CORP. F.M. HOFFMAN SACRAFICES HIS LIFE FOR LIBERTY'S SAKE Weeping bitterly and broken-heartedly, a little grey-haired woman removed the bright red star from the little window in the cottage at 1024 St. Clair Ave. The reason was quickly apprehended - her boy had died. He sacraficed his life for Old Glory and for the sake of Liberty and democracy. And for this reason the overseas star had vanished and a glaring one of gold replaces it. Then Came a rap at the door. It opened and a younger woman appeared. That was at the residence of Mrs. E. Jackett. The old grey-haired woman, Mrs. E. Jackett was sitting at the table sobbing more bitterly than heretofore. A word of cheer was given her and the loving little mother checked her sobs for a moment, long enough to tell of the misfortune. "We received a wire last night - - saying Corporal Frank Martin Hoffman, Co. C, 127th. Infantry, was killed in action September 1." That was her brief story. Corporal Hoffman was 33 years old and was born in Sheboygan July 18, 1885. He attended St. Peter Claver school and was confirmed in St. Peter Claver church, located on the south side, June 11, 1899. Prior to his volunteer enlistment June 26, 1916, he was employed at the Crocker Chair Co. A. & B. Corp. Hoffman recently wrote his step-father, Mr. Jackett, wishing her were young enough to join him and go over the top with him. A picture of his folks, it was said, went over the top with him and was on his person at the time of his death on the battlefield somewhere in France. "He was a fine boy and it's hard to lose him" said his stepfather sobbingly, just outside the kitchen door. "But it had to be and we must make the best of it " he continued. "I fought in the Civil War and was nearly gone myself, it was a great cause and a well worthy cause too." Corp. Frank Hoffman is survived by his stepfather and his mother, Mr. and Mrs. Jackett, two sisters and one brother, all of whom are residing in this city. + 3 ii.
