ELTON CHAUNCEY GIBSON cemetery #44 Elton C. Gibson, One Of First 3 City Mail Carriers, Passes Away VETEREAN OF CITY CARRIER ROUTES DIES Retired From Service in 1923; Born at Branch and Spent Entire Life in County Elton C. Gibson, 75, one of the trio of letter carriers in Uncle Sam's service who took out the first city routes in Manitowoc, in 1893, when city free delivery was established here and who retired on a pension in 1923, died last night at his home, 618 North Sixth street. He has been in failing health for the past three months, but was able to be up and about until a couple of days before his demise. Mr. Gibson, a resident of Manitowoc county since his birth and of this city since a lad of ten, was a mail carrier for over thirty years. He with Fred Rockhoff and Richard Rudolph were appointed the first city carriers here March 18, 1893, when the city carrier routes were established. He covered the entire north side of the city, the other two having their rounds on the south and west sides. Mr. Rockhoff is now retired from the government service, because of failing health while Mr. Rudolph, the third member of the pioneer letter carriers of Manitowoc, is still in the service. Funeral Services Friday Funeral services for Mr. Gibson will probably be held Friday afternoon from the St. Pauls. M.E. church, of which he has been a member for some fifty years and of which congregation he was trustee at the time of his death. Definite arrangements are awaiting the arrival here of his only brother, Eldridge K. Gibson, of Stillwell, Kansas, who is motoring here with his wife and son for the funeral. The deceased was born at Branch 75 years ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Gibson, pioneer county residents. The family removed to this city to reside when the deceased was a young man of ten years, his father engaging in the flour and feed business here. He completed his education in the schools of the city, took a business college course and was engaged in business with his father for a few years. He took the civil service examination for letter carrier in the early nineties and was appointed, and entered on his duties March 18, 1893. Resided with Cousin Mr. Gibson never married. For the past 22 years he has made his home with his cousin, Mrs. Alice Harrison, at the old Gibson homestead on North Sixth street, which was the family home for over three score years. Mr. Gibson was devoted to his church and never held public office except for serving for a number of years on the Second ward election board. As the postal service grew in Manitowoc Mr. Gibson's route was gradually reduced until his territory covered a section in the Second ward. He retired Jan. 25, 1923, having reached the age limit. Since then he has lived a retired life. One brother Eldridge K. Gibson of Stillwell, Kansas, and his cousin, Mrs. Harrison, are Mr. Gibson's sole survivors. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. During that time he also wrote the correspondence that our readers always enjoyed. He leaves 4 children. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon.

HERMAN GLOE cemetery #89A From Der Nord Westen, 07 May 1896: On Thurs. afternoon, Hermann Gloe of Two Rivers brought his life to an end by ingesting a quantity of carbolic acid. (The article goes into detail about the sequence of events beginning with his participation in the music at a marriage near Two Rivers the night before; and a dispute with his wife the next morning as to whether she had awakened him in time for work; and how his son had gone to the factory to clear his absence, then returned to find his father still in bed having drunk the poison; Dr. Currens being summoned too late.) The deceased worked in the lathe department as a foreman in the chair factory for 22 yrs. and was well thought of. He was a twice married man and there is much conjecture about his motives for ingesting poison. The deceased was born 28 Nov. 1857 in the vicinity of Eutin, Schleswig-Holstein, and so was only 38 yrs. of age. His funeral took place Sun. and Mr. Pahlcoetter delivered the funeral oration.

RANDOLPH F. GLOE cemetery #89A From the Two Rivers Reporter, Monday, March 8, 1948 Randy Gloe Taken Saturday; Was 51 Brilliant Instrumentalist III Four Years; Rites Tuesday In failing health for the past four years, Randy Gloe, 51, one of Wisconsin's most widely known instrumentalists and a member of a famous musical family of Two Rivers, died at Wisconsin General Hospital in Madison at 8:30 Saturday night. He had been a patient there for the past three weeks. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of the Klein & Stangel, Inc. funeral home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. M.J. Roehrdanz officiating. Interment will be in the family Plot in Pioneers' Rest cemetery. The body may be viewed at the funeral home after seven o'clock this evening. Born in 1896 Randloph (sic) Gloe, familiarly known as Randy, was born in Two Rivers on November 29, 1896, a son of the late August and Mathilda Kiefer Gloe. He graduated from the public grade schools here and had attended high school. When he was but a youngster in his early teens he displayed remarkable talents as an instrumentalist inheriting such talents from his late father, who was one of the city's outstanding violinists. At the time Randy was developing for dance orchestral work, the Gloe brothers orchestra was then in existence. For his early training he went to Manitowoc to play with the Marine band and became a member of a Manitowoc dance orchestra. Shortly before World War I Randy returned to Two Rivers to become a member of the Gloe-Naidl orchestra, which included his twin brothers, Arthur and Archie, the late August H. Gloe, the late Joseph and Frank Naidl and Dr. A.R. Naidl now of Manitowoc. With this group he played trumpet and later included the saxophone. At various times he also played with both the Hamilton and Marine bands. Joined Schubert Band When jazz music became popular before World War I, Randy joined Schubert's Jazz Kings of Chicago and made an extended trip to the Pacific coast. A year later he rejoined the Gloe-Naidl orchestra as cornetist, saxophonist and vocal soloist. In the early twenties he spent one winter at Sarasota, Florida with the Ringling Brothers circus band, under the direction of Merrill Evans, who is still its leader. Rejoining Gloe-Naidls, Randy remained with the well known dance band until it disbanded in the late twenties. Since, the late musician had his own orchestra, Randy Gloe's Aristocrats, which played out of Green Bay for several years. Returning to Two Rivers some 10 years ago he formed another orchestra which had been active throughout this vicinity until four years ago, when he was stricken with illness. At the time he was also an employe of the Hamilton Manufacturing company. Recovering somewhat from the affliction in the past two years, Randy became a member of Romy Gosz' widely known orchestra, playing with the group until he was stricken again in recent weeks. Brilliant in Harmony Randy Gloe's remarkable talents for harmony and improvising were the envy of countless musicians throughout Wisconsin. Often it has been the remark among musicians: "There's only one Randy Gloe." Randy Gloe leaves his twin brothers, Arthur and Archie Gloe of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Clarence R. Becker of Manitowoc.

FRANCES KATHERINE GNADT cemetery #21 (Don't have newspaper name, 1924) Fatal Accident in Home of John Gnadt at St. Nazianz Friday Noon. The explosion of a gasoline tank at the home of John Gnadt in St. Nazianz at noon on Friday caused the death of two children, very serious injuries to their mother and severe burns to their father. The two little daughters, Leona 5, and Frances 3, were so badly burned that the oldest died two hours after the tragedy and the other six hours later. Mr. Gnadt brought from the basement of his home the gas tank of a gasoline stove which he wanted to take to the old mill, where a tractor school was being held. He was quite a distance from the stove when he shook the can to see if it was empty (which it was, with only a few drops in it). When shaking it Mr. Gnadt noticed a spark on the valve and he immediately tried to throw the can into the next room where nobody was, but it exploded before he got it out of his hand. A sheet of flame enveloped the room, and the two little girls who were near their father, where horribly burned and suffered terrible agony until death came. The mother, who was nearby, received the full force of the explosion and the flames seared the flesh off her face, hands and lower limbs. According to Dr. W.A. Rauch, who was called after the accident, her condition is still serious. The husband with his head a mass of burns and the hand that held the can charred badly led his screaming family from the house and rolled them in a snow bank until he had extinguished the flames. The report of the explosion was heard by neighbors who rushed to the Gnadt home and summonded help. Gnadt is 35 years of age, and his wife 33. They had seven children. The five living range in age from a year and a half to 12 years. The mother is still in ignorance of the fact that her two children are dead. She believes they are suffering from burns and confined in a bed in another room in the home. The explosion of the gasoline can wrecked the stove and the interior of the kitchen. Had the other children been in the kitchen at the time of the blast they would probably have met with the same fate as Leona and Frances, the neighbors assert. Mr. Gnadt is employed in the Miller hardware store at St. Nazianz and his home is in the village. The double funeral of the two little girls, victims of the explosion, was held on Monday from St. Gregory's church and was largely attended. The bodies were laid to rest in one grave. Eight little girls were pallbearers and the Guardian Angel Banner accompanied the funeral from the house. Rev. Deibele officiated, while the big choir of St. Gregory's sang the High Mass. ******** From St. Nazianz researcher/see contributors page Frances Katherine (child -April 28, 1919-Feb. 22, 1924 daughter of John Gnadt and Olive Goetz -born Clarks Mills, Town of Cato -died in gas explosion, along with her sister Leona died from "burns of skin and fascia")
