LOUISE V. ARCHAMBAULT cemetery #44 Mrs. Louise Archambault, 83, of 3605 custer St., Manitowoc, died Saturday at home. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pfeffer funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Thaddeus J. Koszarek will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mrs. Archambault was born June 4, 1888, at Duluth, Minn., daughter of the late Elmira and Cyfrene Archambault. She was married to Joseph R. Archambault in 1909. Her husband preceded her in death Nov. 30, 1947. Survivors include two sons, Richard and Guy of Manitowoc, four daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Bernice) Hammersley of Texas, Mrs. Kenneth (Elaine) Meissner and Mrs. William (June) Reilly of Manitowoc and Mrs. Frank (Shirley) Perry of Massachusetts, 30 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. John Hephner will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Thomas was born Dec. 4, 1958, at Manitowoc son of Jospeh Archambault and the late June Heideman. He would have been an eighth grade student at Washington Junior High School. He had been active in the city recreation sports program. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) MELVIN F. ARENDS cemetery #13 Melvin Arends, 20, of Hika, passed away Saturday afternoon at St. Nicholas hospital after a lingering illness. He was born on April 30, 1922, in the town of Centerville the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Arends. After completing his education, he enlisted in the army in August, 1940. He was attached to the 32nd Division and served overseas in the Aleutians. He was hospitalized and received a medical discharge in October, 1943. On October 14, 1944, he married Miss Mable Junk of Hika, and the couple lived in Hika for three and a half years. He was a member of St. George Catholic church of Hika and of the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors are: his wife; one son, his parents, and two brothers. (Survivors edited for privacy) Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Stoltenberg Funeral chapel, Cleveland, and a requiem high mass will be said at 9:30 at St. Wendel church. The Rev. L. M. Loerke will be the celebrant, and burial will be made in St. George cemetery. The body will lie in state from 7 p.m. Monday until the time of the services. CLEMENS J. ARENZ cemetery #83 Clemens J. Arenz, 54, of 1030 First Street, Kiel, died unexpectedly this morning while at work at Kohler Company where he was employed in the pottery department. Death was attributed to an apparent heart attack. He was born February 18, 1921 in rural Chilton, a son of the late Arthur and Clara Schummer Arenz. He attended parochial school at Jericho and Chilton High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. On May 8, 1946 he married June Bolz at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. The couple lived in Kiel after marriage where he operated the Arenz Block Company for 22 years. After he sold the firm he was employed by Kohler Company. Mr. Arenz also drove school bus in the Kiel School District. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, its Holy Name Society and the Tri-County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Kiel. Survivors are four sons, two sisters, Mrs. Everett Muellenbach and Mrs. Clarence Heimann, both of Kiel; three brothers, Sylvester, Gilbert and Ervin, all of Chilton, and two grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church preceded by family rites at 10:00 a.m. at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel. RAYMOND ARKENS cemetery #38 Raymond (Ray) Arkens, 73, of Rockwood, Rt. 4, Manitowoc, died Thursday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church, Francis Creek. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Arkens was born Aug. 17, 1898, at Lena, Wis., son of the late Theodore and Sarah Pirlet Arkens. He married Claire Daoust Dec. 9, 1919, at Seymour. The couple resided at Green Bay until 1933 when they moved to Klondike where they operated a tavern until 1950. Later they operated Arkens Green Lake Resort at Mountain, Wis., until 1968 when they retired and moved to Rockwood. Mr. Arkens was a carpenter by trade. He served in the Navy in World War I and was a member of the V.F.W. Post at Mountain. He was also a member of the Mountain, Klondike and Francis Creek sportsmans' clubs. Survivors include his wife, a son, M.J. (Bud) Arkens of Francis Creek, two daughters, Mrs. Marty (June) Katzka and Mrs. Kenneth (Janet) Weger of Francis Creek, two sisters, Mrs. Con (Katherine) Gauthier of Oconto Falls and Mrs. Daniel (Helen) Mathys of Rt. 1, Green Bay, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grand- children. Four brothers, two sisters and a grandchild preceded him in death. SR. LEAH MARIE ARMBRUST cemetery #46 Sister M. Leah Marie Armbrust, 64, of Holy Family Convent, Rt. 5, Manitowoc, died Thursday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. The Rev. Julian Resch will officiate and burial will be in the convent cemetery. Sister Marie, nee Margaret L. Armbrust, was born Jan. 4, 1908, at Zanesville, Ohio, daughter of the late Henry and Ella Roll Armbrust. She entered the Order of Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Aug. 16, 1926, and professed vows Aug. 15, 1929. She taught at Oconto Falls, Waukesha and Appleton. She also taught in Illinois, Ohio and Michigan. She served as secretary-general in the Order since 1969. Survivors include a sister, Miss Mary Ellen Armbrust, of Zanesville. Matilda (Tillie) G. Armbruster, age 88, a resident of Garfield Gardens, Manitowoc, died Tuesday morning, December 12, 2000, at her residence. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2000, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Roman Zbieranski O.F.M., with entombment to follow at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc. She was born November 4, 1912, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Wencel and Mary Nitka Ziarnik. She was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, class of 1930. Tillie was employed as a secretary for Holmes Oil Co. retiring in 1992 at the age of 80. Tillie was also the manager of Garfield Gardens from 1979 to present. She volunteered for many organiza- tions which include the following, Manitowoc County Sheriff's Care Call, Manitowoc Visitor's Information Center, Manitowoc-Two Rivers Chamber of Commerce, the Capitol Civic Center and also volunteered as a greeter for the Badger Car Ferry. Survivors include a son; a sister-in-law; a nephew; two nieces, along with other nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Michael and Chester Ziarnik, and a daughter- in-law, Gail Armbruster. The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc, from 9 a.m. Saturday, until the time of service at 11 a.m. There will be no Friday evening visitation. ELSIE ARNDT cemetery #82 Mrs. Elsie Arndt, 59, died late Thursday night at her home, 843 7th St., Kiel, after being in ill health for the past year. Born Jan. 10, 1897, in Kiel, a daughter of the late Jacob and Mary Diefenthaler Jugenheimer, she attended public schools in Kiel. Her marriage to Fred Arndt of Elkhart Lake took place Nov. 5, 1921. The couple spent their entire married life in Kiel. Mr. Arndt died in August, 1936. Survivors are three sons, four sisters, Mrs. George Spor, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Lorraine Schreiber, Mrs. Arno Hagenow and Miss Meta Jugenheimer, Kiel, and two brothers, Oscar, of Elkhart Lake, and Harvey, of Fontana, Calif. FRED W. ARNDT cemetery #82 Fred Arndt of Kiel Passes Away at Home on Saturday Kiel – Fred Arndt, aged 53, passed away at the family residence, 843 N. Seventh street, Kiel, on Sunday at 12:35 a.m. after a lingering illness. The deceased was born on a farm in the town of Mosel, on August 8, 1883, the son of Henry and Augusta Arndt. He was married to Miss Lillian Stoltzmann of Sheboygan in 1914, and the couple located in Elkhart Lake, where Mr. Arndt conducted a blacksmith shop for many years. His wife passed away in 1918. He was married the second time to Miss Elsie Jugenheimer of Kiel on November 5, 1921, and the couple resided in Elkhart Lake until 1923, when they moved to Kiel at their present home. Mr. Arndt, up until the time of his death, was employed with the Stoelting Brothers Company here. Survivors are his wife; three sons, three sisters, Mrs. Carl Schmidt and Mrs. Joseph Gosse of the town of Mosel, and Mrs. Henry Sebald of the town of Rhine, and one brother, William Arndt, of the town of Mosel. A brother, Herman Arndt, of the town of Mosel preceded him in death. (Survivors edited for privacy) Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at the C. J. JOHN ARNDT cemetery #44 John Arndt, 79, of 1509 New York Ave., died Saturday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Theodore J. Vinger will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Military graveside services will be conducted by the V.F.W. Otto-Oas Post No. 659 of Manitowoc. Mr. Arndt was born Sept. 15, 1891, at Manitowoc, son of the late John and Michalena Brandt Arndt. He married Lillian Hoverson Oct. 19, 1921, at Manitowoc. He had been employed by the Standard Oil Co. for 18 years and later by the Board of Education of Manitowoc as a custodian at Andrew Jackson School, retiring in 1956. He was a veteran of World War I serving as a corporal with Company B of the 47th Infantry. He was wounded in action at Cha Teau Thierre in France. Mr. Arndt was a member of the order of Maccabees and also the V.F.W. Otto-Oas Post No. 659. Survivors include his wife; a son, Paul J., of Manitowoc; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Beduhn, of Morristown, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Anna Rauber, of Manitowoc; four grandchildren and nieces and nephews. LILY (MYERS) ARNEMAN cemetery #33 Lily (Myers) Arneman, 89, of Two Rivers, died early Saturday morning, March 30, 1991, at the Two Rivers Community Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. Rev. Edward Stelter will officiate. Burial to follow at Knollwood Memorial Gardens. The former Lily Myers was born May 16, 1901, in Burrett Township, Ill., daughter of the late John and Caroline Last Myers. She graduated in 1918 from Mishicot High School and also attended the University of Wis.-Milwaukee, graduating with the Class of 1922. On June 27, 1928, she married Elmer Arneman at Two Rivers. He preceded her in death January 14, 1977. The couple farmed in the town of Two Rivers before moving to the city in 1951. Mrs. Arneman was a teacher in the rural schools from 1942-1954 and also a teacher at St. John's Lutheran School from 1954 until her retirement in 1965. She was a member of the St. Johns Ladies Society, the Quilters and the Afternoon Social Group of St. Johns. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, a special friend, 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends also survive. Beside her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mae in 1978, and by a brother, Alvin. AUGUST ARNEMANN cemetery #89A From Der Nord Westen, 04 Aug. 1904: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 01 Aug.) August Arnemann, one of the first settlers of Town Two Rivers, turned his farm over to his son several years ago and moved to Two Rivers. Last week he was on the farm helping his son with the hay. He was driving a horse-drawn hayrick and was outside the sight of the others. When they next saw the old gentlemen he had fallen from his seat on the rick and was dead on the ground. The horse remained in position alongside. Medical examination concluded that Mr. Arnemann had suffered a stroke. He was laid to rest Sun. afternoon in a large funeral from the Lutheran Church. (Mr. Arnemann was born 07 July 1832 in Heckenstaedt, Hanover, and came to America in Sep. 1856. He settled on the above-mentioned farm, and in Nov. of that year got married. He leaves his widow, 3 sons and 6 daughters, namely, August, who lives on a farm near Mishicott, Hermann, who now works the old family farm, and Henry the Assistant Principal in the high school in Eau Claire: Mrs. Wiengar, Mrs. Lieder, Mrs. Berg, and Mrs. Schmidt in Chicago, and Mrs. Fischer in Shawano). ******** From Der Nord Westen, 04 Aug. 1904: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 02 Aug.) AUGUST ARNHOLZ cemetery #35 Aug. Arnholz, 87, Pioneer Shoto Stone Cutter Passes Away August Arnholz, 87, pioneer stone cutter, and a resident of Shoto since 1866, passed away this morning at the hospital here, of diseses incident to old age. The deceased was born in Germany in 1842 and came to this country when a young man of 24, settling in the town of Two Rivers. He took up the stone cutting trade which he coninued until he retired. He was married in 1873 to Miss M. Holtger, who survives him with five daughters, Mrs. Charles Hardow, city, Mrs. John Peterek, Rockland, Mrs. Louis Ahrens, city, Mrs. Wm. Mueller, Shoto and Mrs. Jos. Bernard, of Milwaukee. Twenty two grand children and twenty great grand children also survive. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon from the John Peterek home at Rockwood, and at two o'clock from the Lutheran church there, with Rev. Zell officiating. ARNHOLZ DEATH TODAY 80-Year-Old Widow Will Be Buried On Monday Mrs. Mary Arnholz, 80, widow of the late August Arnholz and a life-long resident of the county died this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Peterik, at Rockwood, where she has been making her home for the past few years. The deceased, whose maiden name was Mary Holtger was born at Two Rivers in 1853. When a child her parents moved to Shoto. She was married there in 1873 to August Arnholz and they resided in that vicinity most of their life. Mr. Arnholz died in September, 1929. ANNA ARNOLD cemetery #82 Pioneer Settler Dies Tuesday Mrs. Anna Arnold To Be Laid to Rest in Kiel Cemetery Mrs. Anna Arnold, one of the pioneer settlers of Kiel, died on Tuesday, July 6th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. C. Hurst in Milwaukee. Mrs. Arnold was born in New York City September 13, 1859, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Goettinger. When Mrs. Arnold was three years old her parents settled in Kiel. Mr. Goettinger had the first shoe store in Kiel. In 1886 Anna Goettinger was married to Peter Arnold. Mr. Arnold died in 1920. Until eight years ago she had lived in the Goettinger homestead, one of the first homes in Kiel. Since then she has made her home in Milwaukee with her daughter, Mrs. Hurst. Besides Mrs. Hurst, the surviving children are: Mrs. Ernst (Anita) Veers of New Holstein, and Mrs. Edwin (Hilda) Fluhr, and Waldo R. Arnold of Milwaukee; an only sister, and give grandchildren. Nee Anna Kazmeier, she was born near Kiel and lived in the vicinity many years. She has 10 children surviving her, all widely scattered throughout the United States. They have resided on the Arnold homestead farm in the town of Schleswig since. CHRISTOPH ARNOLD cemetery #84 Christoph Arnold of Town Schleswig Dies on Saturday Kiel - (Special) - Christoph Arnold, 70, passed away at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, at the farm home in the town of Schleswig four miles northeast of here, following an 11-month illness. He was born on the Arnold homestead on Highway 57 southeast of Kiel Nov. 2, 1869, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christoph Arnold, Sr. As a youth, he became an apprentice blacksmith, and learned the trade from William Haack, of Kiel. In 1891 he went to Milwaukee and operated his own shop there until 1933. While there on May 11, 189_, he was married to Katherine Woe_ky, of that city. In 1933 the couple came to make their home on the present 20-acre farm. Survivors are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Al (Viola) Emmer, Milwaukee; two grandchildren; two brothers, Simon, of Milwaukee, and Edwin, near Kiel; three sisters, Mrs. Louis Henschel, of Sturgeon Bay, Mrs. Mathias Nett, of Kiel, and Mrs. Leo Kimmel, of Cleveland. CHRISTOPHER ARNOLD cemetery #84 CALLED BY DEATH Christoph Arnold, one of the old-time resident of the town of Schleswig, passed away on Saturday forenoon at 11 o’clock, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Engel, where he had been making his home the past three years. Mr. Arnold was born in Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, May 1, 1840, and came to America at the age of 76 years with his parents, who settled in the town of Herman, Sheboygan county, on a farm. He was united in marriage in 1866 to Charlotte Stark, the couple later making their home on a farm in the town of Schleswig, where they resided many years. Later they lived on the Plank road east of Kiel. Mrs. Arnold died in 1896. Mr. Arnold always enjoyed good health up to last summer when he began to ail with a complication of diseases, which finally caused his death. He reached the advanced age of 80 years, 5 months and 15 days, and is survived by three sons, three daughters, 10 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Hollensteiner. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, interment being in the Rockville cemetery, Rev. W. Rech officiated. - 1920.
CHRISTOPHER P. ARNOLD cemetery #82 Christoph P. Arnold passed away at his home in this city on Monday evening at 8 o’clock after a lingering illness with Bright’s disease. Decedent was one of Kiel’s well-known and respected citizens and the news of his death was received with sorrow by the people of the community. Mr. Arnold was born December 17, 1864, in the town of Schleswig, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage in 1891 to Emma Feile, after which the couple lived on the homestead farm 11 years. Later he entered a copartnership with S. Hollensteiner in the grain business. For the last 20 years he has lived in retirement. He leaves his grief-stricken wife, one sister, Mrs. Robert Pagel of Kiel, two brothers, Jacob Arnold of Menomonee Falls, and Philip Arnold of Kiel, and one step-sister, Mrs. August Wagenknecht of Milwaukee. The funeral services will be held today, Thursday, at 2:00 p.m., from the home, Rev. W. Rech officiating. Interment in the Kiel cemetery. June 29, 1922

Arnold, age 91, a former Kiel resident died Friday evening, Nov. 16, 2001 at the Calumet Homestead in New Holstein where she had been a resident for the past three years. The former Edna Rosenbauer, she was born on Oct. 29, 1910 in the Town of Schleswig the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Uhl Rosenbauer. She attended grade school in Rockville. On June 30, 1938, she married Arthur Arnold in Kiel. He died Feb. 23, 1955. She was a member of St. Peter’s UCC in Kiel and the Women’s Guild. Edna enjoyed gardening and crocheting hangers. Survivors are one son, one daughter, three grandsons, two sisters, Vera Ehrich and Helen (Nick) Spannagle, all of Sheboygan. She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. She attended Woodland Park School, and on March 21, 1911, was married to Mr. Arnold at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in the Town of Schleswig. The couple lived in Schleswig until 1955 when they moved to Kiel. Mr. Arnold died in 1955. She was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel, and its Women's Guild and Frauen Verein. The couple located in Kiel where he operated a tavern for 15 years. He retired in 1963. He also had been employed at Stoelting Bros. Co., Kiel prior to operating the tavern. He was inducted into the Armed Forces on Nov 11, 1918, and was discharged the same day, Armistice Day. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Parish and its Holy Name Society, Manitowoc Tribe 49 of Improved Order of Redmen and the 24-hour club of the lodge. Survivors include his widow; four sisters, Mrs. Hilda Lilge of New Holstein, Mrs. Viola Drott of Sheboygan, Mrs. Lydia Klauck of East St. Louis, Ill. and Mrs. Henry Schulz of Milwaukee. Three brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, and at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, the Rev. PETER ARNOLD cemetery #82 PETER ARNOLD DIES SUDDENlY Well Known Former Business Man Victim of Heart Failure. Our community was shocked on Wednesday morning when it was learned that Peter Arnold, one of Kiel’s well known citizens and former business man, had suddenly passed away Tuesday night at his home. Death was due to heart failure. Mr. Arnold had been a sufferer with an affection on his right ??? for a number of years, which steadily grew worse until an amputation had to be peformed in August 1919, to save his life. He was therefore forced to retire from his business as harness-maker, which he has successfully conducted for many years. Mr. Arnold was born in the town of Schleswig, August 22, 1860; after leaving school he learned the harnessmaker’s trade, and established himself in business in Kiel in 1884. On March 9, 1886, he was married to Anna Goettinger of New York City. This union was blessed with seven children, of whom three have died. He leaves his wife, one son, Waldo R. Arnold of Milwaukee, and three daughters, Mrs. Ernst Veers and Mrs. Edwin Fluhr of New Holstein, and Miss Lillian Arnold at home; also four grandchildren. He was born on December 12, 1862, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Philip Arnold, Sr. On September 10, 1889 he was married to Miss Emma Voland of the town of Schleswig. The couple operated a farm in the town of Schleswig before moving to their present home 30 years ago. Mr. Arnold also followed the carpenter trade and served for many years as the sexton of the Rockville cemetery. He is survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. Frank (Willetta) Sternbeck of New Holstein, and Oscar Arnold of this city. Five granchildren also survive. The remains lay in state at the family residence on Saturday night and at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home on Sunday. Funeral services were held at the funeral home at 2 o'clock Sunday, with the Rev. R.E. ROBERT ARNOLD cemetery #82 CALLED TO DEATH Death claimed Robert Arnold of this city on Thursday of last week, after a brief illness with pneumonia. Deceased, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred. Arnold, was born in the town of Schleswig, March 10, 1893, where he grew to manhood. In 1917 he joined the army, and after a stay at Camp Custer left with the expeditionary forces in February, 1918, for France, where he served in the infantry as truck driver. After his honorable discharge in June, 1919, he returned to his parental home, where he has since resided, being employed by Ehnert Bros. He became stricken with pneumonia on January 23, to which he succumbed five days later. Mr. Arnold leaves his bereaved parents, three brothers, Fred., Oscar and Hubert, and four sisters, Mrs. August Lilge of Kiel, Mrs. Geo. Drott of Sheboygan, Lydia and Leona Arnold. He was 32 years, 9 months and 18 days old at the time of his death. Funeral services took place on Monday afternoon from the late home, Kasper Post of the American Legion of Kiel attending in a body. ROSE ARNOLD cemetery #83 Mrs. Rose Arnold, 73, of Kiel, widow of Oscar L., died early today at St. Nicholas Hospital where she had been a patient two weeks. Prior to her hospitalization she had resided at Meadow View Manor, here. The former Rose Brieger, she was born May 25, 1901 in Dasey, ND, daughter of the late Frank and Amelia Hoffman Brieger. The family moved to Kiel in 1912. On May 23, 1923 she was married to Mr. Arnold at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. She and her husband operated a tavern in Kiel. He died on Nov. 21, 1973. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Parish, its Christian Mothers Society and the GUG Germania Society of Kiel. Survivors are three brothers, Edward and William of Kiel and Frank of Milwaukee. A sister preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, with Mass at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Church. The Rev. OLIVER ASLACKSON cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 18 Aug. 1904: A terrible accident occurred yesterday afternoon at the intersection of State and 8th Streets. Elderly Oliver Aslakson was crossing the street but because of his age had lost his hearing and so was unable to discern the approaching streetcar. The motorman was unable to see the old man until it was too late because the car was coming around the corner. Therefore, Aslakson was hit head-on by the fast moving streetcar. Naturally the old man was knocked down and dragged some distance before the car could be stopped. It is reported that his chest was crushed, his head badly injured and both legs broken. Death must have occurred in the blink of an eye. A coroner’s inquest will be held today to determine the degree of the motorman’s responsibility. ********* From Der Nord Westen, 25 Aug. 1904: The coroner’s jury, which was considering last week’s accident in which Oliver Aslaksen lost his life, decided that the streetcar company was not responsible; however, the so-called fenders on the streetcar were not aligned as they should have been.
CHRISTIANE MARTINE ASLAKSON cemetery #2 Mrs. Christina Aslakson, 69, died Saturday at her home in the village of Valders after a few days illness. Her death followed 12 days after that of her husband. Hans C. Aslakson, which occured Sept. 19. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. from the home in Valders and at two o'clock from the Gjerpen Lutheran church, the Rev. E.A. Fretheim officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Mrs. Aslakson, nee Christina Martine Aastad, was born in Stattelle, Bamle, Norway, Jan. 22, 1869 and came to this country with her parents in 1871 as a passenger on the last sailing vessel to leave Norway for America. The family located in this city. In 1895 she was married to Hans Aslakson. They lived on a farm in Cato for 25 years and in 1920 moved to Manitowoc where they lived 12 years. In 1932 they moved to the village of Valders where they since resided. Mrs. Aslakson was a member of the Gjerpen Lutheran church and the Gjerpen Ladies Aid society. Survivors are a daughter, Hazel, Valderes; and a sister, Ingeborg M. Aastad. The body will be moved to the Aslakson home Monday evening from the Berge funeral home. HAZEL A. ASLAKSON Miss Hazel A. Aslakson, age 87, formerly of 710 Pine St., Manitowoc, died Monday, February 6, 1995, at North Ridge Care Center, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 9, 1995, at First Lutheran Church. Revs. Steven D. Olson and Richard E. Lind will officiate with burial at Gjerpen Cemetery, town of Cato. Hazel was born April 15, 1907, in the township of Cato, daughter of the late Hans and Christiana Aastad Aslakson. She attended rural elementary school in the Gjerpen area of Manitowoc County. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1924 with the first class to graduate from the new Lincoln High. She attended the Manitowoc County Normal for one year after which she taught for two years in a rural school south of Valders. She attended St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., and graduated in 1931. She did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Following graduation she taught for five years at the Reedsville High School, five years at Fort Atkinson Senior High School, three years at the Janesville Senior High School. In 1946 she moved back to Manitowoc where she taught English at the Washington Junior High for 26 years. She retired in 1972 after having taught for 41 years. Since her retirement she has done volunteer work as an English language tutor working with our Hmong adults and children. She also taught a weekly Bible class for the residents of Shady Lane Home each Friday for 20 years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she belonged to the First Lutheran Church Women, the OUr Savior Alter Guild, the Wednesday Morning Bible Class, and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the Manitowoc County Retired Teachers, the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Manitowoc Public Library, the Manitowoc County Historical Society, the Viking Rosemalers, the Lauback Outreach Literach Council, and Society of Norway. Survivors include cousins and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until the time of service at the church on Thursday, this being at her requiest. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. ARVID E. ASPLUND cemetery #89A Arvid E. Asplund, age 88, formerly of Two Rivers, died early Thursday morning, May 9, 1996, at Two Rivers Community Hospital. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 1996, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Officiating at the service will be Rev. Edward Stelter. Burial will follow at Pioneers Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers. Arvid was born March 14, 1908, in Iron Mountain, Mich., son of the late immigrant parents, Johan Edvard Andersson Asplund and Maria Abrahamsdotter Herrgard, Kvevlox, Finland. As a young man, Arvid worked in Upper Michigan lumber camps, later moving to Two Rivers, where he married Leona Kubel on May 6, 1928. She preceded him in death January 2, 1988. Arvid was employed at Hamilton Manufacturing Company, and with his father-in-law, William Kubel, designed and built several intricate pearl and wood inlay tables recognized by Robert Ripley in "Believe It Or Not". Prior to retirement from Westphal's Department Store, Manitowoc, Arvid worked for area industries and was an insurance representative. He held memberships in nature clubs, the Whitecap Writers Club, and had been a past officer of Manitowoc and Two Rivers AARP Chapters. He also had served on the church council and Sunday School of St. John Congregation. Arvid maintained a life-long interest in music and literature. He wrote musical compositions, narratives, and poetry. In 1986, his autobiography was published in the Library of Congress "Folklife Annual". Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, one son and daughter-in- law, a daughter-in-law, one brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Marigold Asplund, Cunard, Mich.; one sister and brother-in-law, Alma and Art Larsen, Vulcan, Mich.; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Florence and John Vraney, Manitowoc,; eight grandchildren, several great and great-great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by one son, Maurice; two grandchildren, Tern Roethie and Paul Asplund; one great-grandson, Adam Raether; a sister, Ethel Marlett; a brother, Albert; and step-brother, Andrew Mattson. Mr. Assman was born March 17, 1875 on the homestead on Route 3, north-east of Mishicot. His entire life was spent on the farm there. Assman Becomes 16th County Fatality Mishap Occurs Two Miles North of Two Rivers Two Rivers---Death struck on a Manitowoc County roadway. Wednesday after a lapse of nearly one month. Latest traffic victim was Ira F. Assman 54, of Rt 1 Mishicot, who was killed a two car crash two miles north of this city at the junction of Highway 42 and a town road. His death was the first resulting from a traffic mishap since Aug. 30. Assman died in a collision shortly after 5:30 p.m. with a station wagon. Assman was proceeding west across 42 when his car was struck in the right side by the southbound vehicle. The two vehicles came to rest in an upright position in the ditch in the southwest corner. Assman was found lying just outside of the door of his wrecked 1959 model Chevrolet car. Engaged in Farming. The sun was low in the western sky, police said and it may have temprarily affected Assman's visibility. The deceased was born in the Town of Athen, Marathon County, March 17, 1913 a son of the late William and Mrs Anna Bearna Assman. When he was a child his family brought him to a farm on Rt. 1 Mishicot. Single, he attended the Saxonburg district school in the Town of Mishicot. He was engaged in farming. Surviving are his mother, on the home farm; a sister of Two Rivers, and two brothers. ALFRED E. ASSMANN cemetery #32 Alfred E. Assmann, age 83 of 14611 Saxonburg Road, town of Mishicot, was called to his eternal home on Monday, May 1, 2006, at the Northridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc, where he has been a resident for the past month after a two-year courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mishicot, with the Rev. Robert Johannes officiating with entombment to follow in the Knollwood Mausoleum, Highway 310 in Manitowoc. Alfred was born July 28, 1922, in the town of Mishicot to the late Ira and Mary Gesser Assmann, and has been a lifelong area resident. He was baptized into the Christian faith at home on Nov. 2, 1923, and made his promises to his Lord in the rite of confirmation at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church on Dec. 22, 1935 by the late Rev. Edward Zell. He graduated from the eighth grade at Pleasant View Elementary School in the Town of Mishicot on June 6, 1936, and from Mishicot High School on May 24, 1940, where he enjoyed being a four-year member of the high school band. After graduation, he farmed on the homestead farm with his brother, and also was assisted by his late brother, Florian, during the busy season. He farmed his entire working life, and also worked at Hamilton Manufacturing Co. in Two Rivers for a number of years. He enjoyed playing the card game of sheepshead. He is survived by his brother, who resides on the farmstead home; one sister-in-law; one brother-in-law of Manitowoc; his nephews and nieces. He is further survived by his great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother; Florian Assmann; and two sisters; Alice Assmann and Adeline Kobes. Relatives and friends may call after 9 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mishicot, until the time of service at 11 a.m. There will be no Tuesday evening visitation. Assman, 67, of Route 1, Mishicot, as the result of a heart attack. He had not previously been ill. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Specht funeral home, and at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic church, with the Rev. George Beth officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery at Mishicot. The body will lie in state at the Specht funeral home at Mishicot, and may be viewed there today. The rosary will be recited there Friday evening at eight o'clock. Mr. Assman was born December 15, 1881 in the town of Mishicot, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Assman. He spent his early life in the town of Mishicot until his marriage November 5, 1907 to the former Anna Berman of Athens, Wis., where the couple continued to reside for a short while. They returned to Mishicot 33 years ago where they operated a farm. Surviving are the widow, three sons, Benjamin and Alvin on the home farm, and Ira F., of the town of Mishicot; one daughter, Mrs. William Stone, of Two Rivers, and one brother, Ira Assman, of route 1 Mishicot. RAYMOND ATTRIDGE cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 10 Jan. 1907: Ray Attridge, who came from Clarks Mills in our county but had for years been working at the Northwestern Station in Milwaukee, came to a terrible death Saturday evening on his way to supper at his boarding house. He was crossing the Northwestern tracks on Reed Street and was struck by a passenger engine and thrown into the freight engine standing on the other track breaking almost every bone in his body. He died instantly. The deceased was 23 and his parents still live in Clarks Mills. The body was sent there for burial. [Note: He was buried in Evergreen 3/9/1907. His burial is drawn smaller than normal, which is often an indication that it was a reburial.]
CAROLINE AUDE cemetery #44 Mrs. Caroline Aude, widow of the late Joseph Aude, who died many years ago, passed away last night, at the home of her niece, Mrs. Christ Hendries, with whom she has made her home for a number of years. The deceased who was 87 years of age, was born in Germany in 1842 her maiden name being Caroline Brey. She came to this country in 1891, locating in Manitowoc, where she has since made her home. Two brothers, Edward and Carl Brey of this city and a niece, Mrs. Hendries survive. She suffered a stroke which proved fatal. The deceased, who was 78 years of age, having been born Feb. 14, 1853, was a native of this city, her maiden name being Mary Kuhl. She was brought up here and wedded Joseph Auermiller who passed away several years ago. In a fall at the home eight years ago Mrs. Auermiller suffered a broken hip and she has been an invalid since that time. Burial On Wednesday Funeral services will be held at 8:30 Wednesday morning from the home and at nine o'clock from the St. Boniface church, with interment at Calvary cemetery. JOSEPH AUGUSTIN cemetery #38 According to the information I have, Joseph Anthony Augustin was born in Stachesried, Bavaria, Germany on May 29, 1836 (not June, as stated on the stone) and died in Kossuth on August 27, 1915. He married Barbara (nee) Bredl on June 27, 1860 in Francis Creek. Barbara was born in Bohemia, Chezh Republic on May 31, 1835 and died March 17, 1917 in Manitowoc. Joseph emigrated to the United States aboard the "Argo" and entered through the port of Buffalo, New York. He came with his father, Peter Augustin; his mother, Barbara Augustin (nee) Preu and four siblings. Joseph became a US citizen on June 3, 1878. I do not know when Barbara came to the US. PETER AUGUSTIN cemetery #38 From Der Nord Westen, 29 Oct. 1891: A terrible accident occurred Mon. morning in Town Kossuth. Peter Augustin, a son of farmer Joseph Augustin, was busy hauling fertilizer across the fields and for some reason the horses shied and ran away. The young driver was thrown from the wagon and was dragged by the frightened horses. He ended up near the district schoolhouse and when found by the teacher and the children, he was still living but unable to talk. He was carried to the home of his parents where he shortly died from his injuries. He was buried yesterday in the Catholic Cemetery in Francis Creek. The unfortunate man had been born in Town Kossuth and was not quite 22 yrs. old.
PETER AUGUSTIN cemetery #38 From Der Nord Westen, 21 Dec. 1899: Death from old age late Sat. night of Peter Augustin at the home of his son. He was a long-time respected resident of Town Kossuth. He was born in Germany in 1807, came to America in 1854, and settled in Town Kossuth where he has lived ever since. Sat. evening he went quietly to bed and was found dead there next morning. He leaves two sons, his wife having predeceased him in 1890. The funeral was held yesterday in Francis Creek.

JOSEPH AUMANN (d. 1936) cemetery #43 CHARTER BAND MEMBER, DIES Funeral For Joseph Aumann to Be Held Saturday Joseph Aumann, 62, a charter member of the Mantiowoc Marine band, died this noon at the home, 1815 Franklin street. He has been ill for several months. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the St. Boniface church. Mr. Aumann was born in this city in 1874 and always resided here. He came of a musical family. His father, F.X. Aumann, played the bass viol in some of the first orchestras in the county. His nine sons all took up music. Member of Arions When the Arion band was at the height of its popularity more than 40 years ago six of the Aumanns including Joseph, were members. When the Marine band was organized by Director Frank Moser, Joseph Aumann was enrolled as one of the charter members. He continued his membership in the band for many years. In February, 1935, eight Aumann brothers formed a double male quartet which participated in a church show. Conducted Repair Shop In recent years Mr. Aumann conducted a shoe repair shop at his home on Franklin street. MAX AUMANN (d. 1925) cemetery #43 MAX AUMANN REACHES END LIFE'S JOURNEY Maximillan Aumann, pioneer balcksmith of the city and for more than sixty years engaged in that business, reached the end of life's journey Sunday night, when he passed away at his home, 1320 Marshall street, at advanced age of 77. Mr. Aumann had been failing for several months, death being due to infirmities of age. Funeral services will be held from St. Boniface church Wednesday morning. The death of Mr. Aumann occurred on the eve of the fifty-third anniversary of his marriage to Mary Kodet, the event having taken place on May 25, the couple celebrating their golden wedding three years ago. Besides the widow, who is in feeble health as result of injuries she suffered in a fall some months ago, a fractured hip and arm, Mr. Aumann is survived by one daughter, Miss Mayme. A son, Max, died seven years ago. Mr. Aumann was born in Bavaria, June 17, 1848, and at the age of 6 came here with his parents and had always made his home here. He was the first smity in the shops of the Lake Shore & Western when the road was built here and he continued the business as a blacksmith except for a few years in later life when he was employed at the Scating Works, retiring two years ago because of age. Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 9 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Clement P. Kern will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Aumann was born March ??, 1872, son of the late Xavier and Caroline Aumann. He was employed by Pauly Cheese Co. and Kerscher Bros. prior to 1920 and after that time until retirement in 1947 by Mirro Aluminum Co. He married Anna Ganterer Nov. 22, 1897. She died June 10, 1953. He was a ?0-year member of Manitowoc Marine Band, a member of the Mirro Twenty-Five Year Club and Holy Name Society of St. Paul Church Mr. Aumann is survived by two brothers, Walter and Edwin of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. George ?????, of Rhinelander; a granddaugher (Survivor omitted for privacy.) of Manitowoc and two great granddaughters. She had been a resident of Kiel practically all her life, and was one of the first pupils in the Kiel public school. She lived alone in her home just south of the First street bridge here. A brother, Adolph, lives in Cascade, and a sister, Mrs. Andrew Noll, lives in Chilton. The time of death was fixed at Monday night. Complete obituary will be published next week. Funeral services will probably be held on Friday afternoon. 1932 *********** Mrs. Louisa Ruppenthal-Avery Funeral services for Mrs. Louisa Ruppenthal Avery, who passed away at her home on First street Tuesday evening of last week, were held from the Meiselwitz Undertaking parlors Friday afternoon. The last rites were performed by the Rev. J. W. MacElree, with burial in the Kiel cemetery. Pallbearers were August and Fred Ehnert, Philip Arnold, Ed. Baumann, Joseph Stoeger, and Louis Kuhn. The Kiel Frauenverein of which she was a charter member, attended the services in a body. The deceased was born February 3, 1858, in the home in which she died. She was the second of nine children born to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Ruppenthal. Of the entire family only one sister, Mrs. Andrew Noll of Chilton and Adolph Ruppenthal, a brother of Cascade, survive her. She was married in her youth to Mr. Avery. EMIL AWE cemetery #73 Sheboygan Press: "Emil Awe Dies After Operation For Appendicitis" 26 Oct 1931 Emil Awe, 35, passed away at the Holy Family hospital in Manitowoc at 8:50 a.m. Sunday, following an operation for relief from appendicitis. Mr. Awe was born on August 26, 1896 in the town of Newton, Manitowoc county, and was married to Mrs. Elsie Lanbries on July 1, 1924. Besides his wife Mr. Awe is survived by four children. Other survivors are his father, Fred Awe, his brother, William Awe of Town Newton, and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Wirth, Sheboygan, and Miss Ida Awe, Town Newton. One sister, Mrs. Albert Herrmann, preceded him in death nine months ago. The funeral will be held at the home of his father at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and then at the Newton church. ERNST AWE cemetery #73 Sheboygan Press: "Ernst Awe Dies At Newton After Lengthy Illness" 9 Feb 1942 (Monday) Newton, Wis. - (Special) - Ernst Awe, 80, passed away Sunday noon at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Stock. He had been ill about a year and Sunday suffered a heart attack. He was born Feb. 6, 1862, in town Newton, and was married to Sophia Vogt in 1887. She passed away about 18 years ago and a daughter also preceded her in death. Mr. Awe farmed for a number of years after his marriage, and then for 10 years worked at the Aluminum Goods Co. at Manitowoc. For the past 18 years he had made his home with his daughter and son-in-law. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Adolph Stock; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Adolph Stock residence and at 2 p.m. at the Salem Ebenezer Reformed church at Newton. The Rev. K. A. Stuebbe will officiate. HULDA AWE cemetery #73 Mrs. William Awe died suddenly of heart failure at the home, Manitowoc, route 3, late last night, less than a week before her 46th birthday. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. from the home and at two o'clock from the First Reformed church at Newton, the Rev. Robert Klaudt officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body was removed to the home from the Leschke funeral home this afternoon. Mrs. Awe was born Hulda Rambadt in the town of Newton on July 26th, 1891. She was married 22 years ago to Mr. Awe who with four children, two brothers and two sisters, survive. The chidlren are Ruth, Alice, Edmund and Reuben, all at home; brothers are Carl Rambadt of this city and John Rambadt of Sheboygan and sisters are Mrs. John Rooso and Mrs. Henry Waack of Newton. WILLIAM AXEL cemetery #85 Funeral services for William Axel, 82, of 724 Pennsylvania Ave., will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Ballhorn Funeral chapels. The Rev. Kenneth Krueger, pastor of the Fountain Park Evangelical United Bretheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Uecher cemetery near Millhome. Mr. Axel, a bachelor, died early Wednesday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital after a lingering illness. A native of Manitowoc County, he was born June 8, 1873, in the town of Schleswig, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Axel. He was employed on various farms in the area and later operated a threshing machine business. He made his home in Sheboygan since his retirement. Only immediate survivors are two nephews, Arthur, of Sheboygan, and Melvin, of Menomonee Falls, Wis. The body will lie in state at the funeral chapel until the hour of services.
