a sewer ditch which he was excavating under a sidewalk in the north section of the city, on the Mishicot road. Mr. Lindenau's body was discovered some time after the accident and physicians said that the man had probably been dead three hours before the body was taken from the sewer trench. Children returning from school late yesterday afternoon discovered the tragedy when they noticed the feet of a man protruding from the trench, the body being covered by dirt which had caved in on him. Louis Hartung who was notified by the children of their ghastly find, summoned assistance and removed the body and physicians were called but the man was dead. Working On Last Pipe Investigation showed that Lindenau was making the connection for the last pipe when he met his death. He had excavated a tunnel under the cement walk and was engaged in work of fitting the pipe alone when the wall of the trench gave way and imprisoned him under the cave-in. Mr. Lindenau when he secured the contract for the work said that he did not feel that he should attempt it alone and would secure a helper but he had failed to do so and his failure to have assistance was responsible for his death as had he been accompanied by a helper, at the time of the cave-in it might have been possible to rescue him. Was Unmarried Man Mr. Lindnau was about 36 years of age and unmarried. He had made his home at Two Rivers most of his life and formerly operated a jitney service between Two Rivers and Manitowoc. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Edward Albright, Two Rivers and Mrs. Walter Grade of Watertown. Funeral arrangements have not been ocmpleted (sic). Manitowoc Herald News, Friday, May 4, 1923 P.1
