Nicholas Hanert, who for many years served as pastor of St. Cecilia's church in this city, aged 68, died at his home on Sunday after an illness that had extended over several years. Rev. Hanert's first illness was caused by a stroke, which incapacitated him to a certain extent and caused him to retire from the service of his pastorate here, since which time he has been about more or less, there being several years when he was able to be about town and visit with his friends, but for several years past he has been confined to his home, gradually losing his faculties and sinking in health until the end came on Sunday, September 18th. Nicholas Hanert was born February 22, 1870 at St. Anna, Wisconsin. He came to Wisconsin Dells 31 years ago and served as the pastor of St. Cecilia's until he retired on account of ill health in 1932, since which time he has made his home in this city, where he had many friends, but was never able again to take part in the business of his life work. DENNIS HARKINS Farmer Fatally Injured. Dennis Harkins, Town of Russell Dies after Team Runs Away. Body Crushed by Big Engine. Suffers Internally When Heavy Machine Crashes Down on His Chest – Unable to Explain Why Horses Became Frightened. Dennis Harkins, aged 47, a farmer residing in the Town of Russell, five miles west of Elkhart Lake, suffered fatal injuries at 12:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon when a team of horses he was driving became frightened and ran away, plunging him to the ground beneath a heavy gasoline engine. He died at 6 o’clock yesterday evening. The accident occurred one mile west of Elkhart Lake. Mr. Harkins had been to the village and purchased a stationary gasoline engine, which he loaded on the trucks of his wagon. He was found a short time later by John Rehm, of Elkhart Lake, who took the injured man into the village by automobile. The cause of the runaway and the manner in which Mr. Harkins was injured remains a mystery. The injured man was semi-conscious when found, and he did not regain full consciousness. His left shoulder was crushed and his chest broken down. Several ribs punctured the left lung near the heart, causing internal injuries. It is thought the team became frightened at some object in the road and plunged away and out of the control of the driver. The wagon was overturned and the engine fell on Mr. Harkins. Mr. Rehm was driving into Elkhart Lake and found him lying on the side of the road. He was taken to the village and given surgical aid, but to no avail. Mr. Harkins was formerly president of the Town of Russell, in which his home is situated. He is survived by his wife and seven children, all living at home. Sheboygan Press, Tues.
