M-11 ********* Calvin Earley Victim; Two Others Hurt Vehicle Misses Curve, Snaps Two Poles, Rams Tree MISHICOT-A deer hunting trip to northern Wisconsin ended in tragedy early Friday for three young men from Two Rivers whose car failed to negotiate a curve two miles west of this village on Highway 147. Calvin J. Earley, 24, of 2614-14th St., was killed instantly in the crash and two companions were injured, one critically. Hospitalized at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital were Richard A. Meineke, 26, 2310 Washington St., the driver, and Sheldon Domnitz, 24, of 1714-21st St., Two Rivers. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said Meineke was in critical condition with head and chest injuries and a severe jaw injury. Domnitz was believed to be less seriously hurt. Numerous Injuries Earley suffered numerous severe injuries including a skull fracture, crushed chest and broken arms and legs. A passerby, Richard Hess, 20, of Rt. 1, Mishicot, tried unsuccessfully to revive Earley at the scene with mouth to mouth resuscitation. (snip-traffic stats) The accident was investigated by County Police Officers Tony Kubis and Leo Naidl, who said the three men were returning to Two Rivers from a hunting trip in the Eagle River area. They had left that city about 5 p.m. Thursday. Police were notified of the accident at 12:06 a.m. Friday. Wrapped Around Tree The officers reported that the car was traveling east on 147 at a high rate of speed when it failed to make the curve. It struck and broke two telephone poles before slamming head-on into a large tree which measured about 20 inches in diameter. The car reportedly traveled 383 feet off the roadway before it hit the tree. The 1960 model vehicle literally was wrapped around the tree. The pedal from the clutch or brake was found in the center of the front seat where the three men had been sitting. The steering wheel and dashboard were crushed up against the roof of the vehicle, according to Officer Kubis. Meineke stayed in the wrecked vehicle. The other two were found lying just out the right front door. Several rifles owned by the men were smashed or damaged by the terrific impact. Manitowoc Herald Times, Thursday, October 3, 1968 P. 20 ******** (02 Jul 1898/Oct 1968/SSDI) ******** DIVES OFF BRIDGE AND SAVES LIFE Diving off a bridge into the cold water takes real “nerve” and when the act results in saving a human life it is worthy of special recognition and reward. Arthur Mermuys performed this act Sunday last when he saved the life of Felix Zur, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Zur. The lad was fishing and fell off the roof of one of the boat houses near the railroad bridge. The cries of the boy's mother, who was near attracted the attention of Mermuys who was crossing the bridge and he noticed the little fellow in the water. Hastily removing his coat and not taking the extra time it would require to run back and along the bank, Mr. Mermuys dove off the bridge and rescued the lad who was about to go down for the third time. Frank Herbst, who was near by lifted the boy from Mermuys' arms. The water where the Zur lad was rescued is of considerable depth. There is no doubt that had Mermuys not come along at the time and leaped to the rescue, the child would have been drowned. Although Mr. Mermuys is a good swimmer, the act required considerable nerve as the water was quite cold and there was danger of cramp. The lad who was rescued had considerable water in his lungs and was unconscious but a physician was called and he was soon normal. The Coast Guard crew had been summoned and Capt. Stahl arrived after the rescue. The Reporter, Fri., May 12, 1922

BERT MERRILL BERT MERRILL SENDS HELP TO THEIR HOMES Pillows Head Under Exhaust of Car in Neshotah Park - Was Third Attempt Bert O. Merrill, 63, Twelfth St., Two Rivers, an automobile salesman adopted a unique method in the lonely recesses of Neshotah Park, Two Rivers, to end his life last night. Running his car into a clump of bushes off the road through the park, Merrill removed a seat cushion of the car, pillowed his head directly beneath the exhaust pipe of the car and lay down on the ground to await death. His body was found by Arthur Johnson, his employer, this morning, when Merrill's daughter appealed to him to locate her father, who had not returned home last night. The suicide of Merrill was the third attempt made by the Two Rivers' man to end his life. His other two attempts had been frustrated by relatives. When the body of the dead man was found this morning, the engine of the car was still running and his face and the shoulders of his overcoat were coated with frost deposited by the warm vapors of the exhaust. Coroner W.G. Kemper, who was summoned from this city after the discovery of the body announced that the case was one of suicide and that there would be no inquest. The body was later removed to the Beduhn and Goetz Funeral Home at Two Rivers. It was announced that funeral plans had not been made. Mr. Merrill was last seen alive at ten o'clock last night. At that time he had informed two men who were trying to help him extricate his car which had gone over an embankment in Neshotah Park that he would wait until morning to get his car back on the road. He told them that he would stay with the car overnight and they left. From the position of the body right underneath the exhaust pipe it was evident that he had lain down in a position so that the exhaust fumes from the idling motor of the car would strike him full in the face. The suicide verdict was also strengthened by the fact about 18 months ago, Mr. Merrill closed himself in his garage with the engine running and was found unconscious just in the nick of time by his family. The same night he laid down in the basement with gas jets in a laundry stove turned on but was again rescued in time, while police remained overnight to guard against further suicide efforts. Recently he had been in better spirits however. The discovery of the body was made by Arthur Johnson, his employer at 8:25 o'clock this morning, following information from Mr. Merrill's daughter that her father did not return home last night. Mr. Johnson immediately instituted a search and finally observed the machine off the roadway in Neshotah Park. It developed that Mr. Merrill who had returned from Milwaukee at six o'clock last night with a new Chrysler sedan had informed Mr. Johnson that he had a prospect on Jackson Street and wanted to demonstrate the machine. The unknown prospect was not with Mr. Merrill when he called at the home of Herman Karnitz Sr. at 8:45 o'clock last night to inquire for Karnitz's son, Herman, an employee of the Johnson garage to help him push the car into the road. August Messmann, a neighbor, came to Mr. Merrill's assistance and succeeded in pushing the machine into a position so that it could be backed into the road. But the machine later coasted down a slight incline and jammed among the trees. Being of no more assistance, Mr. Karnitz told Mr. Merrill that he could call a wrecker from the garage but the latter opposed the gesture, declaring that everything would be all right in the morning. "Mr. Merrill was in unusually high spirits last night when he returned from Milwaukee with the new car," said Mr. Johnson. "He was determined to leave for the East Side where he said he had a prospect on Jackson Street and was perfectly sober." Just how Mr. Merrill drove his machine off the driveway into a small patch could not be determined. The sedan was several hundred feet off the roadway when he came to the Karnitz home nearby and asked for assistance. About 8:30 o'clock this morning, Dr. A.P. Zlatnik was called and after a brief examination, pronounced the man dead. About the time, the Two Rivers physician was summoned, Officer Fay Thorne put in a call to Coroner W.G. Kemper here. The car was only slightly scratched about the right fender. Mr. Merrill is survived by his widow, two sons and three daughters.
