MANDLE, JOSEPH Joseph Mandle, 19 and Arthur Niesel, 22, were returning after a visit to Kellnersville. About 1 am Monday, they approached Highway 141 going east on County Trunk H. Their car left the highway at the intersection and hit a telephone pole. Mandel was instantly killed and Niesel says he was asleep and does not know how it happened. Mandel was evidently driving too fast to make the right angle turn which is necessary at that conjunction. Mandel lived at Manitowoc until about eight years ago, moving to Chicago with his parents. He is survived by his mother, a brother and four sisters, all of Chicago. Niesel was not badly hurt. Manitowoc Pilot - Thurs., Sept. 10, 1931

METREN, TOPEL Topel Metren, also known as Metrenwich, a carferry deck hand, aged 37, was killed last week when run over by a Soo Line train of freight cars in switching operations at the left bridge at the ship yards. The switching crew had a man at each end of their train but they did not see the man on the track, they said and learned of something wrong when they felt the train go over an obstruction. They stopped and found that Metren had been instantly killed. His head and an arm had been severed from the body. How he happened to be on the track rests in conjecture. It happened between midnight and one o'clock a.m. Some of the switching crew reasoned from the situation that the man must have been lying on a rail when struck. His home was at Freesoil, Michigan. he was unmarried. The district attorney decided that the known facts justified no inquest being held. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Nov. 22, 1928

NOLLAU, WILHELM Death of Wilhelm Nollau on Wed. morning after a long illness. Mr. Nollau was born 11 Feb. 1826 in Dresden, Saxony and so was 64 1/2 yrs. old. He came to America in 1849, settling in Manitowoc in 1851. In 1854 he married Miss Susette Hacker of Town Newton. From this marriage came 4 daughters and 2 sons of whom 2 daughters are now married. (The article details his business life with various sawmills and a hotel.) The children live in Chicago, and the family has chosen to transport the body there for burial. The widow is now considering relocating there. The cortege will be under the auspices of the Free Masons, of which the deceased was a member, and is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the railroad station. Der Nord Westen, 04 Sept. 1890 ******** WILLIAM NOLLAU, an old settler and well known citizen, died on Tuesday last after a lingering painful illness. Mr. Nollau was born in Dresden, Saxony, on February 11th, 1826. In 1849, he emigrated to America, settling first in Sheboygan county and two years later coming to this city. Here he found employment in the saw mill of ______ ____ soon after became foreman and in 18?? owned and operated a saw mill of his own, located on the present site of Vogt?s furniture store. It was in this mill that the wonderful explosion occurred of which old settlers often speak, when the boiler of the mill was blown from its location near the river to a point West of the building now occupied by Carl Luepke. The mill was afterwards destroyed by fire, and Mr. Nollau then purchased the Franklin House which he conducted until a short time before his death. The deceased was a quiet, unobtrusive man, following the even tenor of his way. He leaves a widow, four daughters and three sons to mourn his loss. All the children reside in Chicago, where his remains will be sent tomorrow morning under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, of which he was an old member. REED, MRS. JUDGE (JULIET) Steinthal news: Mr. and Mrs. Webster of Menasha arrival here Monday, called here by the severe illness of Mrs. Judge Reed. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, March 16, 1886 P.3 ******* Steinthal news: Mrs. Judge Reed who for several days has been very ill and her life despaired of is this morning considered slightly better though not yet out of danger. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, March 16, 1886 P.3 ******** MRS. GEORGE REED died yesterday afternoon after a brief illness. She was surrounded by all her children who came in response to telegrams announcing their mother's serious illness. Mrs. Reed was born in North Granville, N.Y., January 15, 1816. She was married there to Hon. George Reed in 1836 and came directly west settling in Milwaukee. The family came to Manitowoc in 1850 and Mrs. Reed has lived here since except when she made occasional extended visits to relatives residing elsewhere. Four years ago she received a terrible shock in the death of her husband by the Newhall House fire in Milwaukee. She was a woman of considerable energy and she bore her loss with becoming fortitude. She had great intellectual activity which age did not seem to impair. Her remains will be carried to North Granville, the place of her birth, where they will be interred. Manitowoc Pilot, March 18, 1886 P. 3 ******** DIED? March 17, 1886, in this city, at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. H. G. Kress, Mrs. Juliet S. Reed, relict of Hon. Geo Reed. Mrs. Reed was born in North Granville N.Y., January 15, 1816. She removed thence to Milwaukee in 1836 immediately after her marriage and in 1850 came to Manitowoc. It would be difficult to give a just estimate of Mrs. Reed?s character and accomplishments, which would not read like flattery to strangers while to those who knew her the attempt would seem far short of the truth. She had received a fine education in youth and no one ever could meet her without acknowledging her rare intelligence, her social attractiveness, her refined and cultivated manner which made her a marked woman in any assemblage. At the loss of her husband in the terrible Newhall house fire, her many friends feared she would be crushed. But she became the comforter of her children in the awful calamity. She was one of the founders of the Presbyterian church in this city and was a devoted member of that society until her death. She leaves four children, Mrs. Harris of New York, Mrs. Webster of Menasha, Geo. Reed of Bismark, D. T. and Mrs. Kress of this city. All were here at her death except Mrs. Harris who was prevented by illness from coming. Her funeral service at the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon were attended by a large number of friends. The remains were taken to North Granville, N.Y. for interment. She attended parochial schools in Fredonia, Silver Lake and Racine, and graduated from the Racine academy. She taught parochial school at Elgin, Illinois for many years. UNKNOWN BURIALS Two bodies were taken from the cemetery at this place, last week, for the purposes of re-interring them in Milwaukee. One of the bodies had been buried for upwards of nineteen years, and the other for about fifteen years. In taking the remains of the one which had lain the longest from the grave, the coffin, which was very rotten, burst, and it was found, singularly enough, that while the lower portion of the body had entirely perished, the upper portion was in a remarkable state of preservation.
