MRS. EDNA LECHLER cemetery #20 Mrs. Edna Lechler, 77, widow of the late Hubert, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at her home on R. 1, Kiel, Monday. The daughter of Herman and Louisa Kreimann Gau was born on April 20, 1893 in the Town of Eaton. She attended area schools and on Dec. 3, 1918 was married to Mr. Lechler at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in the Town of Schleswig. The couple lived in New Holstein for a year before they moved to the Eaton farm. Mr. Lechler died in December 1958. Surviving is a brother, Hugo Gau, R. 1, Kiel. She was also preceded in death by a sister and step-sister. Graveside committal services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Eaton Cemetery. At Mrs. Lechler’s request, there will be no funeral rites or visitation.

JOHN F. LECHLER cemetery #21 John F. Lechler, 81, of 108 Park Ave., Kiel, a retired Town of Eaton farmer, died Monday at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, where he had been a patient for three weeks. He was born June 13, 1897, in the Town of Eaton, a son of Ferdinand and Emma Strassman Lechler. He attended the district school. On May 25, 1926, he married the former Bridget Kautzer at St. Nazianz. The couple resided in St. Nazianz for seven years and moved to the Lechler home farm in the Town of Eaton which they operated for 40 years. Mr. Lechler also did blacksmith work. They retired a year ago and moved to Kiel. (Survivors omitted for privacy) Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, the Rev. Cyril Dickrell, pastor of St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, officiating. MIKE H. LECHLER cemetery #20 Mike H, Lechler, 66, of Route 1, Kiel, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton, where he had been a patient for 10 days. Born in the Town of Eaton on December 15, 1907, he was a son of the late Ferdinand and Emma Strassmann Lecher. He attended Elder Grove School. On June 27, 1931 he married the former Florence Rabe at Zion Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. The couple located on the Lechler home farm in the Town of Eaton. For 11 years, prior to his retirement two years ago, Mr. Lechler was employed at the A.A. Laun Furniture Company, Kiel. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel. Survivors include his widow; two daughters, seven grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Clarence Anhalt, Kiel, and two brothers, John, rural Kiel, and Helmuth, Kiel. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel, with the Reverend C.L. Reiter, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial was in Eaton Cemetery, Town of Eaton. A memorial fund has been established in Mr. Lechler’S name for Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was a long-time resident of that town having lived there since 1844. The deceased, who reached the age of 75, leaves 4 sons and 3 daughters. LOUIS/LEWIS LE CLAIR cemetery #89B From the Two Rivers Chronicle, March 11, 1902 CAPT. LOUIS LE CLAIR DIES SUDDENLY Last Friday Capt. Louis Le Clair died quite suddenly and unexpectedly at his home on the Eastside. He had been about town as usual up to a few hours before his death and the news of his sudden death was a great surprise to all who knew him. His wife died about three weeks ago and it is said that her death completely un-nerved and discouraged him. He leaves six children, three of whom are unable to care for themselves. They will, however, be well cared for by relatives. Louis Le Clair was about 38 years old and was born in the town of Mishicot in 1866. In 1881 he was married to a daughter of Collis Gauthier who born him six children, one of whom, a daughter, is married. He was a skillful and capable steamboat captain. Last year he had command of the steamer Welcome and he had been engaged to again take comand of the Two Rivers Manufacturing Co's. towing tug, Temple Emery, a command he had held several previous seasons. He had been captain of the steam tug "Temple Emery" of the Two Rivers Manufacturing Co. MARY LE CLAIR cemetery 89B From the Two Rivers Chronicle Le Clair: At her home in this city February 10, 1902. Mary, wife of Louis Le Clair, aged 38 years. Deceased was born in Two Rivers January 10, 1864. She was the daughter of Collis Gauthier, a well-known old resident of this place. About 19 years ago she was married to Louis Le Clair, captain of the steamer Welcome, and bore him 7 children, all of whom are living, the youngest being but 5 years of age. Her illness was of long standing but she was a patient sufferer, bearing up with christian fortitude while looking after the needs of her family of small children. JEROME V. LEDVINA cemetery #44 (From the Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter, 30 Nov. 1973) Jerome V. Ledvina, 84, of 111 N. 18th St., Manitowoc, retired Manitowoc County judge, died Thursday afternoon at Maple Crest Home, Whitelaw. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Schneider-Mittnacht Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Leo Schmitt will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Ledvina was born Sept. 25, 1889, at Kellnersville, son of the late Lawrence and Catherine Reif Ledvina. He attended Kellnersville schools, Manitowoc Teachers College and was graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1915. He married Helen Denzin of Milwaukee May 29, 1917, at Chicago. Mr. Ledvina was a member of Wisconsin County Judges Assn., Wisconsin Juvenile Judges Assn., Wisconsin and Manitowoc County bar associations, member and former officer of Manitowoc Eagles Club Aerie, 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Manitowoc Council, and served as district deputy for the KCs while living in Park Falls. He was also a member of the Manitowoc County Historical Society, Holy Innocents Parish and its Holy Name Society, February Club and charter member of the Manitowoc Optimist Club. He received special recognition from the federal government for his volunteer work as special agent during World War II. Mr. Ledvina was influential in organizing the Manitowoc County Retreat League. Survivors include his wife, two sons, a daughter, three sisters, nine grandchildren, one great grandchild, nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8:30 o'clock this Friday evening where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 o'clock. Memorials may be made to the Manitowoc County Historical Society, Manitowoc County Heart Assn., or charities of the donor's choice.

JOSEPH P. LEDVINA Cemetery #26 (The following from the Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter) LEDVINA, COUNTY NATIVE, IS DEAD Manitowoc - Joseph P. Ledvina, 69, former clerk of court of Manitowoc County, died Wednesday at Alexian Brothers Home, Oshkosh, where he had resided since 1941. Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville, and at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in the village. The Rev. Frank Svatek will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. A squad of the Drews-Bleser American Legion Post, Manitowoc, will provide military rites at graveside. Mr. Ledvina was born Sept. 16, 1887, at Kellnersville, son of the late Lawrence and Catharine Reif Ledvina. He attended Manitowoc Business College and then served several years as deputy register of deeds under Charles Streich. In 1914 he was elected clerk of court and re-elected in 1916. He resigned in 1917 to enlist with his brother, the late Atty. Lawrence Ledvina, in the United States Navy where he served until the end of World War I. After his war service he was employed in the real estate department of the East Wisconsin Trustee Co. for several years, later engaging in business for himself as an abstractor and real estate broker. In 1928, ill health forced him to retire. Mr. Ledvina lived with his mother at Kellnersville until her death in 1941, and since that time made his home at the Alexian Brothers Home. He was a member of the Manitowoc Council Knights of Columbus, the Drews-Bleser Legion Post and the Manitowoc Elks Club. Surviving him are four sisters, and three brothers. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday where the Rosary will be recited by Father Svatek, members of St. Joseph Church and the Manitowoc Knights of Columbus at 8 p.m. Friday.

LAWRENCE S. LEDVINA Cemetery #26 (the following from Manitowoc Herald News, Mon 30 Jan 1928) L.S. LEDVINA, 74, PIONEER SHOEMAKER, IS DEAD Father of Atty. L.W. and Joseph Ledvina of this city and a resident of Manitowoc county for over sixty years, during which he resided in the town of Franklin, died Sunday morning at his home in Kellnersville after an illness of several months duration. He was 74 years of age. Shoemaker for 60 Years Mr. Ledvina engaged in the trade of shoe making and despite his advancing years, continued at this trade up to a few weeks ago thus rounding out sixty years at his trade, truly a most remark- able record. Mr. Ledvina was beloved by all who knew him and his demise was learned with sorrow and regret by his hosts of friends in Kellnersville and the surrounding vicinity. The deceased was born in Czechoslovakia on September 17, 1853 and at the age of eight years in 1861 he emigrated with his parents to this country, coming to Manitowoc county, where he resided ever since. At the age of 12 years he was apprenticed in the trade of shoe maker, and after serving his apprenticeship he engaged in the trade for himself and up to a short time ago he was actively engaged in it. He thus rounded out over sixty years at his trade. Wife, Nine Children Survive In 1878 he married Catherine Reif, daughter of Peter Reif, one of the earliest settlers of Kossuth. There were fourteen children born and nine survive as follows: Atty. Lawrence W. Ledvina, Joseph P. Ledvina, former clerk of court, Mrs. Joseph F. Swoboda, all of this city, John of Bayport, Minn., Edward, Maribel, Jerome V. Ledvina, district attorney of Price county, Mrs. Lawrence Morrisey of Maple Grove, Mrs. Alvin J. Drengler of Suring, Wis., and Mrs. Henry Drasner of Francis Creek. The two brothers Matt Ledvina of Franklin and Joseph Ledvina of Glenn Flora, Wis., one sister, Mrs. Alfred Stoker of Glenn Flora, twenty-two grand children and one great grandchild also survive. Prominent in Church Circles The deceased was a life long member of the St. Joseph's Catholic church at Kellnersville, and of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin of that congregation, being originally a charter member of Branch No. 2 of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin located at Manitowoc. He was also a member of the Bohemian Roman Catholic American Union and of the Holy Name Society of his church. Solemn funeral services will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic church at Kellnersville on Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. J. G. Rous, with interment at the Catholic cemetery at Kellnersville.

VIOLA M. LEDVINA Cemetery #26 The following obit is for a son of Viola. Gary Edward Ledvina, 42, of 2408 Independence Lane, Madison, died unexpectedly January 17, 1987. Funeral services were held at Schroeders Funeral Home and burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park. Mr. Ledvina was born October 5, 1944, at Manitowoc, and formerly lived in Green Bay, and St. Norbert's College, DePere. He also attended U.W.-Oshkosh and U.W.-Madison. Mr. Ledvina was a Systems Analyst for Professional Management Systems for 15 years and was currently self-employed. He married Judith Zeutius on October 8, 1966, at St. Philips Catholic Church. Survivors include 2 sons, a daughter, his mother, Viola Ledvina, and a brother. He was preceded in death by his father in 1965.

Funeral services will be at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 11 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, Francis Creek. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Leggio was born April 1, 1886, in Messina, Sicily, son of the late Theodore and Antonia Calabresse Leggio. He married Carmela Tramantana April 23, 1910, at Messina. The couple came to America and Rockwood in 1911 and he was employed 35 years by Alwood Lime Co., retiring in 1949. During World War II he was employed by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Romy (Antoinette) Gosz, of Rt. 1, Whltelaw, Mrs. Wenzel (Marie) Chvala, of Rt. 1, Maribel, and Mrs. Randolph (Anna) Bleser, of Goodwin Road, Manitowoc, a son, Theodore, of Milwaukee; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. MARGARET LEHMKUHL cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 24 Nov 1898 Death here early in the morning on St. 19 Nov. of Mrs. Margarethe Lehmkuhl of old age debility. she was the widow of Johann Dietrich Lehmkuhl who died about 5 yrs. ago. She was born 07 May 1817 in Hanover near the city of Bremen and came to America with her husband in 1848. The pair settled in Town Newton, Manitowoc County, when it was a wilderness and worked their way through all the difficulties of pioneer life. About 13 years ago, after they had turned the farm over to their sons, the old couple became residents of Manitowoc. There were 8 children born of the marriage, of whom 3 are deceased. The surviving children are: Mrs. Anna Fahnestock of New York, Mrs. Lena Daue of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Ida Carstens locally, as well as sons Gerhard J. and Heinrich A. Lehmkuhl. Her body was laid to rest Mon. afternoon at the city cemetery under the direction of Pastor Romoser of the German Methodist Church here. (see contributors page-Der Nord Westen)

ERNEST C. LEHRKE cemetery #82 Ernest C. Lehrke, 65, of R. 1, New Holstein, a retired farmer, died Wednesday afternoon at Winnebago State Hospital at Oshkosh. He was born Dec. 17, 1903, at Shawano, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Lehrke. On June 5, 1928, he was married to Mathilda Wagner at Chilton. They operated a farm near Osman for a number of years. The past five years they lived in the Town of New Holstein. Earlier they lived at Chilton for seven years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel. (Survivors omitted for privacy) Two brothers and six grandchildren preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel, with the Rev. C. L. Riter, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Kiel Cemetery.

Mrs. Lemberger was born in Cato in 1873 and her maiden name was Anna Pankratz. She was married in 1890 to Mr. Lemberger who survives with eight children, 35 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. The daughters are Mrs. Frank Gresel, Medford; Mrs. Anton Braun, Whitelaw; Mrs. Frank Hill and Mrs. Joseph Reitmeyer, both of Cato; and Mrs Edward Malley, Manitowoc; three sons, Anton, Jr, Whitelaw; George, Kellnersville and Erwin, Whitelaw; one brother, Ignatz Pankratz, Antigo and three sisters, Mrs. Theresa Rank, Cato route 1; Mrs. Kate Smith, Green Bay and Mrs. Mary Otto, Minneapolis. The body will be removed from the Pfeffer funeral home Wednesday afternoon to the home of a son Erwin, who lives on the homstead on Whitelaw route 1. Funeral services will be held Friday morning, 9:30 a.m. from the home and at 10 o'clock from the St Michael's Catholic church in Whitelaw, the Rev John Husslein officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. John Husslein will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. He was born in Cato in 1870 and in 1891 married Miss Anna Pankratz. They located on a farm in Cato. Ten years ago they retired and moved to Anton Braun of Whitelaw, Mrs. Frank Hill and Mrs. Joseph Reitmeyer of Cato and Mrs. Edwin Malley of Manitowoc; three sons, Anton Jr of Whitelaw, Erwin of Cato and George of Kellnersville; brother, Joseph of Whitelaw; three sisters, Sister Elizabeth of Seymour, Wis, Sister Christiana of Alverno and Mrs. Joseph Buchner of Manitowoc; 41 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. THERESA LEMBERGER cemetery #7 Obituary Manitowoc Herald Times - September 7, 1927 edition Mrs Lemberger Passes; Leaves 62 Descendents - Well known resident of the city passes at advanced age last night. Mrs. Theresa Lemberger, 84, passed away last evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Buchner, after a lingering illness of some months. Death was brought about by infirmities incident to old age. Funeral services for Mrs. Lemberger will be held Friday morning at 8:45 from the Buchner home and at St. Michael's Church in Whitelaw, a solemn requiem high mass being celebrated. Burial will take place at Whitelaw where Mrs. Lemberger lived most of her life. Born in Germany March 1, 1843, Mrs. Lemberger who was Theresa Meyer before her marriage to Wolfgang Lemberger 60 years ago, came to this country at the age of 20 years, coming to Manitowoc County where she was wedded four years after her arrival. Mr and Mrs. Lemberger lived at Whitelaw until five years ago when they removed to this city to make their home with Joseph Buchner at 1209 South Eleventh street. Two years ago, Mr Lemberger passed away. Mrs. Lemberger leaves 61 descendants to mourn her passing. They are 37 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, five daughters and three sons. The daughters are Sisters Christina and Elizabeth of Silver Lake convent, and Sister Bartholomew of Nebraska and Mrs. Anton Paul of Sturgeon Bay and Mrs. Joseph Buchner of this city. The sons are, Wolfgang of St Peter's Minnesota, Anton and Joseph of Whitelaw. Three brothers also remain, being Martin Meyer of Whitelaw, Wolfgang Meyer of Clarks Mills and John Meyer of Germany.

LEMBERGER Striken as He is Retiring Death came swiftly and unexpectedly to Wolfgang Lemberger at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Joseph Buchner, 1209 South Eleventh st, as he was preparing to retire for the night. The old gentleman had been about as usual yesterday, had supper with the family and spent the evening at home. At 7:45 he prepared to retire and was disrobing when he collapsed and was dead before those in the home could realize what had happened. The funeral will be held Thursday morning with services at St. Michael's church at Whitelaw at 10 o'clock and burial will be at Whitelaw cemetery. Born in Bavaria, September 16, 1848, Mr Lemberger would have been seventy -seven at his next birthday. He came to his country at the age of seven with his parents, the family settling in the country and at the age of seventeen he was married and settled on a farm at Whitelaw. This farm he turned over to the son, twenty three years ago, and moved to this city, where for sixteen years he had a home on Manila St. Five years he returned to the old farm where he made his home with his son for two years and three years ago with Mrs Lemberger he came to the city to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Buchner. Besides the widow Mr. Lemberger is survived by three sons and five daughters, Wolfgang, Jr, who is a travelling salesman in Minnesota, Joseph of Cato, Sister Christina at the Holy Family convent, Sisters Elizabeth and Bartelme at West Point, Nebraska; Mrs Joseph Buchner of this city and Mrs. Anton Paul of Sturgeon Bay. Mrs. Grall a sister, thirty four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive him. NOTE: (Anton Lemberger is the son not mentioned)

CHRISTIAN LEMKE cemetery #78 From Der Nord Westen, 06 June 1907 Christian Lemke, a resident of Town Rockland, died 29 May at age 78 yrs. 3 mos. and 7 days. The deceased was born 22 February 1829 in Sarasnow, West Prussia, and came to America 04 March 1857. After staying for a while in New York he came to Wisconsin in 1858 and settled on a farm in Town Rockland. In 1862, during the Civil War, he enlisted in Company ‘D’, 2nd Wisconsin Regiment and served 3 years, 8 months. He was in the following battles: Haymarket, Virginia, 28 August 1862; South Mountain, Virginia, 14 September 1862; Antietam, Maryland, 17 September 1862; Fredericksburg, Virginia, 11 December 1862; Chancellorsville, Virginia, 05 May 1863; and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 01 July 1863. In that last battle, while he was reloading his weapon, his left hand was shattered by an enemy bullet. After binding up his wounds he looked for shelter and was provided with milk by an elderly couple. After his wound healed he went back into service with the 22nd Wisconsin Regiment with which he served until his discharge 18 November 1865. He then returned to a farm in Town Rockland. In 1867 he married the widow Louise Kuehn who died in 1871 after presenting him with 2 sons. He entered into a second marriage on 11 October 1873, with widow Friedericke Damm, with whom he had 2 sons and a daughter. One son from his first marriage and a daughter from his second marriage preceded him in death. Christ Lemke was always hale and hearty until falling ill with dropsy at Christmas time. He is survived by his sorrowing widow and 3 sons, as well as 10 step-children and many grandchildren. The funeral was held last Saturday under the direction of Pastor W. Schlei at the Lutheran Cemetery of Rockland.

Mrs. Lenneville was born at Oxford, Chenango county, N.Y., and was a niece of Gen. Hovey, the founder of that town. Many of her relatives, occupying respectable and influential positions, still reside there. She became a resident of this County long before its organization, and was the authoress of some very interesting reminiscences published several years ago in the Green Bay Advocate. For some years past she was in feeble health, and the disease which finally consumed her, made sure and fatal progress. She was an intelligent and agreeable lady, esteemed for he kind and estimable qualities, and the loss to her family and friends is severe beyond description.

ARVILLA C. LENZ cemetery #87 Arvilla C. Lenz, 99, formerly of Louis Corners, died Sunday morning February 20, 2005 at Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident for the past 3 1/2 years. She is the former Arvilla Drake, born January 13, 1906 in the Town of Schleswig, the daughter of the late Herman and Anna (Voigt) Drake. Arvilla attended Louis Corners Grade School was a graduate of Kiel High School class of 1925 and Also attended County Normal School in Manitowoc. For several years Arvilla taught at the Roselawn School in the Town of Liberty. On June 16, 1928 she married Carl A. Lenz at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Louis Corners and he preceded her in death on May 10, 1993. The couple farmed in the Town of Schleswig all of their lives, moving to Kiel in 1990. They were also the caretakers of Zion Evangelical Church for 33 years. Arvilla was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was active in the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Louis Corners Card Club, the Kiel Senior Citizens and the Louis Corners Homemakers. She enjoyed Tatting, Crocheting, and piaying cards. Survivors include one son, one daughter, two grandsons, four great-grand- children. Arvilla is further survived by three sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by one daughter, one son, three brothers, Helmuth, Edwin, and Richard; and one sister, Norma Alonso. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ted Olsen officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. In his declining years the deceased has been making his home with his son, August Lenz Jr. Burial will take place Monday afternoon at one o'clock from the home and at two o'clock from the Liberty Lutheran church. Mr. Lenz was born in Germany and grew to manhood there. He was married there and with his wife removed to America in 1868 and settled on a farm in the town of Liberty. Mrs. Lenz preceded her husband in death 32 years ago. She was 69-yrs. of age and had come to Manitowoc with her husband, Jacob Lenz, from Germany and lived here ever since. In addition to her husband she leaves 3 sisters - Mrs. Lieder in Washington, Mrs. Werbke and Mrs. Krumheuer here and a brother Frank Gehbe in Clarks Mills. There were no children. The funeral was held Tues. afternoon at the city cemetery.

JACOB LENZ cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 24 Apr. 1902: Death yesterday morning following a long illness of 81-yr. old Jacob Lenz, one of the oldest settlers in our city. He came from Germany in the '40's, settling in Manitowoc in 1847 where he has lived ever since. He was involved in several types of businesses here, most recently a furniture store which he gave up to enjoy a wellearned rest. Following the death of his wife a few years ago he himself has been ill. He is not survived by any children. The last several years he has enjoyed the hospitality of his brother-in-law Carl Werbke here. The funeral was held Sat. afternoon.

ROBERT E. LENZ cemetery #85 Robert E. Lenz, age 71, of rural Kiel, died Monday evening, February 16, 1998, at Calumet Medical Center, Chilton. Funeral Services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 1998, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. Rev. Ted Olsen will officiate, with burial at Uecker Cemetery, town of Schleswig. He was born May 23, 1926, in the town of Meeme, Manitowoc County, son of Herbert Lenz and the late Nora Paul Lenz. He attended Kiel and Valders area schools, and was a Navy Veteran of World War II. Bob married Marion Bonde June 11, 1949, in School Hill. He was self-employed in sales and founded Lenz Trucking. He enjoyed selling Christmas trees to many friends and relatives for 43 years. Bob was a charter member of the St. Nazianz American Legion Post and the Pigeon Lake Sportsman's Club. He was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying sturgeon fishing. Survivors include his wife, four sons and two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren, his father and step-mother. He is further survived by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of services. ELIZABETH LEONARD cemetery #84 Mrs. Lizzie Leonard Dies Monday Evening Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, for Mrs. Lizzie Leonard, 75, Town of Rhine, who died Monday evening at home following a lingering illness. The services will be held at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's United Church of Christ with the Rev. Vernon E. Jaberg officiating. Burial will be in the Schleswig Cemetery at Rockville. Mrs. Leonard was born August 12, 1888, in the Town of Rhine, daughter of the late George and Eva Holzmann Schmahl. She was married June 19, 1909, to Walter Leonard of the town of Rhine. The couple located on the Leonard home farm. Her husband preceded her in death in May, 1929. For the last 18 years she had made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Jung, of Route 1, Elkhart Lake. She was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Merlin Jung, of Route 1, Elkhart Lake, two sisters, Mrs. Edward Brieger, of Kiel and Mrs. Leonard L. Platz of Route 1, Elkhart Lake, and a granddaughter. FRANK LEONARD cemetery #84 Called By Death. Death claimed Frank Leonard at his home in Rockville last Saturday, after a brief illness. The deceased had suffered a stroke of apoplexy February 15th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louis Kattreh in Cedarburg, where he had gone with his wife for a visit. Despite the best of care and medical attention his condition became gradually worse, and he was brought to his home in Rockville three weeks ago, where he closed life's pilgrimage on April 17th. His daughter, Mrs. Kattreh of Cedarburg, took care of him until the end. Mr. Leonard was born in Niagara Falls, N. Y., August 26, 1852, and when two years old came with his parents to the town of Rhine, where he grew to manhood. In 1876 he was united in marriage there to Christine Klein and the couple later settled in Rockville, where they have since resided. Besides his wife he leaves four sons and three daughters, as follows: George of Rockville, Joseph and Edward of Milwaukee, and Harry of Cedarburg; Mrs. H. Kramer of Elkhart Lake, Mrs. W. Notbohm of Wauwatosa and Mrs. Louis Krattreh of Cedarburg; also several grandchildren; one step-brother, John, and one step-sister Francis, of Rhine. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the home, interment being in the Rockville cemetery. Rev. Zeh of Rhine officiated. Worthman conducted the services and burial was made in the Rockville cemetery. Mr. Leonard died at Memorial hospital Thursday night. A well-known carpenter in the area, he was born December 14, 1882, the son of the late Frank and Justine Leonard and took up the carpentering trade at the age of 17. November 7, 1908, he married Ida Strade of the town of Schleswig, and the couple located in Rockville. His wife died in December of 1934. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Arno Ruh of Kiel, Mrs. Melvin Sommers of Town Mosel, and Mrs. Victor Pech of Manitowoc; three sons, Harvey and Everett of Kiel and Roy at home; 12 grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Louis Kattreh, Town Rhine; and two brothers, Edwin and Harry of Milwaukee. HARVEY JOSEPH LEONARD Cemetery #32 Harvey Joseph Leonard, age 90, of Kiel, died Thursday, September 14, 2000, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in rural Fond du Lac County. Funeral Services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, September 18, 2000, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel. Rev. David Laabs will officiate with burial in the Knollwood Chapel Mausoleum, Manitowoc. He was born October 5, 1909, in Louis Corners, son of the late George Leonard and Ida Wilhelmine Pauline Strade. Harvey was a 3rd generation American of German descent, his great grandparents, George Leonard and Elisabeth Urban having immigrated to the United States as pioneers in 1852, settling in the Rhine Township of Sheboygan County. He attended the Rockville Grade School and the Kiel High School. On February 3, 1934, he married Irene Lydia Huhn at St. John & St. Peter Lutheran Church in Cleveland. The couple has resided in the Kiel area since their marriage and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this year. Harvey was employed by Stoelting Inc. in Kiel as a shop worker making cheese vats from 1939 to 1944, and then again from 1946 until his retirement in 1974. Harvey also farmed 60 acres on the outskirts of Kiel with his wife and family, and was well known in the community for the potatoes he grew and sold from his home for over 25 years. After retirement, he was actively engaged in his hobbies of fishing, collecting and restoring antique tractors, gasoline engines and cash registers. He was a member of the Wisconsin Steam & Antique Engine Club. Harvey was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel. He was affectionately known by his many grandchildren and great grand- children as "Papa" and will be greatly missed by his entire family. Survivors include his wife, one son, two daughters, three sisters, 11 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren; and four step great grand- children. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett Leonard and Roy Leonard; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild. IDA LEONARD cemetery #84 Wash Machine Causes Death This Monday Hair Catches in Rollers, Mrs. Geo. Leonard Found by Son Mrs. George Leonard, aged 48, of near here, met death accidentally at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at her home when her hair became caught in the electric ringer of a washing machine whe was usine, and caused her neck to be broken. Mrs. Leonard, who was alone at the time of the accident, was found by her six year old son Roy when he returned from the Rockville school. He ran beck to the school and told his 12 year old sister, Priscilla. Mr. Leonard who was doing carpentering in Kiel was notified and coming to his home, found the electric ringer still running. Mrs. Leonard was dead at the time her body was discovered. Manitowoc county coroner, Gerald Rau, pronounced the tragedy as accidental. Mrs. Leonard, before her marriage Miss Ida Strade, was born on a farm in Louis Corners, Jan. 1, 1886, the daughter of Mrs. August Strade and August Strade, deceased. She was married to George Leonard of Rockville November 7, 1908, the couple locating directly in Rockville where they have since resided. Survivors are her husband and six children, Harvey of Rockville, Everett of near Kiel. Mrs. Arno (Dorothy) Ruh, of near Kiel, Helen of Sheboygan, and Priscilla and Roy at home; her aged mother, Mrs. August Strade of Millhome, and two brothers, Otto of Millhome and Herman of Louis Corners. Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at the family residence in Rockville at 1:30 o'clock and at two o'clock with services at the St. Peter Reformed church in Kiel. The Rev. E.L. JOSEPH J. LEONARD cemetery #84 Joseph J. Leonard Laid To Rest Wednesday Funeral rites for Joseph J. Leonard, 64, of Milwaukee, who passed away suddenly Saturday morning, were held on Wednesday afternoon at Kiel. He was born on Feb. 23, 1884 in the town of Rhine, the son of the late Frank and Justina Klein-Leonard. His baptism and confirmation took place at the Reformed church in Town Rhine. In his early youth he worked at Meyer Bros. store in Kiel for several years and a few years with the Horneck Bros. at Elkhart Lake. For 37 years he had lived in Milwaukee at the home of his sister, the Willard Notbohm residence at 2242 Wauwatosa ave. During that time he was employed at Schuster's and for 34 years for A. Landauer and Sons. Survivors are three brothers and a sister, namely: George and Mrs. Louis (Edna) Kattreh of Rockville, Harry and Edwin of Milwaukee. He lay in state at the Ritter Funeral home in Milwaukee Monday and then at the C. J. Meiselwitz Funeral home, where services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. E. L. Worthman of the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church officiated at the rites. Mrs. Roland Griebenow, the pianist, accompanied the Mesdames Harry Dawurske and Athniel Raquet, as they sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Nearer My God to Thee." Interment was made in the Rockville cemetery. Pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased: Harvey Kramer, Leslie Kattreh, Donald Leonard, Harvey, Everett and Roy Leonard. Among those attending services from away were his co-workers of Landauer and Sons, Al Herman, Emil and Henry Fink, Frank Schweda, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Horneck and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mattes, all of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Kramer of West Bend; Rev. and Mrs. John Siegle and son of Eyota, Minn.; a great number of relatives and friends from Sheboygan, Elkhart Lake, Rockville, Haven and surrounding communities. - March 1948

KATHRINA LEONARD cemetery #84 Mrs. K. Leonard Called by Death Mrs. Katherine Leonard died at her home in the Town of Rhine near here Wednesday, September 28, at 7:15 a. m. at the age of 72. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 1, at 1:30 from the home in Town Rhine and at 2:00 from the Evangelical Church in Town Rhine; Rev. Paul Thomas conducting the services. Interment will be in the Rockville cemetery. Mrs. Leonard, nee Katherine Balz, was born in Whitehaven, Pennsylvania, on March 24, 1856, and was the daughter of John and Katherine Balz. At the age of two, the family moved to Pittsburgh, where they resided for several years. At the age of eight Mrs. Leonard came to Wisconsin with her parents, and settled with them on a farm in the Town of Schleswig. On May 16, 1882, she was married to John Leonard, and the couple settled down on a farm in the Town of Rhine. Her husband preceded her in death on November 14, 1933, as did one son, Walter, who died May 15, 1929. She is survived by a son, John, at home on the family homestead, and two daughters, Mrs. Walter Bub, of the Town Rhine, and Louise, at home. There are in addition, three grandchildren and one brother, William Balz, of Garnet, to mourn her death. - 1938

WALTER F. LEONARD cemetery #84 Walter F. Leonard, a life-long resident of Town Rhine, passed away at his home there on Wednesday, May 15, after a lingering illness of several years duration. Mr. Leonard was born on his father’s farm in Town Rhine March 11, 1886 and passed his entire boyhood at that place. On June 19, 1909, he was married to Miss Lizzie Schmahl and the couple continued living in Rhine. Three chil (some missing)of which died in infancy, Besides his aged parents and his wife, the deceased is survived by one daughter, Virginia, two sisters, Mrs. Walter Bub of Rhine Center, and Miss Louisa and John at home. (Libba) Lettenberger, 78, 520 Fremont Street, Kiel, died Thursday evening at Calumet Memorial Hospital in Chilton, where he had been a patient for three weeks. Mr. Lettenberger was born August 29, 1905, in Valders, son of John and Hermina Weinkoetz Lettenberg. He attended school in Kiel. Mr. Lettenberger and the former Alvira Klauck were married July 6, 1929, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. The couple lived in Kiel, where for 35 years Mr. Lettenberger was chief of the City of Kiel Fire Department. He retired in 1970. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel, its Holy Name Society, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Surviving are his wife; four sons; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grand- children. A funeral Mass was held Monday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel. The Reverend John De Groot, pastor of Chilton Catholic Interparish, celebrated the Mass. On June 24, 1884, she was united in marriage with Adolph Lettenberger, who preceded her in death two years ago. Since that time she has been living with Mrs. Kelm. JOHN LETTENBERGER cemetery #43 Former Kiel Resident Passes Away Feb. 1 John Lettenberger, father of Herman Lettenberger of this city, was called to rest last Wednesday night following a brief illness at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Auermiller at Manitowoc, where he had been residing. The deceased was born in St. Nazianz in 1869, the son of Adolph and Elizabeth Sprang-Lettenberger. In 1893 he was married to Miss Hermina Weinkoetz who preceded him in death in 1936. For several years they conducted a hotel in the building which now houses the Co-op Food store, Hayner Barber shop and Denny's tavern. They also operated a hotel in Valders before going to Manitowoc where they managed the Glenn Inn for a number of years. Following that he was employed by the Aluminum Goods Mfg. Co. in that city. Survivors are his daughter, Mrs. Auermiller; four sons, Alphonse, Herbert and Norbert, all of Manitowoc, and Herman of this city; a brother, Dr. Joseph Lettenberger of Milwaukee; 14 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic church, with the Rev. L. M. Schorn officiating. Burial took place in the Calvary cemetery.

ALVINA LEUBNER cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 15 Jan. 1891: Death on Sun. morning, after a long and terrible illness, of Mrs. Alvine Leubner, a long time resident of our city. She was born 27 July 1820 in Chemnitz, married Mr. Ernst Leubner in her 30th year and came with him and her eldest son to America in her 50th year. They settled here in Manitowoc where Mr. Leubner established a drugstore. In 1874 she suffered the loss of her son Otto who was studying the druggist business in his father’s store. Also in 1881 she lost her only daughter, just to have her husband follow soon after. She was ill several weeks preceding her death. Her funeral took place on Tues. in the city cemetery. Of her two surviving sons, the eldest, Paul, lives in Minneapolis and the other, Alfred, is in business here.

Leubner, of this city, died at the residence of his father-in-law, Hon. Chas. Esslinger, on Monday, the 16th of February last, of Consumption, at the age of 27 years, 10 months and 6 days. The deceased was a native of Saxony came to this city with his parents some twenty three years ago, since which time he has resided here constantly. He leaves a lovingly devoted wife, who was married to him less than a year; his aged parent, to whom he was a faithful son and his two brothers and a sister who all loved him for his goodness and constant devotion to their mutual contentment and interest, besides a host of friends, to whom he has endeared himself by his gentleness and reliability. The funeral will take place this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock.

FRED LEVENHAGEN cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 27 Feb. 1902: Sudden death Mon. of Fritz Levenhagen, a well-known and active German resident of our city. Mr. Levenhagen was sitting in his armchair Mon. noon conversing with his wife and sank dead in the middle of a sentence. Mr. Levenhagen was born in Mecklenburg in 1821 and came to Manitowoc in 1855 where he has lived ever since. He formerly operated a fishery here but gave it up as old age approached. In addition to his widow he leaves 10 children. The funeral will be held this afternoon. ******* [bur. 02-24-1902/cause: heart failure]

HEINRICH C. LEVENHAGEN cemetery #63 From Der Nord Westen, 06 Aug. 1896: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 03 Aug.) Death last Thurs., 31 July, of H. C. Levenhagen. He was born 21 Sept. 1824 in Varchentin, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and married in Dec. 1846. In 1853 he came with his wife and 2 sons to America, first settling in Trenton, N.J., then 3 yrs. in Canada, coming to Mishicott in 1856 where he lived 3 yrs., then moving to Kewaunee. In former years he worked as a miller, but since 1876 has been in the saloon business. He is survived by his wife, 7 sons, 3 daughters, 35 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. His funeral took place last Sun. afternoon in the local cemetery attended by a large crowd. Fritz Levenhagen of Wausau, and Mrs. Mathilde Olfs (nee Levenhagen) of Medford, stayed here a few days after attending their father’s funeral.

Levenhagen died in her home here on New Year's morning after an illness of several weeks. She had suffered a stroke about 12 years ago from which she never fully recovered. Her death might be considered a release from her long suffering. She was a widely respected lady and a true wife and mother. She leaves her husband and 5 children - 2 daughters and 3 sons, of whom the youngest is 10 years old. Her funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at the local cemetery. ------ Mrs. H. Levenhagen died in Mishicott on New Year's Day following a long and difficult illness. Mrs. Levenhagen, who was 60, had suffered a stroke several years ago, and this eventually led to her death. She is survived by her husband, 2 sons and 2 daughters. The funeral was held yesterday.

SOPHIA LEVERENZ cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 26 May 1904: Death Sat. morning of Mrs. Carl Leverenz, after a long illness, of old age debility. The deceased was born Sophie Kansier on 23 Feb. 1825 in Siekow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin and married Carl Leverenz 25 Mar. 1843. The couple came to America in 1851 and traveled to Milwaukee via Canada, stayed there about 6 weeks and then came to Manitowoc where they have lived ever since. Here they overcame all the difficulties and troubles of the pioneer life and enjoyed the highest admiration of their fellow citizens. In March last year the couple celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. The inroads of age increased over the last year until she closed her tired eyes in death last Sat. Her husband, who celebrated his 81st birthday on 01 May, has suffered a terrible blow in the loss of his life partner. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Leverenz is survived by 7 children, namely, Friedrike Schenk and Mrs. Auguste Falge in Manitowoc, Wilhelm Leverenz in San Francisco; Mrs. Henriette Staus, Carl, Frank, and Arthur Leverenz in Manitowoc.The funeral was held in the afternoon day before yesterday. ******* [bur. 05-21-1904/age 79 yrs./cause: old age] (Note: The tombstone in the photo has the wrong date on it.)

NIC. LEY cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 02 Apr. 1896: On Mon. morning some children at play near the docks of the 8th St. bridge, saw a cord hanging from a nail into the water. The curious boys started to pull on the cord, and much to their horror, found a man’s hand and then the body of a man at the end of it. Obviously the police were called immediately and the body taken to land. It was determined to be the body Nicolaus Ley, an old and well-known resident of our city. The coroner’s inquiry was conducted with a verdict of suicide. What prompted him to take his own life is unknown. What is known is that about 4 weeks ago he had traveled to Chicago to undergo an operation that may have led ultimately to his decision. He went to Chicago again last week and returned here on Tues. about 10 a.m. That is the last time he was seen. Nicolaus Ley was born 25 Nov. 1831 in Bez. Trier, Prussia. He lived over 40 yrs. in our city where he ran a wagon and blacksmith shop. His funeral took place Tuesday.

He was born 17 Dec. 1809 in Germany and lived the 40 years before his death here, where he served the city for many years as cemetery attendant. His wife preceded him in death 14 years ago. He leaves 4 children of whom 3 live in Antigo and one lives locally. The burial took place Sun. at the city cemetery.
