BENJAMIN B.M. EGGERS (d. 1898) A HEART BREAKING TRAGEDY Last Thursday afternoon while temporarily left alone in the suite of rooms occupied by his parents, little five year old Bennie Eggers was the victim of a fatal mishap of a most shocking and saddening nature. It seems that he was in his sleeping gown and supposed to be in bed but during the absence of his parents, who, by some misunderstanding of arrangements, each supposed the other to be with him, got up and in playing with some matches which he found, somehow set fire to the carpet and table spread in the front room of the suite. Seeing what he had done, he heroically set about subduing the flames and in so doing, his own clothes were set on fire and were literally burned from his body. In the mortal agony which the torturing flames inflicted, the brave little fellow did not lose his presence of mind, but with a strength born of pain and desperation, he did the only thing that was possible for him to do under the circumstances - pushed aside a bureau that stood against a door which opened into a portion of the house his parents did not occupy so that he could get through and then went to the kitchen sink and poured water upon himself. It was here that his calls for help were first heard. The family of Mr. H. Schwake, who owns the house and occupies all but the suite of rooms rented to Mr. Eggers were also temporarily absent from home, except Mrs. Schwake, who was out in the garden at work and a neighbor, Mrs. Leonhardt was with her. The two women ran to the assistance of the unfortunate boy and gave the alarm. They speedily extinguished or tore from his tortured body what was left of the clothing he had on and passers by came in and helped to extinguish the burning carpet. A physician was immediately summoned and the poor boy's parents were sent for but neither medical skill nor tender solicitude and care could turn back the sombre shadows that a cruel and relentless destiny had sent to enshroud him. He died in a few hours after the heart breaking occurrence, death mercifully ending his intense suffering. He was a handsome, honest-faced, manly little fellow and his sad tragic death has wrung the hearts and moistened the eyes of many besides the sorrowing parents, whose grief has awakened such universal sympathy. The funeral took place last Sunday afternoon. It was a beautiful, yet saddening ceremony and the little casket that held the precious dust was buried deep with fragrant flowers, the tribute of loving and sorrowing hearts. Manitowoc County Chronicle, Tues., June 14, 1898 ***** An unfortunate accident occurred last Thursday. We are informed that Mrs. Frank Eggers pulled her small son from the street for some infraction and locked him in the house while she went to attend to some important errands. Shortly afterwards passersby heard terrible shrieks by the child from the house and saw smoke. They were unable to gain entry because the house was locked. Mr. Eggers was working nearby and so entry was achieved and the flames extinguished. But sadly the tot's clothing had caught fire and for him it was too late. He died in terrible pain two hours after being found despite every possible effort by Dr. Currens. It was later determined that the child, during his mother's absence, had gone to a second floor bedroom where he tried to ignite some firecrackers with matches. When his clothing caught fire, instead of extinguishing it in the bedclothes, he ran downstairs in a vain attempt to use water. The well-attended funeral was held Sunday afternoon. Der Nord Westen, June 16, 1898 ***** Bennie Eggers of Two Rivers, a little boy five years old, died last Thursday from the effects of a burning he received. While in his night gown he was playing with some matches which ignited some drapery. In attempting to extinguish the fire his clothing caught fire, and before rescue came he was burned so badly that he died within a few hours. JOHN EGGERS - MINNIE EGGERS Died. Of liver complaint, at his residence on Washington street, Two Rivers, Dec. 23d, at 11 P.M., John Eggers, aged 68 years 10 months. At the residence of Ernest Hammel, corner of Main and Jefferson streets, of scarletina typhoid fever, at 2 P.M., of the same day Minnie, daughter of Wm. and grand-daughter of John Eggers, aged 15 years 5 months. A gloom was cast over our whole village when it was known that just upon the eve of approaching holiday festivities two of our number from the same household, one advanced in years, the other in her teens, but both a few days since enjoying good health and strength, had suddenly received the dread summons. The funeral of both at 2 P.M. ws numerously attended on Christmas day at the Congregational Church. Rev. C.W. Wilson officiating. Deacon Smith also made a few well-timed remarks at the church. John Eggers was born in Holstein, Germany, in 1805, came to Two Rivers in August, 1848, and we believe remained on a piece of land he entered near the Half-way House, on the Mishicott road, for five years. In 1852 he commenced work for Aldrich, Smith & Co., and has remained at his post as master-machanic [sic] of that firm and their successors, now styled the Two Rivers Manufacturing Company, ever since till his death. He was a man of few words, regular, clocklike habits, always in his place, never interfering with the affairs of others. He was a machinist of much more than common ability, a kind husband and father, and though not remarkable for sociability among his neighbors, being naturally taciturn and retiring, was universally respected and esteemed for his unimpeachable integrity, faithfulness and exact honesty. He was much attached to "his Minnie," as he affectionately styled her, she having become a member of his family some eight years ago, where she remained till a few days before her death. After eight years of mutual love and happy every day life, they hand in hand together pursue their way through the "dark valley" to that land where distinctions between age and youth are effaced. "In death they were not divided." Manitowoc Tribune, December 31, 1874, Vol. 21 No. 37, Page 8 Column 2

HOWELL G. EVANS (d. 1963) Howell Evans Dies in Texas Hospital TWO RIVERS-Howell G. Evans, 64, retired former senior vice president of Hamilton Mfg. Co., a former vice president of the United States Chamber of Commerce, and past governor of District 144, Rotary International, and a veteran of World War I, died early Tuesday afternoon at St. Luke Hospital, Houston, Tex., where he had undergone surgery. He had been treated for a heart condition for a number of years which had forced him to limit his broad scope of activities. Mr. Evans had maintained a winter residence with his wife, Dorothy, at McAllen, Texas, and also a summer home at Ephraim, Wis. However, he spent considerable time at Two Rivers the past summer as a result of the failing condition of his mother-in-law, Mrs. H.C. Gowran. He entered the Houston hospital a week ago after he and Mrs. Evans had left Two Rivers for that city Oct. 1. Training Consultant Mr. Evans remained a director of the Hamilton firm, but retired from his post several years ago because of ill health to make his home at McAllen. In the past three years, however, he served as a training consultant to the sales personnel at the company. Howell Gershom Evans was born May 3, 1899, at Cheng-Ku, Shensi Province, in the interior of China, a son of the late Rev. Robert L. and Mary Hunt Evans. His father was a Presbyterian missionary for a number of years in China. When he was a child the family returned to the states and for the next six years Mr. Evans lived in small towns in Illinois and later at St. Louis, Mo., where his father had served churches. When he was 14 Mr. Evans began to work in electric company shops around St. Louis and then became a railway mail clerk on runs from St. Louis to Chicago and Chicago to Des Moines, Iowa. In high school he was the editor of his class paper and took part in dramatics, but was prevented from participating in athletics because of a temporary physical impairment due to illness. Graduated from Wheaton, Ill., College in June of 1922 after serving in World War I in the Student Army Training Corps, he worked his way through college as a restaurant waiter and in the Chicago post office. At Wheaton Mr. Evans had four years of football, served as class president four years and was managing editor of the college paper. Mr. Evans became an instructor in English at Two Rivers Washington High School in September of 1922, the first year of existence of the local school. Two years later he switched to business, taking employment with the Hamilton firm. His first assignment was as a cost clerk in the American Cabinet Co., a division of the Hamilton concern. Next he was an assistant to salesman in order to learn everything possible about the business of selling. After two years of road experience in the sales field with Hamilton he was made sales manager in 1928? In 1933, he also became the firm's treasurer and in 1941, vice president. In 1962, he became senior vice president of the company. In 1954, Mr. Evans was the recipient of the Wheaton College Alumni Distinguished Service Award. Headed Council Under the city manager form of government in Two Rivers, which was initiated through the leadership of his late father-in-law, Harry C. Gowran, longtime Hamilton president who served two terms as mayor, Mr. Evans contributed many years as a councilman and headed the organization on two occasions. He later served on the Board of Education and also was its president. Perhaps one of the best known members in Rotary International, Mr. Evans served the Two Rivers club as its president and in 1938-39, was made governor of District No. 141, Rotary International, embracing all of Wisconsin. He also served as national vice president of the United States Chamber of Commerce some eight years ago. Mr. Evans served as director of Central States Y.M.C.A. for a number of years and for two years was president of the Wis-.. (Turn to Page 2-M, Col. 4)…Evans (Continued from Page One) …consin State Chamber of Commerce as well as active in the Wisconsin Manufacturers Assn. In the trade fields connected with the Hamilton firm operations he was president of the American Dental Trades Assn., a director of the Manufacturers' Surgical Trade Assn, treasurer of the American Home Laundry Manufacturers' Assn., and a director of the National Printing Equipment Assn. A lifelong Presbyterian, Mr. Evans filled the pulpit of scores of churches of the denomination as well as others throughout the country. Funeral Services Besides his wife, the former Dorothy Gowran, whom he married here in June of 1923, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Polly) Oppenheim, of Milwaukee; a son, Howell G. Evans Jr., of Houston; a sister, Mrs. Beatrice E. Evans, of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; and four brothers, Norman and Harris, of Milwaukee, Keith, of Alhambra, Calif., and Gordon K., of New York City and four grandchildren. Mr. Evans' father preceded him in death three years ago. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Manitowoc, the Rev. Gervase Zanotti officiating. Burial will be in Pioneers' Rest Cemetery here. Friends may call at Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels here after 3 p.m. Friday until 11 a.m. Saturday when the casket will be taken to the church where the body will lie in state until the time of service. Memorials may be made with Gideons International through Dudley Watson, First National Bank, McAllen, Texas. Manitowoc Herald Times, October 16, 1963 pp 1, 2-M ********** [bur. 10-19-1963/age 64 yrs.] ********** Pretty Ceremony Is Celebrated at Two Rivers Two Rivers-June 21-Prettiest of the many weddings that have thus far taken place this month was solemnized at Two Rivers last night when Miss Dorothy G. Gowran of that city, became the bride of Howell G. Evans of Two Rivers, formerly of Pasadena, Calif. With every minute detail of the wedding carried out in perfection, it was a simple yet beautiful ceremony and seldom has a prettier event taken place at Two Rivers. Miss Gowran became the bride of Mr. Evans at the home of her parents, the spacious rooms of the Gowrans' home having been literally transformed into a bower of flowers for the event, and as Miss Gowran was a June bride, it was only natural that roses were present in profusion. The ring service was used in uniting the couple, the Rev. S.J. Morris of Ft. Atkinson, former pastor of the Grace Congregational church, officiating at the service, assisted by the Rev. Phillip Mercer, present pastor of Grace church. The ceremony took place at promptly 8 o'clock. Miss Margaret Gowran, the bride's sister, was the maid of honor while the bridesmaids were Miss Alice Kurtz of St. Louis Mo., and Miss Mary Kingsland of Minneapolis, Minn. Norman A. Evans of Pasadena, Calif. brother of Mr. Evans, was best man and the groomsmen were Henry Hamilton of Two Rivers and Wallace B. Graham of Chicago. The ushers were Donald Dean of La Crosse, Fulton Kurtz of St. Louis, J. Orland Stockton of Wheaton, Ill., and Leslie Lohman of Ozark, Ill., formerly of Two Rivers. Attired in Mother's Wedding Gown Radiantly beautiful was the bride, attired in her mother's wedding dress of deep ivory grosgrain, trimmed with collar and cuffs of point lace, the lace being an heirloom in the Gowran family. The cuffs were fastened with a row of pearls and the gown was draped on one side and fastened with pearls. Her tulle veil was of Egyptian fashion, and although it was long, did not have a train. It was arranged with a crown of point lace, under which were two bands of pearls, and was fastened on each side with medallions of pearls and strings of pearls extending from the medallions almost to the shoulders. The bride carried a huge bouquet of cream roses and heliotrope. Her sister, the maid of honor, wore a simple sleeveless gown of yellow and pink changeable taffeta, in a basque fashion with a scalloped skirt, and carried a colonial bouquet of lavender sweet peas and Ward roses. The two bridesmaids wore dresses fashioned the same as that worn by the bridesmaid, but made of lavender taffeta and carried Ward roses and purple sweet peas, in a pleasing and effective color contrast to the attire of the maid of honor. An orchestra of three pieces, part of the Gloe Naidl orchestra, played the wedding march from Lohengrin while the bridegoorm, the best man and the other attendants, and the two ministers, took their places in front of the big fire- place, where the ceremony took place. Vested Choir Sings The orchestra again played the same march, this time to the accompaniment of the girls' vested choir of Grace Congregational church, who sang as they slowly came down the stairs, preceding the bride and her attendants. The words accompanying the music from Lohengrin which were sung by the girls' choir, had been written by the late Mrs. Charles Jaeger, aunt of the bride and sister of Mrs. Gowran. It was an impressive and beautiful sight as the ten girls of the choir, in their purple robes, made their way slowly down the stairs, singing as they went, followed by the two bridesmaids, the maid of honor, and then the bride on the arm of her father. They passed through an aisle of white satin ribbons extending from the stairway to the fireplace, the aisle having been made by the ushers. The fireplace was banked in ferns and other greens, and on each end of it was a large basket of lilacs and yellow irises. It was in front of this improvised bower that the ceremony was performed, the bride being given in marriage by her father. It was witnessed by a gathering of 150 persons. After the conclusion of the wedding service, the choir, accompanied by the orchestra, sang Mendelssohn's wedding march. An informal reception followed. Color effects of lavender and yellow were carried out in the decorations throughout, and in the dining room there was an artistic arrangement of lavender sweet peas and Ward roses. Supper of 150 covers(?) was served. Take Two Weeks Honeymoon Tour It was in the midst of the festivities that Mr. and Mrs. Evans slipped away in their automobile for a two weeks tour of the north. They will make their home, upon their return at 1615 Twenty-fifth street, Two Rivers. Mr. Evans who is a son of the Rev. and Mrs. Robert Evans of Pasadena, is now located at Two Rivers and has accepted a position with the Hamilton Manufacturing company in that city of which Mr. Gowran is the vice president. Mr. Evans is a graduate of Wheaton college, Wheaton, Ill. The bride is one of the most popular members of the younger set and has always made her home at Two Rivers. Possessed of a pleasing personality and a charming manner, her friends are pleased to learn that she will continue to make her home at Two Rivers. She is prominent among the younger people of the Lakeside Country cub and has taken part in many of the amateur musical theatricals at Two Rivers, and was the organizer of the girls vested choir of Grace church. A graduate of Two Rivers high school, Mrs. Evans later attended Milwaukee Downer college, completing her education in the east, first at the Sargeant school and then at Radcliffe college, both at Cambridge, Mass. The writeup then goes on to list out of town guests, many were college friends of the bride and groom. Manitowoc Herald News, June 21, 1923 p.12

GEORGE FEISTEL (b. 1888 d.1919) Notes from Two Rivers: The fourth drowning of the summer occurred in this city last Sunday morning when George Feistel lost his life in West Twin River. Mr. Feistel left his home on the South side last Saturday afternoon to go up the river to a camp known as Happy Home where he intended to remain until Sunday night with a party of friends. The accident happened at about 11:15 Sunday morning when Mr. Feistel was alone in a small boat. He had gone to look after some hooks he had set and it is thought that he was overcome by heat and collapsed while in a standing position, as his face was bruised when it struck the boat. The place where he fell in the water was only about four feet deep. The Coast Guard was immediately notified by his companions and the body was recovered by the Coast Guard crew at 3 o'clock in the afternoon a short distance from where he fell in. He was 30 years of age and is a son of Mrs. George Feistel of this city. He is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Ida Hoyer of Manitowoc. Boy Fatally Hurt Under Auto Truck Four drownings in three weeks is a ghastly record for Two Rivers. July 5th Adolph Krey, aged 12 was drowned at the railroad bridge. Then last week came the death of little Myra and Adrea Kaiser in the lake. And now another victim has been added. The last fatality on the water here took place Sunday morning about a mile up the Neshota River. The victim was George H. Feistel, son of the late Geo. Feistel Sr., and employed as a machinist at Aluminum Goods Plant No. 4. With friends he was camping for the day at their camp, "Happy Home". After fishing for awhile with others from a boat he rowed ashore and then rowed back to the spot alone. In a few minutes he was seen to lean over and fell into the water. He never came up to the surface and as there is only 4 feet of water where he fell in, it is supposed that he was overcome by the heat and unconscious when he struck the water or he could have saved himself. His friends were unable to recover the body and the Coast Guard was called and the body taken out of the water a little over 2 hours after the accident. Deceased leaves his wife, his mother, his sisters, Mrs. Elsa Brathby, Misses Linda, Mabel, Lillian, Alice and Lunette and brothers, Fred, Louis and Norman. WILLIAM FETKENHIRE (a.k.a. FETKENHEUER) This is a bio. sketch from "History of Manitowoc County Wisconsin" by Dr. L. Falge, 1911-1912, v.2, p.612-615. Among the prominent druggists of Two Rivers is William Fetkenheuer, who has been conducting the Park Drug Store at 1420 Eighteenth street since March, 1910. He was born in Germany, January 10, 1879, and is a son of August and Louise (Fick) Fetkenheuer. The parents came from Germany to America in 1884, and the father is at present an agriculturist residing about five miles southwest of Tomah. William Fetkenheuer was enrolled as a pupil of the public schools of Tomah, Wisconsin, where he successfully passed through the several grades and subsequently entered the high school. He laid aside his text books at the age of seventeen years and at once started to prepare himself for a professional career. He served for four years and a half as an apprentice in a drug store in his native town after which he was given charge of the drug department of the Tomah Hospital for two years. About that time the Spanish-American war broke out and he volunteered for service as steward in the hospital corps. After he returned from that service he took a short course in pharmacy at Milwaukee and subsequently went to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he was employed by the E. K. Godding Drug Company. He remained in their employ for about a year after which he was given the position of manager in the drug store of Dr. E. A. Hougen. Two years later he came to Two Rivers, and has since been connected with the drug stores of this city, first being employed by C. F. Kirst as pharmacist for four years and subsequently establishing himself in an independent drug store which he has successfully conducted since 1910. He is in every sense a thoroughly reliable and practical chemist, and has a reputation of being one of the most accurate and efficient druggists in the city. On the 18th of October, 1906, Mr. Fetkenheuer was married to Miss Myrtle Grover, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Grover, pioneer settlers of Two Rivers. The father held the offices of alderman and county supervisor for many years. To Mr. and Mrs. Fetkenheuer one daughter has been born, Adella Louise, whose birth occurred on the 22d of October, 1909. The family residence is situated at 1418 Eighteenth street. Mr. Fetkenheuer holds membership in the Modern Woodmen of America and the Equitable Fraternal Union.

COL. CASPER FLEISCHER Death of Co. Casper Flesher (sic). Just as we were going to press we were pained to learn of the death of Col. Casper Flescher of Two Rivers, of dropsy, on Tuesday evening last. Although since February last he had been confined to his room, most of the time on a bed of sickness, and we some of us were afraid that it would prove his last, when on Tuesday evening the 18th of June, we heard he had ceased to live, the whole community was cast into gloom. For twenty-one years, nearly a quarter of a century, he had been one of the landmarks of this little hamlet. Of a fine noble presence, with a hand as "open to charity as the day," a spirit of enterprise that has left behind him many monuments in the adornment and substantial improvement of the place, a genial sociability that made friends of all, no one could have been called who would be more sadly missed or sincerely mourned. Even his faults - who has them not? - were such as sometimes grow out of true nobility of character and a purely unselfish nature.
