From Sheboygan county marriage records: Joseph Ammann and Marie Stenson (v.7 p.499) Sept. 21, 1897 in civil ceremony, Plymouth Joseph Ammann Son of Theodore and Gertrude Ammann Born Germany –cigar maker at Elkhart, Sheboygan County Marie Stenson Daughter of Warren and Margret Stenson Born in Manitowoc County ******** Joseph was born on October 15, 1857 in Rhine Province, Germany. He came to the United States with his parents in 1864. On August 18, 1944 he wrote "When we came to Wisconsin there were many Indians in the woods. I went to school in two log school houses. There were many deer and bears around in the woods when we came to Wisconsin. I was always afraid to go to school through the woods on account of the Indians and bears". He had received a good education in music from his father and played in the Kappelle des Kiel Musik Verein (Band of the Kiel Music Club), and the Arion Band. In 1879 he married Margarethe Stenson of Plymouth, Wisconsin. He had a jewelry and watch repair shop in Kiel and later in Marion, Wisconsin. After retiring he moved to Los Angeles, California where he died on August 29, 1946. He was cremated. ******* Receive News of Death Mrs. H.P. Ammann received the sad news Monday afternoon of the death of her brother-in-law, Joseph Ammann, who passed away at Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 29, 1946. Mr. Ammann who was born in Crefeld, Germany on Oct. 15, 1861, and came to America, directly to Kiel in 1864. For many years, Mr. Ammann conducted a jewelry shop in the building which now houses the Lewis Cleaners. From Kiel he went to Marion, and then to California, where his wife died several years ago. Survivors include a sister, Miss Katherine Ammann, 86, residing in Los Angeles, Calif., and five nieces, Mrs. Vera Toepel and Mrs. Carmen Goltry of this city, Mrs. Walter Nissen of Chicago, Mrs. Edna Plattner of Cranfort, N.J., and Mrs. Gertrude Cussack of Boy River, Minn., besides Mrs. H.J. Ammann, his sister- in-law. Services for Mr. Ammann were conducted on Sept. 3, at 4:30 p.m. Last rites at the Peace Chapel, with Rev. Wayne Walker officiating. His body was cremated at the Grand View crematory. ******** 1897 Wedding - Margaretha Stenson to Joseph Ammann Mr. Jos. Ammann and Miss Margaretha Stenson, both of Elkhart Lake, came to Plymouth on Tuesday night, and were married by Judge M.M. Gilman. Mr. A. Wolf and Mr. M. Prindeville were witnesses. The couple returned to Elkhart Lake on the 7:00 PM train. "The Plymouth Correspondent" congratulates our fellow citizen Joe Ammann, in this happy event and wishes to the young couple well. Mr. Ammann will in a short time, move to Kiel, where he will open a jewelry store. ******* Death Summons Mrs. Joseph Ammann Mrs. Joseph Ammann died at her home in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sunday, February 4, according to word received here Monday of this week by the H.J. Ammann family. The Ammann family lived here some years ago, when the husband of the deceased owned the present A.J. Brill jewelry store. When the couple left Kiel they made their home in various parts of the state for a number of years. Two years ago they lived in Kiel for a few weeks, after which they left for their present home. Mrs. Ammann, who is a sister-in-law of H.J. Ammann, had been ill for several weeks. She was born Marie Stenson, near Manitowoc. The deceased had suffered from convulsions for the past 25 years. ******* On January 1, Miss Rosa Ammann the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theo Ammann, died at the home of her parents. She was 43 years old, and had suffered from convulsions for nearly 25 years. The deceased was born on June 12, 1865 in the Town of New Holstein, and has been living with her parents who have cared for her since of onset of her illness. Besides her parents she leaves behind four sisters. The burial was on Monday afternoon, with numerous mourners in attendance. Mr. Wm. Broeckert read the funeral service and said a few words, while the Kiel Arion Band played the funeral service. ********* Rosa Ammann was born on July 12, 1865 in New Holstein, Wisconsin; she did housework for others, and died in Kiel January 1, 1911. She is buried in the Kiel Cemetery. Never married. Joseph her brother wrote on August 18, 1944 "My sister Rose was servant at a farmers. She slept upstairs. House was on fire in winter. Jumped from second floor in night clothes.
