HARRY R. CHASE Coal Passer Killed by Car Harry Chase, 65, Crossing Road Is Hit By Auto Accident Occurs on Memorial Drive at 9 O'Clock Friday Night Harry R. Chase, (photo) 65-year-old coal passer on carferries of the Ann Arbor line out of here, was killed instantly shortly after 9 o'clock Friday night as he was struck by a car while walking across Memorial drive midway between Manitowoc and Two Rivers, a short distance from his home. The death is the 15th traffic fatality of the year in Manitowoc county. According to information gathered by Coroner Theodore Teitgen and traffic officers William Ladwig and John Meneau, Chase was crossing to the lake side of the busy highway where he intended to look at the water for a few moments before recrossing to the inner lane to board the Manitowoc-bound bus which would bring him to work on the carferry here. Driver Not Held A car driven by Paul C. Tadych, 33, of 1020 Washington street, this city, bound from Two Rivers to Manitowoc, struck Chase near the center of the three-lane highway. Tadych told the coroner that Chase walked out onto the inner lane in front of his car, and although he swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid hitting the man, he was unable to do so. Tadych was not held. Dr. Teitgen said an inquest will be held. Funeral services for Mr. Chase will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Pfeffer funeral home. CLYDE E. CHIZEK Clyde Chizek, Prominent Athlete, Dies Here FOUND DEAD IN BED; IS VICTIM HEART ATTACK Youthful Swimmer Had Been Recovering From Long Illness At Home Clyde Chizek, 23, one of the leading young swimmers in the state, was found dead in bed at his home at 1314 21st street, Sunday morning, after an apparent comeback from a period of ill health. Death was due to a heart attack. The young athlete, whose achievements at Washington high school made history in Wisconsin, and whose fame broadened into the Big Ten Conference when a student at the University of Wisconsin, had a career before him which was expected to carry him to national fame. Young Chizek was well on the road to recovery after suffering from an abcess in the head and later from a long seige of inflammatory rheumatism, that brought down his weight from 170 to 100 pounds. He regained most of his weight in the last three months. A happy Christmas after many months of convalescing was looked forward to by the youth, and his grieving parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Chizek. It is believed that the excitement probably taxed his heart. He was found dead in bed shortly before 6 o'clock in the morning, having passed away probably an hour before. Funeral Thursday Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the funeral home of Klein and Stangel, with the Rev. Thomas A. Hawkes officiating. Burial will be in Forest View cemetery. The remains can be viewed at the funeral home until the time of the funeral. Clyde Chizek was born in this city May 5, 1910 and made his home here all his life, with the exception of two years at Madison where he attended the university. He graduated from Washington high school in 1928 and in September of that year entered the University of Wisconsin. A powerful youth, young Chizek rapidly gained attention in his freshman year at the high school in swimming and in his sophomore year led the swimming team to state-wide note in interscholastic meets. His most outstanding events were the 40 and 100 yard free style, setting two state records for high school swimmers. His 40-yard free style record still stands. Good Prospect Entering the University of Wisconsin, Chizek appeared like Big Ten timber in his first year. He was considered by Coach Joe Steinauer as one of the greatest conference prospects in the history of the school. In his sophomore year he became a regular member of the university swimming team, and distinguished himself in a quadrangular Big Ten meet at Chicago two years ago, setting a recod in the 40-yard free style. Leaving the university for a year in which to earn sufficient money to return the following year, the youth pursued his swimming career and became a member of the Milwaukee Athletic Club swimming team, taking part in a number of big meets. He was given a life membership card to the Milwauke Athletic club. Well liked by all who knew him, young Chizek was one of the most popular young men of the city. He possessed exemplary habits. In apparently good health, he planned to drive to New London Christmas morning with his fiancee, Miss Anna Fritz to spend the holidays with the latter's parents. Plans had already been made for the trip and the youth's parents were to accompany him. Manitowoc Herald Times, Tuesday, December 26, 1933 P.10

And only I can determine what kind of day it will be. It can be busy and sunny, laughing and gay, Or boring and cold, unhappy and grey. My own state of mind is the determining key, For I am only the person I let myself be. I can be thoughtful and do all I can to help, Or be selfish and think just of myself. I can enjoy what I do and make it seem fun, Or gripe and complain and make it hard on someone. I can be patient with those who may not understand, Or be little and hurt them as much as I can. But I have faith in myself, And believe what I say, And I personally intend to make the best of each day. Herald Times Reporter, January 7, 1997 P. A2

ROLAND C. DEWEY (This was sent in by his daughter)

He was resident of Lakeview Health Center in West Salem, Wisconsin and died there. No one was notified that he died! His brother received something from a company to preserve his obituary write up and that was the "first" anyone knew that he died! The whole funeral, burial and all had been done in West Salem. My father had a plot already in Two Rivers and my Aunt and Uncle (his brother and sister-in-law) wanted him in Two Rivers with the family....so, they had investigated how they could go about having him transferred. That is the reason for the October date there in Two Rivers, where they later held a church service at St. Marks for him. My mother and father had been divorced for many years. ******** Memorial Obituary Entered Into Eternal Rest April 13, 1990 Roland C. Dewey Roland C.
