GEORGE LACHAPPELLE George A. LaChapelle, 63, of R. 1 New Holstein, died suddenly at his home at St. Ann Thursday afternoon. He was born June 20, 1897, in Walsh, Wis., (Marinette Co.), the son of the late Theophil and Ellen LeClaire LaChapelle. he attended school in Walsh, and married the former Florence Trepanier of Marinette on Nov 23, 1925, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Marinette. The couple lived in Oconto for 14 years, and later moved to Escanaba, where he was a serviceman for Delta Hardware. He later became a sign painter for Meyer Signs in the same city. In 1958, the couple moved to Green Bay, where he was a custodian at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church for two and a half years. They moved to St. Anna Dec. 1, 1960, when he became custodian of St. Ann's Catholic church. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, two sons, 14 grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. George Richards of Marinette. he was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister. Mr. LaChapelle was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and a veteran of World War I. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, following brief services at 9:30 a.m. at Meiselwitz Funeral Home in Kiel. The Rev. RALPH LANGENFELD St. Anna Man, Langenfeld, Is Killed In Crash. Ralph Langenfeld, 52, a St. Anna (Calumet Co.) mink rancher, was killed instantly about 9:50 a.m. today when his car was involved in a crash with a milk truck at the intersection of two Fond du Lac Co. highways. Traffic police of that county reported that Langenfeld's auto and a milk truck driven by Harvey Freund, 26, of R. 1 Malone (Fond du Lac Co.) came together at the intersection of Co. Trunks Q and QQ about three miles west of Johnsburg. The truck is owned by Leroy Summers. Police said that Langenfeld was westbound on Q and the truck northbound on QQ. The crash occurred at an open intersection. Langenfeld was dead when taken from the wreckage. His body was taken to St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. The death 14th traffic fatality of the year in Fond du Lac Co. raised Wisconsin's highway toll to 301, compared to 376 at this time in 1956. Sheboygan Press, Sat. MARIA LIFFRING St. Anna — August 24 - Mrs. Maria Liffering, one of the respected citizens of this vicinity died on the 14th inst., at the age of 85 years. MINAS H. MAGARLIAN Minas (Schuster) Magarlian, 79, of R. 1, New Holstein, died Saturday at his home. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He was born in Armenia July 15, 1885. Before his retirement he was employed at the Lauson Division of Tecumseh Products at New Holstein. He was not married. There are no immediate survivors. She had been seriously ill since Tuesday and a patient at the hospital since Wednesday. She was born Jan. 26, 1894, in St. Anne, daughter of Henry and Mary Stemper. On Oct. 27, 1913, she married S.S. Mahlberg, and for the past several years the family has lived in Glenbeulah. Survivors are her husband, three children, Jeanette, Jack and Lora, her parents, one sister, Mrs. Hugo Gebhart, St. Anne, and a brother, Edward, of New Holstein. SEVERIN "SY" MAHLBERG Si S. Mahlberg, 53, passed away suddenly at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at his home at Crystal Lake. He was born February 14, 1896, at Charlesburg, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Mahlberg. He was married to Miss Amanda Stemper on October 27, 1919, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 27, 1939. On Feb. 7, 1948, he was married to the former Olive Spangler. For many years he headed an orchestra in this vicinity, and he has been an owner and operator of taverns in this county and in other parts of the state for a long period of time. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Giles (Jeanette) Knowles of Campbellsport, and Mr. Warren (Lova) Pfrang of Plymouth; one son, Allan (Jack) Mahlberg of Milwaukee; step-daughters, Violet Joan and Patricia Spangler at home; two grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Simon Hoffman and Mrs. Emil Shirza of Milwaukee, Mrs. Connie Bloomquist of Rockford, Ill., Mrs. Walter Dodd of Oshkosh, and Mrs. Edward Stemper of New Holstein and Casper of Kiel. JOHN P. MAYER John P. Mayer, 86, a resident of the Lutheran Home, Fond du Lac, died at St. Agnes Hospital Saturday night. Born in North Dakota, July 24, 1890, he married Rose Sabel in Johnsburg, Wis. She died in 1956. Mr. Mayer farmed in the St. Anna area and was custodian at St. Anna Church for 25 years. After moving to Fond du Lac, he was custodian at the National Exchange Bank Building, retiring in 1958. ROSE MAYER Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Joseph Church in Fond du Lac for Mrs. Rose Mayer. The Rev. Leander Mayer, Milwaukee, nephew of the deceased, san the requiem mass. After the mass the funeral cortege came to St. Anna, where St. Ann's Christian Mothers Society were reciting the rosary for the deceased and escorted the body to the cemetery. Mrs. Rose Mayer, the widow of John P. Mayer, was born Aug. 19, 1888, at Johnsburg. She was married there in 1911 and came to St. Anna where she resided till 1950 when they moved to Fond du Lac. Mrs. Mayer was a member of St. Joseph's Church, the Altar Society, and the Third Order of St. Francis and Christian Mothers of St. Ann at St. Anna. Mrs. Mayer is survived by her husband and 10 children, Gilbert, New Holstein, Mrs. William Lefeber, Mrs. Lawrence Fox, Mrs. Ben Fox, Mrs. Jerome Fox, Mrs. James Huck, Fond du Lac, Sr. M. CATHERINE MERTENS Mrs. Mertens Of New Holstein Is Called To Rest New Holstein. — (Special) — Mrs. Joseph Mertens, 51, died Friday morning at 11:45 o'clock at St. Nicholas hospital, Sheboygan, after a week's illness. Nee Catherine Heus, she was born July 26, 1889, in Marytown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Heus. She attended Marytown schools and on Nov. 12, 1913, married Joseph Mertens. The couple resided on a farm near St. Anna. Survivors are the husband, four children, Cletus, Victoria, Frances and Joan, at home, four brothers, Nick of Fond du Lac, John of Sheboygan Falls, Matt of Marytown and William of New Holstein. A son and daughter died in infancy. She was a member of the Christian Mothers' society of St. Anna church. The body lies in state at the home in St. Anna. There will be vigils at the home tonight and Sunday night. Aug. 17, 1940, p. 2, c. 7 ********** Many Attend Funeral Rites For Late Mrs. Joseph Mertens St. Anna Wis. — St. Ann's, Catholic church was filled to capacity with sorrowing relatives and friends who came Monday morning to attend the funeral services for Mrs. Joseph Mertens. The Rev. Leo Binder sang the requiem mass and officiated at the grave. The Christian Mothers' society attended the services in a body, meeting the funeral cortege at the church and escorting the body to the grave. While the body lay in state at the home, the coffin was surrounded with beautiful flowers. The floral tributes and numerous spiritual bouquets attested to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Mrs. Mertens was a devoted wife and loving mother, and a neighbor beloved by all. For many years she was president of St. Ann's Christian Mothers' society. She was at all times of a cheerful disposition and ever ready and willing to aid a neighbor or friend. Her death is a loss to the community which extends sympathy to the bereaved husband and family. FRANCES MERTENS Mrs. Frances Mertens, 87, of St. Ann, died early Friday evening at St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac, following a brief illness. Born April 6, 1866, in St. Ann, a daughter of Joseph and Theresa Herzog Turba, she was married to John Mertens of the Town of New Holstein at St. Ann's Church on Jan. 17, 1888. The couple operated the Mertens homestead farm in the Town of New Holstein after their marriage. Following the death of her husband on April 3, 1897, Mrs. Mertens continued to make her home on the farm with a son, Joseph. She moved to St. Ann in 1941. Mrs. Mertens was a member of the Christian Mothers Society of St. Ann's Catholic Church. Survivors are the son, Joseph, of Kiel; one daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Alvina) Schmitz, of Town New Holstein; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Valentine Boll of Beverly Hills, Calif. Two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a, m. Monday at the Meiselwilz Funeral Home, Kiel, and at 10 a. m. at St. Ann's Church. The Rev. John M. CHRISTIAN MEYER Christian Meyer Of Town Russell Dies On Tuesday Kiel, Wis.—(Special)— Christian Meyer, 78, who resides with a son, Oscar, on a farm one mile southwest of St. Ann in Town Russell, passed away Tuesday morning at St. Nicholas hospital, Sheboygan, where he had been confined for the past nine days. He was born Dec. 17, 1863, In Town Russell and was married to Mary Ranz of Green Bay on Feb. 12, 1895, and the family resided on the farm near St. Ann since. His wife passed away May 17, 1938. Survivors are four sons, Arthur of New Holstein, Oscar of Town Russell, Irvin of Milwaukee, and Edward of Marinette. Nine grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 a. m. at the residence and at 10 a. m. at St. Ann's Catholic church in St. Ann. The Rev. FRANK MEYER Frank Meyer, 79, of R. 1, Kiel, a Marytown area farmer for 40 years, died Sunday evening at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, where he had been a patient for a week. He was born at Marytown on March 21, 1885, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Meyer. He married the former Margaret Dorn on May 25, 1909, at Marytown. A member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, New Holstein, he was active in Holy Name Society and Catholic Knights No. 223. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Orville (Erna) Reichardt, Kiel, Mrs. Herbert (Rosetta) Suttner, New Holstein, and Mrs. Leonard (Virginia) Kandler, Colgate; six sons, Raymond of Cleveland, Sylvin of Manitowoc, Clarence of Marytown, Harvey and Alfred, both of Charlesburg, and Robert of St. Anna; 29 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Mike (Eva) Diedrich, Stockbridge. A daughter preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Erbe-Hoffmann Funeral Home, New Holstein, and 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church. The Rev. KATHARINA MEYER Mrs. Katherine Meyer, wife of Peter Meyer of this village, died on Wednesday of last week, after three weeks of great suffering caused by blood poisoning. Just two days before her death her leg was amputated after which she failed rapidly until the end came. Mrs. Meyer was 61 years of age and by her death she leaves a sorrowing husband and seven grown up children, namely; Mrs. Jos Turba, Mrs. Nic Gregoire, Mrs. Jos Konz, of this place, and Maggie, Anna, John and Matthias at home. PETER MEYER Aged Resident Of Sheboygan Is Called To Rest Peter Meyer, 87, died at 5 p. m. Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joe Turba, 315 Wisconsin avenue, where he had resided for the past year. Mr. Meyer was born in Germany on November 19, 1839, and had lived in Wisconsin for many years. He lived the greater part of the time at St. Anne and for a while before coming here, had made his home in Sheboygan Falls. He was a Civil war veteran. The survivors are two sons, John Meyer, of Minnesota, and Matt Meyer, of Chilton; five daughters, Mrs. Joe Turba, this city; Miss Maggie Meyer, of Chicago; Mrs. Mary Gregoire, Mrs. Konz and Mrs. Stemper, of Russell; twenty two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one brother, Nick Meyer, of Michigan, and two sisters, Mrs. Machlett, of Curtis, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Kathleen Kleinhaus, of New Holstein. JOSEPH MICHELS Joseph Michels Passes Away At W. Depere Home Elkhart Lake. — Joseph Michels passed away at his home in West Depere Friday evening after a lingering illness of old age. The deceased, who was born on November 3, 1851, at Fredonia, leaves to mourn his death his widow, eight sons, Nic at Kiel; John of Chile; Andrew of Elkhart Lake; Math, of Dorchester, Frank of Milwaukee; Edward, of Brillion; Peter, of Fond du Lac; and William, of Campbellsport, and one daughter, Miss Marie, of Chicago. Two brothers, John B. of Sheboygan, and Peter, of Los Angeles, California, and one sister, Mrs. J. Kumry, of the latter city, also survive. One brother, Andrew, of Morris, Minnesota, died a few weeks ago. The remains were sent to Kiel Saturday afternoon where they will lie in state at the home of the deceased’s son, Nic, until Tuesday morning when the services will be held at 10 a.m. from St. Ann’s church at St. Anna. ELIZABET MIRSBERGER Elkhart Lake. — Mrs. Elizabeth Mirsberger, 75, a life-long resident of this area, died Saturday morning in the St. Nicholas hospital, Sheboygan, after having been there six weeks. The former Miss Elizabeth Raeder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barthel Raeder, was born Sept. 20, 1866, in the town of New Holstein and received her education at St. Ann's school. On May 13, 1890, at St. Ann’s church, St. Anna, she was married to Jacob Mirsberger of Elkhart Lake, after which they made their home on the Mirsberger farm near the village. They operated the farm until the death of Mr. Mirsberger, Dec. 18, 1918, at which time Mrs. Mirsberger sold it to John Menne and bought a home in Elkhart Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Mirsberger celebrated their silver wedding anniversary May 13, 1915, when the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph T. Kroha, the first resident pastor of St. George parish, celebrated a high mass in their home. Mr. and Mrs. Mirsberger were charter members of St. George Catholic church which they helped build and up to the time of her illness, Mrs. Mirsberger had charge of the care and decorating of the altars. She was a charter member and one time president of the Christian Mothers society of St. George Parish, and the society will attend in a body at the funeral. The Mirsbergers had no children, and her survivors include one brother, Anton Raeder of St. Anna, one sister, Mrs. Paul (Anna) Leonard of Hettinger, N. Dak., and by many nieces and nephews. Four sisters preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the Mirsberger home and at 10 at the St. George Catholic church with a solemn requiem high mass, with the Rev. Felix Sippel of Elkhorn, former pastor of St. George parish, as celebrant. He will be assisted by the Rev. James W. Huepper of Wauwatosa, another former pastor of the church and who celebrated the requiem high mass for Mr. Mirsberger, the Rev. Clemens Kern of St. Anna, and the Rev. A. J. Reinl, Elkhart Lake. JACOB MIRSBERGER Jacob Mirsberger, one of the best known farmers of Elkhart Lake, died Tuesday, December 17 at his home, after a long illness. In his death, Elkhart Lake loses one of its best known citizens, a man of sterling character and ever kind and ready to do things for others. He conducted a farm which was up to the minute and as long as health permitted enjoyed laboring on it. He was well-known throughout the county and vicinity and his demise will be deeply mourned by a large circle of friends. Mr. Mirsberger was born in the town of Rhine, May 9, 1863 and had reached the age of 55 years. May 13, 1890, he was married to Miss Roeder, who survives him. WILLIAM MUELLER William Mueller, Former Resident of Kiel, Dies Kiel—William Mueller, 44, former resident here, died Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Felix Zinkgraf home at Omro where he resided for the past seven years. Mr. Mueller had been ill with pneumonia for a week. He was born in Kiel, June 10, 1889, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Mueller. Survivors are: four brothers, Peter and Anthony of Kiel, John of Hayton, and Bernard of Milwaukee; three sisters, Mrs. Adam Williams of New Holstein, Mrs. August Darnoth and Mrs. Peter Kirsch of Milwaukee. ANNA NADLER Mrs. Nick Nadler Dies As Result Of A Heart Attack New Holstein. — Mrs. Nick Nadler passed away here early this morning following a heart stroke which she suffered last Saturday. The deceased was born May 16, 1868, at Elkhart Lake, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L, Mersberger. On November 14, 1890, she was united in marriage to Nick Nadler of St Ann. The couple lived on a farm near Chilton for six years and then moved to the Nadler homestead near St. Ann where they resided for twenty years. Fourteen years ago they moved to New Holstein where they since resided on Illinois avenue. The survivors are her husband and five daughters, Mrs. Henry Rach and Mrs. Henry Jeanty of St. Ann; Miss Ella Nadler at home, Mrs. Hugo Rach of Kiel; and Mrs. William Fritz of Washington D.C.; and one brother, Bartelt Mersberger of Plymouth. Two sons, and a daughter preceded her in death. Mrs. Nadler was a member of the Christian Mothers Sodaility of Holy Rosary congregation at New Holstein. NICHOLAS NADLER Nicholas Nadler, 89, died this morning at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Rach, 629 Tenth St., Kiel. He returned Sunday from St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, after being a patient there for nine days. He was born on Jan. 25, 1869, at St. Anna, the son of the late Andrew and Theresa Breckheimer Rach. He was married to Anna Mersberger, Elkhart Lake, on Nov. 14, 1895. The couple farmed near Chilton and at St. Anna and in 1919 they retired and moved to New Holstein. His wife died in October, 1934. Since then he made his home with his daughters. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. William (Hilda) Buchholz Sr., Mrs. Henry (Amanda) Janty, and Mrs. Hugo (Minnie) Rach, all of Kiel, and Mrs. Elizabeth Daniels, Denver; 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Two sons and a daughter died in infancy. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ss. Thursday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel, following brief services at Meiselwitz Funeral Home. The Rev. F. X. Kheil was the celebrant of the Requiem Mass The Rev. L. A. Stingel officiated at the grave at St. Ann Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerome Janty, Herbert Pethan, LaVerne Melvin, Ronald and Sylvester Rach. Members of Holy Name Society with the Rev. NICHOLAUS NICOLAY Nicholas Nicholai, a pioneer settler of the town of New Holstein died on July 7. A few days previous to his death he had the misfortune to fall and break a leg. The shock no doubt caused his death. He was born on May 7, 1817 in Belgium. Came to America in 1854 and landed in New York. He remained there for six years then moved to New Holstein. He leaves two sons and one daughter. He made his home for a number of years, with his son, John. The funeral took place on Tuesday from the Catholic Church at St. Anna Chilton Times, July 13, 1901
HUBERT OCHS Hubert Ochs, 78, a life-long resident of Fond du Lac county, died Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Francis Mertens at St. Anna following a lengthy illness. The son of Mr. and Mrs. George Ochs, the deceased was born Dec. 21, 1869, at Mount Calvary, and spent his boyhood there. For the past 60 years he has resided in and around St. Anna. He was a member of the Holy Name society of St. Anna's Catholic church. Mr. Ochs was unmarried. Only immediate survivors are a brother, Michael, Adams, Wis., and a sister, Mrs. August Thede, Cumberland, Wis. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a. m. Friday at the Mertens' residence and at 10 a. m. at St. Anna church. The Rev. C. P. Kern, pastor, will officiate, and burial will be made in the parish cemetery. ELIZABETH OTT Russell- Death of Mrs. Elizabeth Ott On Friday morning, Feb. 15, Mrs. Elizabeth Ott nee Koehler dropped dead in front of the church steps just as she was leaving after having attended the mass service. Death was due to heart failure. The deceased was born in Bohemia, Austria, Dec. 15, 1856 and came to America with her parents at sixteen years of age. She was married to John Ott and the couple lived in Woodville till they moved to St. Anna where they resided the past eighteen years. Mrs. Ott was a member of the Christian Mothers society and a very devout member of the St. Ann’s church. The funeral took place Monday morning at 10:30. Rev. J. H. Schmitt officiating. Mrs. Ott is survived by one son Robert of Chilton and two brothers Nenzel Koehler of Hilbert and Jos Koehler of Woodville. Mr. Ott preceded her in death three years ago. Thurs. ELIZABETH PERL Mrs. Eugene Perl, 83, of 419 North St., Kiel, died Monday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, following a several weeks illness. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, and at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. The Rev. F. X. Kheil will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. She was born Elizabeth Janty, March 22, 1872, at St. Ann, Calumet County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Janty, and in 1897 was married to Eugene Perl. They located on a farm at St. Ann and in 1897 moved to Kiel. She was a member of the Christian Mothers of both St. Ann and Kiel. Surviving are her husband, daughter, Mrs. Henry Turba of St. Ann, two sons, Nick of St. Ann and Joseph of Kiel; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be received at 8 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at the church at 8 p.m. Wednesday. NICHOLAS PERL Nick Perl, 75, of 615 St. Paul St., Kiel, died early today at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, where he was a patient since Sunday. Born on Oct. 19, 1899 at St. Anna, he was a son of the late Eugene and Elizabeth Janty Perl. He attended St. Anne's Catholic School. On Sept. 16, 1924 he married the former Erna Hiederer of St. Anna. The couple farmed at St. Anna until 1955 and moved to Kiel in 1957. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1974. Mr. Perl was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. Survivors include his widow; three sons, 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph, Kiel, and a sister, Mrs. Seraphine Turba, St. Anna. Two brothers and two grandchildren preceded him in death. (Survivors edited for privacy) Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Ss. GILBERT PUETZ St. Anna Gilbert Puetz is a patient at St. Nicholas Hospital following a heart attack. Sheboygan Press, Thurs. Feb. 8, 1962, p. 16, c. 1 ******** Gilbert Puetz, 48, of St. Anna died Wednesday morning at his, home following a heart attack. Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, and at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann Catholic Church, St. Anna, with the Rev. Benedict H. Marx officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He was born Dec. 1, 1913, at Charlesburg, son of the late Joseph and Mary Mullenbach Puetz. He married Loena Krebsbach Feb. 28, 1933, at Marytown. The family moved to St. Anna 17 years ago after residing at Charlesburg. He was employed at Techumseh Corp. at New Holstein and was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Ann Church and a member of the Cheboygan Tribe of Redmen Lodge of St. Anna. He was also an insurance salesman. Among survivors are his wife, three daughters, three brothers, Edwin of Kiel, Hugo of Charlesburg and Elroy of Milwaukee; three sisters, Mrs. Otto Reinl of Charlesburg, Mrs. Ernie Daun of New Holstein and Sister M. Gudelia of Aurora, Ill., and five grandchildren. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where the parish Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. and the Holy Name Rosary at 8:30.
