Manitowoc Herald Times, Tuesday, February 23, 1960, page 11 (Pallbearers omitted for privacy) ******** Two Rivers Reporter-Fred Mertens sent a cablegram to relatives here Monday from Archangel, Russia where he is serving with the American forces. The message said "Merry Christmas. Am Well." In a letter received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mertens last week he told of intense cold in that region, Archangel being a port on the White Sea, an arm of the Arctic ocean. He said the men have plenty of clothing and other necessities. The letter was written in a box car. He had been in the trenches shortly before. The troops are there to oppose the Russian Bolsheviki and the inhabitants who are also opposed to the latter are of course very friendly to the allied soldiers. Mr. Mertens know of no other Wisconsin men in the army near Archangel, from this vicinity. Manitowoc Herald News, Saturday, December 28, 1918, Page 4 ********* Fred Mertens, a Two Rivers boy who probably saw as much if not more hard service in the army than any Manitowoc County man is back home. Mertens was in for two years and was selected among men to be sent into Russia with the American forces and while he has returned as hale and hearty as when he left, he saw more suffering from cold, exposure and hunger than most of the lads in regular service. Several times it was reported that Mertens was among the missing but he managed to escape these dangers our troops were in, in the land of the Bolsheviki where they were at the mercy of the most savage and heartless enemy of the great war. Manitowoc Herald News, Thurs., July 17, 1919 page 2 ********* BACK FROM THE FAR NORTH After spending ten months fighting Bolsheviks in northern Russia, Fred Mertens, who served in the 339th Infantry, arrived home last Thursday night. He left Archangel, one of 1600 soldiers, June 3 in the only transport in port and preceded by ice crushers, they steamed northward 400 miles into the Artic Sea and in ten days landed at Brest, France. In their journey through the Artic Ocean, they saw many seals on icebergs and also encountered a fleet of seal hunters. The returning troops embarked at Brest on the steamer Van Stueben arriving at New York June 30. The experiences in north Russia were very trying. Of the ten months service, Corporal Mertens was able to get only 26 days rest. The other time was spent on the front line trenches where they fought hard to keep the enemy from flanking them. On the front lines, Corporal Mertens says, they lived in log houses and dugouts. The log huts were sometimes destroyed by enemy shells. The most critical period was about last February when the Bolshevik army made a strong effort to cut off our men from the seas. The officers addressed the American soldiers acquainting them with the desperate situation. Then came a period of extreme cold which preverted enemy activity and enabled the American troops to strengthen their lines which held. Hard tack and bully beef was the principal food of our soldiers. The field of operations was in the land "of the midnight sun" and Corporal Mertens says that they could read a newspaper without a light at twelve and one o'clock at night in the month of June. The Reporter, Thurs., July 17, 1919 ********* Fred Mertens and Miss Frances Bonk, of Two Rivers, were married today. Mr. Mertens will leave for Camp Custer Saturday and his many young friends have arranged a farewell party in his honor which will take place at Washington hall next Friday evening. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Wednesday, January 24, 1917, Page 3 ******** DEATH CALLS OLD TIMER AND CIVIL WAR VETERAN Fred Mertens, Aged 86, Dies After Short Illness at His Home CAME HERE IN YEAR 1852 Went Downtown As Usual and Paid His Taxes Last Week The fast thinning ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic lost another comrade Monday morning when death called Fred Mertens, aged 86, at his home on Jefferson Street. Mr. Mertens had been ailing for some time and took to his bed Saturday. But on Wednesday, he was still well enough to visit the city treasurer's office to pay his taxes. Deceased was one of the city's old timers. He changed his residence when for a time he resided on a farm near Shoto where he lived twenty-five years. Later he again made his home in this city and resided here until his death. Mr. Mertens was born in Hanover, Germany in 1831. He came to America in 1852 with Mrs. Mertens, they having been married in the old country just before sailing. In the early days he was employed in the lumber industry here until 186? when he enlisted. His wife died eight years ago and since that time he resided alone in his home although his children desired him to make their home with them. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon from St. John's Lutheran Church. A few of the old soldier comrades were present to honor their departed comrade. Decedent is survived by five sons, Fred, John William and Henry Mertens of this city and Herman of Sheboygan and four daughters, Mrs. Fred Luecke and Mrs. Chas. Miller of Manitowoc, Mrs. Ed. Klozinski of Kossuth and Mrs. William Robinson of Chicago. The Reporter, Fri, Jan. 26, 1917 ******** [Frederic Mertens] ******** The Old Timers column will be continued as long as we find the persons who have a vivid recollection of the early days and who are entitled to recognition as Old Timers by having lived in this vicinity previous to 1856. Among the earliest settlers of Two Rivers who survive is Frederick Mertens, who came here in 1852 from Hanover, Germany. He had just been married and the couple enjoyed the long trip to America by sailing vessel as a honeymoon trip. They came to Chicago by rail and from thence by side wheel steamer and landed on the old pier here in September. They stayed for several days at the hotel which was conducted by Mr. Gebhardt on the site of the Waverly Hotel. Then Mr. Mertens found employment in the lumbering industry. The work in which he was engaged consisted in loading vessels and scows with lumber and ties. On one occasion, Mr. Mertens relates he nearly lost his life while on board a vessel anchored off the shore here which he was helping load with ties. They had been taken aboard on a yawl in calm weather. The ties had been floated out to the vessel to be transferred on board. While the loaders were on board, a furious storm arose. Dr. Oswald overheard some fishermen express the belief that the vessel could not weather the storm. In a short time it was driven on shore by the gale and was in danger of going to pieces. Dr. Oswald went to Mr. Gebhardt, resolved to see that something was done to rescue the men on board. He agreed to give $20 to pay some fishermen for manning a boat to take them off. Mr. Gebhardt contributed $5. The fishermen were persuaded to make the attempt and Mr. Mertens and his companions among which were Henry Hempke, deceased, and five others whose names he does not recollect, were taken from the schooner. The next morning she had gone to pieces. Mr. Mertens moved to Neshoto after a few years where he found employment in the lumber industry. In 1984 he enlisted in the army. Soon after his return from the war he settled on a farm near Neshoto where he resided twenty-five years. While on the farm, he and his family had a narrow escape from a fire which destroyed their dwelling at 2 o'clock in the morning. The fire originated on the outside of the building and Mr. Mertens was not awakened until the entire building was in flames. He then carried four of his children out, one at a time, not having time to awaken them. For the past eight years, Mr. Mertens has resided here. His wife died four years ago. During her illness which lasted eight weeks, he nursed her night and day. The continued strain was too much for him and a nervous breakdown resulted, from which however, he has now recovered excepting that his limbs have been weakened and he finds it difficult to walk a long distance. His eighty-three years rest lightly upon him. His hair has not turned gray and his health is good. On Sunday (tomorrow) he will make a twenty-five mile journey with his horse and buggy to Kossuth. In spite of his advanced age, he made it a daily practice to take a morning walk and left home as usual this morning and when he failed to return after several hours' absence, search was made for him. A cane which Mr. Meyer was never without on his walks was found driven into the ground on the river bank near the place where the body was recovered and it is believed had been placed there by Meyer to direct searchers whom he know would look for him. His handkerchief was tied to the cane and his hat was placed on it. The cane was found near Aluminum Goods Co., but no one has been found who witnessed tragedy. When the hat and cane of the missing man were found near the river, the conviction was forced that the body would be found in the water and work of dragging the river was immediately started. The body was recovered within a few minutes after the dragging was started and immediately identified as Meyer was well known. Whether death was due to suicide, an accident or other cause is not known and an effort is being made to trace the man's movements after he left home this morning. He is survived by two daughters, one making her home at Sheboygan and the other in Two Rivers. Manitowoc Herald News, Thurs., July 5, 1923 page 1 ********* MEETS DEATH IN RIVER YESTERDAY Charles Meyer, one of the old residents of here found his death in the West Twin River yesterday morning. His cane was found struck in the grown near the south approach of Monroe Street bridge after the body had been taken from the river and his hat with a handkerchief inside was hanging upon it. His body was seen floating in the river by the watchman of Aluminum Goods Plant No. 4 who summoned help and brought it ashore in a scow. Mr. Meyer at that time still showed signs of life. The Coast Guard was summoned and they tried resuscitation but he had passed away. It was found that several ribs were broken, caused it is thought by striking a pole. The blow rendered him unconscious and breathless and for that reason the body floated. The coroner decided that no inquest would be necessary. Deceased was born in Germany 87 years ago and came to Two Rivers about 65 years ago. He was for many years baggage and freight man at the C & NW station here and had a wide acquaintance. He was engaged in the fishing business ere and later, before working for the railroad company, he was employed by the Two Rivers Manufacturing Company, supervising the rafting of logs down the river here. JOHN MILLER FORMER TWO RIVER MAN DIES AT MILWAUKEE John Miller, a veteran of the Civil war, who held the position of janitor of the public schools of Two Rivers for many years, died at National Home, Milwaukee, and the body was brought to Two Rivers for burial yesterday. For 21 years Mr. Miller was a familiar character about the city schools. He will be remembered by most of the older boys and girls. About twenty years ago he resigned the position of janitor and went to live with his brother-in-law, Chas. Willert, who owns a farm west of the city. Since the death of his wife, about a year ago, Mr. Miller has been an inmate of the Soldiers' Home. For some time past he has been suffering with rheumtism and his death was caused by an affliction of the heart. Mr. Miller was 74 years old. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Wednesday, January 5, 1916 P.5 ********* POPULAR OLD RESIDENT DEAD The death of John Miller of Soldier's Home, Milwaukee, Saturday, closed the life of an old and popular resident of Two Rivers. Mr. Miller was for about twenty years the janitor of the city schools until twenty years ago when the family moved away to reside on a farm a few miles west of here. Owing to an accident many years ago, while at work in a brick yard in this city, he lost one arm. The accident occurred in the brick yard of Hamilton & Damler. A stone crusher was being used. Mr. Miller was shoveling material into the crusher when his shovel became caught in the roles. He clung to it and his arm was caught and mangled so that amputation was necessary. The amputation was performed by Dr. Pritchard who tells about his patient being up and around the following morning. Nothwithstanding this disability, Mr. Miller attended to his duties as janitor in a very satisfactory manner and the hundreds who went to school at the time, cherish pleasant recollections of him as a conscientious and faithful caretaker of the school premises. He was familiarly though respectfully known as "one arm Miller" to distinguish him from the many of that name. Mr. Miller served through the civil war having enlisted in the state of Illinois. He was a resident of this city since the early seventies. The cause of Mr. Miller's death was pneumonia. The body was brought to this city Monday to the home of his two daughters, Mrs. Selk and Miss Minnie Miller. The funeral was held from Grace Church Tuesday afternoon. Besides three daughters the deceased is survived by one son. He was born in Mecklenberg, Germany 73 years ago. The Reporter, Fri., Jan. 7, 1916 ******** news article: A terrible accident happened in Two Rivers yesterday afternoon. John Miller, while at work in the steam brick making establishment in that village, in some manner, got his left arm caught in the gearing connected with the works and had his left arm drawn between two rollers, set a little over an inch apart, crushing the elbow joint to atoms and literally scraping the flesh, muscles, etc., from the bones from the hand to the shoulders, besides tearing away a portion of the side of the chest - one of the most terrible physicians have ever treated. The arm was amputated about three inches below the shoulder and the unfortunate man's life is not yet despaired of, although the odds are at present greatly against his recovery. Mr. Miller is a middle age man and has a family. We sincerely hope his life will be saved. Manitowoc Tribune, Thurs., Aug. 26, 1875

JACOB MOSELER Deaths: Mosler- In the village of Two Rivers on Friday, June 23, 1876, of consumption, Jacob Mosler, son of John Mosler, aged 17 years. Manitowoc Tribune, June 29, 1876
JOHN MOSELER (Sent in by a family member, see contributors page) I don't have the name of the paper...it is missing on the top of my copy from microfilm but it says Vol. 13. He died 22 July 1915. POPULAR OLD TIMER GONE The funeral of John Moseler Sunday was largely attended. Judge Schmidt of Manitowoc delivered the funeral oration which contained many beautiful sentiments fitting to the occasion. John Moseler was born in Groef (Krov*), Germany in 1832 (November 30). He grew to manhood there and when about 20 years of age he and thirteen other young men set out for America and Mr. Moseler came to Two Rivers and went to work in a saw mill up at Neshoto. That was in May 1854. The next year he returned to Two Rivers and when the chair factory started in 1856 he found employment there and continued to work there for thirty-five years with the exception of one year spent at his old home in Germany. From 1896 to 1910 Mr. Moseler was city treasurer which position he conducted efficiently handling in that time millions of dollars. He lost by death eleven of the children bor to him and buried two wives in 45 years and of late was confined to bed with an illness of nearly two years duration. Through all his troubles, Mr. Moseler was a cheerful philosopher accepting his lot with patience and fortitude and emerging from his difficulties light hearted and good natured as he ever was. Although greatly weakened from old age Mr. Moseler had entirely recovered from his long illness and his death came after an illness of a day. He is survived by five children George of Howards Grove, Louis of Mellen, Nicholas of Ishpeming, Mrs. M. Cordts of Milwaukee and Mrs. Frank Lamach and one brother, Franz Moseler of this city. *Believed to be Krov. *********** JOHN MOSELER WHO SERVED 14 YEARS AS TREASURER AT TWO RIVERS, DEAD AT AGE OF 82 YRS. John Moseler, former city treasurer of Two Rivers, who held the office for fourteen consecutive years and retired donly because he refused longer to serve, was buried there Sunday, the funeral being one of the largest the city has had in years. Judge A. H. Schmidt of this city, delivered the eulogy. Mr. Moseler was 82 years of age, having been born at Croef, Germany, in 1833. He located at Two Rivers in 1854. Mr. Moseler was prominent in democratic politics of Manitowoc county for years and retained his interest in public affairs up to the time of his death. He was well known throughout the county. Manitowoc Herald Times dated July 27, 1915 (Thursday) page 8. ********* OLD TIMERS Adversity and trouble (and he has had his share of that) have not destroyed the cheerfulness of John Moseler. He lost by death eleven of the children born to him, has buried two wives in forty-five years, besides the ordinary troubles of life that befall all men and of late has been confined to bed with an illness of nearly two years duration. Through all his troubles, Mr. Moseler has been a cheerful philosopher accepting his lot with patience and fortitude and emerging from his difficulties, light hearted and good natured as he ever was. He is past 80 years of age and is very well after his long siege of illness. He claims to be able to walk as well as he could about 79 years ago notwithstanding his old age. Such witticism is characteristic of him. He is much given to wit and humor. John Moseler has held positions of trust and ?? in Two Rivers. Besides being an alderman for several years, he was the city treasurer for 1896 to 1910, 14 years. During that time he handled millions of dollars and his accounts were always straight. John Moseler is a democrat and had voted the democratic ticket at every presidential election beginning with Buchanan. John Moseler came to Two Rivers in May, 1854 and went immediately to Neshoto where he worked in a saw mill. A year later he came back to Two Rivers. In 1856 the chair factory started and he found employment there for thirty-five years. During the first two years he did not receive a cent of cash, nor did any of the employes. They were given store pay - groceries and other necessities. He was unable to pay $1.80 taxes on his house until long after it was due in consequence of this system. The chair factory was built and operated by the New England Manufacturing company. This company brought many workmen from New England but in a few years, they had all returned to the east with the exception of a few among whom were Thos. Hayes, who is now living a retired life here after 20 years of farming in Minnesota and Daniel Van Nostrand, deceased. In the panic of '58 the New England Mfg. Co. was succeeded by Aldrich Smith & Co., and this company was succeeded by Mann Bros. In 1862. The Manns operated the business until 1890 when the plant was shut down finally. Two years ago it was torn down and on its site now stands the plant of the Standard Aluminum Company. John Moseler had the best job in the chair factory for many years. He received a certain amount for each chair on the basis of a jobber. Of fourteen young men aged about 21 years who started for this country one sunny morning from a quiet little village in Germany singing, "We are going to America", Mr. Moseler is the only one remaining alive. Mr. Moseler states that altho during old times in Two Rivers people had to go without a great many things which are now plentiful, they had dances and singing and picnics, which he thinks were more enjoyed than pleasures of today because people then were more contented, took a greater interest in each other and envy and jealousy were comparatively unknown among them. CHARLES E. MUELLER (d. 1933) Charles E. Mueller, 65, Dies Thursday, This Morning AFFLICTION OF HEART CLAIMS CITY'S LEADER Funeral Services To Be Held Monday At Chapel; Friends Are Shocked At Death Death at 3 o'clock this morning claimed one of the city's leading citizens, Charles E. Mueller, 65, at the home of his brother, E. R. Mueller, 2623 Washington street. He had been in poor health for more than a year but became seriously ill with a heart affliction a week ago. He retired 18 years ago from the brewery business, but continued as vice president and a director of the Bank of Two Rivers. About 35 years ago he served on the city council and on the water and light commission. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Beduhn and Goetz chapel, with the Rev. Thomas A. Hawkes officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Pioneers Rest cemetery. Born in Two Rivers May 25, 1868, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Mueller, Mr. Mueller received his education in the public schools and had completed two years in the high school when he went to Milwaukee in 1885 and took a commercial course in a business college in that city. Completing his course he studied for brewmaster under an internationally known professor. Returning to Two Rivers Mr. Mueller built up a state-wide reputation as a brewmaster and made the Mueller Brothers Brewing company famous throughout the territory for its excellent beer. Through him the business became successful in face of the competition from the Milwaukee breweries which dominated sales in the state. Started in 1849 The Mueller brewery was established here in 1849 by Mr. Mueller's grandfather, the late Edward Frederick Mueller who came here from Chemnitz, Germany in 1847, where he held a position of overseer of a brewery and distillery on the estate of Baron Von Gablentz. He was highly educated and was considered a leading chemist in that day. It was Mr. Mueller's friends in Two Rivers and Manitowoc who persuaded him to come here and establish a brewery. The business was never very profitable for him and on several occasions he was tempted to close down his brewery and return to Germany where he was offered a lucrative position. When Mr. Mueller, the founder of the brewery, died in 1871, his son Richard E. Mueller took over the business. As the village developed into a city and the surrounding country grew, the brewery expanded with it and was constantly being improved. He died in 1894 and his sons Charles and Edwin became associated in the management and the brother operated the establishment until Jan. 1, 1915 when it was sold to John J. Eisenbeiss of Chicago. Several years later the name of the firm was changed to the Two Rivers Beverage company, but it continued to brew the famous "Golden Drops" beer originated by Mr. Mueller. After the sale of the brewery Mr. Mueller retired and took charge of the real estate holdings of the Mueller Bros. company. While actively engaged in the management of the brewery, Mr. Mueller from 1898 to 1903 served on the city council, and when the municipal water and light plant was established here, he was appointed to the water and light commission and took a major part in the management of the plant and the construction of the building. Mr. Mueller was independent in politics and never strived for high posts. A public spirited citizen, Mr. Mueller was somewhat of a philanthropist, assisting scores of Two Rivers persons, but his deeds seldom were made known. He was liberal in cases where help was needed. For many years and up to his death Mr. Mueller was vice president and a director of the Bank of Two Rivers. Through his wise counsel and foresight the banking establishment was a success. Fraternally Mr. Mueller was affiliated with the Elks lodge, being one of the charter members of the organization. For more than a dozen years Mr. Mueller spent the winter months at Miami, Florida, where he owned property. Mr. Mueller's death this morning proved a shock to hundreds of friends in Two Rivers, particularly his boyhood companions with whom he associated up to his death. They are Postmaster Conrad Baetz and Charles Kirst, Old timers recall his "gang" which included the above friends, his brother, Edwin, and George Hallauer, who now resides at Danville, Ill. He never married. "Mr. Mueller was a true friend," said Mr. Baetz, with whom he associated most, "and he helped many in Two Rivers and never mentioned his philanthropic activities." The remains can be viewed at the Beduhn and Goetz chapel from 7 to 9 o'clock Saturday night and until the time of the funeral Monday afternoon. Surviving Mr. Mueller are a sister, Mrs. W. S. Bremer of Milwaukee and Edwin R. Mueller of this city, with whom he made his home. Manitowoc Herald Times, December 15, 1933 P. 17

EDWARD MUELLER (d. 1871) DIED - At Two Rivers, in this County, on the 16th day of May 1871, Mr. Edward Mueller at the age of 64 years. It becomes our painful duty to record the death of our dear relative and friend Mr. Edward Mueller, at Two Rivers, on last Tuesday morning, after a long and painful sickness. Our brother was born August 31st, 1807 and was one of the earliest settlers in this County; having come here in 1847 from Saxony, Germany, with his family and made his home in Two Rivers soon after, where then but few white men were to be seen. Having made chemistry in connection with brewing and distilling his main study, and having superintended large establishments of that kind in Germany, he soon started a brewery at his new home and has continued the same ever since. He was a man of the most upright character, beloved by all who ever made his acquaintance, and his death, although not unexpected, is a serious, irreparable loss to his deeply stricken wife, children, and other relatives and to his large circle of sorrowing friends. He will be buried this afternoon with Masonic honors. Manitowoc Tribune Thursday, May 18, 1871 pg. 4 ******** The Funeral of our late brother and friend, Edward Mueller, in Two Rivers was the largest attended and most solemnly conducted, we have witnessed yet anywhere. The whole village of Two Rivers seemed to be in mourning, and all its inhabitants assembled at or near the late residence of the honored deceased. The relatives and friends, the members of the Masonic fraternity and of the Saengerbund arrived from Manitowoc about two o'clock p.m., when soon after the procession started, headed by the brothers of the Manitowoc Lodge No. 55 followed by the hearse with four pall bearers, members of the late Tracy Lodge on each side. Then came the carriage with the family, followed by two others containing the relatives of the honored dead, and those were joined by not less than fifty other conveyances of all descriptions, besides hundreds of mourning friends on foot from Two Rivers, Manitowoc and other adjoining towns. On reaching the grave, the family and relatives with the Masons formed a circle around the last resting place of the deceased, and the Saengerbund sang an appropriate hymn, which was followed by an oration delivered by Mr. G.W. Fechter, then the solemn and beautiful Masonic funeral service was delivered in a most impressive manner, and another beautiful song closed those solemn exercises. Thus another friend and brother has received the last evidences of love and affection, that could be given him on earth, but the remembrance of the beloved dead will ever be cherished by all who knew him during his long residence among us, as a faithful husband, a loving father and trusty friend. The mourning widow, children and relatives of the deceased would tender their heartfelt thanks for the many evidences of kindness and love which were shown to their beloved departed, by the Masonic fraternity, the Saengerbund, the orator Mr. G.W. Fechter, and the host of other friends who honored his memory, and those he left behind, by their presence and assistance at his funeral on Thursday May, 19th, 1871. Dear, Beloved, thou hast left us, We no more thy face shall see, Till we also cross the river There forever to be with thee. Thou hast been so kind and noble In all thy acts while here below, And it seems as if we could not, Could not bear to let thee go. Can it be that thou wilt never Meet with us while here below? Yes, our little band is broken By the silent, deadly foe. Dear, beloved! how we miss thee! But we know 'twill not be long, Soon we'll meet, where there's no Parting There to join in endless song. Manitowoc Tribune Thursday, May 25, 1871 pg. 4
